The Night of Sorrows

06:11, 6 October 2025

Will burst through the front door, rain still dripping from his hair and clothes. His chest heaved, mind racing with everything that had just happened, the fight, the confession, the group listening, the panic.

They all know I'm a fag. They probably all hate me now.

He didn't even hear Jonathan come into the room until a quiet voice stopped him, "Will...hey, you okay?"

Will flinched but didn't answer right away. He dropped his backpack by the door and sat on the couch, staring blankly at the floor.

Jonathan moved closer, sitting beside him cautiously, "I've noticed you've been kinda down recently...and when you talk about Mike...it sounds like some stuff is going on...?"

Will looked up, voice trembling but steady, "There's something I need to tell you. Something I've been too afraid to say."

Jonathan nodded gently, encouraging him, "Whenever you're ready."

Taking a deep breath, Will let the words spill out, raw, honest, and free for the first time, "I like Mike. Like, more than just a friend. And...I'm gay."

Jonathan's expression softened, and he pulled Will into a careful hug, "Thank you for trusting me. I honestly kind of had a feeling since you've never really had interest in girls or anything. I hope you know that doesn't change a thing between us. You're my brother, and I love you."

Will let the tears fall, feeling the weight lift off his chest, just a little, "Thanks, Jonathan. I really needed that."

For the first time in a long time, Will felt a flicker of hope.

It was later that night and the house was quiet except for the soft ticking of a clock. Mike sat on his bed, phone trembling in his hands, heart pounding with a mix of hope and dread. He dialed Will's house's landline number again, hoping he would pick up.

The line rang, and rang...until a calm but tired voice answered.

"Hello?" It was Jonathan, Will's older brother, dammit.

Mike's breath hitched, "Jonathan? Is Will available to talk?"

Jonathan's voice was gentle but guarded, "No, Mike. He went to bed early. He's not really in the mood to talk tonight."

Mike swallowed hard, pain settling in his chest, "I just...I need to talk to him. I don't want to lose him."

Jonathan sighed softly, "I know, man. Will's hurting...he's scared and confused. And struggling to understand himself. It's not easy for him right now."

Mike's voice cracked, desperate, "Please, Jonathan. Tell him I'm sorry. Tell him I love him. I'm not going anywhere."

There was a long pause, "I will," Jonathan promised quietly.

Mike ended the call, clutching the phone like it was his only lifeline, tears slipping silently down his face in the dark.

I'm not giving up, not ever again...
