Part 76
23:42, 14 April 2026Caroline's breathing finally shifted from the drugged rhythm, into something lighter and more conscious. Noel, who hadn't moved from his vigil in the chair, watched as her eyes slowly fluttered open.
There was no immediate panic this time. Instead, her gaze drifted across the familiar luxury of the suite before landing on him. A small, genuine smile touched her lips, the first one he'd seen in what felt like a lifetime.
'You're still here,' she whispered, her voice still raspy but lacking the indifference and hurt of the previous night.
Noel let out a breath he felt he'd been holding since last night. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the edge of the mattress. 'Told you I wasn't going anywhere, didn't I? I'm that fool who's madly in love with you, remember?'
She reached out a hand, and he met her halfway, his fingers closing around hers with a protective, grounding warmth. She squeezed back, and he was relieved to feel a bit more strength in her grip.
'How are you feeling?' he asked softly, his eyes scanning her face, lingering briefly on the dark stitches before meeting her gaze again. 'Be honest with me.'
Caroline took a slow, deliberate breath, feeling the dull ache in her cheek. 'Better,' she said, and to his immense relief, she actually sounded like she meant it. 'Stronger than last night. I don't feel so zoned-out anymore.'
She looked at the sunlight filtering through the heavy curtains, then back at him. 'Thank you for staying with me..'
Noel gave her a small, lopsided grin, the tension in his shoulders finally beginning to ebb. 'There's nowhere I'd rather be than here,' Noel repeated, his voice dropping an octave, losing the 'Chief' bark entirely. He brought her hand up to his lips, kissing her knuckles with a lingering tenderness that anchored them both to the moment. 'Wild horses couldn't have dragged me out of this room, Caroline. Not even the last sold-out Heaton Park tonight.'
Caroline watched him, her heart aching with a mixture of love and guilt. She could see the faint dark circles under his eyes, the rumpled state of his shirt, and the way he still looked like he was bracing for a blow.
'You haven't slept a wink,' she murmured, her thumb tracing the line of his jaw. 'You should have rested, Noel. You have Wembley to start thinking of.'
Noel let out a dry, short laugh and shook his head, leaning his cheek into her palm. 'The fans can wait, you're the only headliner I care about right now.'
He shifted slightly, moving his chair even closer to the bed so he could look directly into her eyes. The morning light was catching the grey in his hair, making him look human, vulnerable, and entirely hers.
'I'll just have to take it day by day,' she promised again, her voice gaining more color as she spoke. 'Last night felt like I was underwater, but today...today the air feels clear. I'll be okay, Noel. We'll be okay..'
Noel nodded, though his grip on her hand tightened just a fraction, a silent acknowledgement of the battle still ahead, even if he wasn't ready to let the outside world back in just yet.
'Right then,' he said, clearing his throat and forcing a more cheerful tone. 'If you're feeling so much stronger, does that mean you're ready for some actual food? Because I am.'
Caroline smiled, a real, lopsided one that reached her eyes. 'I think I could manage some toast. And maybe some of that ridiculously expensive coffee this hotel is famous for.'
'Done,' Noel said, reaching for the bedside phone. 'I'll have them bring it up then. We'll have a proper breakfast, just the two of us, before the madness starts again.'
Caroline laughed softly, a sound that did more to heal the room than any doctor's visit. Noel smiled too, his thumb tracing a gentle line over her knuckles. For the first time since the world had turned upside down, the ghost in the corner of the room seemed a little less imposing.
Noel reached for the bedside phone, his fingers lingering on the receiver. 'I'll have them bring it up then,' he said, his voice regaining that familiar, gravelly warmth. 'A proper breakfast, just the two of us, before the madness starts again.'
He quickly rattled off the order, his tone clipped and professional. But as he hung up and turned back, he found Caroline watching him with an expression that made the air in the room feel light and sweet.
'Noel,' she whispered, her hand sliding across the sheets toward him. 'Forget the chair. Come here. Next to me.'
Noel hesitated for a second, 'Babe..don't tempt me, I think it's best if I stay on my side here on my chair..' he rolled his eyes, both of them knowing that the minute he did, it might just turn physical quickly, his body was genuinely addicted to her touch.
'Please,' she insisted, her voice a soft command.
Noel kicked off his boots and climbed onto the bed next to her. He propped himself up against the headboard, and she immediately gravitated toward him, tucking herself into the curve of his arm. He felt her sigh against his chest, a warm, rhythmic vibration that seemed to settle the frantic beating of his own heart.
Then, she tilted her head back. Her eyes were dark, searching his, before she reached up and threaded her fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck. She pulled him down, her lips meeting his in a kiss that wasn't just a greeting, it was a deep, hungry reclamation.
Noel felt a jolt go through him. He'd spent the last forty-eight hours viewing her as something to be guarded, something made of glass, but the way she was kissing him now was pure fire. He responded instinctively, his hand sliding into her hair, his thumb grazing the soft skin behind her ear.
But as the kiss deepened and she shifted her weight, pressing her body firmly against his, a cold spike of panic hit him. He felt the heat rising between them and, with a shaky breath, he gently broke the kiss. 'Wait,' he breathed, his forehead resting against hers. 'Caro, love... slow down.'
'I don't want to go slow,' she murmured, her lips brushing against his jaw. 'I want to feel something else. I want to feel alive again.'
Noel closed his eyes, his grip on her shoulders tightening just enough to hold her at a distance. 'I know. I want you more than anything.' He pulled back just an inch, his eyes raw with a mixture of desperate wanting and protective fear.
'Listen, you've been through hell lately, babe. And right now, you're running on adrenaline and relief' He brushed a stray hair from her forehead, his touch trembling. 'I want you. More than anything. But I want all of you, when you're ready, I mean really ready, like mentally and physically ready'
Caro looked up at him, her eyes softening as she reached out to cup his face. 'Noel,' she whispered, a small, tender smile tugging at her lips. 'You don't understand. For you? I will always be ready. There isn't a version of me that doesn't want you.'
She leaned in, her forehead resting against his, her breath warm against his skin. 'When my mind starts to race, when the world feels like it's too much..it's you who levels me. Being this close to you, feeling you, it's the only thing that makes the noise stop. It's how I know I'm okay.'
Before he could protest again, she let her hands and mouth slide down his chest, trailing fire over his skin until she reached his abdomen, crawled between his legs and took her time opening his jeans.
Noel let out a shaky breath, the air between them shifted, turning from heavy concern to a golden, romantic hum of anticipation.
'Caro...' he breathed, his voice a mix of surprise and pure, liquid devotion.
The sharp knock-knock-knock of the waiter was like a bucket of ice water over the sweltering heat in the room.
'Room service! Breakfast for Mr. Gallagher!'
The silence that followed was thick with disbelief and frustration. Caro stayed exactly where she was for a heartbeat, her forehead resting against the denim of his jeans, before she let out a long, frustrated huff that vibrated against his skin. She looked up at Noel, her lips parted and her eyes clouded with interrupted passion.
Noel closed his eyes, tilting his head back toward the ceiling with a groan that was half-laugh, half-agony. He reached down, gently but firmly taking her hands in his and pulling her back up on the bed.
'Fuck their timing,' he murmured, a small, lopsided smile tugging at his mouth, though his eyes remained serious. 'It wasn't meant to be, Caro. Not like this. Not right this second.'
He leaned in, pressing a deep, lingering kiss to her forehead, holding her there for a beat longer than necessary. He felt a surge of incredible happiness, the 'love track' was back, the connection was restored, and she was looking at him with that raw devotion again. But as he let go and got out of bed to fix his clothes, the knot of anxiety in his chest finally loosened.
He was relieved. He loved her fiercely, but he knew the shadows behind her eyes hadn't fully vanished yet. He didn't want their first time back together to be a frantic escape from her trauma; he wanted it to be a celebration of her healing.
'I'm going to get that breakfast' he said, his voice regaining its steady, protective warmth. He gave her waist a playful, affectionate squeeze. 'You, on the other hand, are going to sit down and eat something. You need your strength, and I need a minute to let my heart rate return to a human level.'
Caro let out a soft, frustrated huff, but the tension had bled out of her, replaced by a weary, grateful smile.
As the meal wound down, Noel moved the tray aside and pulled her back into the center of the bed. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, tucking her small frame against his chest. For a few long, quiet minutes, they just stayed like that, watching the dust motes dance in the sunlight. It was peaceful, romantic, and felt like the world had finally stopped spinning.
He pressed a slow, tender kiss to the crook of her neck. 'You smell like sunshine and expensive jam,' he murmured against her skin, his hands tracing soothing circles over her arms.
Caro leaned back into him, closing her eyes. 'And I haven't even showered yet' she whispered as a little smile danced around her lips.
But as the minutes ticked by, Noel felt the shift. The softness of her muscles began to tighten into a subtle, rigid tension. Her thumb started nervously stroking the edge of the sheet, and the faraway look returned to her eyes, not the drugged gaze from before, but a somber weight of responsibility.
'Noel,' she said, her voice sounding small but determined. 'The show tonight..I think we need to start getting ready'.
Noel held her hands, his thumbs tracing slow, deliberate circles over her knuckles as he looked for the right words. He wasn't talking to just anyone; he was talking to the woman who kept his entire world on the tracks, but who was currently threatening to derail herself.
'Caro, listen,' he started, his voice dropping into a lower, more measured frequency. 'I know you've led this tour like a general. You're the best Tour Manager I've ever had, and because of that, you know I'm right. If any of the crew walked up to you in this state, you'd fire them on the spot for their own safety. Why should it be different for you?'
Caro didn't pull away, but her spine stiffened. 'Because it's me, Noel. Because if I'm not at that mixing desk or handling the security briefing, I feel like I'm about to lose the last bit of control over my own life. Staying in this hotel feels like surrendering. I'm not a porcelain doll; I'm a professional.'
Noel nodded slowly, frustration warring with admiration in his eyes. He knew something she didn't, that the situation outside had shifted. He knew that Rob had been released in London, and while the legal teams were scrambling, the man was technically out. Noel wanted to keep her in this bubble of safety for as long as possible before the 48-hour countdown to London was up.
'I'm not asking you to surrender,' he said softly, leaning in until their foreheads touched. 'I'm asking you to think about it, yesterday was..a lot..it was a disaster..If you go back to Heaton Park with us, you're stepping back into the line of fire.'
'I can handle the line of fire,' she snapped, though her lips trembled. 'I've done it for years.'
'Not like this,' Noel insisted, his voice unyielding. 'Let me do the show. If you're out there and you have a relapse while I'm stuck on that stage, I can't get to you. That's a risk I'm not willing to take as your partner.'
He let the silence hang, knowing that ultimately, she had to be the one to make the call. 'I'm not forcing you; you know I can't. You're the Tour Manager. But do me a favor and think if you're actually ready. Are you ready for the questions about that scar on your face? Because once this rollercoaster starts running, it can run you off track in 5 seconds..your call, babe!'
Caro pulled back just enough to look him in the eye, her gaze flickering between her professional armor and the raw vulnerability he'd just exposed. 'The questions,' she instinctively lifted a hand toward her cheek, her fingers hovering just inches away from the stitches. 'I hadn't..I hadn't thought about the guests. The VIPs. The 'how are yous' that aren't actually asking how I am.'
She looked at Noel, seeing the desperate, protective love in his eyes. She knew he was offering her an out, not as a weakness, but as a strategy. But the Tour Manager in her screamed that if she didn't show up for the final Manchester date, she was handing over her power.
'Listen,' she said, her voice steadier now, though her hand was still trembling. 'If I stay here, I'm just waiting for the world to find out. If I'm there, I'm the one telling the story. Even if I don't say a word, I'm there. I'm standing.'
She leaned in, pressing her forehead back against his. 'I need to hear the roar of that crowd, Noel. I need to hear you..I need to hear the band..I need the energy exploding around me..'
Noel searched her face, looking for any sign of a crack. He knew Rob being out in London meant this peace was on a timer, but if being at the site gave her back her sense of self, maybe it was the lesser of two evils.
'Ok, fine,' he grumbled, though he pulled her into a fierce, rib-cracking hug. 'But the minute you feel that 'rollercoaster' slipping? You tell me. Or you tell security. If you try to 'manager' your way through a panic attack, I'm stopping the set. I mean it, Caro.'
'I know you do,' she murmured into his chest, finally letting herself relax into him. 'I'll be okay. Let's just get through tonight.'
The bleeps on his phone pulled them both out of the romantic setting, he slowly let go of her and swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood up, offering her his hand to pull her out of the bed. 'Go on then. Get in the shower. I need to make a couple of calls to the site, tell the boys the 'Manager' is coming in, ..and Caro?'
She paused at the bathroom door, looking back at him.
'Don't hide that scar with too much makeup,' he said, his voice soft but incredibly proud. 'It's a badge of honor. You're still standing. That's all that matters.'
A small, genuine smile finally touched her lips. 'Fine, I'll see you in twenty, Chief.'
As the bathroom door clicked shut and the sound of the shower started, Noel's smile faded. He reached for his phone on the nightstand, his thumb hovering over the screen. He had forty-eight hours before the London storm hit, but right now he had to make sure Heaton Park was an absolute fortress for her tonight as well.
