Sanemi Pov:

The next morning.

I still can't believe it. My coach actually wants me to compete as a pair with this conceited wannabe. We had about two months until the day of the competition.

A little less time than I would have liked. In this sport, two months of preparation is normal, but competing as a pair was something new. And then with him, of all people. One thing was clear to me: having to work and train with him would be the pure hell on earth.

Today was the first day of this torture. Our coaches had agreed to start training the very next day. "The sooner, the better," they had said. What bullshit. Having to compete as a pair with such a self-absorbed asshole like Tomioka would end in disaster either way.

As if he could even do something like competing as a pair. A grin formed on my face. I bet he's pretty pissed off now that he can't be alone in the spotlight anymore.

I made my way to the ice rink early. I looked at the clock: 7:54 a.m. Perfect! We had scheduled the start of practice for 8:30 a.m. So I had enough time to do some training myself and enjoy my day before Tomioka showed up.

Giyuu POV:

The blades of my skates scratched fine lines into the ice as I made my laps. I heard my coach's voice call out, somewhat annoyed. "Don't just twiddle your thumbs. We're not just here for fun. Yesterday's spin, and this time, pay attention to your balance!"

I looked at him. He was standing at the edge of the ice rink. He had his arms crossed. He was visibly annoyed and impatient. "Well, it'll be soon!" he shouted, annoyed. I nodded and started to speed up to generate momentum for the jump.

I prepared for the jump. The world around me blurred before my eyes as I jumped high and spun in the air. I landed back on the ice but couldn't keep my balance and fell. I breathed through my teeth as I slowly stood up again.

I grabbed my elbow. I had landed on it when I fell. It hurt like hell. "Come on! Again! We'll practice this until you can do it perfectly, do you understand?" my coach called from the side. Sometimes, he could be really strict.

I tried again, and again, and again...

I hit the hard ice again. Again. Why can't I do it? I've practised this jump thousands of times, and each time, I feel like I'm getting worse.

I wonder why my coach hasn't given up already. Time and again, the people around me see me fail. Every mistake. I don't want to go on like this forever. I... I don't want to fail again, and yet I'm doing it right now. Again... again and again.

I slowly got out of breath. I was circling around after another failed attempt when I heard the door to the ice hall open. I looked over and saw Shinazugawa.

What was he doing here? Our practice wasn't going to start for another 30 minutes. Maybe he had come to do some training himself first. He looked surprised at first, then annoyed.

"Ah, Shinazugawa, I'm coming here to do some training first," I heard my coach say. Shinazugawa looked at him and nodded. "Good," my coach said, turning to me. "Tomioka, come here. We're taking a break."

I nodded and left the ice. I passed Shinazugawa, who walked over to a bench to put on his skates. My coach walked over to me and handed me a bottle of water. "Drink this."

I nodded and mumbled a quick thank you. I unscrewed the cap and took a sip. "Okay, finish drinking it, take a short break, and then we'll start your and Shinazugawa's training," my coach said.

I nodded and sat down on one of the benches. I finished my bottle and looked over at Shinazugawa, who was practising on the ice. It seemed like he belonged there. He seemed to be able to cover up even his mistakes.

I couldn't help but wonder what would happen when we're starting the training.
