"We want you to compete together as a pair in the next competition..."

I froze for a moment. They wanted us to do what? Me and Shinazugawa together as a pair?

"What?" Shinazugawa asked, looking just as stunned as I was, until his stunnedness turned into annoyance.

"Under no circumstances will I work with that braggart, let alone compete as a pair in a competition," he spat, giving me a disparaging look.

"Sanemi, I understand you have your problems, but—" Shinazugawa's coach began, but was interrupted by him.

"He's an arrogant asshole," Sanemi snapped. My coach, Katsu, crossed his arms and annoyedly gritted his teeth.

A while passed, and Shinazugawa's coach continued to try to talk to him and get him to compete with me as a pair.

Meanwhile, I had sat down on one of the benches to rest a bit after the intense training.

Suddenly, I heard someone calling my name. I turned around and saw my coach.

"Here," he said in an indifferent, almost annoyed tone, and pressed a bottle into my hand as if it were a tool and not a favour.

"You look pathetic. Drink before you fall over. After that, I expect you to function again."

I nodded slightly. "Come on, drink and hurry up," he snapped. I opened the bottle of water and took a sip.

After I had drunk about half the bottle, my coach rushed me back onto the ice. "And don't screw up that jump this time. I won't tolerate any sloppiness from you."

I glanced briefly at the edge of the rink where Shinazugawa was still arguing with his coach.

Then I heard my coach's whistle blow and began my training routine. But I couldn't help but wonder what would happen next.

Shinazugawa didn't seem to want to compete with me under any circumstances, but it seemed as if our coaches had already decided that we would...
