Part 88
19:00, 24 April 2026The heavy doors of The Ivy swung shut with a violent thud as Noel erupted onto the street. He pushed through the swarm of paparazzi, his face a mask of white-hot fury that sent the photographers scrambling back. He jumped back into the van that had brought them here.
By the time he reached the hotel, the adrenaline had incinerated the alcohol in his system. He was now terrifyingly, brutally sober and extremely heartbroken.
Noel made a beeline for Liam's room. He didn't just knock; he hammered against the wood with a frantic, rhythmic violence that threatened to splinter the frame. Inside, Liam and Debbie were caught in a rare pocket of domestic calm, huddled in the amber glow of the living area over cartons of half-eaten Thai food. The sudden, brutal thundering made Debbie flinch, her fork clattering onto the coffee table.
Noel didn't wait for the door to fully open; he shouldered his way in, a trembling mess of nerves. 'I saw her,' he whispered, the words sounding like they were being dragged over gravel. 'I saw them at The Ivy. At my table. Rob was sitting there, smug as hell, and Caro...' He shook his head, his voice cracking. 'She looked like a counterfeit version of herself. It was her face, her hair, but it was like there was a different woman sitting there.'
Liam stood rooted, his eyes darting between Noel's frantic pacing and Debbie's ashen face. 'What? You saw her? You're sure?'
The frantic energy died out of him all at once. He looked at them, but he was clearly miles away, back at that table. 'I walked right up to that table,' he said, his voice sounding strangely small, like a child lost in a storm. 'I..I lost it, I threw the worst things I could think of at her, the betrayals, the other women, the hatred. I told her she was nothing to me anymore. I gave her everything I had, and I might as well have been talking to a wall.'
He collapsed onto the edge of the sofa, his head dropping into his hands. 'But she just sat there. She didn't even flinch, Liam..I got close enough to smell her breath, and it was all chemical sweetness. Drugs. Heavy ones. I was spitting venom at a woman who was so far gone she probably didn't even know her own name.'
Liam looked at his brother, a cold, leaden weight settling in his stomach. He and Noel were experts in the field of chemical escapes; they had spent years chasing every high under the sun, and they knew the markers of a heavy dose better than any doctor. But not Caroline.
'Dope?' Liam repeated, his voice dropping an octave. He looked at Noel with a sharp, jagged worry. 'Noel, come on. Caro doesn't touch that stuff. She wouldn't even take a sleeping pill if she was exhausted. If you could smell the chemicals on her breath..if she was that vacant..she wasn't partying.'
Noel looked up at him and nodded, confirming what he already thought 'I know..she is being drugged, Rob is giving her a high dosage of something like Devil's Breath, I think..he clearly has her acting as a puppet. No will, no resistance, just total obedience. If he's got her on that, Liam..you know as well as I do what it does...
Liam took a sharp step back, his face draining of color. He and Noel had played with fire for years, but they always knew the boundary between a "high" and a "lobotomy."
'I know..yeah,' Liam said, his voice trembling with a deep, underlying dread. 'If he's keeping her on a high dosage of something like that for weeks..the damage becomes permanent. It's neurotoxic. He is gonna fry her brain.'
He looked at his brother with wide, haunted eyes. 'If her brain stays in that chemical fog too long, the Caroline we know might never come back..or..maybe she's trying to erase herself..after all, she's the one who ran right back to that fucker.'
A sharp, strangled gasp tore through the room behind them. It was Debbie; she sat there paralyzed, her eyes blown wide with horror. The talk of "erasing" and "frying her brain" had been the final hammer blow to her conscience. She couldn't carry the weight of the secret for another second; the truth was clawing its way up her throat, desperate to be told.
'Stop! Enough!' Debbie's voice cracked as she screamed, her composure completely shattered. 'She's not trying to erase herself, Noel! How can you be so blind? You think she wants to be with him? You think she's swallowing that poison voluntarily?' She got up and walked up to him, her gaze sharp and accusing.
'Don't you dare call her a traitor again. She told me the whole truth at Wembley during rehearsals. A cop had to carry her into the medical room, she was falling apart, Noel. She couldn't even breathe.'
Noel stood up slowly, his face a mask of horrified disbelief. 'The medical room? What are you talking about?'
'Rob was holding a gun to her head!' Debbie blurted out. 'Not literally, but with a text. A photo of you on stage, followed by a promise to strip away everything you care about. She was terrified, he was threatening you and your kids, he was even threatening Liam and the boys, the band as well, everyone. He had her in a chokehold.'
She leaned in, her voice trembling 'She told me she was trapped. Going back to him was the only way to keep the people she loves alive and breathing. She buried the truth because she knew you'd do something stupid and probably end up dead, if you knew. She didn't betray you, Noel. She sacrificed herself to save you.'
The room went silent as Noel looked at Debbie, his eyes narrowing into a dangerous, dark focus that made the air feel thin. 'What ?? What the fuck are you saying?' he repeated, his voice vibrating with a low, ominous power.
'Don't you understand, Noel?? she did it for you!' Debbie cried out. 'While you were playing rockstar, she was being hunted. He was sending her proof, stalker shots of the kids, of the band, showing her exactly how easy it would be to wipe you all out. He held your lives over her head like a debt.'
Noel's face went pale, the horror finally sinking in. 'She went back to Rob..to save us?' 'To save everyone!' Debbie stepped toward him, her defiance finally overriding her fear. 'You, Liam, the kids. She walked into that cage of her own free will so you wouldn't have to. She knew you'd go after him and get absolutely slaughtered, so she chose the only way to keep you alive. She gave herself up to a monster to buy your safety.'
The sheer weight of the night, the venom he'd spat into Caroline's ear, the "traitor" slurs, the unadulterated cruelty, hit him with the force of a high-speed wreck. He hadn't been avenging a betrayal; he had been tormenting his own shield. He'd been breaking her heart while her mind was being chemically dismantled just to keep him alive.
--
The ride to the woods was a chilling descent into hell. Rob was a picture of relaxed triumph, his occasional, cold touches staking a claim on her skin that made her skin crawl.
Caroline's exterior was stone, but inside, she was screaming. The chemical fog had paralyzed her voice, but it left her consciousness sharp enough to bleed. Noel's venom looped through her mind, a brutal, high-definition replay of his contempt.
'Coward... replaced... stupid cunt.' It wasn't a memory; it was a physical sensation. She could still feel the tremor of his lips against her ear as he tore her apart. She had been desperate to tell him she was his shield, that this living death was the ransom for his life, but her voice was a ghost, and her tongue was nothing but a numb, useless weight.
'He bought every second of it,' Rob murmured, scanning her features in the car's amber glow. 'It was almost too easy. That look of pure loathing..he truly hates you, Caro. You're dead to him now.'
A sharp pain tore through her chest, yet her face remained a porcelain mask. The chemicals had reduced her to a spectator at her own execution. She'd heard Noel call her a 'lobotomized doll', she'd felt the desperate urge to reach out, to scream that she was still in there, but she couldn't. She was buried alive within her own skin.
The tires crunched onto the cabin's gravel, the hollow, familiar sound of her prison. Rob guided her out, his fingers digging painfully into her arm. 'Don't look so tragic, sweetheart,' he whispered. 'It's better this way. Now that the world hates you, I'm all you have left.'
Inside, he led her to the bedroom. As he slowly slid the zipper of her silk dress down, Caroline watched the shadows dance on the ceiling. Every insult Noel had hurled at her, the claims that he'd replaced her, the bitter labels, burned in her mind. She was a ghost, forced to watch as her captor undressed her. 'You did so well today,' he whispered, pressing a cold, dry kiss to her lips. 'Tomorrow, I might lower the dose a bit. I'm starting to miss your voice.' He pushed her back onto the mattress, reclaiming what he thought was his in the suffocating silence of the night.
--
Noel's knees almost gave way, his hand slamming onto the back of a chair to keep himself standing. 'No..no, no, no. This can't be true...fuck!' He stared at Debbie, his eyes wide with a raw, primal terror. 'I have to find her... I... I need to..'
The words died in his throat, replaced by a ragged, wheezing breath. He looked around the hotel room as if the walls were physically closing in, his mind racing back to that table at The Ivy. He saw Caroline's vacant, dilated eyes again, the way she hadn't even blinked while he ripped her soul to shreds.
'This is all my fault,' he whispered, the realization hitting him like a landslide. 'I walked away. I looked her in the eye and told her she meant nothing to me. And then I just..I left her with that monster.'
He grabbed his head, his fingers digging into his scalp as if he could claw the memory of the last hour out of his brain. 'What else did she say?' Noel's voice was a jagged, frantic whisper now.
He took a staggering step toward Debbie, his eyes piercing and feverish. 'Think, Deb! She must have said something. A location, anything about where that prick would take her!'
Debbie shook her head desperately, tears now streaming down her face. 'I don't know, Noel! She didn't even know it herself! All she knew was that he was coming for her, and that she was doing it to keep the rest of us out of harm's way.'
'For fuck's sake, Debbie!' Noel snapped, his frustration boiling over into a blind, powerless rage. He gripped the back of a chair so hard the wood groaned. 'There's got to be something she must have said? You were right there with her, how long were you in that medical room? Were you even listening? She's out there somewhere, right now, while her mind is being burned away, and you don't have a single goddamn clue?'.
'I swear, Noel, she didn't say anything else!' Debbie cried, recoiling into the sofa cushions.
'Noel, back off! Enough!' Liam stepped resolutely between them, planting a firm hand on his brother's chest and shoving him back. 'If you scream at her once more, I swear I'll punch your lights out! She doesn't know, okay? She doesn't know!'
The confrontation with Liam caused the last of Noel's adrenaline to drain away. The anger vanished as quickly as it had arrived, leaving only a gaping void of shame. He looked at Debbie, trembling and broken, and the disgust at his own behavior hit him almost as hard as the truth about Caro.
'I'm sorry,' Noel murmured, bowing his head, his hands hanging limp. 'I'm sorry, Deb. I'm just.. lost. So fucking lost without her,' he whispered, his voice nothing more than a raspy crackle. 'I'm just so fuckin' scared I'll never see her again. And that the last thing I said to her was the only thing I should never have said.'
Liam exhaled slowly, removing his hand from Noel's chest, but he remained standing between them. He looked down at his brother, who stood there shattered, and the protective anger in his eyes softened into a profound, heavy pity.
'We're going to get her back,' Liam promised, his tone calm but unyielding. 'But stop taking it out on Deb. She isn't the one who created this nightmare.'
Debbie wiped her face with her sleeve, her breath still hitching in her chest. 'She kept saying he was everywhere. That he saw every hotel room, every rehearsal, every step you took. She was convinced that just being near you was a death sentence for you, Noel. She really left to take the target off your back.'
Noel nodded slowly, a painful movement. The thought of Caroline at that table, drowning in drugs and guilt for something that wasn't her fault, felt like venom in his veins.
'I'm calling the police,' Liam announced, reaching for his phone. 'Those same bastards who claimed she left of her own free will..let's see how fast they move once they hear about the blackmail.'
