Part 74

13:06, 12 April 2026

Noel finally broke his paralysis when the door's bang echoed in the empty trailer. He scrambled, grabbing his jacket and nearly tripping over a stray flight case. The adrenaline that usually sustained him through a two-hour set had turned into a cold, sickening dread.

The car ride was a nightmare of silence. Every red light felt like a personal insult, every second a brick being added to the wall Caroline was building between them. By the time the black SUV screeched into the hotel's underground bay, Noel was out the door before it fully stopped.

He didn't use the VIP lift; he ran for the stairs, his lungs burning, the rock star persona shedding with every frantic step. He burst onto the 4th floor, his heart hammering against his ribs as he looked for her room.

Inside the suite, the lights were dim. Caroline was standing by the bed, putting in the last of her clothes in the suitcase. She looked up as he burst in, disheveled, still wearing his stage clothes.

'Caroline,' he gasped, his voice cracking. 'Wait. Whoaaa, just, wait.'

She didn't flinch. She didn't even look angry. She looked at him with a terrifying, calm detachment. 'The show's over, Noel. You can stop performing now.'

'What? It wasn't a performance,' he said, taking a tentative step toward her, his eyes fixed on the bruised welt and gash on her cheek. It looked even worse in the soft lamplight. 'I was just trying to protect the tour. I was trying to stop the noise so I could think.'

'No,' she said softly, her voice steady. 'You were only protecting yourself and her..You let her say and do whatever she wants to me, I'm being used as her personal punching bag, but the minute I lose my shit, I'm the one being kicked out. And she gets to do whatever she likes, this is the second time she's hit me now, how many more times does she get to physically attack me before you finally react?'

'I didn't mean it like that,' he pleaded, reaching out for her hand. 'I just couldn't have you all in there together. I was fuckin' drowning.'

Caroline stepped back, avoiding his touch. The movement was small, but it felt like a canyon opening up between them. 'Oh is that what it was? Alright, well..' she shrugged

Caroline reached for the zipper of her suitcase, her movements cold and final. But before she could pull it shut, Noel was there. He didn't just reach out; he slammed his hand down on the lid of the suitcase, the heavy thud echoing through the room.

'No,' he snapped, his voice dropping the pleading tone and hardening into something fierce and uncompromising. 'You're not doing this. You're not just shrugging your shoulders and walking out on us because I had a momentary breakdown in a backstage right before a show. I was in as much shock as you were, alright? I keep spinning round in circles with her and it's fuckin' frustrating!'

He stepped into her personal space, forcing her to look up at him. The sweat from the stage was still damp on his brow, but the frantic panic in his eyes had been replaced by a raw, burning determination.

'You think I'm protecting her?' he growled, his voice vibrating with a jagged edge of pain. 'I am loathing every second of this divorce. I am disgusted by what she's become, and I am sick to my soul that she laid a finger on you. I stood there like a statue because I was terrified that if I moved, I'd do something that would let them take you away from me forever. I was trying to keep the lawyers out of our bed, Caroline!'

He grabbed her arms, his grip firm and possessive, refusing to let her drift further away. 'I made a mistake. A massive, staggering mistake. I let the pressure of my job drown out the man who really loves you. But I am telling you right now, I am not letting you leave this room.'

He pulled her toward him, his chest heaving against hers. 'You want to talk about protection? I will burn that stage to the ground before I let you walk out that door. I'll let Sara take the houses, the money, the fucking songs, she can have the lot. But she is not taking you. I won't allow it.'

His eyes searched hers, dark and desperate, filled with a passion that was almost violent in its intensity. 'I am ashamed of everything that happened tonight except for you. You're the only real thing I've got left in this circus, and I'm done being a coward. You aren't going anywhere, Caroline. Not tonight. Not ever.'

He leaned in, his forehead crashing against hers, his voice dropping to a fierce whisper. 'Don't you fuckin' dare walk away.'

'You were "trying to keep the lawyers out of our bed"?' she closed her eyes and whispered 'we've only slept together twice..you can't really call that "our bed", Noel..this is not a relationship, it's more a situationship, and a toxic one too.'

The fire in Noel's voice died instantly. He recoiled as if she'd poured ice water down his spine. It wasn't the words that gutted him; it was the way she said them. There was no heat, no accusation, just a soft, hollow curiosity, as if she were observing a stranger's life from a great distance.

Her eyes didn't even seem to be focusing on him anymore. They were fixed on a point somewhere past his shoulder, glazed and terrifyingly vacant. The "canyon" hadn't just opened; she was drifting away on the current, and she didn't seem to care if she hit the rocks.

'Caroline?' he whispered, his voice cracking. 'Hey. Look at me.'

She didn't. She didn't even blink. 'It's just a funny thing to say,' she continued, her voice airy and light, completely disconnected from the bruised welt on her face. 'To worry about the lawyers in our bed. I was trying to remember what the sheets looked like. Or if we even had pillows. Everything's just..no..it doesn't matter. It's all just noise, isn't it, Noel? Just like you said.'

She reached out, her fingers mindlessly brushing the fabric of his T-shirt, but there was no spark, no connection. It was the touch of someone checking the texture of a curtain.

'You're so loud,' she murmured, a ghost of a smile touching her lips. 'Everyone is always so loud. Sara, her lawyers, even you. I really need to find somewhere calm and quiet.'

Panic, real and visceral, surged through Noel. He'd seen her angry, he'd seen her hurt, but he had never seen her gone. She was zoning out, retreating into a place where he couldn't reach her, where the trauma of the night had finally snapped the last thread.

'No, no, no,' he hissed, his hands moving from her arms to cup her face, forcing her to look at him. Her skin was hot and painful. 'Don't do that. Don't go there. Scream at me, Caro. Hit me. Do something. Just don't look at me like I'm not here.'

She finally met his eyes, but there was nothing behind them. 'But you aren't here, Noel, you're the one who called me to say I was a mistake, I was a lapse of judgement, and that I had to leave the tour instantly, what would you have done if Liam and the guys hadn't pulled me back on board?..' she said with that same haunting, placid calm. 'You're on a stage. You're with your wife and kids, but for me, you're just passing by to come and do some damage control, to keep the wifey happy probably, but after all I'm just the girl who everyone gets to despise and abuse.'

Noel's hands dropped as if he'd been electrocuted. He stepped back, the distance between them feeling less like a canyon now and more like an abyss. The 'wifey' comment didn't just hurt; it stripped him of every defense he had.

'Damage control,' he whispered, the words sounding hollow. 'Is that what you think this is? A clean-up job?'

'I'm not "with" her, Caroline. I haven't been with her for years. I was just too much of a coward to admit the wreckage was permanent.'

He looked at her, really looked at her, and the sight of her staring through him, not at him, made his stomach turn. She wasn't fighting him. She wasn't even resisting him anymore. She was just..done.

She didn't zip the bag. She didn't walk out. Instead, she simply stepped back, her movements leaden and clumsy. She crawled onto the middle of the large, sterile hotel bed, pulling her knees up to her chest as if trying to disappear into the white linens. Then, her silence broke, not with a scream, but with a low, heartbreaking sob that seemed to come from her very bones.

'Caro,' Noel breathed, he crawled in bed next to her trying to comfort her

'Everyone,' she sniffed, 'every single person I've ever let come close. They all just..they treat me like dirt. They use me up until there's nothing left, and then they lash out at me because I'm in the way.'

'Caro, I would never..'

'Rob was my best friend,' she interrupted, her voice gaining a feverish, hollow edge. 'I trusted him with my life, and he raped me and even tried to kill me. And my parents..' She let out a breathless sob. 'They didn't even want me. They never loved me. They only beat me until I couldn't scream anymore, and I had no one. No brother, no sister, no one to tell me it wasn't my fault..' by now her body was shuddering.

'I've spent my whole life trying to be quiet so I wouldn't get hit, I'm losing myself in my job organizing someone else's life and career, so I can run away as hard as I can from my own past and present. And now here I am. In a hotel room. Bruised and battered once again, not important enough for someone to care about. People genuinely hate me, Noel..and I don't even know why..' another deep sob surged through her body.

He didn't try to pull her into his arms. He knew he didn't have the right to touch her, not after standing like a statue while Sara added a new bruise to the collection.

'No one hates you, Caro,' he whispered, his voice cracking, thick with a sudden heat. 'They're just..they're terrified of you. They're terrified of how bright you are, and how much better you are than all of them. So they try to dim you. They try to break you so you're as small as they are.'

He reached out, his hand hovering over the mattress between them, palm up, an open invitation in the dark.

Caroline didn't take his hand. She didn't even look at it, her eyes closing as another heavy sob racked her frame. 'I just want to sleep,' she whispered, the words slurred with exhaustion. 'I just want to wake up and not be me anymore, you know?' and then slowly, almost imperceptibly, Caroline's hand turned over. She didn't grasp his hand, but she let her fingers rest against his, a tentative bridge over the abyss she had described.

'It hurts, Noel,' she breathed, her eyes still squeezed shut. 'Everything just hurts.'

Noel felt her fingertips against his, a touch so light it was almost a hallucination, yet it grounded him more than the roar of any stadium ever could. He didn't close his hand around hers; he didn't want to trap her. He simply let his warmth bleed into her skin, providing a steady, unmoving anchor in the middle of her storm.

'I know it does,' he whispered, his voice thick with a raw emotion. 'I know. And I'm so sorry I added to that pain. I'm so sorry I made you feel like you had to be quiet in the one place you should have been able to scream.'

He watched her through the dim lamplight, her face pale and devastated against the pillows. The realization of what she'd survived, and how he'd failed to protect her from that same violence, made him feel physically sick.

'You don't have to wake up as someone else, Caro,' he murmured, shifting just enough so his shoulder was a solid presence near hers, though he still didn't crowd her. 'Because the "you" that's here..the one who survived all that noise and still has enough light in her to make a mess of my soul and my heart..she's the only person I've ever truly wanted to know. I don't want the manager. I don't want the girl who fixes my life. I just want you..only you.'

He looked toward the door, then back at her closed eyes. 'Sleep. Just go to sleep. I'm not going anywhere. If you wake up and you still want to leave, I'll drive the car myself. But right now, let me be the one person who doesn't take anything from you.'

Caroline didn't answer, but her fingers twitched against his, a silent, exhausted acknowledgement. As her breathing finally began to slow into the heavy rhythm of total collapse, Noel reached out with his free hand and picked up his phone. He didn't call his brother. He didn't call his lawyer.

He sent a single text to his head of security: 'Change the locks on Caroline's suite. No one comes in. Not even the Pope. If Sara shows her face on this floor, call the police immediately. I'm done.'

He set the phone face down on the floor, severing his connection to the circus, and stayed exactly where he was, guarding the bridge she had built with her fingertips.

When Caroline's eyes opened, she didn't bolt upright. The exhaustion was too deep for that. Instead, she lay perfectly still. For a second, the familiar weight of dread started to pull at her chest, the habit of waking up and immediately calculating how to survive the day.

Then she felt it. A steady, warm pressure against her hand.

She turned her head slowly. Noel was still there, lying exactly where he had been when she'd finally succumbed to sleep. He had his eyes half-closed, staring at the far wall with a quiet, tired focus. He looked like a man who hadn't slept, still in his black stage shirt and jeans.

He felt her move and turned his head. There was no frantic questioning, no "rock star" intensity. Just a small, relieved exhale.

'Hey,' he whispered, his voice thick with sleep deprivation.

Caroline didn't answer immediately. She just watched him, her mind slowly catching up to the fact that the world hadn't ended while she slept. The room was quiet. No phones were buzzing. No managers were shouting.

'You stayed,' she said, her voice sounding small and fragile in the morning air.

'I told you I would.' He shifted slightly, but he didn't let go of her hand. His thumb traced a slow, rhythmic circle over her knuckles. 'How's your face?'

Caroline reached up with her free hand, tentatively touching the welt and the gash on her cheek. It throbbed with a dull, steady heat, and a sharp, biting sting. 'It hurts..I think I should have gotten some stitches at the hospital last night..'

Noel's eyes widened slightly, the exhaustion momentarily replaced by a sharp flare of guilt. He shifted closer, his gaze fixed on the dark, crusted line across her cheekbone. In the harsh, unforgiving light of morning, the gash looked deeper, the edges angry and swollen.

'Christ, Caro,' he breathed, his voice cracking. 'I was so focused on..on everything else, I didn't realize how deep it was. I'm an idiot.'

He pushed himself up on an elbow 'I'll call a private doctor,' he said, already looking toward the phone he'd discarded on the floor. 'Someone who can come here, just to get you sorted.'

He looked back at her, his eyes searching hers with a desperate sort of tenderness. 'Does it feel like it's pulsing? Are you dizzy?'

Caroline shook her head slowly, the movement sending a fresh throb of pain through her temple. 'Just stinging. Like it's on fire.' She looked at him, her eyes finally tracking the mess of his appearance, the wrinkled shirt, the way he looked like he'd aged five years in eight hours. 'You didn't sleep at all, did you?'

'Doesn't matter,' Noel muttered, reaching out to brush a stray hair away from her forehead, his touch as light as a feather. 'I've done four-day benders on tour, I can handle one night watching you breathe. But we're getting that looked at.'

He reached down and retrieved his phone, turning it on. The screen stayed black for a second before a deluge of notifications began to vibrate against his palm, hundreds of them, but he swiped them all away without a glance. He went straight to a private contact and as he put the phone to his ear, he slowly aimed for her lips, a little hesitant at first, and pushed the softest kiss on them.

Noel's breath hitched as his lips met hers. It wasn't a kiss of passion or demand; it was a question asked in the quietest way possible. It was his way of proving he was still there, tangible and anchored.
