Part 84
19:00, 20 April 2026The sound of eighty-five thousand people faded into a rhythmic, industrial thrum as Caroline descended deeper into the concrete veins of the stadium. Every step away from the stage felt like a limb being severed. She reached the North Tunnel, a cavernous, poorly lit stretch where the humid night air met the chill of the underground.
The text on her phone had changed one last time: The maintenance alcove. Behind the backup generators. Don't make me come looking.
The noise of the generators was a deafening, mechanical snarl that vibrated through her skull. She rounded the corner of a massive steel unit, and the world went cold.
Rob wasn't standing in the shadows; he was the shadow. He was leaning against a stack of heavy flight cases, his silhouette sharp and predatory. He wasn't looking at his watch. He was looking at her, his eyes reflecting the flickering amber light of a service pylon.
'I'm here,' Caroline said, her voice barely a whisper against the roar of the machinery. 'Let him finish the show. Leave him be, like you promised. I kept my promise, now you keep yours and you leave him and everyone around him the fuck alone'
Rob didn't answer immediately. He pushed off the crate and moved toward her with a slow, deliberate grace that made her swallow hard. As he entered her space, the smell of expensive aftershave hit her.
'You're shaking, Caroline,' he murmured, his voice a terrifying contrast to the roar around them. 'Is that fear? Or just the realization that the fairy tale is over?'
Before she could pull back, his hand shot out. It wasn't a gentle touch; his fingers clamped around her upper arm like a vice, the pressure bruising and absolute. With his other hand, he didn't just take her phone, he pried it from her white-knuckled grip and dropped it. He didn't look down as he crushed the screen under the heavy sole of his boot.
'Mine now,' he hissed in her ear, making the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.
He lunged forward, his arm coiling around her waist and jerking her flush against his chest, pinning her arms down. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply. 'You still smell like him,' he spat, his voice vibrating against her skin. 'We'll have to wash that off.'
He spun her around, forcing her back toward the darkness of a waiting, unmarked van. Caroline let out a broken sob, her eyes darting back toward the tunnel entrance where the faint, distant blue light of the stage still flickered.
Noel was in the middle of Don't Look Back in Anger. The entire stadium was singing, a massive, unified choir that shook the very foundations of Wembley. He was leaning back, his eyes closed, letting the crowd take the chorus. He felt like he was floating.
But in the wings, the atmosphere had shifted.
Jason was standing by the monitor desk, his hand hovering over his radio. He looked at the floor where Caroline had been standing. Her 'Access All Areas – crew' pass was lying on the ground, the lanyard snapped as if it had been ripped off.
The sliding door of the van gaped open, a dark, hollow mouth waiting to swallow her..Caroline stared into the lightless interior, her mind a frantic, screaming kaleidoscope of everything she was about to lose. She could still hear the distant, rhythmic thud of the drums, Noel was still out there, alive and singing in a world of adoration and happiness, completely unaware that the girl in the wings was about to dissapear.
Her heart didn't just ache; it felt like it was being physically crushed, shard by shard. Every instinct she possessed urged her to scream, to bolt back toward the light, to fight until her nails broke. But then she felt the cold, hard weight of Rob's presence behind her, and she remembered the stakes.
One scream, and the fairy tale wouldn't just end, it would bleed.
With a shuddering breath that rattled in her chest, Caroline stepped up into the van. She did it voluntarily, her legs heavy and numb, each step a silent goodbye to the man she loved. She sat on the cold, ribbed floor, pulling her knees to her chest in a desperate attempt to hold the pieces of herself together.
Rob didn't say a word. The silence was more suffocating than his threats. He climbed into the driver's seat, the van rocking under his weight. He didn't look back at her; he didn't need to. He knew he had won.
The engine turned over with a low, guttural growl that drowned out the dying echoes of Wembley. As the van lurched forward, Caroline's mind went into a feverish overdrive. She was terrified of where they were going, of the 'washing off' he had promised, of everything that awaited her from here on. But through the crippling fear, she clung to one thought: Noel's safe. As long as I am here, he is safe, the kids and the band are safe.
She watched through the tinted glass as the stadium's perimeter lights flickered past, rhythmic and uncaring. Rob steered the van through the winding service roads with a terrifying, clinical focus, weaving through the dark arteries of the stadium toward the motorway.
The silence inside the car was absolute, save for the hum of the tires on the asphalt and the sound of Caroline's irratic breathing. She sat in the dark, a silent captive in the cage she had walked into herself, watching the glow of London swallow the last of the blue stage lights in the distance.
The final, cataclysmic chords of Champagne Supernova dissolved into a wall of white noise as a barrage of fireworks erupted from the rim of Wembley. High above the stadium, the night sky shattered into gold and violet, the percussion of the explosions vibrating in the band's chests.
Noel stood at the front of the stage, taking off his guitar, his face illuminated by the rhythmic strobing of the pyrotechnics. Beside him, the rest of the band stepped forward, sweaty, grinning, and completely drained. They stood as a unified front against the roar of eighty-five thousand people who refused to stop screaming. They waved, a jagged line of triumphant men, soaking in a success so absolute it felt like it could never end.
'Fucking magic!' Gem yelled over the thunder, gesturing to the sea of lights. Noel just nodded, his chest heaving, a rare, genuine smile plastered on his face. He felt like he was floating.
As the smoke from the fireworks drifted over the pitch, the band began the walk off-stage. They moved in a huddle, shoulders bumping, laughing and cursing with high-octane energy. They were heading for the sanctuary of the dressing rooms, for the drinks and the celebration they had more than earned.
But as they rounded the final corner of the concrete corridor, the laughter died.
The area outside Noel's dressing room wasn't filled with the usual celebratory crew. Jason was standing there, his face the color of ash, looking older than Noel had ever seen him. Next to him stood three uniformed police officers and two detectives in plain clothes, their faces grim and professional.
The band slowed to a halt, the silence of the hallway suddenly more deafening than the stadium roar had been.
'Jason?' Noel asked, his voice losing its edge of triumph as the cold of the underground air hit his damp skin. 'What's going on?'
Jason didn't speak. He stepped forward, his hand trembling as he reached into his pocket. He opened his palm to reveal Caroline's 'Access All Areas' pass. The plastic was jagged, the lanyard snapped and stained with dirt from the tunnel floor.
One of the detectives stepped forward. 'Mr. Gallagher? We need to talk to you'
Noel stared at the broken pass in Jason's hand, then at the detectives. The world, which a minute ago had been made of fire and gold, went pitch black.
Noel's euphoria didn't just fade; it was ripped away. He stood in the concrete hallway, sweat cooling on his skin, staring at the snapped lanyard in Jason's shaking hand.
'Jason?' Noel's voice was low and dangerous. 'Where is she? Stop staring at the floor and tell me where she is.'
Jason swallowed hard, his eyes finally meeting Noel's with a look of pure, agonizing dread. 'Noel..I don't know..she's gone. She's missing.'
The words hit Noel like a physical blow. He froze for a split second, the reality of the sentence failing to compute against the high of the show. Then, the explosion came.
'Missing?' Noel's voice was a jagged roar that bounced off the concrete walls like a gunshot. 'What the fuck do you mean, missing?'
He lunged forward before anyone could react, his fingers bunching into the fabric of Jason's heavy jacket. He slammed the bigger man back against a stack of flight cases with a violence that made the metal hardware rattle.
'She was in the wings! I saw her! How do you lose a person in a locked-down stadium?!' Noel screamed, his face inches from Jason's, his eyes wild and bloodshot with a terrifying, sudden panic.
'Noel, wait..' Jason choked out, his hands up in a defensive, non-confrontational gesture, but he looked too broken to even fight back.
Immediately, the two uniformed officers moved in. One grabbed Noel's shoulder, while the other stepped between the two men, forcing Noel to break his grip.
'Mr. Gallagher, back away! Now!' one officer barked, his hand hovering near his belt.
'Get your hands off me!' Noel snarled, spinning on the policeman, his chest heaving. He looked like a cornered animal, his hair damp with sweat and his hands shaking with a manic, vibrating energy. 'You're standing here doing nothing! Why aren't you out there? Why aren't you locking the fucking gates?'
'We are doing our job, sir,' the officer said, his voice a sharp, clinical contrast to Noel's meltdown. He stepped into the space between them, his presence forcing Noel to stay back. 'But you need to listen. We have checked the perimeter. We have checked the gates.'
'Then find her!' Noel screamed, kicking a nearby equipment rack so hard the plastic snapped. 'She wouldn't just leave! If she's not on your shitty cameras, it's because Rob found her! and you know it'.
Jason leaned against the flight cases, his head bowed. 'The cameras..they didn't see him, Noel. They didn't see anyone. They just saw her walk into the dark alone.'
Noel froze, his breath coming in shallow hitches. He looked from Jason's defeated face to the grim, professional expressions of the police. The realization that they were treating her like a runaway, and not a victim, sent a fresh wave of terror through him.
'She's not a runaway,' Noel whispered, his voice cracking, the rage suddenly replaced by a raw, hollow sound of pure agony. 'She's terrified. Someone find her. Please..someone just find her.'
One of the officers stepped forward, holding a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside, Caroline's phone was a wreck of shattered glass and twisted metal.
'We found this behind the backup generators, Mr. Gallagher,' the officer said, his voice maddeningly clinical. 'The impact point suggests it was crushed by a deliberate force. But here is the issue: our cameras show Caroline entering that alcove alone. They show her standing there and then walking out toward the service exit. There is no second person on the footage. No struggle. No Rob Evans.'
Noel stared at the mangled device, his heart hammering against his ribs 'You think she just decided to destroy her own phone in the middle of a locked down Wembley?' he yelled but before he could continue about the safe houses they had to go to because of the threats, the officer held up his hand to him.
'Statistically, Mr. Gallagher, yes,' he replied, unmoved. 'People snap. They reach a breaking point. We've already started the process of accessing her cloud data. We're going to pull every message, every encrypted thread she's received in the last forty-eight hours to see who she was talking to. But right now? Based on the CCTV and the lack of any unauthorized entry at the checkpoints, we aren't classifying this as an abduction.'
'What?? You're what??' Noel roared, his voice cracking.
'As of this moment, she is a 'voluntary departure.' She walked out of that gate on her own two feet and maybe got into a van that had a valid pass. Until we find evidence of foul play or a ransom demand, she isn't 'missing' to us. She's just gone.'
The van took a sharp, aggressive turn off the tarmac and onto a rutted track, the suspension groaning as it hit deep potholes. Suddenly, Rob slammed on the brakes. The tires skidded on the loose gravel, and the engine died with a violent shudder.
For a moment, the silence was absolute, heavy and suffocating.
Rob stepped out of the driver's seat, the door clicking shut with a finality that echoed through the trees. Caroline remained in the back, her heart hammering against her ribs as the side door was pulled open. The air outside was sharp and smelled of damp earth and pine.
Rob didn't wait for her to gather herself. He reached into the dark cavern of the van, his hand hooking around her upper arm like a steel claw. With a brutal, impatient jerk, he dragged her across the ribbed metal floor.
She almost went down, her knees buckling, but Rob's grip yanked her upright, forcing her to march toward the dark, sagging porch of the cottage.
'Inside,' he barked, his voice cutting through the stillness of the woods.
He shoved her through the front door and kicked it shut behind them, reaching out and flicked a switch. A single, naked bulb flickered to life, casting harsh, yellow shadows across the peeling wallpaper. He turned to her, and for the first time, the predatory tension in his shoulders seemed to ease into something even more terrifying.
'Finally,' he whispered, his eyes scanning her face with a terrifying intensity. He stepped into her personal space, his chest nearly touching hers, pinning her against the door she had just entered. 'No more Noel. No more Oasis. No more pretending you belong in that circus. You're exactly where you need to be.'
He reached up, his hand sliding behind her neck, his fingers tangling in her hair and forcing her head back. Caroline's breath hitched, her heart fracturing in her chest. She wanted to scream, to spit in his face, but the memory of his threats against Noel and his family kept her frozen.
'Welcome home, Caro,' he murmured.
He leaned in, his face eclipsing the light. When he pressed his lips to hers, it wasn't a kiss; it was a reclamation. It was hard, demanding, and extremely revolting.
Caroline's eyes flew shut. A wave of pure, visceral revulsion surged through her, a physical sickness that made her throat tighten. She felt the gag reflex rising, a desperate urge to vomit as his aftershave, that expensive, suffocating scent, filled her senses. She had to clench her jaw, biting the inside of her cheek until she tasted copper just to keep from retching.
Rob pulled back just an inch, his thumb tracing her jawline with a terrifying, calm possessiveness. 'You've missed me, didn't you?' he stated, a thin, delusional smile touching his lips. 'I can tell..'
