Part 105

The echo of that name, Rob, left Noel standing in the doorway like he'd been struck by lightning. His stomach turned; the realization that his face had morphed into her tormentor's in her mind was a trauma he wasn't prepared for.

'She called me Rob,' Noel whispered, his voice sounding hollowed out.

Liam grabbed Noel's arm and shook him hard. 'Not now, Noel! That wasn't her talking, that was the gear and the panic. Call Steve! Now!'

Noel snapped into action, his fingers fumbling as he dialed the number of his longtime head of security. 'Steve! Caro's bolted. Back exit of the hotel I think. She's in a total state, don't let her out of your sight, but stay back! Don't trigger her! stop her, for god's sakes, stop her.'

'Got it!,' Steve's calm voice crackled through the phone. 'I'm already pulling out of the lot. I think I see her.'

Noel and Liam didn't wait for the lift. They tore through the fire door and thundered down the concrete stairs, their footsteps echoing like a frantic pulse through the shaft. By the time they burst out into the damp morning air of the back alley, they saw the blacked-out SUV rolling slowly down the side street.

Fifty yards ahead, Caroline was a fragile blur of silver pants, running on stilettos over the wet asphalt. She was staggering, her shoulders heaving with sobs, looking back over her shoulder as if a monster were chasing her.

Steve moved with clinical precision. He sped up slightly, angled the SUV toward the curb to cut off her path into the main road, and jumped out before the car had even fully stopped. 'Caroline! Easy darling, it's me, Steve. It's only me, love, slow down' they heard him call out, his voice low and steady.

She tried to pivot, to dive into a narrow gap between buildings, but she was spent. The adrenaline had burned out, leaving her knees buckling. Steve caught her just as she began to collapse, his arms wrapping around her firmly but gently.

'There! He's got her' Liam shouted, and both brothers broke into a desperate sprint toward them.

They tore across the road, ignoring the screech of brakes and the honking of a delivery van. Noel's heart was hammering against his ribs, not just from the run, but from the raw terror of what he would see in her eyes. As they reached the SUV, Steve was holding a sobbing, hyperventilating Caroline. She wasn't fighting him anymore; she was limp, her eyes wide like a trapped animal.

Noel skidded to a halt a few feet away, his hands trembling. He wanted to reach for her, to pull her into his arms, but he could only watch Steve expertly pin her against the side of the car, not to hurt her, but to keep her from lunging into the path of a passing bus.

'It's ok, love, you're safe now, Noel's here' Steve panted, his face set in a grim mask of concentration. 'Get off me! Let me go!' she cried, her eyes still looking for a way out.

Caroline's eyes finally landed on Noel. For a heartbeat, the crying paused, and she just stared at him with a look of such profound, naked shame which hit him like a freight train. She gave up and went limp in Steve's arms, her forehead resting against the cold metal of the SUV.

Noel glanced nervously around the street. The morning rush was beginning to pick up, and though most people were still hurrying to work, he knew it was only a matter of seconds before someone recognized the Gallagher brothers standing in an Edinburgh side street.

'Steve, get her off the street. Fast!' Noel ordered, his voice raspy and frantic. 'Before the whole neighborhood stops to watch. Get her in the car!'

Steve nodded curtly, practically lifting the hyperventilating Caroline off her feet. She offered no resistance; the adrenaline had burned out, leaving her a hollow shell that let everything happen to her. Liam held the door open while Noel helped her onto the back seat. As soon as she was settled, Noel climbed in beside her and pulled the door shut with a heavy thud, sealing the outside world away.

In the car, a leaden silence fell. Caroline didn't speak. She didn't look at Noel, and she gave no sign that she even heard him. She turned her head away, resting her forehead against the cold glass of the window while tears streamed incessantly down her cheeks.

Noel shifted closer to her, trying to find her hand. 'It's going to be okay, Babe,' he whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. 'We're going to fix this. We're doing this together, you hear me? I'm right here.'

He reached out to gently caress her hair, a gesture that had always been her anchor. But the moment his fingers brushed against her, she flinched. It was an instinctive reflex, a painful recoil as if his touch physically burned her skin. She didn't utter a word, but she huddled even further against the SUV door, away from him, her eyes squeezed tightly shut.

Liam stared straight ahead through the windshield, his jaw clamped shut, while Steve steered the SUV cautiously back toward the hotel's private garage.

The moment the SUV skidded to a halt in the hotel's private garage, the frantic energy shifted into a cold, desperate efficiency. Noel was ghost-white, his jaw trembling, but he didn't hesitate.

'Steve, call the medic. Now!' Noel barked as he threw open the door. 'I want him in the suite before we even get there. Tell him it's an emergency, no questions, just get him there!'

Steve nodded, reaching into the back to gently lift Caroline from the seat. She was limp, a fragile doll of silver and silk, her eyes still glazed over with the haunting images of a cabin in the woods she couldn't escape. Noel walked inches away from her, his hands hovering near her trembling frame, but he didn't touch her, terrified that his scent or his voice would trigger another scream for Rob.

They hurried her through the service elevator and straight back into her room, the same room where, only an hour ago, Noel had discovered the velvet pouch. They laid her on the bed, but she remained motionless. She wouldn't look at Noel, wouldn't acknowledge Liam's presence, and wouldn't utter a single syllable to either of them. Her silence was absolute, a fortress of shame.

When the medic arrived, he took one look at her dilated pupils and tremors and asked the brothers to step out. Noel hesitated, his heart breaking at the thought of leaving her side, but Liam gripped his shoulder and pulled him toward the door.

Inside the quiet of the room, Caroline's wall finally crumbled. As the medic checked her vitals, she finally turned her head, her eyes dark with a hollow, terminal exhaustion.

'I wish I was dead,' she whispered, her voice a dry, jagged rasp.

The medic paused, his hand on her wrist. 'Don't say that, Caroline. You've got people out there who'd do anything for you.'

She shook her head slowly, tears carving a path through the grit on her cheek. 'No..I've got nothing left. I've got nobody left.'

Her words were flat, stripped of hope, the ultimate confession of someone who felt she had already vanished before her heart had even stopped beating.

The minutes in the hallway stretched into a torturous eternity. Behind the heavy oak door, the quiet was terrifying, a void that felt more ominous than her screams on the street.

It felt like hours before the handle finally turned. The medic stepped out, closing the door with a slow, deliberate heaviness that made Noel's stomach drop. The man looked shaken; he avoided Noel's eyes for a moment, rubbing his face in exhaustion.

'How is she?' Noel rasped. His voice sounded fragile, as if it might shatter under the weight of the answer.

'She's stable, physically,' the medic said, his voice low. 'I've given her a sedative to stop the tremors and help her sleep through the worst of the initial crash..But Noel..I think the damage goes far deeper than the chemicals in her system.'

Noel took a step forward, his heart hammering against his ribs. 'What are you saying? Just tell me.'

'She's given up,' the medic said quietly, his voice heavy with a somber finality. 'She's convinced she's destroyed everything, specifically you. She's spiraled into a place where she can't see a way back. Noel, she has lost all will to live. She says she hasn't got anyone left..She isn't fighting to get better; it's like she's just waiting for the lights to go out, or for someone to give her push to make them go out..'

'Look, she needs a professional detox facility, and she needs it today,' the medic continued. 'But more than that, she needs to know that she is loved and needed here..it is something you will need to think about..no offense if you should say that this is too much to handle for you right now, Noel. We're all human and you have a world tour on your hands..I'll start with getting her admitted, just think about what you want to do, again no hard feelings if you decide to walk away.'

Liam didn't wait for Noel to speak. He saw the way Noel's knees buckled slightly, the way his eyes went wide and vacant, staring at the floor as if the world had just opened up beneath him.

'Give him a second,' Liam muttered to the medic, his voice tight as he grabbed Noel by the upper arm and pulled him aside, away from the clinical gaze of the doctor.

When they reached the corner, Noel slumped against the wall, his chest heaving but making no sound. He looked like a man who had been struck by lightning, still standing, but burnt out from the inside.

'Noel, look at me,' Liam growled, grabbing his brother's shoulders 'Look at me!'

Noel's eyes snapped to his, raw and bleeding with shock. 'How can she give up like that?'

'Because she's drowning in it, Noel!' Liam hissed, his face inches from his brother's. 'She's looking through a lens of guilt and drugs and whatever the hell Rob did to her body and mind in that cabin. She doesn't see the truth right now, she only sees the wreckage.'

Noel shook his head violently, his breath hitching. 'How can she just say she has no one. Liam, she has no parents left. No siblings. She's lost so much already... does she really think I'm just another person who's going to vanish? Does she think the kids and me aren't enough to stay for?'

He looked back toward the bedroom door, his expression shifting from pure shock to a desperate anger. 'Surely she must know that she is safe with me. And now she's just... waiting for the lights to go out? Waiting for a push?'

Noel's hands curled into fists, his knuckles white. 'Well, she's not getting it. Not from me. I don't care about the world tour. I don't care if the doctor thinks it's "too much to handle." I am her family now. If she has no one else, then I am everyone to her. I'm not leaving.'

He grabbed Liam's forearm, his grip bruising. 'I'm going back in there. I don't care if she's sedated. She needs to know that if she goes, she's dragging me with her, because I'm not letting go.'

Liam looked at him, seeing the terrifying resolve in Noel's eyes. 'She might not want to see you when she wakes up, Noel. The shame..the guilt..she doesn't want to drag you down.'

'She's not and she won't,' Noel whispered, his voice hard as flint. 'I'm not walking away, Liam. Never.'

'Wait' Liam caught Noel's arm once more before he could disappear into the room. He could see Noel was operating on pure adrenaline and heartbreak, and he needed to ground him before the logistics of their life tore everything apart.

'Noel, wait. Just listen to me for one second,' Liam said, his voice low and steady, acting as the anchor Noel clearly didn't have. 'I'm not saying you should leave her. I'm saying we need a plan for the tour.'

Noel looked at him, his hand still white-knuckled on the door handle. 'The tour is over, Liam. I'm not leaving her side.'

'We have four days,' Liam countered firmly. 'Four days before we have to be in Dublin. And after that, we have another two weeks in Europe before the flight to Canada. That is eighteen days, Noel.'

He stepped closer, lowering his voice so the medic wouldn't overhear. 'We play the shows. We get her into the facility today, we get her stabilized, and we play Dublin. It keeps the press off our backs and gives her the space to breathe without a headline saying she's the reason the tour folded. We use those next fourteen days to see how she responds to the detox. If she's still in that dark place when the Canada leg comes up, then we pull the plug. We make the decision then. Not now, when you're in shock.'

Noel stared at the floor, his chest still heaving. He was processing the timeline, calculating the hours he would be away versus the hours he could be by her bed.

'Four days until Dublin,' Noel repeated, his voice hollow. 'And two weeks until Canada.'

'Exactly,' Liam said. 'It gives us a window. It gives her a window. If she wakes up and realizes she's the reason you've ruined the band's year, her guilt will finish what Rob started. Let's stay on course for now. For her.'

Noel's jaw tightened, but he finally gave a slow, jagged nod. 'Fine. We play. But the second those fourteen days are up, if she isn't fighting, I'm done. I don't care about the contracts.'

'Deal,' Liam whispered.

Noel pushed the heavy door open and stepped into the dim, hushed stillness of the suite. The air felt thick, charged with the scent of sterile medical supplies and the faint, lingering trace of her perfume. Caroline lay motionless on the bed, the sedative had taken hold, but she wasn't fully under; her eyes were open, fixed in a glassy, vacant stare at the far wall.

He moved toward her, his footsteps silent on the plush carpet. He dragged the chair until it was right against the mattress and sat down. His heart, which had been hammering with fury in the hallway, settled into a heavy, aching throb.

He didn't hesitate. He reached out and took her hand and squeezed it firmly, refusing to let her drift further into the gray void she had created for herself.

'I love you,' he whispered.

The words were raw, stripped of any artifice. He leaned in closer, his face inches from hers, until he could feel the shallow, rhythmic puff of her breath against his cheek.

'I love you, Caroline. I love you so much'

She didn't turn her head. She didn't blink. But as he squeezed her hand again, a single tear escaped the corner of her eye, trickling down her face before disappearing into the pillow.

'I know what you told the doctor,' Noel continued, his voice dropping to a fierce, low rasp. 'I know you think you have no one left. But you're wrong. I'm right here and I'm sure as hell not Rob. I'm your man and I'm not giving up on you..You can wait for the lights to go out all you want, but I'm going to sit here in the dark with you until you're ready to see the sun again.'

He pressed his forehead against the side of her hand, his shoulders shaking with the effort of holding himself together. 'I'm not letting go, Caroline. Never.'
