Airport Revelations

07:03, 24 January 2015

I didn’t say anything when Patrick got back to his apartment. He didn’t say anything either. Instead we both pretended like the lunch never happened.

It’s been working pretty well for us. He hasn’t brought up Amanda since I saw her, and I’m certainly not going to. Instead we talk about anything and everything else. We’ve learned just about everything there is to learn about each other. We are almost always talking. And when we aren’t talking, we’re making out. We haven’t gone farther than that yet though. We’re comfortable where we are, and I’m happy.

Surprisingly enough none of his teammates have brought up his ex either. And I’ve spent plenty of time with them lately. Every home game since we got together I’ve hung out with them after. I’ve gotten to know a lot of them pretty well, and I even consider a couple of the guys to be my friends now too. Maybe that’s why they haven’t brought up She Who Shall Not Be Spoken Of. Maybe they consider me a friend too.

What’s the most surprising thing is that the Happy Couple hasn’t said a word. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Tazer hasn’t said anything. It’s not his style.

Kailey however takes every insult or wrong ever done to me personally. I’m shocked she’s not banging down my door demanding that I talk to my boyfriend about this. I’m getting a little nervous actually.

“What did you do?” I ask her now. She’s been pacing in front of me for an hour. We’re waiting at the airport for a friend of ours. His plane is late, and Kailey is restless. If she doesn’t sit down soon she’s going to drive me insane.

“What do you mean?” Her confusion is written all over her face. “I didn’t do anything.”

“Well I’m sure that’s a lie,” she’s always doing something. Or, well, I am, but she usually has something going on up there too. “But I’ll be more specific. What did you do to Amanda?”

“Amanda?” She’s genuinely shocked. “Why do you think I did something to her? I know I talk violence but I’m not in any position to actually hurt anyone Jen.”

I flinch in sympathy. Yeah, that’s true enough. The Happy Couple finally went officially public and the media are having a field day with this information. Seven years older! Not even out of college! Still a teenager! The bad press hasn’t stopped and sadly Kailey has taken most of the hits. Most people are just looking for a reason to hate her right now. She’s been on very good behavior lately so no I don’t think she’s actually hurt Amanda.

But then I’m very confused as to why she hasn’t brought her up.

“Normally you’d be pushing this Amanda-had-lunch-with-Patrick thing a lot harder than you are,” I observe. “You haven’t said a word about it. It’s kind of worrisome. And for god’s sake can you PLEASE stop pacing?”

She drops unceremoniously in the chair next to mine. “I got lectured.” That’s it. No explanation, no elaboration.

“You got lectured on . . . ?”

She grinds her teeth. “Interfering in my friend’s lives,” she growls out. “I was told that I don’t need to help you handle the situation and to let you and Patrick work it out for yourselves. You’re both adults and my opinion isn’t necessary in this. I would only be starting an argument by bringing it up and that wouldn’t make me a very good friend now would it?”

The venom with which she says this has me afraid for Jonathan’s life. “Well I’m sure that conversation went over very well.”

“Oh yeah it went fabulous,” her words are dripping with so much sarcasm that I look down to see if there’s a puddle on the floor. “So fabulous that we broke up after it.”

“WHAT?!” I scream, drawing the attention of everyone nearby. Security watches us intently and I look down, embarrassed. “What the hell do you mean you broke up?” I ask at a more acceptable volume.

“It was only for an hour,” she mutters. “I actually went up to our room and started packing the stuff that I had in there. He stood there and watched me for a while before he just grabbed all of my stuff and dumped it in his closet.

“We were both upset and emotional and apologized a lot,” she looks at me carefully. “It was our first real fight. I hated it.”

“Your first real fight was over something that wasn’t even one of your issues?” I feel really guilty right now. I don’t let on though because that would piss her off. We’re best friends. Her issues are my issues and I wouldn’t expect her to think mine aren’t hers too.

“Stop feeling bad,” she scolds. “It was bound to happen sooner or later. This just happened to be something we disagreed enough on to cause it. We still disagree but you seem to be doing fine without my help and Jonny and I are both stressed enough as it is.” She eyes me carefully. “I’m not going to fight with everyone on this. You don’t want to talk about it. Jonathan doesn’t want me involved. Patrick isn’t speaking to me for some reason. I know a losing battle when I see one and as long as you’re fine with it then I’ll let it go.”

We sit silently for a few minutes. I’m the one to break it. “So what you’re saying is I don’t have to worry about you getting into a fight with her over the lunch?”

“What I’m saying is you don’t have to worry about me getting involved. Unless of course she does something to insult you. In which case I will break her fucking jaw.”

I laugh, but only because I know she’s serious. “You’re a good friend.”

“I know, I’m amazing,” she jokes. Then she’s serious once again. “You will tell me if she starts causing problems, won’t you?”

“Only if you promise to tell me if the ex comes back into the picture on your end.” I’m not stupid, I know she’s holding out on me on this. It’s the same reason I would hold out on her. She doesn’t want me doing something stupid to defend her. The difference is, I’m not the one in the spotlight, so if I get in trouble it won’t be as big of a deal. She won’t see it that way though.

“She hasn’t been around lately,” Kailey tells me. “But I’m sure that will change soon enough.”

I take this as an agreement to our deal.

“You got Kailey to stop pacing,” Patrick comments as he sits down next to me.

“I can’t even do that,” Jonathan remarks from his spot on Kailey’s other side. I roll my eyes at the pair of them. They insisted on coming with us and then a half hour after we got here left to go find food.

“I’ve been around longer, I know how to manipulate her better,” I get a one finger salute in response to that.

“So,” Patrick says when we’ve stopped laughing. “Who are we waiting for again?”

“A friend,” Kailey and I say in unison.

“He’s staying for the Western Conference Finals,” Kailey adds. “And probably the Cup Finals too.”

“We barely scraped past Winnipeg,” Jonathan says. “Don’t put too much confidence in us.”

Lies. Yes the series against Winnipeg went to game seven but we won and the guys fought hard for it. They were really good games and they are going to kick ass against the Ducks in two days.

“Wait your friend is a guy?” I’m not sure which one of them says it because at that moment people start arriving in our area.

Kailey and I jump up as soon as we see him.

“There are my girls!” he shouts. We all head over to him, Kailey and I in front. As soon as he reaches us he picks me up in a hug.

“Hey!” Kailey pouts. “I thought I was your favorite.”

He picks her up too and swings her around, making her laugh. “I was kidding!” she screams. “Put me down you loser!”

He laughs but puts her down. “Well next time don’t complain!”

We all three stare at each other before hugging again.

“Well girls shall we go?” he asks once we pull back.

“We shall,” Kailey says. They link arms and start walking, leaving a very angry looking Toews behind.

“Your friend is Tyler Seguin?” He asks me. I nod. “And does he always flirt with my girlfriend?”

“Pretty much constantly,” I tell him. “But it’s innocent don’t worry.”

“Yeah,” he mutters. “They look so innocent.” He storms after them, clearly intent on getting his girlfriend away from Ty.

“He’s not happy,” I remark.

“He’s not the only one,” Patrick says darkly next to me. I look up to see him glaring in Ty’s direction.

“Don’t worry, Kailey wasn’t kidding when she said she was the favorite. Ty is friends with both of us, but he knew her first.”

He completely ignores all of this. “Does Ty flirt with you too?”

“Yeah,” I admit. “But like I said it’s innocent.”

“Yeah,” he shakes his head but starts walking with me. “Innocent.”
