Chapter 51
00:31, 4 July 2013The last ever chapter of this fanfic. It's a long one, that's why it took ages. Hope you enjoy
-------------------------------------------------------
Liam POV
"Niall you can't keep doing that!" I say as, yet again, he has continued playing FIFA while I've left the room. Every single time I go and get a drink, he un-pauses the game and scores about 3 goals. That's probably because it's the only way he'd ever beat me.
"You snooze you lose, old man," Niall quips back as I quickly grab the controller to start playing again.
Niall's phone starts to ring and he says, "It's unknown, should I answer it?"
"No, it's probably just a fan, leave it," I say. Fans always get our numbers and we end up having to change them every week. Someone always leaks them out.
"Ooo they're ringing me now," I say as I see my phone vibrating on the table.
"Hello?" I say into the phone, putting it on loud speaker so Niall can hear.
"Liam, it's Trisha Malik," the woman at the other end of the line says. Her voice is breathy and her speech interrupted as she gasps for air.
"Is everything ok?" I ask, noticing the upset yet fearful tone in her voice.
"No. It's Zayn and Perrie. They're in hospital and I need you to go there right now," she says and both me and Niall jump up at the sound of the word 'hospital'. "We're on our way but we'll be a few hours."
"Ok, I'll be there. Don't worry, just get there safely," I say, not asking any questions and hanging up the phone.
Niall is running frantically around the house searching for a car key and his jacket.
"I'll drive," I say, heading for the door, not bothering with a jacket. Niall scurries after me and we head to get into the car and drive frantically to the hospital, calling all the boys and girls on our way.
-
"LIAM!" Jade shouts as she spots us entering the hospital. Harry, Louis and the Little Mix girls are already there as we make our way over to them. Jade runs to great me and soaks my shirt with her tears as she hugs me tightly. Harry has wrapped Niall in a hug to comfort him.
"Have they said anything yet?" I ask and Jade immediately points over to a doctor in a white lab coat who is walking over to us.
"Are you the family of Zayn and Perrie?" the doctor asks as he reaches us. He has a look of pity in his eyes as he sees the look of confusion in all of our faces, not knowing what has happened to our best friends.
"We're their best friends," Louis replies, "What's going on?"
"Well there was a car accident," the doctor says and everyone gasps with Jade wetting my shirt even more with her tears. "Perrie's in a coma and has just come out of surgery, if you'd just like to see her."
"And Zayn?" I ask.
"Zayn is in surgery. But there have been some complications," the doctor says, taking a long pause.
"Well fucking tell us," Louis says, getting irritated with how long the doctor was taking to tell us the fate of our friend. None of us tell Louis to stop, because he shouldn't.
"He's lost a lot of blood. The surgery was risky but necessary. There has been some serious damage to his internal organs," the doctor says, finally spitting it out.
"What does that even mean?" I ask. None of us are experts, we don't know how serious that is.
"It means he may not make it."
-
Jade POV
I clutch onto Perrie's hand as her lifeless body lies on the hospital bed. She's attached to about 4 monitors and 6 drips. Her face is all cut up from the shards of glass that hit her in the collision. Her broken leg has been elevated and put into a cast.
I look around at the boys who all look forlorn and lost. Zayn still isn't out of surgery, while his empty bed lies in the same room as Perrie. The doctor hasn't come to tell us anymore about Zayn, and the boys are still speechless from the bombshell the doctor has dropped, we all are.
Obviously the boys are a lot closer to Zayn than us girls are, but we're worried for Perrie as well. What if she wakes up and Zayn hasn't made it. I don't think she'd survive. All the girls and all the boys know that it would be the end of all our careers if anything were to happen to Zayn. The boys couldn't and wouldn't want to go on without him and I don't think Perrie would ever be ok.
'But we have to think positive,' I say to myself. I turn to look at Perrie. Her face is so innocent as she sleeps deeply. We don't know when she'll wake up from this coma or if she'll wake up.
"It's gonna be ok, Perrie. I promise you, it'll be ok," I whisper to her. The whole room is silent so they can all hear what I'm saying, except from Harry, who is pacing up and down the corridor. "You have to stay strong, like you always do."
"And Zayn will be ok too," Liam says, coming to stand next to me and Perrie. "You've been so strong, Perrie. You've been through a lot and you've always got through it and you will this time. You'll get Zayn through it as well because you've taught him to be strong," Liam says and I turn to smile at him and rest my head on his arm.
-
2 hours later
"MY BABY!" Perrie's mum cries as she darts into the hospital room. It's a long drive from Weymouth and she's come by herself so I can't imagine all the panic and fear that's been running through her mind for the last couple of hours. "What happened to her?"
"Her and Zayn were in a car accident. Zayn's the worst off, he's still in surgery. But Perrie's in a coma and they aren't sure when she's going to wake up," Jesy explains to Deborah.
"But how? Who did this to them?"
"We don't know. The police will be here to ask questions once Perrie wakes up, but that's all we know," Leigh-Anne says.
Perrie's mum repeatedly kisses Perrie's forehead as she struggles to comprehend the damage done to her little girl and what exactly happened to her.
"We'll give you a bit of time alone," Liam says as he indicates to the boys to leave the room. Leigh, Jesy and I all follow them out to give Deborah some time with Perrie.
"D'you wanna go get some food Nialler?" Liam asks as we walk down the corridor of the hospital.
"I'm not hungry," Niall says and all the boys turn to look at him, confused.
"Well lets go to the cafe anyway. We need to eat something," Liam says and he's right. We've been in this hospital for hours and still haven't eaten. We've completely missed dinned and now it's about 11 o'clock.
-
One hour later
Liam POV
Zayn's family are here now and the room is too crowded for everyone so we're sitting in the corridor. Zayn has finally got out of surgery but is unconscious. The doctors are hardly telling us any details and it is getting annoying now.
Trisha was pretty much inconsolable when she saw Zayn, lying on a hospital bed. The doctors were right when they said he came off the worst. The collision was on his side of the car and he's broken both legs, punctured a lung, and broken his rib cage. Luckily his back and neck weren't injured so he isn't paralysed. But the nurse said that the situation with his rib cage and lung makes him very fragile.
"I think I'm gonna head off now," Louis says, breaking the silence in the corridor.
"What? Why?" I ask, Zayn still hasn't woken up so why would he want to leave now?
"It's getting too crowded and we're in the way. Call me if he wakes up or anything happens and I'll be right here," Louis says, getting up slowly.
"That's not a bad idea," Jesy says, "I think we'll head off too."
"But I don't want to go yet," Jade says. Jesy drove Leigh and Jade so they couldn't leave without Jade leaving.
"I'll drive you back," I tell Jade and she smiles at me. Jesy, Leigh, Louis and Harry all say their goodbyes as they leave me, Niall and Jade sitting in the corridor.
Niall moves closer to me to fill the gap that Harry had left and I put my arm around him and Jade and they lean on me. They are probably the most fragile two so I know I need to stay calm and strong just for them two.
"We're just gonna pop to the cafe," Zayn's mum says as she exits the hospital room with Zayn's sisters and Perrie's mum. "Where did the others go?"
"They went home. They said to call once either of them wakes up," I explain as me, Niall and Jade all jump up to make our way into Perrie and Zayn's room.
They're still lying there, the same as they were before. Jade walks over to Perrie and Niall and I walk over to Zayn. He really does look dreadful and it's hard for us to see him with cuts all over his face. Niall puts his head in his hands while staring at his injured friend.
"Oh my god! She squeezed my hand!" Jade screams and me and Niall immediately run round to Perrie's bedside.
Perrie POV
"Are you sure?" I hear Liam's voice say and I squeeze Jade's hand again.
"Yes! She did it again! Oh my god!" Jade says.
"Niall, go get a doctor!" Liam shouts and I hear footsteps running out of the room.
"Water," I gasp. Using all the energy I have in me. My throat feels raspy and my head feels sore. I try to open my eyes but I can't.
"Here," Liam says, placing a cup next to my mouth and slowly tips it so I can get some water down me.
I finally muster up enough energy to open my eyes slightly and I see Jade and Liam standing over me. But where's Zayn?
"What happened?" I ask and at that moment a tall man in a long lab jacket walks in, probably a doctor. He is followed in by my mum and Zayn's family. I try to muster up a smile but I don't have the energy. And there is still no Zayn.
"Hello baby," my mum says as she delicatly pushes my hair out of my face and behind my ears.
"Where's Zayn?" I ask, my eyes drifting shut again as I fall back into a deep sleep.
-
6 hours later
"Jade," I whisper, as I open my eyes to see her sitting in an armchair next to my bed. Her eyes slowly flutter open and she sits up properly to face me.
"Are you ok?" she asks, standing up and walking over to me.
"I'm fine," I say, but I'm not. My whole body feels heavy. My leg is in a cast and everything just feels sore.
"Well the police are outside and they want to talk to you," Jade says, "Is it ok for them to come in now?"
"Yeah, but first, where's Zayn?" I ask Jade.
"He's there," Jade says, pointing across the room. I try to turn my head to see him but it's too painful on my neck. "Hey, it's ok," Jade says as I start crying from the pain and from not knowing how Zayn is and not being able to see him. "He's not woken up yet but don't worry. I promise he'll be fine. Now I'm gonna bring the policeman in," Jade says and walks over to the door.
I try again to turn my head towards Zayn but a sharp pain stops me.
"Hello Miss Edwards," a policeman says as he walks into the room accompanied by my mum, Zayn's mum, and Jade. They all smile at the sight of me sitting slightly more upright in my bed.
"Hi," I say.
"Now I'm just going to ask a few questions but if you start feeling tired or unwell then just say and we'll come back later," the policeman says and I smile at him to continue. "What do you remember about the accident?"
"Well, me and Zayn were driving back from the restaurant. We were on our way back to our house and then there was this blinding light at Zayn's side of the car. I screamed and then everything went black," I say, vaguely and just testing my memory.
"And did you see the car who crashed into you? Any details you remember about the crash?"
"It was a big black car but the light was too bright for me to see the brand. Why? Is the driver ok?" I ask.
"We don't know. He fled the scene immediately after the collision. Did you see the drivers' face?" the policeman asks while jotting notes down into his notepad.
"No, sorry," I say, angry at myself for being so useless.
"Don't worry. It all happened very quickly," the policeman says, reassuring me. "At the time of your crash, you didn't have seat belts on. Is there a reason for that?"
"Um, we were in a hurry," I say, streching the truth.
"Does that mean you could have been speeding?" the policeman asks, looking up from his pad and pen.
"Zayn would never speed," Trisha tells the policeman and I nod hesitantly in agreement.
"You sure?" he asks, looking at me for an answer.
"Yes. He wouldn't speed," I say.
"Ok, that is all. Thank you," the policeman says and leaves the hospital room. Trisha and my mum follow him out, probably to find out what is going on.
"Perrie, why were you rushing? And why weren't you wearing a seat belt," Jade asks, confused as to my answers for the police mans questions.
"We were fighting," I say sadly, running everything that happened through my head. This is my fault.
-
"Wait so he proposed to you?" Jade asks following my story. I've told her everything. Everything I said. Everything he said.
"Yes and then I was so fucking stupid. Why would I accuse him of cheating on me?" I ask myself. I'm idiotic. I lashed out at him and that's why we're here. That's why Zayn still hasn't woken up and why he's so injured.
"You know he wouldn't do that Perrie. You know how much he loves you," Jade says, obviously surprised.
"I know. I'm just a rubbish girlfriend and I fuck up all the time," I say, tears starting to fall down my cheeks. They sting as they enter the cuts on my face. Jade hugs me loosly so she wont hurt me. "Can you help me into the chair. I want to speak to him," I say, refering to Zayn and pointing at the wheel chair.
"You sure?" Jade asks me and I lightly nod my head.
Jade walks out of the room and comes back in with Liam and Niall. They push my body round and then come either side of me and lift me slowly into the chair. I wince at the pain as I am pulled up from the bed.
"Ok, we'll love you to it," Liam says as he wheels me over to Zayn and him, Niall and Jade all leave the room.
This is the first time I've seen Zayn. He's covered in cuts and bruises. I can hardly recognise him and both his legs are plastered up. I hold onto his hand and bring it up to my face to kiss it as I cry.
"I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry. I was stupid and should've never said that stuff. I know it's not true and I shouldn't have made you feel like that. I love you more than anyone in the world and this is my fault. It's my fault because I hurt you and I can't even express how sorry I am," I say, tears still streaming down my face. The pain from my injuries has been numbed by the pain I feel for hurting Zayn.
I reach over to his face and brush his hair up with my hands in the way he likes it, trying to make him slightly more recognisable.
"I love you," I say and I rest my forehead on the side of Zayn's bed.
"I love you too," I hear and immediately jolt my head up. But Zayn is still lifeless with his lips glued shut.
Then I feel a squeeze on my hand.
Zayn POV
"Oh my god you're awake," Perrie says.
"Yeah," I whisper, slowly opening my eyes to see the most beautiful girl in the world sitting next to me. She has cuts on her faces but it doesn't stop her smile from making my heart beat quicken.
She puts her hands on the side of the bed and tries to push herself up from her chair. I see her struggling so try to get closer to her. I slowly sit up but there's a sharp pain right in my stomach and I immediately collapse backwards. She continues to push herself up, wincing in pain.
As she finally stands up, with her body weight on my bed. She pushes her lips firmly onto mine. It hurts. Everything feels sore and the pressure she's applying on my lips but I don't care. It doesn't matter because it's her. She's the one face I needed to see when I woke up.
"ZAYN!" Niall shouts as he enters the room, running over to me.
"You two! Get a room," Liam mocks as he comes round to my bedside.
"I thought we had one," Perrie says, looking around the room. "Jade can you help me back into the chair," Perrie asks and Jade walks over to assist her.
"Zaynie!" my little sister Safaa says as she runs over to me, followed by my other sisters and my mum.
"Hi guys," I say, starting to close my eyes. "I'm just gonna have a little nap," I say and drift off back into sleep.
-
2 days later
I'm finally allowed to go home today. Perrie was released yesterday but she didn't leave. She's stayed with me the whole time, being my little nurse. My family went back to Bradford yesterday because my sisters have school and Perrie's mum went home this morning.
Even though it's been fine between us two, I know that at some stage we're gonna need to talk about the fight we had before the crash. I know she's been stressed about me since the accident, so I don't really know when it'll be a good time to bring it up.
"Do you need help?" Perrie asks as I struggle to do my shirt buttons up. I asked Liam to bring me some clothes and he brought me a checked shirt and some sweat pants. Not the best fashion choice ever.
I carry on trying to do them up but it's too hard. Perrie hobbles over to me, as she is on crutches, and moves my hands away so she can fasten my buttons. A tear slips from my eye as the pain killers start wearing off and my leg begins to throb in pain.
"Hey," Perrie cooes, wiping the tears from under my eyes. "Don't cry. I promise you'll get better. One way or another, we'll get you back to yourself again. You won't be like this forever," she says, as I look up at her from my wheelchair.
"Are we gonna talk about what happened before the crash?" I blurt out, regretting it soon after. But it's playing on my mind.
"Zayn," Perrie says, with some sort of sympathy in her voice. I know it's painful for her to remember the crash and the lead up to the crash. She blames herself and I blame myself.
"Listen, you don't need to marry me. I'm sorry for putting pressure on you," I say, putting her hands in mine. "I know you're scared of commitment and scared of time apart. I know we're young and we haven't been together for long. I just want you to know, I'm in this for the long run. Forever."
"I am too," she whispers, smiling as a few tear drops fall down her cheeks.
"Whenever you're ready, I'll be here. Whether it's 1 year or 20 years, I'll still be here. I promise. And I'll never cheat on you and I'll never hurt you. I'll defend you and I'll look after you. I'll try my best to make you smile," I say as I rub circles in the palm of my hand.
"I know," she whispers, tears still falling down her cheeks as I reach up to brush them away.
"And one day we can have kids and you'll be the best mother in the world and I'll try and be a good father. I know we're not ready yet. I know I'm always away and you're always working. I want your career to come first. Just tell me when you're ready to be my fiance. I promise I wont get angry and I wont pressure you."
"Now," Perrie says, interrupting my speech. I never usually do all the talking and I feel like some sort of poet just expressing all my feelings.
"What?" I ask.
"I'm ready now," she says and I widen my eyes in confusion.
"Not to get married just yet. But to get engaged. I'm ready," she says, surprising me further as the wide smile I know and love appears on her face.
"So you want to be engaged?" I ask, still confused about her sudden change of mind.
"If you think it's a good idea, I think it's a good idea. I don't want to be with anyone else but you," she says. I pull her arm so she's leaning over me. I stretch up to kiss her firmly on the lips.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
