ch.12
16:40, 28 February 2025The next day, Helen sat on the bathroom floor, staring at the pregnancy test in her shaking hands. The two lines were clear as day. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. After everything, here she was again-pregnant.
She knew she couldn't keep this to herself. So, without hesitation, she grabbed her phone and called her friends. "Y'all need to come over. Now."
Within the hour, her living room was packed. Sophie, the other Sophie, Kylie, Danielle, Ariana, Malachi, and Walker sat on the couch, whispering and wondering why she had called them so urgently. Javon leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching her with a mix of curiosity and concern.
Helen took a deep breath, standing in front of the TV. "Okay, so... I have something to tell y'all." She swallowed hard, looking at all of their faces. "I'm pregnant."
Silence.
Then, chaos.
"What?!" Kylie nearly choked on her drink.
"Girl, you serious?" Danielle's eyes widened.
Ariana gasped, covering her mouth.
Javon, on the other hand, just stared at her, frozen in place. His expression was unreadable, and for a moment, Helen felt nervous. Then, finally, he blinked and let out a deep breath. "You're...pregnant?"
She nodded, biting her lip.
Without a word, Javon crossed the room and pulled her into a tight hug, holding her close. "We got this," he whispered in her ear, making her eyes well up with tears.
Her friends slowly processed the news, and then the room erupted with a mix of excitement, shock, and a million questions. Helen knew this was only the beginning, but for now, she let herself take in the moment-surrounded by the people she loved, with Javon by her side.
Helen pulled away from Javon slightly, wiping the corner of her eye before turning to face her friends with a smirk. "So, what do y'all think? Is it a girl again or a boy this time?"
Everyone started talking at once.
"A boy, for sure," Malachi said confidently, crossing his arms. "Javon needs a mini version of himself."
"Nah, I think it's another girl," Kylie argued. "Helen gives off girl-mom energy."
"Honestly, I could see either," Sophie added. "But imagine if it's twins."
Helen's eyes widened. "Don't put that on me!" she laughed.
Javon chuckled, pulling her back into his side. "I don't care what we have, as long as the baby's healthy."
Danielle grinned. "I say girl. It's giving 'girl gang' energy."
Helen laughed, shaking her head. "Well, we'll find out soon enough." She rested her hand on her stomach, feeling a wave of emotions-excitement, fear, but mostly love. This time, she was ready.
---
Helen lay in the hospital bed, her hands gripping the sheets as another contraction hit. Sweat beaded on her forehead, and she groaned, squeezing Javon's hand tightly.
"Damn, girl, you got a grip," Malachi joked, earning him a death glare from Helen.
"Say one more word, and I swear I'll make you feel this pain," she snapped, breathing heavily.
Kylie chuckled. "You got this, Helen. You're strong as hell."
Javon wiped her forehead with a cool cloth, his other hand still holding hers. "Just breathe, baby. Almost there." His voice was soft, but she could see the concern in his eyes.
Danielle sat on the couch, bouncing her leg anxiously. "This is so nerve-wracking, I feel like I'm the one in labor."
Ariana nodded. "For real. We've been here for hours."
Helen groaned again as another contraction hit, and the nurse walked in to check on her. "Alright, Helen, you're almost fully dilated. It's almost time."
Her heart pounded. She had waited nine months for this moment, and now it was finally happening. She turned her head toward Javon, her eyes filled with emotion. "Are you ready?"
He leaned down, kissing her forehead. "I've been ready since the moment you told me."
Tears welled in her eyes, but before she could say anything else, the doctor walked in with a pair of gloves and a reassuring smile. "Alright, Helen. Let's bring your baby into the world."
Everyone in the room tensed with anticipation as the moment they had all been waiting for finally arrived.
---
Helen screamed as the pain intensified, her body trembling as another contraction hit. The doctor positioned himself at the foot of the bed, giving instructions while the nurses moved around quickly.
"Alright, Helen, it's time. On the next contraction, I need you to push as hard as you can!" the doctor instructed.
Javon wiped her forehead, his face tense with worry. "You got this, baby. Just breathe."
Helen gritted her teeth. "Breathing ain't doing sh*t right now, Javon!" she snapped, making Kylie and Malachi exchange nervous glances.
"Okay, okay, push!" the doctor called.
Helen let out a deep scream, gripping Javon's hand so tight he winced. She felt like her body was splitting in two, but she pushed with everything she had.
"You're doing amazing, Helen! Keep going!" Ariana cheered from the side.
Tears streamed down Helen's face as she pushed again, her body exhausted but determined. The room was filled with encouragement from her friends and the medical team.
"One more big push!" the doctor said.
Helen clenched her jaw and pushed with everything in her, her screams echoing through the hospital room-until suddenly, the sound of a baby's first cry filled the air.
The room went silent for a split second before the doctor smiled, lifting the tiny baby up. "Congratulations, Helen! You have a beautiful baby girl!"
Helen gasped for air, her chest rising and falling as she tried to process everything. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she looked at the crying newborn in the doctor's hands.
Javon's face softened with pure emotion, his eyes shining. "She's here..." he whispered, his voice breaking.
The nurse gently placed the baby on Helen's chest, and the moment she felt her daughter's tiny warmth against her skin, she completely broke down.
"Hi, baby," she whispered shakily, brushing her finger against the little gi's cheek. "Mommy's here."
Javon leaned down, placing a soft kiss on both Helen's forehead and their daughter's tiny head. "We did it," he murmured.
Helen nodded weakly, still crying as she held her daughter close. "Yeah... we did."
Helen stared in awe as the soft baby pink butterfly fluttered into the room, landing gently on Ethan's tiny face. Her breath hitched, her heart pounding as an overwhelming warmth spread through her chest. She knew in that moment-it was her daughter.
Tears welled up in her eyes, but this time, they weren't just from pain or grief. It was peace. A sign.
She reached out, gently wiping a tear from her cheek as she leaned down and kissed her newborn son's forehead. "Ethan," she whispered, the name rolling off her tongue like it was always meant to be his.
Javon's eyes softened as he looked at her. "Ethan?"
Helen nodded, her voice shaking but full of certainty. "After my best friend who passed. And after my daughter... I know she sent him to me." She kissed Ethan's cheek, her heart full despite the pain she had endured.
The butterfly lingered for a moment longer, as if giving its own blessing, before it slowly lifted off and fluttered toward the open window, disappearing into the night.
Helen smiled through her tears, holding Ethan closer. "She's still watching over us," she murmured, her voice filled with both sorrow and love.
Javon wrapped an arm around her, pressing a kiss to her temple. "Yeah, she is."
---
Helen sat on the couch with her friends, watching as Javon knelt in front of little Ethan, holding his hands out like a boxing coach. Malachi held Ethan up, steadying the wobbly eight-month-old as he giggled and swung his tiny fists at Javon's hands.
"Come on, champ," Javon grinned, moving his hands slightly so Ethan could make contact. "Gotta start 'em young."
Ethan cooed excitedly, his chubby fists landing soft, uncoordinated punches against Javon's palms. The room filled with laughter as Ethan let out a little squeal, clearly enjoying himself.
"He's got the hands already," Kylie laughed, taking a sip of her drink.
"Yeah, but can he walk though?" Ariana teased, smirking.
Helen rolled her eyes but smiled as she watched her son try to take a step on his own, only to wobble and fall back into Malachi's arms. Ethan let out a dramatic little huff, pouting.
"Aww, it's okay, baby," Helen cooed, reaching for him. "Mommy's got you."
Ethan immediately brightened at her voice, reaching his little hands out to her. Malachi passed him over, and Helen kissed his chubby cheek, bouncing him in her arms.
Javon leaned over, playfully tapping Ethan's tiny nose. "Don't worry, champ. You'll be on your feet soon. Then I'ma have you running drills."
Ethan just giggled, grabbing at Javon's face and smacking his cheek in a way that had everyone cracking up.
"He just rocked your sh*t," Jayla cackled, making everyone laugh harder.
Helen shook her head, smiling. "Yeah, that's my boy."
Everyone settled in again as Malachi helped Ethan back onto his feet. The little boy wobbled, determination on his tiny face as he locked eyes with his dad. Javon held his hands up again, grinning.
"Aight, champ. Round two. Let's see what you got," Javon hyped him up, clapping his hands together.
Ethan let out an excited squeal and swung his little fists, his tiny arms moving faster than before. He connected with Javon's palm, making everyone cheer.
"Oooh, that one had some power!" Kylie laughed, pointing at Ethan like he was a real fighter.
"Boy got hands!" Malachi hyped, holding Ethan up as he wobbled again.
Ethan, feeding off the energy, let out a loud baby babble and threw another punch. This time, he swung so hard he knocked himself off balance and plopped straight onto his butt. There was a brief silence, everyone waiting to see if he would cry-but instead, Ethan blinked, then started laughing.
"Oh, he a real one," Ariana said, wiping a tear from laughing so hard.
Helen scooped Ethan up, kissing his chubby cheek. "My little fighter," she said, smoothing his curls. "You're gonna be a champ one day."
Javon smirked. "Nah, he already a champ."
Ethan cooed in response, grabbing onto Helen's necklace and playing with it as he snuggled into her. The whole room was filled with warmth and laughter as they all enjoyed the little moment-just a baby boy having fun with his family, completely unaware of how much love surrounded him.
Everyone was mid-conversation when Malachi suddenly burst out laughing.
"Ayo! Y'all see that? My boy Ethan getting girls already!" he hollered, pointing at the babies.
Everyone turned their heads just in time to see little Ethan giggling after planting a tiny kiss on Kali's lips. The whole room went silent for a second before chaos erupted.
"OH MY GOD!" Kylie shrieked, covering her mouth.
"Ain't no way," Danielle laughed, shaking her head.
Javon sat up, looking between Ethan and Kali with wide eyes. "Yo, my son moving mad already?" he joked, acting fake-offended. "You tryna bag girlfriends at eight months, bro?"
Helen, still holding Ethan's little hand, gasped playfully. "Ethan! You got a lil' crush?" she teased, making Ethan grin up at her like he knew exactly what he did.
Kali just giggled, clapping her tiny hands like she was proud of herself.
"Aww, they gonna be childhood sweethearts!" Ariana cooed, fake crying.
"Yeah, until they grow up and pretend this never happened," Sophie laughed.
Everyone kept hyping the babies up while Ethan and Kali just kept playing like nothing happened. Helen shook her head, kissing Ethan's forehead.
"My son out here making moves before he can even walk straight," she joked. "I'm scared for the future."
The whole room burst into laughter, the moment adding just another unforgettable memory to their little chaotic family.
wasn't sure if she was ready for whatever this visit was about.
Javon glanced at her. "You want me to tell her to leave?"
Helen exhaled and shook her head. "Nah... let her in."
Ariana opened the door, and Beyoncรฉ stepped inside, dressed casually in jeans and a designer hoodie, but still looking like she was ready to perform at a sold-out stadium. Her eyes scanned the room before landing on Helen.
"Hey," Beyoncรฉ said softly.
Helen crossed her arms, leaning back on the couch. "Hey."
The room was tense. Everyone was waiting to see how this was gonna play out. Even Ethan and Kali had stopped playing, as if they could sense the energy shift.
Beyoncรฉ sighed. "I know I should've called first, but I just... I wanted to see you. And Ethan." She gave a small smile. "Blue's been asking about you, too."
Helen's expression softened slightly at the mention of her little sister. "She could've called me herself."
"She was scared you'd ignore her," Beyoncรฉ admitted. "She looks up to you, you know."
Helen looked down, her fingers tapping against her knee. She wasn't used to hearing this. "I don't hate Blue," she said. "I just... I still don't know how to feel about you."
Beyoncรฉ nodded, as if she understood. "I get it. And I don't expect things to change overnight. But I do want to be in your life now. If you'll let me."
Helen stared at her for a moment, then sighed, glancing over at Ethan. The baby boy was chewing on a toy, completely unaware of the conversation.
"I don't know," Helen admitted. "But... I'll think about it."
Beyoncรฉ smiled, and that was enough for now.
Ariana, clearly done with the heavy moment, clapped her hands together. "Whew, okay! Since we all being sentimental and sh*t, who tryna order food? I'm starving."
Everyone laughed, and just like that, the tension in the room eased. Helen wasn't sure what was gonna happen between her and her mom, but for now, she was willing to at least see where it went.
Later that evening, everyone was gathered in the living room, eating takeout and joking around. Helen sat on the couch with Ethan in her lap, absentmindedly playing with his tiny fingers as she listened to the conversation.
Javon sat beside her, his arm draped over the back of the couch. "So," he said between bites of food, "are we gonna talk about how Ethan already got a girl before I did at his age?"
Everyone laughed, remembering how Ethan had kissed Kali earlier.
Malachi smirked. "Bro, he smooth with it. Took one look at Kali and said, 'Yeah, that's mine.'"
Helen chuckled, shaking her head. "Y'all better stop hyping him up. He's a baby."
"But a player in the making," Kylie teased.
Beyoncรฉ, who had stayed for dinner, smiled softly as she watched. "He's adorable," she said, looking at Ethan. "Looks a lot like you, Helen."
Helen glanced at her mom but didn't say anything. It was still weird having her around, but she was trying.
As the night went on, everyone slowly started leaving, one by one, until it was just Helen, Javon, and Ethan. Helen stood in the kitchen, cleaning up while Javon played with Ethan in the living room.
Javon walked into the kitchen, holding Ethan on his hip. "You good?" he asked, leaning against the counter.
Helen sighed, drying her hands. "Yeah, just a lot on my mind."
Javon nodded. "Your mom?"
She nodded, biting her lip. "It's weird, you know? Having her here. I spent so many years hating her, and now she's acting like she wants to be in my life. I don't know how to feel."
Javon shifted Ethan to his other hip. "I get it. But maybe it's not about knowing how to feel right now. Maybe just take it day by day."
Helen looked at him and smiled slightly. "When did you get so wise?"
He smirked. "Been hanging around you too long."
Ethan cooed in his arms, grabbing at Javon's nose. Helen laughed softly, watching the two most important people in her life.
"Come on," she said, reaching for Ethan. "Let's get this little guy to bed."
As she carried Ethan upstairs, she realized that no matter what happened with her mom, she had a family of her own now. And that was all that mattered.
Chapter: New Beginnings
A few weeks had passed since Helen had reconnected with her mom, and things were starting to feel... different. Not bad, just different. She was still adjusting to having Beyoncรฉ in her life again, and although there was still tension, they were slowly learning how to exist around each other without arguing.
Right now, though, her focus was on Ethan's first birthday party.
"Okay, does everything look good?" Helen asked, standing in the backyard, hands on her hips. The decorations were set-baby blue and white balloons, a huge banner that said Happy 1st Birthday, Ethan!, and a play area filled with toys for the babies.
Javon walked up behind her, placing a hand on her waist. "Looks perfect."
Helen turned to him, raising an eyebrow. "You're just saying that."
"I mean, yeah," he admitted with a grin, "but it actually does look good."
She rolled her eyes playfully before looking over at Ethan, who was sitting on a blanket with Kali, clapping his hands excitedly. Their little friend group was already arriving-Malachi, Jayla, Sophie, Danielle, and a few others. Even Blue Ivy was coming.
"You nervous?" Javon asked.
Helen scoffed. "For a one-year-old's birthday party? No."
Javon tilted his head, smirking. "Not about the party. About your mom coming."
She sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I don't know. I guess? It's still weird, but I'm trying."
He nodded, understanding. "Well, no matter what happens, I got you."
Helen smiled softly, leaning into him. "I know."
As guests started arriving, the backyard filled with laughter and music. The babies played, the adults talked, and for once, everything felt normal.
Then, Beyoncรฉ arrived.
Helen saw her mom step in with Jay-Z and Blue Ivy, carrying a wrapped present. Their eyes met, and Helen took a deep breath, forcing a small smile.
"Hey," Beyoncรฉ said softly.
"Hey," Helen replied.
For the first time, she didn't feel resentment-just an odd sense of peace. Maybe, just maybe, things could be okay.
Chapter: A Step Forward
The party was in full swing, laughter filling the air as everyone enjoyed themselves. Ethan was sitting in his high chair, giggling as Kali fed him tiny bites of cake. Helen couldn't help but smile at the sight, but her mind was elsewhere.
She glanced toward Beyoncรฉ, who was sitting with Jay-Z and Blue Ivy, occasionally stealing glances at her. Helen knew her mom was trying, but it still felt... unfamiliar.
Javon nudged her gently. "You okay?"
She let out a breath. "Yeah. Just... still adjusting."
He nodded, rubbing her back. "Take your time. No rush."
As the party continued, Beyoncรฉ finally made her way over. Helen stiffened slightly but stayed put.
"Hey," Beyoncรฉ said, offering a small smile. "The party is beautiful. Ethan looks so happy."
Helen studied her for a moment before nodding. "Yeah, he's having fun."
An awkward silence followed. Helen could see Blue Ivy looking at them from a distance, clearly hoping they'd make progress.
Beyoncรฉ sighed. "Look, I know I can't change the past. And I know I've hurt you... a lot. But I just want you to know that I'm here now. If you'll let me be."
Helen stared at her mom, emotions clashing inside her. A year ago, she would've snapped. But now? She was tired of holding onto all the anger.
She sighed. "I don't know how to do this... but I guess we can try."
Beyoncรฉ's face softened, and for the first time, Helen saw a genuine, almost relieved expression. "That's all I ask."
Helen gave her a small nod before glancing at Ethan, who was now clapping his hands. A tiny smile formed on her lips. Maybe, just maybe, they could make this work.
As the night continued, Helen sat with her friends, Javon's arm draped over her shoulder. It wasn't perfect, but for the first time in a long time, she felt at peace.
Chapter: New Beginnings
A few weeks had passed since the party, and Helen was slowly adjusting to her new reality. Her relationship with her mom was still awkward but improving. Ethan was growing fast, and his personality was already starting to shine through. He was playful, energetic, and had his dad's determination.
Helen sat in the backyard with Javon, Malachi, Ariana, and Sophie while Ethan played with Kali on the grass. The kids were laughing as they chased each other around, their tiny feet stumbling over the soft grass.
"So... now that things have calmed down a little, what's next for you?" Malachi asked, leaning back in his chair.
Helen took a sip of her lemonade, shrugging. "Music, of course. I've been in the studio a lot lately. Got some crazy tracks coming."
"Ooooh," Ariana grinned. "We getting another diss track?"
Helen laughed. "Nah, not this time. I'm in my 'growth era' or whatever."
Javon smirked. "We'll see how long that lasts."
She playfully elbowed him, making him chuckle.
Just then, Ethan stumbled toward her, reaching his tiny hands up. "Mama!"
Helen's heart melted as she picked him up, resting him on her hip. "What's up, baby?"
Ethan giggled, his chubby hands patting her face. Kali ran up beside them, hugging Helen's leg.
Sophie snapped a picture. "Y'all are too cute. That's gonna be a fire Instagram post."
Helen rolled her eyes but smiled. "Y'all stay putting me on the timeline."
Malachi chuckled. "Of course. You're a star, whether you like it or not."
Helen looked around at her friends, her son, and Javon. Life was still complicated, but for the first time, it didn't feel overwhelming. She was surrounded by people who truly loved her.
And for now, that was enough.
Sophie swung the door open, and there he was-Sugarhill Ddot, or as Helen had always called him, Darriann. A wide grin spread across her face as she stood up, adjusting Ethan on her hip.
"Ayeee, look who finally decided to show up!" Helen teased, walking over.
Ddot smirked, stepping inside. "Man, don't act like you ain't miss me."
Helen playfully rolled her eyes but pulled him into a quick hug. "Of course, I did, dummy."
Javon, who had been chilling on the couch, glanced over at Ddot, his expression neutral but observant. Malachi raised his eyebrows at the interaction, already sensing the energy in the room.
Ddot dapped up Malachi and the rest of the group before his eyes landed on Ethan. "Damn, that's lil man?" He leaned down, looking at Ethan, who stared at him with wide eyes before grabbing a fistful of Ddot's hoodie.
Helen laughed. "Yeah, this is my son, Ethan."
Ddot chuckled, letting Ethan tug on his hoodie. "He got your attitude already, I can tell."
Sophie smirked as she watched the interaction. "So, what brings you here, Ddot?"
Ddot shrugged, looking back at Helen. "Wanted to check in. We ain't really talked like that in a minute. Plus, I heard you been working on some new music."
Helen nodded. "Yeah, I got some heat coming. You tryna hop on a track?"
Ddot smirked. "You already know I'm down."
Javon, who had been silent for most of the conversation, finally spoke up. "You still rapping about the same old drill stuff?"
Ddot looked at him, smirking. "You already know, bro. But I can switch it up when needed."
Helen sensed the tension between the two and quickly changed the subject. "Aight, y'all, let's not turn this into a rap battle in my living room."
Ariana snickered. "Lowkey, I'd pay to see that."
Malachi nodded. "Facts."
Ddot laughed and sat down. "Man, y'all crazy."
Helen smiled, feeling a sense of nostalgia. Having Ddot back in the mix felt good. It reminded her of the old days before everything got so complicated.
But deep down, she knew things weren't the same. Life had changed. She had changed.
And she wasn't sure what that meant for them.
As the movie played in the background, I sat on the couch with my notebook, jotting down lyrics while Ddot peeked over my shoulder.
"You always writing, huh?" he chuckled, taking a sip of his drink.
I smirked, tapping my pen against the page. "You know me. Gotta stay ahead."
Ddot leaned back against the couch. "Lemme see what you got so far."
I handed him the notebook, and he skimmed over the words, nodding his head. "This tough. You got that real pain in your bars."
"That's all I know how to do," I said, crossing my legs. "You down to match my energy, or you just gon' come in with drill vibes?"
Ddot smirked. "I can do both. Let me write my verse real quick."
While he scribbled in my notebook, I glanced at the TV. Everyone else was still watching the movie, but I could feel Javon's eyes on me. I ignored it for now and focused back on the lyrics.
A few minutes later, Ddot passed the notebook back. "Aight, tell me what you think."
I read through his verse and smiled. "Yeah, this gon' be fire. We recording this tomorrow."
Ddot grinned. "Bet. This gonna be a classic."
Javon shifted in his seat. "Y'all already planning a session?"
I looked at him. "Yeah, why?"
Javon shrugged, but I could tell something was off. "Just wondering."
I sighed, shaking my head. I wasn't about to get into it right now. Instead, I turned back to Ddot. "You staying over or heading out?"
"Nah, I'll dip in a bit," he said. "But tomorrow, we locking in."
I nodded. "For sure."
As the night went on, I couldn't shake the feeling that things were getting more complicated. But for now, I just focused on the music.
As I settled back on the couch, I finished writing the last few lines of my verse, my pen gliding smoothly across the paper. Ethan crawled into my lap, his tiny hands resting on my arm as he looked up at me with his big, curious eyes. I smiled down at him, running my fingers through his soft curls before turning my attention back to the TV.
But I could feel it-the tension in the room was thick.
Javon hadn't said much since Ddot left, but I knew him well enough to know when something was on his mind. His arms were crossed, his jaw tight as he watched the screen. My friends were pretending not to notice, but I could tell they felt it too.
Ariana cleared her throat. "Sooo... what's the plan for tomorrow? Y'all recording at the studio or at the house?"
I shrugged. "Probably the studio. Gotta make sure everything sounds right."
Javon scoffed under his breath, barely loud enough for me to hear.
I exhaled slowly. "You got something to say, Javon?"
He finally looked at me, his eyes dark with something unreadable. "Nah, just thinking."
I rolled my eyes. "About what?"
He hesitated before shaking his head. "Forget it."
I didn't press him, but I could feel the weight of his stare on me as I turned back to the TV. Ethan babbled in my lap, completely unaware of the unspoken conversation happening above his head.
I kissed the top of his head, my mind racing with thoughts. This tension... it wasn't just about Ddot. It was something more. And sooner or later, it was all gonna come out.
As Ddot got up to leave, I stood up with him, pulling him into a long hug. "See you tomorrow, right?" I said, squeezing him tighter for a moment.
"Yeah, we gotta make that heat," he replied, pulling back and giving me a smile before heading for the door.
As soon as he left, I closed the door softly behind him and walked back to the couch. Ethan was playing with his toy, crawling around on the floor, so I scooped him up and placed him in my lap. The tension in the air was thick.
I tried to focus on the TV, but I could feel Javon's eyes on me. I could sense the jealousy radiating from him, even though he hadn't said a word. The silence between us was suffocating.
Finally, I broke it. "Javon, we've been friends with Ddot for years. He's been there for me through a lot. You know that."
Javon clenched his fists, jaw tightening. "I get it, Helen, but you're always so comfortable with him. I don't like the way he looks at you sometimes. You know how I feel about him."
I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. I wasn't about to let my anger take over again. "Javon, you gotta trust me. There's nothing between us. He's like family."
He stood up from the couch, frustration mounting. "I'm tired of hearing about family. You always say that, but it's different when you're with him. Don't act like I don't notice."
I tried to ignore him, refocusing on Ethan, who was still playing in my lap, but the anger in Javon's voice only grew louder. "I'm serious, Helen! I don't like how this feels!"
I held my breath, fighting to keep my temper in check. "Javon, please," I said quietly, hoping the calmness would diffuse the tension.
But he wasn't listening. He raised his voice, louder than before. "You're ignoring me, aren't you? You don't get it! You're making it worse, Helen!"
I felt my heart start to race, and I gripped the edges of the couch, trying to steady myself. Ethan was looking up at me with curious eyes, unaware of the storm brewing in the room.
I didn't respond, knowing that if I did, it would only escalate things. So, I stayed quiet, ignoring his outbursts, hoping he would calm down. But he didn't.
Javon slammed his hand on the counter, a look of pure frustration on his face. "I'm done trying to talk to you when you just shut me out!"
I took another deep breath, keeping my eyes fixed on Ethan, doing my best to block everything out.
But it didn't stop him. He stormed out of the room, and I just sat there, frozen in the silence.
I sighed, feeling the weight of the moment as I looked down at Ethan's teary eyes. His little face was scrunched up, and my heart ached seeing him upset. I rolled my eyes in frustration-not at him, but at the situation Javon had just created.
"Shh, baby, it's okay," I whispered, lifting him into my arms and bouncing him gently. I swayed back and forth, trying to calm him down as his tiny hands clutched onto my shirt.
My chest tightened with guilt. No matter how much I tried to ignore Javon's jealousy, it was affecting more than just me. Ethan didn't understand what was going on, but he felt the tension, the raised voices, the anger in the air. And now, he was crying because of it.
I kissed the top of his curly head, rubbing his back as he sniffled against me. "It's okay, mommy's here," I reassured him softly.
The room was quiet now, except for Ethan's little hiccups as he started to settle. My mind raced with emotions-anger, frustration, exhaustion. I hated fighting with Javon, but I also hated feeling like I had to justify my friendships.
Taking a deep breath, I walked over to the couch and sat down with Ethan still in my arms. His tiny fingers clung to me like he didn't want to let go.
Maybe it was time for me and Javon to really talk. Not argue. Not ignore each other. But actually sit down and figure this out. Because if we kept going like this, it wasn't just hurting us-it was hurting Ethan, too.
Helen clenched her fists, her breathing heavy as she handed Ethan over to Sophie. Her heart pounded in her chest, anger bubbling inside her like a volcano ready to erupt.
As soon as Javon walked back in, she turned to him, her voice sharp and filled with frustration. "Are you serious right now? You made my baby cry, Javon! Over what? Over some jealous nonsense that doesn't even make sense?"
Javon sighed, rubbing his hands down his face. "Helen, it's not nonsense. You don't get it-"
"No, YOU don't get it!" she snapped, stepping closer. "You act like I did something wrong just because I have a friend that I've known forever! And you wanna take it out on me? Yell? Make my son cry? Do you realize how upsetting that is?"
Her voice was getting louder, her chest rising and falling rapidly. The heat of her anger coursed through her veins, her hands shaking as her emotions took control.
"You're so damn insecure, and it's exhausting! I shouldn't have to explain myself every time I talk to someone, especially someone I've been friends with since I was a kid! Grow up, Javon!"
Javon's jaw tightened, but before he could respond, Kylie stepped in, gently grabbing Helen's wrist. "Helen, breathe," she said softly.
Helen yanked her hand away. "No! I'm tired of this! I'm tired of feeling like I can't have friends without my own boyfriend throwing a fit! It's childish, and I don't have time for it."
Kylie exchanged a quick glance with Sophie, who still held Ethan protectively. Seeing the way Helen's chest was heaving, her eyes filled with pure rage, Kylie knew this could spiral fast.
"Come on, let's go upstairs," Kylie said, grabbing Helen's arm again, but firmer this time.
Helen tried to shake her off, but Kylie wouldn't let go. "Now, Helen."
With an exasperated groan, Helen finally gave in, stomping toward the stairs. "This isn't over," she threw over her shoulder at Javon before Kylie led her away.
As they reached her room, Kylie closed the door and turned to her. "You have to calm down. This isn't good for you."
Helen sat on the edge of her bed, her hands gripping the sheets as she tried to steady her breathing. "I just-I can't deal with this, Kylie. I hate fighting with him, but I hate feeling like this even more."
Kylie sighed, sitting beside her. "Then maybe it's time you and Javon really talk this out. But not when you're angry. You love him, Helen, and I know he loves you. But if you guys don't fix this now, it's only going to get worse."
Helen exhaled slowly, her anger beginning to fade into exhaustion. Maybe Kylie was right. Maybe it was time to finally lay everything out on the table.
Helen sighed as she pulled the blanket over her, feeling the warmth of Kylie beside her. She was still tense from the argument, but as Kylie wrapped her arms around her, she felt herself slowly start to relax.
"You good?" Kylie asked softly, running a hand through Helen's hair.
Helen let out a deep breath. "Not really."
Kylie rested her chin on top of Helen's head. "I get it. Javon's being stupid, but y'all are gonna be fine. You just need to talk when you're both calm."
Helen closed her eyes, sinking into Kylie's hold. "I know... but it's just exhausting, Ky. I don't wanna keep fighting about the same thing over and over."
"Then don't," Kylie said simply. "Set your boundaries. Let him know you're not putting up with this insecure shit. If he trusts you, he won't make it a problem again."
Helen hummed in response, her fingers absentmindedly tracing patterns on Kylie's arm. The room was quiet except for the sound of their breathing and the faint noise of the movie still playing downstairs.
After a moment, Kylie chuckled. "I know you love Javon, but honestly, if he keeps pissing you off, I might just steal you for myself."
Helen smirked. "You wish."
"I do," Kylie teased, squeezing her tighter. "You're too fine for all this stress, bestie."
Helen giggled softly, finally starting to feel at ease. Maybe everything would work out after all.
The next morning, Helen woke up feeling a little lighter, but she knew she had to talk to Javon. She found him sitting on the couch, his head in his hands, looking like he had barely slept.
She took a deep breath and sat down next to him. "Javon, we need to talk."
He looked up at her, his expression full of regret. "I know. I messed up, Helen. I shouldn't have gotten so jealous. I just... I hate the idea of losing you."
Helen sighed. "Javon, you're not gonna lose me, but you have to trust me. Ddot is my friend. That's it. You getting mad over nothing is making things worse between us."
Javon rubbed his face. "I know, I know. It's just... I see how close y'all are, and I guess I let my insecurities get the best of me. But that's on me, not you."
Helen softened a little. "Yeah, it is. Because I've never given you a reason to doubt me."
Javon nodded. "You're right. And I'm sorry for making Ethan cry too. That was outta line."
Helen studied him for a moment before sighing. "I just need you to trust me, Javon. I can't keep dealing with this same argument every time I talk to another guy."
Javon reached for her hand. "I trust you, Helen. I swear, I do. I just gotta work on myself. I don't wanna lose you or our family."
Helen looked at him for a long moment, then squeezed his hand. "Then prove it to me."
He nodded, determination in his eyes. "I will."
She leaned her head on his shoulder, and for the first time in a while, it felt like they were back on the same page.
As they all settled into the studio, the vibe was electric. The air smelled like a mix of fruity snacks and studio equipment, and everyone was hyped. Helen sat on the couch, bouncing Ethan lightly on her knee while Kali sat beside her, playing with Malachi's hoodie strings.
Javon sat close, scrolling on his phone, but Helen could feel his eyes darting toward her and Ddot every so often. She ignored it-now wasn't the time for unnecessary tension. They were here to work.
Ddot, always full of energy, leaned forward. "Aight, I'm up first. Watch me set the tone." He shot Helen a wink before stepping into the booth.
Everyone got quiet as the beat started playing through the speakers. Helen nodded along, feeling the rhythm, while Ddot delivered his verse flawlessly. His flow was smooth, and his lyrics hit hard. Even the engineer was nodding along, impressed.
When he stepped out of the booth, he grinned at Helen. "Your turn, superstar."
Helen rolled her eyes, but she was smiling. "Yeah, yeah. Let me show you how it's really done."
Everyone hyped her up as she walked into the booth, slipping on the headphones. The beat started again, and she closed her eyes for a second, letting the music take over. Then, she went in.
Her lyrics carried raw emotion-pain, love, struggle, everything she had been through. Her voice was powerful, commanding attention. By the time she finished, the whole room was silent for a second before erupting into cheers.
Ddot clapped, shaking his head. "Damn, Helen, you ain't have to go that hard."
Sophie grinned. "Oh, this one's definitely going #1."
Malachi nodded. "Ain't even a question."
Helen laughed, walking back to her seat. Javon finally spoke up, his voice softer than before. "Yeah... you killed it, babe."
She turned to him, catching the way he looked at her-proud, but still holding onto some unspoken thoughts. She decided to let it be.
For now, it was just about the music, the moment, and the people who had her back.
Two days later, the song Lovely was officially released on all platforms. The anticipation had been building since they recorded it, and as soon as it dropped, social media exploded. Fans were already flooding Helen and Ddot's comments, calling it a masterpiece, and clips of the song were trending everywhere.
Helen sat on the couch with Ethan in her lap, scrolling through her phone. "Y'all, we already hit #2 on Apple Music charts," she announced, grinning.
Ddot, who was on FaceTime with them, smirked. "Ain't even been 24 hours yet. We 'bout to take that #1 spot real soon."
Sophie squealed. "I told y'all! This song is different."
Malachi was scrolling on his phone too. "Nah, bro, the reactions are crazy. Look at this TikTok edit-people already making trends."
Helen clicked the video, watching clips of her and Ddot rapping in the studio, mixed with aesthetic edits of the lyrics. It made her smile. Music was her escape, her way of expressing everything she had bottled up inside.
Javon, sitting next to her, leaned over to glance at her screen. "That's fire," he admitted. "I knew y'all had a hit."
Helen looked at him, sensing something behind his words, but before she could ask, Kali clapped her hands. "We need to celebrate! Y'all just made a charting song."
Helen smirked. "Y'all tryna go out tonight?"
The room instantly filled with excitement, everyone throwing out ideas of where to go. But Helen, despite the happiness of the moment, couldn't shake the feeling that something was still on Javon's mind.
Maybe later, when it was just them, she'd ask. But for now, she wanted to enjoy this win.
Before heading out, Helen made sure Ethan and Kali were settled with Marshall. "Y'all be good for grandpa, okay?" she said, kissing Ethan's forehead while Kali giggled. Marshall just waved them off. "Go enjoy yourselves. I got this."
With that settled, they all met up outside. The night air was crisp, and everyone was excited. Helen adjusted her outfit as they walked toward the car. That's when she noticed Ddot wasn't alone-he had brought David, also known as DD.
For a split second, she tensed up, expecting some kind of salty energy from David. But to her surprise, he was acting completely normal-no tension, no side comments. Instead, he greeted everyone casually, even dapping up Javon without an issue.
"Y'all ready to turn up?" Ddot grinned, clearly excited for the night.
Helen gave David a quick glance before nodding. "Yeah, let's do this."
She wasn't about to let the past ruin a good night. If David wanted to be chill, she could match that energy. Tonight was about celebrating Lovely and enjoying life. No drama-at least, she hoped.
They all piled into the cars, the energy buzzing with excitement. Helen sat in the front seat while Ddot played some unreleased music in the back, hyping everyone up. Javon sat beside her, his arm resting casually over the center console. She could tell he was keeping an eye on David, but for now, everything seemed smooth.
After a short drive, they arrived at the lounge Ddot had rented out for the night to celebrate Lovely's release. The place had a chill vibe-dim lights, a private booth, and a DJ spinning tracks in the background.
As soon as they walked in, people recognized them, some coming up to congratulate Helen and Ddot on the song. "Y'all killed that track!" someone said, making Helen smile. The song had been blowing up since its release, and seeing people vibe with it in real life made it even better.
They settled into their booth, ordering drinks and food while music filled the air. Helen leaned back, letting the atmosphere sink in. She was finally relaxing, enjoying herself-until David spoke up.
"Yo, Helen, real talk. I was surprised you and Ddot finally dropped something together. Thought you were too busy for him these days."
Javon tensed beside her, and Helen shot David a look. "What's that supposed to mean?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
David shrugged, sipping his drink. "Nothing. Just saying, y'all used to be real close. Then you kinda... drifted."
Ddot laughed, trying to lighten the mood. "Man, shut up. We been locked in. This was just the right time."
Helen smirked, playing along. "Exactly. Timing is everything."
David nodded, but Helen could tell there was something behind his words. She wasn't about to let him stir up anything, though. Tonight was about celebrating, not drama.
Javon, however, wasn't as quick to brush it off. He leaned forward, eyeing David. "You got something to say, just say it."
David smirked, leaning back in his seat. "Nah, bro, it's all love."
Helen rolled her eyes, deciding to ignore it. Instead, she focused on the music, the laughter, and the good energy. She wasn't about to let anyone ruin the night-not David, not anyone.
The energy at the table shifted when David suddenly smirked, swirling his drink before speaking up.
"You know, since we're all reminiscing... Javon, you ever hear about the time Helen and Ddot kissed?"
The whole table went silent. The music playing in the background seemed distant as everyone turned to look at David, then at Helen and Ddot. Helen's jaw clenched, her fingers tightening around her glass. Ddot shifted uncomfortably, glancing at her like he was debating whether to say something or let her handle it.
Javon, who had been relaxed just moments ago, suddenly sat up straight. His eyes locked onto Helen. "Is that true?" His tone was controlled, but there was an undeniable edge to it.
Helen sighed, rubbing her temple before looking at him. "Yeah... it happened. But that was before we got together. Way before."
David leaned back, clearly enjoying the chaos he had just created. "Oh yeah, way before. But what you don't know, Javon, is why she left in the first place."
Helen's whole body tensed. "David, shut up."
But he wasn't stopping. "She dipped on Ddot, left all of us, because of Ethan and Edot. When they died, she couldn't handle it. She ran."
The weight of his words hit like a brick wall. Helen felt like the air had been sucked out of the room. The pain she had buried, the grief she had tried so hard to move past, was suddenly laid out in front of everyone like an open wound.
Javon looked at her again, his expression unreadable. "Is that true?" he asked, his voice softer this time.
Helen swallowed hard, nodding. "Yeah. I couldn't stay. It hurt too much."
Ddot finally spoke up, his voice calm but firm. "It wasn't like that, Javon. Yeah, we kissed, but it didn't mean anything. And when she left, it wasn't about me. She lost people she loved. We all did."
Helen looked at Javon, searching his face for any sign of anger or betrayal, but all she saw was... hurt.
Javon exhaled, running a hand down his face. "I just wish I heard it from you instead of him."
Helen felt a pang of guilt in her chest. "I was gonna tell you. One day. But I didn't want to bring up old pain when we were building something new."
David scoffed. "Well, congrats. Now it's all out in the open."
Helen shot him a glare. "You're real messy, you know that?"
David smirked but said nothing else. The damage was done.
Javon stood up, shaking his head. "I need some air."
Helen started to go after him, but Ddot gently grabbed her wrist. "Let him breathe," he said softly. "He just needs a minute."
Helen sighed, sinking back into her seat as the tension in the room lingered. What was supposed to be a night of celebration had turned into a storm of the past crashing into the present.
Helen sat there, lost in thought, her fingers lightly gripping Ariana's hand for comfort. The weight of everything that had just unfolded pressed down on her chest. She didn't even realize how tense she was until she felt Ddot's arm gently wrap around her waist. His warmth was grounding, a silent reassurance that he was there.
Ariana squeezed Helen's hand, her voice soft. "You good?"
Helen exhaled sharply, shaking her head. "Not really."
Ddot's grip tightened slightly. "Javon just needs time. He's pissed, but he'll come around."
Helen closed her eyes for a second, her jaw clenching. "It's not just that. It's the fact that David had to be the one to say it. Like, he knew what he was doing."
Ariana rolled her eyes. "David lives for drama. He wasn't just spilling tea, he was pouring the whole damn pot."
Ddot chuckled, but Helen could tell he was still keeping a close eye on her, like he was waiting for her to break.
"I just..." Helen trailed off, staring at the floor. "I don't know how to fix this."
Ddot pulled her in slightly, his voice low so only she could hear. "You don't gotta fix everything, H. Let him be mad for now. He'll come to you when he's ready."
Helen nodded slowly, but the knot in her stomach didn't ease. She just hoped Ddot was right.
The tension lingered as Helen sat there, staring at nothing in particular. Ariana was scrolling on her phone, while Ddot's arm stayed comfortably around her waist.
Then, the door swung open.
Javon walked in. His expression was unreadable, but Helen could tell he was still mad. His jaw was clenched, his shoulders tense. His eyes flickered to Ddot's arm around her, and for a moment, Helen thought he was about to say something. Instead, he exhaled sharply and sat down across from them.
"So, is this how it is now?" Javon's voice was low but firm.
Helen sighed, sitting up. "Javon, don't start."
"No, I wanna understand," he said, leaning forward. "So while I'm out here looking stupid, David gets to drop news about how you and Ddot kissed, and you just sit there like it's nothing?"
Helen's patience was already wearing thin. "It was before us, Javon."
"Doesn't make it less weird," he shot back.
Ddot rolled his eyes and moved his arm from around Helen. "Man, you're making this a bigger deal than it is. It happened forever ago."
Javon let out a bitter laugh. "You always got something to say, huh?"
Ariana groaned. "Can y'all not?"
Helen stood up suddenly, her anger bubbling. "You need to let this go, Javon! It's done! Why are you acting like I cheated on you?"
Javon's nostrils flared. "Because it's not just about that! It's about the fact that you left-that you ran away instead of talking to me, instead of letting me be there for you!"
Helen froze.
Javon's voice cracked slightly as he continued. "I was there, Helen. I wanted to be there. But you shut me out. And now, I'm supposed to just be cool with this?"
The room fell silent.
Helen opened her mouth, but no words came out. She could see the hurt in Javon's eyes, and it twisted something inside her.
Ddot glanced between them, then sighed. "I'ma step out." He got up, patting Helen's shoulder before leaving the room.
Ariana shifted awkwardly. "I'ma... go too."
Once they were alone, Helen finally spoke. "I'm sorry." Her voice was small, but she meant it.
Javon ran a hand over his face. "I just don't wanna lose you, Helen."
Helen stepped closer, grabbing his hands. "You won't."
He looked at her for a long moment before pulling her into a tight hug, his grip almost desperate.
Helen closed her eyes. Maybe, just maybe, they could work through this.
A few days had passed since Helen and Javon had their argument. Things weren't completely back to normal, but they were trying. Helen could tell Javon was still a little uneasy, but he was making an effort, and that was all she could ask for.
Tonight, everyone was at Helen's house, sitting around in the living room. Kali and Ethan were playing on the floor while the rest of the group was talking and eating snacks. Ddot was there, along with David, Ariana, Sophie, Malachi, Kylie, and Walker. The vibe was chill, but there was still a little tension in the air.
Javon had his arm around Helen, holding her close, as if silently reminding everyone that she was his.
Ddot noticed, but didn't say anything. He just leaned back on the couch, playing with his rings.
"So," Malachi said, breaking the silence. "Are we just gonna ignore the fact that Helen and Ddot dropped a banger and it's already #1 on Apple Music?"
Helen smiled. "I was waiting for y'all to say something."
Ariana playfully smacked her arm. "Girl, why didn't you tell us it was blowing up?"
"Because I wanted to see if y'all were real supporters or fake ones," Helen joked.
David grinned. "Well, I been streaming it all day. That song hits."
Ddot smirked. "Told y'all we made magic in the studio."
Javon exhaled through his nose but didn't say anything. Helen squeezed his hand, silently telling him to let it go.
"We should celebrate," Kylie suggested. "Go out or something."
Helen thought about it. A night out actually sounded nice. "I'm down. What about y'all?"
Everyone agreed, except Javon.
"You not coming?" Helen asked, raising an eyebrow.
Javon hesitated, then sighed. "Nah, I'll stay home with Ethan."
Helen studied him. She could tell he didn't really want her going out with Ddot there, but he wasn't going to start another argument.
She leaned in and kissed his cheek. "I love you."
Javon softened a little. "I love you too."
With that, everyone got up to start getting ready for the night.
This was going to be interesting.
After getting ready, Helen and her friends left the house, heading to one of the hottest lounges in the city. Ddot had reserved a section for them, making sure everything was set up for a night of celebration.
As soon as they walked in, the music was loud, the lights were dim, and the energy was high. Helen wore a sleek black dress with heels, her makeup flawless. She felt good-confident, excited, and ready to have fun.
Ddot walked beside her, his chain glistening under the lights. He leaned over slightly. "You looking good, ma. You sure Javon cool with you being out?"
Helen rolled her eyes playfully. "Javon trusts me. We talked about it."
Ddot chuckled. "Aight, just checking."
The group made their way to their VIP section, taking their seats on the plush couches. The drinks and food were already there, and the music set the perfect vibe.
"To Helen and Ddot's song going number one!" Sophie cheered, raising her glass.
"Cheers!" Everyone clinked their drinks together, laughing and smiling.
As the night went on, Helen found herself actually enjoying being around Ddot again. They had history-good and bad-but their friendship was still there.
David, of course, couldn't help himself. "Man, y'all really got history, huh?" he said, smirking.
Helen gave him a side-eye. "What are you getting at?"
David shrugged. "I mean, we all know y'all kissed before. And then Helen disappeared on bro after Notti and Edot died. That's crazy."
The table went silent.
Ddot tensed, glancing at Helen. She inhaled sharply, her grip tightening on her glass.
"David," Ariana warned, "not the time."
David raised his hands. "I'm just saying. That's a lot of unfinished business, don't you think?"
Helen exhaled, trying to keep herself calm. She hated when people brought up Notti and Edot. That pain never really went away. And bringing up her past with Ddot, especially in front of her friends, was making her uncomfortable.
Ddot leaned forward, his tone serious. "Ain't no unfinished business. Helen's with Javon now. We just friends."
Helen nodded. "Exactly."
David smirked but didn't push it further. "Aight, if y'all say so."
Helen shook off the weird tension and turned to Kylie. "Come dance with me."
Kylie grabbed her hand, and the two went to the dance floor, letting the music take over. Helen needed to forget about the conversation, even if just for a little while.
But she could still feel Ddot's eyes on her. And for some reason, a small part of her didn't mind.
As Helen swayed to the music with Kylie, she felt a familiar gaze on her. She tried to ignore it, but the tension was undeniable.
Back at the table, everyone had noticed too.
"Yo, Ddot, you good?" Malachi smirked, nudging him.
"Man, you staring hard as hell," Sophie added, sipping her drink.
Ddot snapped out of it, shaking his head. "Nah, I'm just-just thinking."
David laughed. "Thinking? Man, you damn near burning a hole through her dress."
Javon, who had been quiet for most of the night, clenched his jaw as he watched the interaction. Helen was having fun, completely unaware of the storm brewing back at the table.
Kylie leaned into Helen's ear. "Girl, Ddot is straight up locked in on you. Javon looks ready to swing."
Helen rolled her eyes, flipping her hair over her shoulder. "I don't care. I'm just here to have fun."
But when she turned around and caught Ddot's stare directly, something in her chest tightened. He wasn't just looking-he was remembering. And for a second, she felt it too.
Javon saw the moment they locked eyes, and that was enough. He slammed his drink down and stood up, walking toward them.
"We leaving," he said firmly, grabbing Helen's wrist.
Helen yanked her arm back. "Excuse me?"
Ddot stood up now, too. "Yo, chill out, bro. She ain't gotta go nowhere."
Javon turned to him, his eyes dark. "Why you even care?"
The tension was thick. Everyone at the table watched, waiting to see what would happen next.
Helen yanked her wrist away from Javon's grip, her eyes blazing.
"Javon, you don't tell me when to leave. I decide that."
Ddot stepped closer, tilting his head slightly. "Yeah, bro. Why you acting all possessive? She ain't some trophy you can drag around."
Javon clenched his fists, his jaw tight. "Ain't nobody being possessive. But I see the way you looking at her. And I know why."
The room fell silent.
David chuckled under his breath. "Man, I already spilled the tea earlier, might as well pour the rest." He looked at Helen and smirked. "Javon knows about you and Ddot's little kiss."
Helen's stomach dropped. She glanced at Javon, then at Ddot, who was watching her carefully.
"Javon-" she started, but he cut her off.
"So it's true?" His voice was low, controlled, but his eyes burned with something deeper.
Helen sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Yes, but that was before we got together. Before everything happened. You know that."
Javon shook his head, laughing bitterly. "Yeah, but you never told me. And now you two acting all... close again."
Ddot smirked. "Ain't nobody acting, bro. We've been close. You just never liked it."
That set Javon off. He lunged at Ddot, but Malachi and David jumped up, holding him back before a full-on fight could break out.
"Enough!" Helen snapped, stepping between them. "This is ridiculous. Javon, I love you. But I'm not doing this jealous, insecure bullshit. Ddot is my friend. Period."
Javon exhaled sharply, his chest rising and falling. Ddot stayed quiet, his expression unreadable.
Sophie cleared her throat. "Sooo... are we still partying, or are we just gonna let this turn into a boxing match?"
Helen rolled her eyes and grabbed Javon's hand, pulling him aside. "We need to talk. Alone."
As they walked off, Ddot watched them, his face unreadable. But one thing was clear-this wasn't over.
Helen sat on the edge of the bed, arms crossed as she stared at Javon. He stood in front of her, frustration clear on his face.
"Javon, I need you to understand this isn't about Ddot. This is about you not trusting me."
Javon scoffed. "Not trusting you? Helen, you didn't even tell me about that kiss. What else have you kept from me?"
Helen exhaled sharply, shaking her head. "It was one kiss, before we were even together! And you're acting like I betrayed you. I've been nothing but loyal to you, but I can't keep dealing with this jealousy every time another guy is around me."
Javon ran a hand over his face. **"You expect me to just be cool with you and him being all close again? Like it don't mean nothing?"
Helen stood up, her voice shaking with frustration. "Yes, Javon, because it doesn't mean anything! Ddot is my friend, just like he's always been. But you... you're making this into something it's not, and I'm tired of it."
Javon clenched his jaw. "So, what? You're choosing him over me?"
Helen let out a bitter laugh. "I'm choosing peace, Javon. I'm choosing myself. I can't keep fighting you over stuff that doesn't even matter."
Javon's expression darkened, his voice lowering. "So, what are you saying, Helen?"
She took a deep breath, looking him in the eyes. "I'm saying we're done."
The room fell silent. Javon stared at her, disbelief written all over his face. "You don't mean that."
Helen swallowed the lump in her throat, forcing herself to stay strong. "I do."
Javon shook his head, stepping back. "Wow. Just like that."
Helen didn't say anything. She turned away, walking toward her bed. She couldn't look at him anymore, not when her heart was already breaking.
Javon exhaled sharply. "Fine." He turned and walked toward the door, pausing for a moment like he was waiting for her to stop him.
But she didn't.
The door shut behind him, and as soon as he was gone, Helen collapsed onto the bed, hugging her pillow as silent tears slipped down her cheeks.
Helen sighed as she carried Ethan inside, slightly annoyed but not surprised. Her friends were all sprawled out on the couch, deep into a movie, popcorn bowls scattered everywhere.
Sophie was the first to notice her. She turned her head, mouth full of popcorn. "Oh hey, Helen! Took you long enough."
Helen raised an eyebrow, setting Ethan down on the floor as he crawled toward Kali. "Took me long enough? Y'all really started a movie marathon without me?"
Ariana shrugged, scooting over to make space for her. "Well, you've been MIA lately, and we figured you needed space."
Helen rolled her eyes and flopped down next to Kylie, who handed her a blanket. "I needed space, not for y'all to act like I don't exist."
Malachi smirked. "Girl, please. You've been all in your feelings ever since you and Javon broke up. You barely text, you barely call, and when we ask you to come out, you're always 'busy.'"
Helen sucked her teeth. "That's not even true."
Danielle shot her a look. "Really? When's the last time you hung out with us just to chill?"
Helen opened her mouth, then shut it. Damn.
Ariana smirked. "Exactly."
Helen sighed, grabbing a handful of popcorn. "Fine, whatever. But next time, at least invite me before y'all start watching stuff."
Kylee grinned. "Then sit your ass down and watch. We're in the middle of a horror movie, and it's getting good."
Helen snuggled into the couch, finally relaxing. Maybe this was what she needed-to just be with her friends, away from all the drama.

As the movie played, Helen sat cross-legged on the floor with Kylie, both of them completely focused on Ethan, who was giggling as he tried to grab Helen's fingers. She wiggled them in front of him, making silly faces while Kylie clapped her hands to keep him entertained.
"You got this, Ethan! Come on, throw a punch!" Kylie teased, laughing as Ethan threw his tiny fists in the air.
Helen grinned, grabbing his little hands. "You tryna be like your daddy, huh? Or maybe like your uncle Malachi?" she joked, making Ethan coo in response.
Meanwhile, Ddot sat on the couch, barely paying attention to the movie. His eyes were locked on Helen-the way her face lit up when she laughed, the way she cradled Ethan so naturally, the way she didn't even realize how beautiful she looked in the simplest moments.
David nudged him slightly, whispering, "Yo, you keep staring, she gon' notice."
Ddot blinked, shaking himself out of his thoughts. "Nah, chill. I ain't staring."
David smirked, leaning back. "Yeah, okay. Keep telling yourself that."
But Helen was too distracted to notice. She was lost in her own world, playing with Ethan and soaking in the rare moment of peace. If only she knew how much Ddot was really thinking about her.
Unspoken Tension
The next day, Helen woke up feeling unusually drained. She had spent the night replaying everything in her mind-her breakup with Javon, Ddot's lingering stares, and the weight of everything she had been through.
She stretched, rubbing her eyes as she heard giggles from downstairs. Throwing on a hoodie, she made her way to the living room, where Ethan was sitting on the floor, clapping his hands as Kali danced in front of him. Malachi was on the couch, scrolling through his phone, while Sophie and Kylie were arguing over what music to put on.
Ddot was there too-leaning against the kitchen counter, watching the chaos unfold. His gaze shifted when he saw Helen walk in.
"Look who finally decided to wake up," Malachi teased, glancing up from his phone.
Helen rolled her eyes, plopping down on the couch. "Whatever. Y'all didn't even wake me up."
Kylie smirked. "You looked peaceful. Plus, we figured you needed the sleep after last night."
Helen sighed, knowing what she meant. Last night, after everyone left, she had sat alone in her room, trying to process everything.
Ddot walked over and sat next to her. "You good?" he asked, his voice quieter than usual.
Helen glanced at him, then at everyone else in the room. She didn't want to get into it, not with an audience. "I'm fine," she muttered, but Ddot wasn't convinced.
David, who had just walked in, smirked. "Yeah, she 'fine'-until she starts overthinking everything again."
Helen shot him a look, and he held up his hands in surrender. "I'm just saying!"
Before she could respond, Ethan crawled into her lap, distracting her. She smiled, kissing his cheek before looking back at Ddot.
"Can we talk?" she finally said, standing up.
Ddot nodded, following her outside to the backyard. The air was cool, and the sky was painted in soft shades of pink and orange. They stood there for a moment, neither of them speaking.
Helen took a deep breath. "You keep looking at me like you wanna say something. So say it."
Ddot exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. "I just-everything between us...it's been weird since you left."
Helen looked away. "I had to go. You know that."
"Yeah, but you ain't ever really talk about it. You just dipped. And now you back, and everything feels...unfinished."
Helen crossed her arms, not sure what to say. She had never really processed leaving Ddot behind-how much it must've hurt him, too.
"I don't know what you want me to say," she admitted. "Life happened. I lost people. I had Ethan. And now..."
Ddot stepped closer. "And now?"
She swallowed hard, feeling the tension in the air. "I don't know."
For the first time in a long time, she felt stuck between her past and her future. And she had no idea which one she was supposed to hold onto.
As Helen stood there, still lost in thought, the front door opened, and Javon walked in. The usual tension that lingered between them since the breakup wasn't as heavy this time-he actually looked... calm.
"Hey," Javon said, his tone neutral as he glanced around before his eyes landed on Ethan, who was still playing with Kali.
Helen nodded in acknowledgment. "Hey."
She turned, grabbing Ethan's bag from the couch before walking over to pick him up. Ethan clung to her for a moment before she gently kissed his forehead. "Be good for your dad, okay?"
Ethan babbled something in response, making both Helen and Javon chuckle softly.
Ddot stood in the background, watching the interaction closely, but he kept his expression unreadable.
Helen handed Ethan over to Javon, who took him carefully in his arms. "Thanks," he said, eyeing her as if waiting for any kind of reaction.
Surprisingly, she was in a good mood. Maybe it was the talk with Ddot, or maybe she was just tired of holding onto so much negativity. Either way, she just shrugged. "No problem."
Javon looked at her for a moment longer before nodding. "I'll bring him back later."
Helen simply waved as he left, closing the door behind him. As soon as he was gone, she turned back to see her friends staring at her, especially Ddot.
"What?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
Malachi smirked. "You ain't even roll your eyes at him once. Who are you, and what have you done with Helen?"
Helen laughed, shaking her head. "Maybe I'm just growing up."
Ddot, still quiet, tilted his head slightly before saying, "Or maybe you just letting go of things that don't matter anymore."
Helen met his gaze, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. Maybe he was right. Maybe, for the first time in a while, she was finally ready to move forward.
Helen rolled her eyes at Ddot's comment, shaking her head. "Boy, please."
Malachi, Sophie, and Kylie immediately burst into laughter, making the moment even funnier.
"Oh, she back," Malachi joked, clutching his stomach. "For a second, I thought we lost her!"
Sophie wiped away fake tears. "I was scared! I thought she was gonna start talking about healing and letting go of negativity."
Kylie giggled. "Right, next thing you know, she's burning sage and meditating."
Helen shook her head, laughing despite herself. "Y'all are so annoying."
Ddot smirked. "I'm just saying, you didn't even argue with him. That's growth, right?"
Helen pointed at him. "I ain't growing that much."
Everyone laughed again, the mood feeling light for the first time in a while. It felt good-just being surrounded by her friends, joking around like nothing had changed. Even if everything had.
