Part 87
19:00, 23 April 2026The room was swathed in the deep, velvet shadows of the early hours. The only sound was the distant, rhythmic hum of the city, Liam was wide awake and wired. He was tangled in the expensive sheets, his body humming with a nervous energy that usually only hit him before a massive gig. He shifted again, his arm brushing against Debbie's.
'Come here, you,' Debbie whispered, her voice a soft, sleepy caress in the dark.
She didn't wait for him to move. She shifted closer, sliding her arm across his chest and tucking her head into the crook of his neck. Her warmth was a sharp contrast to the cold, clinical thoughts racing through his mind.
His hand gently caressed her arm. 'I can't get it out of my head, Debs,' he muttered, his lips brushing the top of her hair. He sounded smaller than usual, the bravado stripped away by the darkness. 'It's like a bad dream that's just looped on repeat. My head's telling me one thing, but my instinct's screaming that something's fuckin' rotten.'
Debbie squeezed his hand, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. She breathed in the scent of her man, being this close to him, feeling the honest, raw worry in his chest made the silence she was forced to keep, feel like a physical weight.
She turned her face into his shoulder, hiding her eyes. 'Just try and get some more sleep, Lee. You're exhausted.'
'How can I sleep when my brother's going absolutely bonkers?' Liam's voice cracked slightly. He shifted his grip, pulling her even tighter, as if he was trying to anchor himself to her. 'If Caro really did just walk away...if she really chose that prick over him..then I don't know who she is anymore. And that's what's scaring me the most. How could she be so sneaky?'
Debbie closed her eyes tight, and pushed a warm kiss on his shoulder. She so wanted to look him right in the eye and tell him that Caroline loved Noel and his kids more than her own life, that she was a hero, not a traitor. But the image of Rob's dark shadow over Noel and his children kept her frozen. Yes, she was worried about her friend as well, extremely worried about that erratic decision of her to face Rob all by herself, but it had been her own choice and she had to respect it, despite her own feelings.
She just let out a shaky breath and kissed the pulse point at his neck, a silent, desperate apology. 'I know, I know' she whispered. 'I've got you.'
Liam buried his face in her hair, his eyes still wide and staring into the gloom. 'I know you do, babe. I know, she was your friend too..'
The silence in the room felt fragile, like a thin layer of ice over a deep, dark lake. Liam's fingers continued their restless wandering over Debbie's arm, his touch tender but his grip firm, as if he feared she might slip away into the shadows too.
'In Manchester she sat with us in that hotelroom, remember?' Liam murmured in her hair 'Laughing her head off as she tried on one of your jackets. Planning the Wembley after-party. You can't fake that, Debs. You can't be that good an actress.'
He shifted, pulling himself up slightly so he could look down at the faint outline of Debbie's face. The raw vulnerability in his eyes was something he only ever showed her, stripped of the rockstar armor. 'You saw her backstage yesterday..Did she look like a woman who was about to torch her whole life? Did she hint at doing something like that?'
Debbie felt a cold shiver run down her spine. The weight of the secret felt like lead in her lungs. She could still hear Caroline's frantic, hushed voice in her ear: 'You have to promise me. Not a word. Not to Noel, not to the Police and definitely not to Liam, if you tell anyone, you're putting me as well as them right in the line of fire.'
She forced herself to stay relaxed in his arms, though every muscle wanted to coil and hide. She reached up, her hand cupping Liam's jaw, her thumb grazing the stubble there.
'She was..she was stressed, Liam,' Debbie said, her voice a careful tightrope walk between truth and the lie she had to tell. 'Big show, big life. Maybe it all just got too heavy, after all she had that burnout to deal with too. Maybe the past just caught up in a way we don't understand.' Debbie squeezed her eyes shut so tight she saw stars. She wanted to scream that Caroline was currently in a cage of her own making, sacrificing her reputation and her safety to keep a monster away from their doorstep.
Instead, she just exhaled a shaky breath against his skin, she so wished Caro would just try and contact her, did she have another phone with her?. 'Sometimes when people are scared, Liam, they run to the thing they know best. Even if it's bad for them.'
Liam didn't answer. He just tightened his hold on her, pulling her so close there wasn't a millimeter of air between them. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his hot breath ghosting over her skin. 'I'm going to his hotel first,' he whispered into her skin, his voice thick with a sudden, exhausted finality. 'I need to see my brother. I need to make sure he hasn't done something he can't come back from.'
Debbie pressed her forehead against his chest, listening to the frantic thud of his heart. She was mourning her friend, fearing for her life, and watching the man she loved break for their friend he now thought was a traitor. And she had to let him believe it.
--
The following days bled into one another in a sickening haze of twilight and chemical silence. Rob kept to a strict, clinical schedule; every time the heaviness in Caroline's limbs began to lift and the sharp edges of reality, the cold, the persistent throb in her jaw, the rising panic, threatened to return, he was there with the needle.
He didn't break her with screams or blows just yet; he broke her with a terrifying, distorted form of "care."
'You're still so restless, Caro,' he'd whisper, his voice a calm anchor in her blurred world as he wiped a cool cloth over her forehead. He was systematically poisoning her mind, layering lies over the drug-induced fog. He read to her from the tabloids he'd brought, articles showing Noel stumbling out of clubs, headlines screaming that the elder Gallagher was "finally free of his traitorous muse."
'Hear that?' he'd ask softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear with possessive slowess. 'No one is searching. They're relieved you're gone. You're safe here with me, because out there, you've already been forgotten. And I won't ever forget you, you can be sure of that!'
Caroline wanted to scream that he was lying, but the drugs made her tongue thick and her thoughts like molasses. The isolation began to do its work. Without any other human voice to contradict him, she started to doubt herself. Was the memory of Noel's love a fever dream she'd invented? The walls of the cabin seemed to inch closer every day, as Rob stripped away her identity piece by piece. He stopped calling her 'Caroline,' using instead pet names as if she no longer existed, reducing her to something that no longer deserved to be called by her real name.
In the brief moments between doses, she would stare at her own hands and fail to recognize them. She was becoming a shadow, a fragile object that Rob was reshaping into the version of her he had always wanted. The outside world felt like a myth, and Rob was becoming her entire universe, her captor, her nurse, and her only source of "peace."
--
While Caroline dissolved into a chemical twilight, Noel was living a paradox of clinical brilliance and total self-destruction.
On stage at Wembley, he had never been better. The raw fury and the sting of betrayal lent the shows a dangerous, electric edge that pushed the performances into the realm of legend. He played every note as if he was trying to draw blood, his voice more powerful and haunting than it had been in years. To the eighty thousand people screaming his name, he was a rock god at the absolute zenith of his powers, turning a public heartbreak into a masterpiece. The reviews were unanimous: these were the greatest shows the band had ever played.
But the moment the final chord of 'Champagne Supernova' echoed into the night and he stepped off the stage, the mask didn't just slip, it shattered.
The night air outside the club was thick with the scent of exhaust and rain, but inside, it was a neon-lit blur of bass and sweat. Noel stood in the center of the VIP booth, the "Chief" in his element, or at least the version of him the world expected to see. He was several drinks past caring, his eyes glazed but his posture radiating a defiant, nervous energy.
He was surrounded. A pack of willing women, models, hangers-on, and girls who had waited hours just for a glimpse of him, pressed close, their hands roaming his body every chance they got. They were laughing at jokes he didn't remember making, feeding his ego with a desperate intensity that he used to fuel his own fire.
He felt a pair of arms wrap around his chest from behind. A girl with dark, kohl-rimmed eyes leaned into his ear, whispering something he couldn't hear, but he didn't need to. He turned in her arms, his movements sluggish but deliberate. He grabbed her waist, pulling her against him, and crashed his mouth onto hers.
It wasn't a kiss; it was a performance. It was a middle finger to the memory of the woman who had walked out on him.
Across the club, a paparazzi photographer who had bribed his way into the gallery leaned over the railing. Click. The strobe of the club masked the flash, capturing the moment perfectly: Noel Gallagher, the heartbroken rockstar, moving on in the most public, messy way possible. The image showed him mid-snog, his hands possessive, a girl draped over him like a trophy.
Noel pulled back, gasping for air, a smear of her lipstick across his jaw. He saw the lens out of the corner of his eye and didn't flinch. Instead, he smirked, raised his glass toward the camera, and pulled the girl back in for more.
By the time he stumbled out of the club at 5:00 AM, the photo was already viral. The headline was written before he even hit the pavement: "Noel's Wild Night: Chief Forgets Runaway Lover in London Club." He climbed into the back of a car, the silence of the vehicle hitting him like a physical blow. He wiped the lipstick from his face with the back of his hand, staring out at the gray London streets, the adrenaline of the club curdling into a cold, hollow ache.
--
The past week had continued further into a meticulous exercise in psychological erosion. In the airless quiet of the cabin, Rob hadn't just used the drugs to keep Caroline still; he had used his voice to hollow her out.
He spent hours pacing the floor, belittling the life she had been trying to build with Noel, calling her a "pathetic groupie playing at being a queen" and a "distraction" that Noel had already discarded like a broken guitar string. He forced her into a state of silent, trembling submission, making her ask permission to move, to eat, to breathe.
He took what he wanted from her with a cold, clinical entitlement, treating her body like a piece of property he was finally reclaiming from a thief.
He had been prepping her for their first public appearance, he had choreographed every detail. He knew Noel's post-show rituals; one of his colleagues in the hospitality industry had told him which high-end Mayfair haunt would be the "Chief's" sanctuary tonight.
Rob had dressed her himself, peeling away the last of her own, extravagant and unique rock-and-roll identity. He'd chosen a conservative, mid-length silk dress in a muted pearl tone, classical, expensive, and utterly unlike her. He'd brushed her hair into a smooth, high ponytail. She looked absolutely beautiful in a tragic, frozen way, like a museum piece behind glass.
The drive from the cabin had been a masterclass in psychological subjugation. Rob sat behind the wheel of a darkened town car, one hand on the wheel, the other hand clamped over Caroline's wrist, with the steady, pulsing grip of a man holding a leash.
His selection of The Ivy was a calculated strike. This was Noel's sanctum, and he intended to pave over Noel's legacy with his own. He wanted to occupy the 'Chief's' throne and parade his prize: a queen recaptured, her spirit fractured, and every vibrant drop of her rock-and-roll soul bleached into a ghostly white.
As the car pulled up to the curb, Rob leaned into her space, his warm breath ghosting over her skin. 'A lady at last, Precious. The tragedy suits you so much better when it's hidden. You're going to sit there, you're going to eat, and you're going to play the part of a woman at peace. But mark my words: if you waver, if you give him even a sliver of the old you..remember what is at stake, babe. Remember how quickly a life can go quiet. You wouldn't want to jeopardize the safety of those 3 little kids of him, with any of that inappropriate behaviour of yours, now would you?'
Inside, the restaurant was a cathedral of amber light and clinking crystal. Rob had secured the most prominent table, the one Noel usually occupied.
A strange, drowning lethargy took hold of her. The classical silk dress Rob had forced her into, felt like cold skin against her own. Her thoughts were muffled, lost in a fog of cotton wool that turned the world so very distant and gray. With heavy, robotic limbs, she followed his silent choreography: sitting where she was told, placing her hands exactly where he commanded, a ghost inhabiting her own body.
They were halfway through the first course when the heavy doors groaned open.
Noel didn't just enter the room; he occupied it. Still vibrating from the adrenaline of another Wembley show, he walked in with the night air on his jacket and a reckless laugh for his entourage. He was the King of London in his prime, demanding his table and a drink, his eyes searching for any woman who could help him forget the one he couldn't have.
Then, his gaze hit the center of the room.
The transition was violent. Noel's laughter didn't just stop; it was strangled. He froze in the center of the aisle. His entourage behind him almost crashed into his back like a pile-up on the motorway.
Rob didn't even glance at the chaos in the aisle; he had orchestrated this moment with lethal precision. This was his moment de gloire, and he was going to savor every drop. He took a lingering sip of his Chablis, his eyes locked on Caroline's vacant stare, before leaning in to claim her full lips. It was a gesture stripped of all warmth, a brutal, calculated display of dominance that signaled to the entire room exactly who she belonged to.
'Don't get distracted, darling,' Rob murmured, his voice slicing through the suffocating silence. He didn't look at Noel; he watched Caroline with the terrifying pride of a man who had finally tamed a wild animal. He reached out and covered her hand with his, a heavy, possessive weight against the white linen.
Caroline sat perfectly still, anchored in a void. Her eyes, dilated and glossy from the evening's 'supplement,' were locked onto the flickering candle flame as if it were the only light left in the universe. She was deaf to the world; the sound of Noel's ragged, heaving breaths didn't even register, and she remained oblivious when he took a staggering, disbelieving step toward their table. To the room, she looked refined and lovely, but in reality, she was a hollow shell, an elegant masterpiece with a soul that had been surgically removed.
'Mr Gallagher, sir, your usual table is..' The waiter's plea was a distant whisper, irrelevant to a man watching his world collapse. Noel's gaze was glued to the pearls at her neck; they looked like cold, white bruises against her skin. He had spent the week hating her, fueled by a jagged, vengeful fire.
Noel's vision blurred, the red haze of too much alcohol clashing with a grief so sharp it felt like a physical wound. He didn't see the crowd, he didn't see Rob's triumphant smirk. He only saw the wreckage of the only person who had ever made him feel human.
He lunged forward, slamming his palms onto the table with a violence that made the crystal wine glasses dance. He ignored Rob entirely, leaning across the white linen until his face was inches from Caroline's. Close up, the reality was a physical blow to the stomach. He could smell the chemical, synthetic sweetness of the drugs on her breath, clashing with the familiar scent of her skin that still haunted his pillows.
'How dare you?' he hissed, his voice a sharp blade of sound, trembling with a nervous, toxic energy. 'How dare you walk out on me like a coward, only to show up here, looking like a fucking secondary school teacher?'
Caroline's head tilted with agonizing slowness, her dilated eyes struggling to track his moving lips. Her body remained frozen, but beneath the silk, her heart was thundering against her ribs.
'Is this the game, Caro?' Noel's voice dropped even lower, a venomous, rhythmic hissing meant only for her ears. 'Is this how you fuck with my head? You think you can just erase us by putting on a few pearls and sitting there like some lobotomized doll? You really think I'm going to beg?'
He gave a short, mirthless bark of laughter that ended in a shaky breath. 'I've got a secret for you, darling. You're replaced. Every. Single. Night..'
He leaned in even closer, his eyes burning into her vacant stare. 'I hope he's worth the price of your soul. Stay with your protector, Mr. Rapist here, it's clearly what you're into now, huh? he's already put you in enough danger more than once and I'm sure he won't miss a second chance of running you off the road.'
Rob's hand tightened on her wrist under the table, a sharp pinch of reality, reminding her of the kids, of the danger, of the stakes. Caroline didn't speak. She let her mind go numb, drifting into the shadows of her own head.
'Bon appétit,' Noel spat, the words dripping with a finality that tasted like ash.
He shoved himself away from the table, turned on his heel and stormed toward the exit, his silhouette framed by the flashes of the paparazzi waiting outside like vultures.
He didn't look back. He didn't see the single, heavy tear that finally broke free from Caroline's eye, rolling slowly down her cheek and stained the expensive, muted silk.
