Part 108
19:00, 16 May 2026The soft, rhythmic touch of fingers brushing through his hair was what pulled Noel from his deep sleep. He blinked against the bright morning light, his muscles incredibly stiff from spending the night crumpled in the narrow hospital chair.
He looked up. Caro was watching him, her eyes clear and filled with a soft, quiet warmth that he hadn't seen in weeks. She wasn't healed, the physical and emotional toll was still visible in the pale hollows of her cheeks and the faint tremor in her hands, but she was trying. She gave him a fragile smile, her thumb lightly tracing his jawline.
'Hey,' she whispered, her voice soft but steady. 'You..stayed.'
'I told you I would,' Noel murmured, his voice thick with sleep. He shifted closer, taking her hand and carefully examining her face. 'How are you feeling? The withdrawal...is it bearable?'
Caro swallowed hard, looking down at their joined hands. 'My skin feels..like it's crawling, and my head..is pounding..but it's..not like before. The panic..isn't suffocating me. I can breathe, Noel..Because you're..here.'
The profound relief of having her back, safe and breathing, rushed through him. He reached up, his hand gently cupping the back of her neck, his thumb caressing her jaw. He leaned in close, his heart hammering against his ribs, wanting nothing more than to press his lips against hers and seal the promise he had made her in the dark. Caro tilted her chin up, closing her eyes as she leaned into his touch, seeking his warmth.
Click.
The heavy wood door abruptly swung open, shattering the quiet intimacy of the moment.
Noel froze, his lips just inches from Caro's, as Liam strode into the room. His timing as disruptive as ever. In one hand, he held two cardboard cups of black coffee; under his other arm, he carried a thick stack of the morning tabloids.
Liam stopped short, looking between Noel's irritated glare and Caro's flushing cheeks.
'Alright?' Liam muttered, completely ignoring his brother's murderous expression as he walked over to the bedside table. 'Didn't mean to burst your bubble, but the world's moving outside.'
He set the coffees down and tossed the thick stack of newspapers beside them, intentionally spreading them across the small table so the massive, predatory lettering faced the bed. The thud of the paper on the wood was quiet, but the headlines targeted at Rob's cruelty were deafening.
The top paper bore a massive, stark headline: EXPOSED: THE COERCION PLOT THAT BROKE CAROLINE. Right below, another tabloid screamed in bold, sensationalized red lettering: SICK EXTORTION: HOW HER BEST FRIEND DRUGGED AND EXTORTED CAROLINE WHILE NOEL WAS ON STAGE.
Liam flipped the next few pages open, revealing how deep Noel's lawyers had dug into the details. One front page featured a grim, grainy photo of Rob under the caption: THE MONSTER IN THE FAMILY: INSIDE THE PSYCHOLOGICAL TERROR AND THREATS THAT SILENCED CARO. Another headline exposed the full weight of the intimidation: TRAUMATIZED AND THREATENED: HOW BEST FRIEND USED NOEL'S KIDS TO FORCE CARO INTO SUBMISSION. Another smaller column read: CO-CONSPIRATOR EXPOSED: SARA FACES CRIMINAL CHARGES FOR EXPLOITING NOEL'S CHILDREN IN SAVAGE FAMILY PLOT. The final tabloid ran a brutal, multi-page spread detailing the dark loop of coercion: EXPLOITED IN THE SHADOWS: CARO'S HOSPITAL AGONY: SAVAGELY BLACKMAILED BY HER BEST FRIEND & NOEL'S EX-WIFE!
Every piece of filth, every threat against the children, and every disgusting detail of the emotional and physical warfare Rob had inflicted on her had been laid bare for the public. The trap was sprung, and the exit doors were nowhere to be found.
Caro stared at the sea of headlines detailing her own trauma. For a terrifying second, Noel held his breath, waiting for the panic or the crushing shame to claw its way back into her chest. But as Caro read the words, as she saw the monster who had paralyzed her finally stripped of his power and exposed to the world, a long, trembling breath escaped her lips. Her shoulders dropped. The raw, public vindication on the pages proved that the power he had over her had finally been shattered into pieces.
'See?' Liam said, stepping closer to the bed and giving the newspapers a definitive slap with the back of his hand. His voice was low, carrying a rare, protective weight that completely bypassed his usual bravado. 'He's done, Caro. The bastard is never coming back. You're safe.'
Caro's gaze remained locked on the papers. A single, heavy tear escaped her eye, tracing a path down her pale cheek, but she didn't look away in shame this time. Her fingers tightened around Noel's hand, gripping him with a sudden, grounding strength. The headlines were brutal, exposing her deepest agony to millions, but seeing the truth printed in black and white didn't break her. It freed her. The invisible cage Rob and Sara had built around her had just been torn down by the public eye.
Noel let out the breath he had been holding, his shoulders dropping as he realized the panic wasn't coming back. He leaned over, his lips brushing against her temple, breathing in her familiar scent.
Then he slowly turned his head, fixing Liam with a look of pure, unadulterated irritation.
'Your timing,' Noel muttered, his voice a gravelly morning rasp, 'is fucking legendary, Liam. Two seconds. I needed two bloody seconds.'
Liam smirked, pulling one of the plastic lids off a coffee cup and taking a slow sip. He completely shrugged off the glare, though a glimmer of relief danced in his eyes as he looked at the two of them.
'The world doesn't wait for you to play the romantic lead, Noel,' Liam countered, his swagger slipping back into place as he pulled up a chair. 'Besides, your lawyer's been ringing my phone off the hook because you turned yours off. The press are already swarming the main gates downstairs. We need a plan before they figure out which window to point their cameras at.'
Noel wiped a hand over his face, the reality of the media storm crashing into the quiet sanctuary of the room. He looked at Caro, checking her expression. She looked exhausted, her skin still clammy from the withdrawal, but the haunted look in her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, resilient focus.
'Can I see the..children?' she asked, her voice cracking slightly but direct. She looked between the two brothers, her jaw setting. 'Maybe I can get out..of here? Even if it's just..for a few hours?'
Noel's expression tightened. He looked down at their joined hands, then met her gaze, his voice firm but quiet.
'I don't think you're ready yet, Caro,' Noel bit his lip. He squeezed her hand, preventing any argument before it could start. 'I mean you're still shaking. The withdrawal is still there, and the press outside is a total circus. You try walking out those doors right now, and they will chew you up.'
Caro frowned, opening her mouth to protest, but Noel cut her off gently, leaning in closer.
'I'm not risking it,' he insisted, his eyes dead serious. 'The doctors need to clear you first. I promise you, the minute you are stable enough, I'll bring them straight to this room. But right now, you stay put and you rest. End of story.'
Liam watched them from his chair, nodding along as he took another sip of his coffee. 'He's right, Caro. It's a fucking madhouse downstairs. Let us handle the noise first.'
Caro didn't look happy about it, her brow furrowing as she glared down at the white hospital sheets, but she didn't have the energy to fight him. Her shoulders slumped slightly, the physical exhaustion of the detox forcing her back against the pillows.
Noel watched the disappointment cloud her face, and his chest tightened. He couldn't let her leave this room, but he refused to let her sit here feeling isolated and trapped by her own recovery. Before she could sink any further into the pillows, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
The screen lit up aggressively with dozens of unread media alerts, but he swiped them away instantly, navigating straight to WhatsApp.
'Since you can't go to them just yet,' Noel said softly, a rare, genuine smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as he held the phone up in front of her, 'we'll just have to bring them to you'.
Caro blinked, her breath catching as the phone began to ring. On the second ring, the call connected, and the screen flashed to life with the bright, chaotic faces of the kids crowding the camera.
'Dad! Look what we made!' Sonny shouted, completely oblivious to the war that had just been fought to protect them. Then, their eyes shifted to the edge of the frame. 'Wait..is that Caro? Caro!!!'
A sharp, fractured sob escaped Caro's lips, her free hand flying to her mouth as she stared at the glowing screen. Hearing their voices, seeing their big, untroubled smiles completely untouched by Rob and Sara's venom, was the most profound wave of relief she had felt since this entire nightmare began.
Noel adjusted his grip, wrapping his fingers more tightly around hers, and angled the camera so they were both leaning in together.
'Hey, you lot,' Noel said, his voice thick with emotion but incredibly steady. 'Say good morning to Caro. She's been missing you.'
'Caro?!' Sonny's face completely filled the screen, his cheeks flushed and his eyes dancing with pure excitement. 'Did you hear Dad's show last night? It was so loud! And I scored a massive goal at football! It flew right into the top corner!'
Caro swallowed hard against the tight lump in her throat, forcing her trembling lips into a weak but deeply affectionate smile. 'That's amazing, Sonny,' she whispered, her voice still raspy and fragile. 'And yes..I heard..your Dad and..Uncle Liam.'
Before Sonny could fire off another eager question, the phone suddenly wobbled and tilted violently. A mop of messy blonde curls and a fiercely determined little face forced its way with absolute authority right into the center of the screen, ruthlessly shoving her brothers out of the frame.
'My turn!' Bowie squeaked, her tiny elbows working overtime as she squeezed herself into the gap. The little girl planted her nose right up against the camera lens, her eyes lighting up like stars the absolute second she spotted the screen. 'Caro! Caro, look! I'm wearing the fuzzy pink socks with the little sheep you gave me! See? Look at my toes!'
She tried to hoist her little foot up into the camera view, wobbling precariously and nearly toppling backward over a couch cushion, while her brothers groaned loudly in the background.
'I miss you so much,' Bowie babbled happily, her voice suddenly dropping into that sweet, whispered tone she only used when she was being fiercely loving. 'I saved the fluffiest pink pillow just for your head. You have to come home soon, okay? I love you soooooo much.'
That was the exact moment the last of Caro's restraint completely crumbled. Hearing that innocent, unconditional love, seeing Bowie so entirely safe, so wonderfully vibrant, and completely shielded from the dark nightmare that had almost torn their lives apart, was too much for her heart to hold. A soft, broken sob caught in Caro's throat. She pulled her hand away from Noel's grip, burying her face into her palms as the tears came rushing out, her shoulders trembling violently against the hospital pillows.
Noel's heart skipped a beat. He immediately shifted his weight, wrapping one heavy, protective arm securely around her shaking shoulders, pulling her side tight against his chest to anchor her. He held the phone steady with his other hand, keeping the camera angled just right.
'Stop squishing the phone, Bowie,' Donovan complained, rolling his eyes right into the camera lens with the dramatic flair only a pre-teen boy could muster. 'You're getting your hair all over the screen.' He shifted the phone back to a wider angle, showing Sonny trying to reclaim his spot while Bowie aggressively stuck her tongue out at him. 'Dad, is she okay?' Donovan seemed worried.
Caro couldn't answer. The sheer beauty of their normal, chaotic sibling bickering, so loud, so wonderfully mundane, and so profoundly safe, vibrated right through the phone's speakers. She kept her face buried in her palms, her body trembling against Noel's side as the weeks and months of tightly coiled terror, chemical sickness, and heavy secrets finally wept themselves out of her system.
Noel held her tighter, his fingers digging into the fabric of his own damp jacket over her shoulders. He could feel every ragged breath she took, every shuddering sob, and it tore at him, but he knew this was the breakdown before the breakthrough.
He looked down into the glowing screen, his voice thick but carrying that absolute, unshakeable authority that kept his kids grounded.
'She's getting better, Don,' Noel said softly, his voice steadying to reassure the kids. He squeezed his arm around Caro, keeping her anchored against his chest. 'She misses you, that's all.'
Sonny and Donovan nodded, their chaotic energy softening into a quiet understanding. Bowie peeked out from behind Donovan's shoulder, her big eyes still filled with concern.
'But listen to me, you lot,' Noel continued, his tone shifting into his firm dad-voice. 'Caro still needs to get some proper rest today. I'm going to stay right here with her, and I'll call you back later this afternoon, alright?'
The children groaned in unison, but Noel cut them off with a rare smile.
'Ok..Love you, Daddy! Bye, Caro!' Bowie squeaked, throwing a chaotic kiss at the camera before the screen went black.
Noel stayed exactly like that, keeping his heavy arm wrapped securely around her shoulders until the violent trembling in her frame began to ease. He didn't push for answers, and he didn't bring up the court case or the press outside. He just held her close, letting the steady beat of his heart against her cheek do the talking.
He leaned down and pressed his lips firmly against her wet temple again, just keeping his face close to hers so she could feel his absolute presence. He could feel the exact moment the tension finally began to drain from her spine, her muscles going soft as she surrendered to the safety of his arms.
