Childhood
15:45, 8 June 2021Hendricks (Leo) Pov:
I get out of my car and slowly walk into the tall building, dreading the events to come ahead. Once arriving I walk up to their door and raise my hand to knock. Before my hand even reaches the hard wood door Isla swings it open. She steps to the side and signals for me to enter.
A nervous feeling bubbles in the pit of my stomach as I take collected steps into their apartment. I hear the door softly close behind me and faint footsteps following me to the kitchen.
"So mind telling me what this letter is all about?" Isla asks as she spins the letter on the table so I can see the writing. I silently take the letter and read it in my head.
'Hope you enjoyed your little trip down memory lane. I hear visiting parents is quite an emotional toll, especially brining a new boyfriend home. Tell me...did they approve of good ole Derek Morgan? How bout my dearest brother Leo?
Enough with the small talk, this letter is becoming to feel a bit one sided don't you think?
I wanted to inform you that your little trip with your mates would be your last 'win' as Derek likes to call it. From here on out I will be your main priority, I will be your worry.
There is no more winning for you. I will get what I was deprived of, what you and my pillock of a brother remind me of. I will make you and him suffer for the pain it has inflicted upon me, and if you dare try to deprive me of my right, I will not hesitate to take away your so called family.
I have eyes on them constantly. I must say that little boy of your boss, what's his name...Jack?Jacks growing up quite fast, wouldn't want him to grow up without a father now would we.
Give my best to Derek now would you luv? I have a feeling we'll be seeing each other soon.
Ta-Ta,Joshua'
I put the letter down and rub my closed eyes with my hand, cursing under my breath.
"Well?" Morgan asks as he leans on the refrigerator looking at me.
"You've never met him, not directly I mean." I state broadly.
"Than how have I 'deprived' him?" She asks using the same words he did.
"During the summers of our Academy years I returned to London. I stayed with my mother and brother for vacation until I had to return to America for the Police Academy." I start. Isla nods her head and pushes her hair back.
"Yeah, you've told me this before." She mumbles.
"What I didn't tell you is how fond I was of you." I whisper. Morgan stiffens slightly before I continue.
"Not only as someone I fancied but also as a friend. So I talked about you. At breakfast, lunch, dinner. Really at any moment I could." I say, chucking slightly.
(FLASHBACK)
"Oh mum you would love her." I gush to my mother as I put the dishes away in the cupboards. A scoff sounds behind me as I look to see my younger brother lean on the table.
"Must you always talk about this American girl." He states annoyed. I roll my eyes and turn around holding my towel in my hands.
"She's much more than an American girl Joshua. How'd you know, you can't even get a girl." I tease him. He scowls and looks to mum.
"Tell him to quit it mum." He complains. My mother turns around and places a hand to her hip.
"Instead of complaining about your brother, why don't you do something worth for you to complain about. Leo goes all the way to America, be more like him." My mother's stern voice tells him angrily. Joshua stands up taller and bites his inner cheek.
"He's not so perfect mum. He's a twat! He goes to America to be with some girl, not work!" My brother exclaims.
"Enough! Leo works hard, what have you done to support this family Joshua?!" She yells at him. I scratch my neck guilty looking at the scene unfold.
He is only 15 years old, he should not have to support this family.
"Mum, he's just messin around. He didn't mean it." I try to sooth but my mother insists.
"No Leo, the boy must learn." My mother utters before grabbing his ear and tugging him to his room. "A boy with no respect, is a boy of disgrace." She says with venom in his voice. My brother flinches and tries to get a hold of his ear.
(END OF FLASHBACK)
"Joshua always acted out, but he didn't deserve the punishments he was given. When I was younger I didn't understand how my words or actions could harm those around me." I explain.
"He was always seen as in your shadow. He was deprived of individuality." Isla whispers piecing together what his words in the message meant.
"But why would he hold a grudge on you? They were only stories." Morgan questions.
"Maybe in his mind he saw it as Leo winning. Him and I were able to be ourselves, something he couldn't do because he was constantly being compared to his older brother." Isla explains. I nod slowly before letting out a breath.
"After I became a cop thats when he really started to act out. Got involved with the wrong crowds. Started up drugs, gangs, than leading into the mafia." I sigh.
"But didn't you say he was a nobody, not someone as powerful as he lead on?" Morgan asks.
"I mean he was. He just wanted to rebel away from my mum. He never did anything too bad, until well you know..." I trail off, hinting to more recent events.
"So he wants revenge? How could he do that really. Kill you two, what would that solve for him?" Morgan thinks aloud trying to find Joshua's end goal.
"There isn't one. He's fixated on something that wouldn't make him feel any better. Just damning the rest of his life." Isla mumbles.
"That's why we need to catch him before he does something he regrets." I state. Morgan nods before rubbing his face. Isla looks up at him and rubs his back.
"How bout you go to bed, and we talk about this in the morning." Isla questions Morgan.
"Babygirl it's already 4am." He reminds her.
"We just got back from a case a little over an hour ago. You're tired." She tells him. He nods slowly before leaning down and kissing her on the lips.
I watch as he smiles softly into the kiss, and his arms incircle around her waist. He breaks the kiss slowly before smirking down at her. She bites her lip fighting a small smile before pecking his lips. Morgan whispers a good night to her before slapping her bum lightly. I can't deny that there's a small part inside me that quenches. Seeing her with another man makes me reminisce in what we had. But what we had couldn't be, to her it wasn't meant to be.
Derek looks up at me then slapping my shoulder softly before retreating into the bedroom. Isla sighs and sits on the chair, causing me to do the same.
"Do you ever have a feeling that someone above just hates you?" Isla asks me. I frown and pat her hand.
"Impossible. No one can possibly hate you luv." I tell her with a smirk. She rolls her eyes before laughing.
"Tell that to your brother." She jokes, but I find no humor in it. Once she sees my serious face she clicks her tongue on he roof of her mouth.
"Oh come on, that was funny." She urges as she shoves my shoulder slightly. "Are you telling me that Leo Hendrick Foster is giving up on the chance of a good laugh?" She teases.
"Isla quit it. This is serious." I warn her.
"I know that Leo. Can't a girl try to make something shitty a little bit better?" She asks annoyed.
"You don't understand. He is my brother. Something happens to you or your team it's my fault." I remind her.
"You were always one for the dramatics." She jokes.
"You have no idea what's happening here, do you?" I ask her causing her to stiffen and her smile to drop.
"Of course I do Leo. Just for once in my life I'd like for something NOT to go to shit." She snarls angrily. "I'm trying to be positive about something that could possibly ruin me. So sorry for trying to let it not get to me." She says getting up.
"Isla I know it's getting to you. You forget that I'm your best friend luv." I tell her getting up too. She shakes her head trying to calm herself down from her small outburst. I grab her wrist making her look up at me.
"I know you better than you know yourself. I know you're scared to the core. I know that you've started old habits. Just admit it's my fault. Do us both the favor." I tell her. She snatches her hand from my grip and bites her lip.
"Shut up Leo." She says walking away from me.
"Just say it. It's simple really luv." I urge.
"Leo, if you don't stop this I-"
"You'll what? Just admit what your thinking, and I'll drop it." I start again.
"Leave." She mutters. I furrow my brows and stand up straighter.
"Pardon?" I ask bearing her the first time.
"I said. Leave." She utters more dangerously. Once she sees that I don't budge she starts walking towards me and pushes me to the front of the apartment.
"Not admitting the truth. Really now Isla? After all these years you still can't tell the full truth." I say angrily. The second the words leave my mouth I regret it, but I show no guilt towards what I say becuase my annoyance tops my guilt.
"No, I'm the one who's telling the truth, Leo. It's you who is fixated on blaming, not me. So when I'm telling you to leave it's not because I blame you, it's because I can't bare to see you right now. I can't bare to see anyone." She admits.
"Just don't call me for a while. I need the space, and unfortunately I can't do that to the ones I work with." She tells me.
"Oh but you can with me?" I ask annoyed.
"Yes." Is all she says before closing the door. I lick my lips and stand there looking at the door, feeling incomplete and wanting her to yell.
To yell as hard as she can telling me that I ruined her life. I tainted her well deserved happy ending that she craved all her life. Instead I stand behind a door with her on the other side, not knowing what the future holds. And what it's events will cause on our long lasting friendship.
