Part 59
20:00, 19 March 2026Caroline's finger trembled as she disconnected her call 5 minutes after the first with Henderson. The lawyer was sending a courier with the new documents: a formal statement where she would declare, in black and white, that her black eye was the result of a "clumsy accident in the bathroom." No Noel. No assault. A bitter lie designed to kill the blackmail regarding Noel's supposed aggression before it could breathe, knowing the lawyers had zero proof of their secret romance.
She dropped her phone onto the duvet, pressing her ice-cold palms against her burning cheeks. She had to tell Noel the truth before the courier arrived, but how?. The paparazzi would devour him if he showed up there now.
In the gilded lobby of the Lowry Hotel, Noel bolted toward the revolving doors, his eyes wild and his knuckles white. The security guards hesitated, but a heavy hand on his shoulder brought him to an abrupt, jarring halt.
'Oy, hold up you, you're not going partying without me' Liam flashed a fake smile at the security guards, making the situation light so there wasn't anything to sell to the tabloids. He stood there with his parka half-unzipped, a look in his eyes that was uncharacteristically sharp for someone who'd just polished off a bottle of Stella.
'Stop it, Liam..' Noel started but stopped when his brother gave him an eyeroll in the direction of the security people.
Noel still knew nothing of the conversation with Henderson. He didn't know the lawyers were planning to frame him as an abuser, or that Caroline was about to blacken her own name to save him. All he knew was that the woman he loved was sitting in a hotel room with a bruised face and an envelope full of threats.
'No, you stop!' Liam hauled him toward a shadowed corner of the lobby, away from the glass doors where the paparazzi's flashes were already strobing like lightning. 'You drive to her hotel now, Noel, you give Sara the photo of you two she's waiting for. Game over.'
Noel was vibrating with repressed violence. 'I'm not leaving her alone with those sharks.'
'You're not,' Liam said firmly. He signaled to the head of security. 'Listen. We go out there. We get one of the roadies vans, nobody will know or care'.
Noel looked at him, confused. 'You never cease to amaze me, you know that?'
In her hotel room, Caroline jumped again at the sound of her phone ringing. It was Liam. She picked up, her heart in her throat. 'Liam?'
Liam said only one word, a code they all understood as the only sanctuary where the world couldn't reach them.
'Mum,' he said hoarsely.
Caroline understood instantly. Peggy's house. The only place in Manchester where no lawyer or photographer was thinking about going. The only place where she could finally lay the truth of Henderson's blackmail on the table.
She didn't say anything and just hung up the call.
A little smile danced around Noel's lips as he heard Caro's voice from the speakers, oblivious to the price Caroline had just paid for him.
Meanwhile, Caroline was already in a taxi, the manila envelope clutched so tightly her nails were digging into the paper. She watched the rain-slicked streets of Burnage fly by. How was she going to tell Noel that she was about to sign a document calling herself unstable just to keep him on his throne?
The taxi pulled up a block away from the quiet, familiar semi-detached house. As Caroline stepped out into the mist, she took a deep breath, buried her face in the hood of her coat and walked through the dark, calm street with her head bowed.
She reached the garden gate of Peggy's house. The warm, yellow light spilling through the curtains felt like a sanctuary she didn't deserve. She placed her hand on the cold iron of the garden gate, but her fingers refused to move. The papers inside the envelope felt heavier than lead. If she signed this, there was no going back. The world would see her as the 'broken assistant,' a woman who harmed herself in a fit of instability, all to keep the man she loved out of harm's way and away from scandal.
Her career, her reputation, her entire identity as the rock for this band... it would all evaporate in the ink of her signature.
The warm air of the hallway in Peggy's house hit Caroline's face, the envelope clutched so tightly to her chest that the cardboard began to buckle. Her heart skipped a beat as she stepped into the living room and saw Noel standing there, right under the harsh overhead light. He looked like he was seconds away from detonating; his hair was wild and his eyes were cold.
'Noel... I...' she began, her voice trembling with nerves. She searched for the words to explain the blackmail, to tell him about the photos of her face and Sara's trap. She wanted to carefully prepare him for the fact that Henderson was planning to frame him as an abuser. 'There's something I need to tell you, but it's complicated...'
'Complicated?' Noel cut her off mercilessly, his voice a raw, dangerous roar that thundered through the small room. He took a menacing step forward. 'What's bloody complicated, Caroline, is that you stood backstage and lied right to my face!'
Caroline flinched back against the doorframe. 'Noel, listen,..'
'No, you listen!' he bellowed, his face flushed with fury. 'I stood on that stage and I watched you walk away. I asked you, twice! 'Just a fan with an expired pass,' you said. You let me stand there like a total idiot while Sara and that shark of a lawyer were cornering you! Pete told us everything, Caro. Everything! Why? Why the hell would you lie to me about her? Do you think I'm such a pussy that I can't handle the truth? That I can't fight my own battles?'
'What was I supposed to do? You were on a fucking stage!!!! She wants to destroy you and it's me who will have to pay the fuckin' price for it!!!' Caroline screamed back, tears finally burning in her eyes. 'She has photos of this eye, Noel! And they are going to tell the world that you hit me! I was trying to save your name!'
The silence that followed was deafening. Liam's head snapped toward Noel, his eyes wide with a rare, chilling sobriety. The realization that Sara wasn't just playing games, but was actively trying to brand Noel as an abuser, hit both brothers like a physical blow to the gut.
Noel froze, his face draining of color. The anger that had been fueling him just moments ago withered, replaced by a cold, hollow dread as he looked at the envelope in Caroline's hands.
'They're doing what?' Liam whispered, the horror of the frame-up finally sinking in.
'They're going to say I'm an abuser?' Noel's voice was barely a whisper, the previous thunder in his chest replaced by a cold, sickening hollow. He looked at the envelope in Caroline's hands as if it were a live grenade. The realization that Sara, the woman he'd shared a life and 2 kids with, was willing to use a literal injury to send him to prison or end his career made the room spin.
Liam stepped forward, his usual swagger replaced by a rare, sharp lucidity. He snatched the envelope from Caroline's trembling fingers. 'Let me see that.'
He ripped the documents out, his eyes darting over the legal jargon. 'Jesus, Noel... look at this.' Liam held up the formal statement. 'They've got it all written out. She signs this, says she's "mentally unstable" and "prone to self-harm," and in exchange, they bury the photos of her eye so the police don't come knocking at your door.'
Liam looked at Caroline, his mouth hanging open in genuine shock. He saw the tears finally spilling over her cheeks, the way she was practically shrinking into the doorframe. 'You were actually gonna do it, weren't you? You were gonna let them call you a nutter just to keep him on his throne.'
Noel reached out, his hand shaking as he took the papers from Liam. His eyes went from the brutal close-up photos of Caroline's bruised face to the line where her signature was supposed to go. The magnitude of her sacrifice, and the sheer evil of the trap, hit him like a physical blow to the stomach.
'Caro...' Noel choked out, his anger completely evaporated. 'You thought I'd let you do this? You thought I'd be okay with this?'.
'What was I supposed to do? All of a sudden they show up with the police threatening to escort me out handcuffed..I bluffed, Noel!' Caroline's voice cracked, a frantic, desperate edge taking over as she stepped away from him. 'Back at the gig, when Henderson cornered me, I told him I had proof. I told him Liam had cameras inside the house, that I had footage of Sara lunging at me, of her being the aggressor! I thought if I made them believe there was a tape, they'd be too scared to touch you.'
She let out a hollow, bitter sob, shaking her head at her own naivety. 'But they didn't even blink. They looked me right in the eye and laughed, Noel. They knew. They knew Liam doesn't have a single camera inside that house. They've been watching us closer than we ever imagined. They knew I was holding a dead hand.'
She shook her tear-streaked head 'Sara wants her "fair share." She's demanding a stake in the merchandising, the touring, she wants a piece of everything you've built, and she's reconstructing my face to get it!'
Caroline turned back to Noel, her eyes wild with the trauma of the last hour. 'It's always me! Why is it always me she attacks? I'm the one who has to go through the digital blackouts, the one who has to disappear every time a camera is nearby, the one who has to be the ghost in your life. And for what? So I can sign a paper saying I'm a nutter who hits herself?'
Noel tried to step up to her to calm her down 'please, just calm down, you're shouting again'
'Everyone tells me to be quiet! Be quiet in the hotels, be quiet in the cars, don't let the neighbors hear, don't let the press see! I am tired of being quiet!' She turned back to Noel, her voice cracking. 'Why the fuck should I even bother anymore?!'
Caroline's voice suddenly died out, leaving a ringing silence in the room that was far more haunting than her screaming. She wasn't looking at Noel anymore. Her eyes were fixed on a spot on the floorboards, her chest still heaving, but the fire had been replaced by a cold, dead exhaustion.
Noel's hand was still half-extended, caught in a gesture of comfort she had clearly rejected.
Caroline straightened up, her movements slow and mechanical. She wiped a stray tear from her bruised cheek, but she didn't look in a mirror. She didn't care what she looked like.
'I'm done,' she whispered, her voice devoid of any emotion.
She turned toward the door. As she passed Noel, she didn't flinch, and she didn't stop. She moved around him like he was just another piece of furniture in a room she no longer recognized.
'Caro, wait..' Noel started, his voice thick with a sudden, desperate panic. He reached out to grab her sleeve.
She didn't say anything. She just stopped and looked down at his hand until he let go, her expression completely blank.
'I want to be alone, Noel,' she said, her voice flat and final. She opened the door 'Don't follow me. Don't call Henderson, don't call Sara. Just go to your party, you deserve it, it was such a great show' and with a soft click, the door closed behind her.
Noel stood in the sudden, agonizing quiet of his mother's hallway. The "soft click" of the door felt like a guillotine. This wasn't a hotel suite where he could call security or a backstage dressing room where he could demand answers. This was home, the one place that was supposed to be safe, now poisoned by legal threats and bruised faces.
Liam shifted behind him, his footsteps heavy on the old floorboards. 'Noel, look... Mum's in the other room. Let's not make a scene'
Noel spun around, his face contorting with a silent, jagged fury that made Liam flinch. The mention of their mother, the woman who had raised them in this very house to be better than the snakes currently circling Noel's career, felt like a slap.
'Don't you dare bring Mum into this to keep me quiet,' Noel hissed, his voice trembling with a dangerous edge.
He looked down at the floorboards, at a scratch in the wood he'd made as a kid, and then back at the door Caroline had just walked through. The "safety" of his childhood home felt like a lie. Every corner of the hallway was now stained by the memory of Caroline's shaking hands and the "dead hand" she'd been forced to play.
'She's out there, Liam,' Noel said, his voice dropping to a hollow, terrifyingly calm whisper. 'She's out there in the dark, thinking she's a ghost because we made her one. And you're worried about making a scene?'
Liam reached out, his hand hovering near Noel's shoulder. 'Noel, be rational. If she leaves without signing, Henderson will...'
Noel didn't let him finish. He shoved Liam's hand away, not with the explosive violence of a rockstar, but with the cold, hard rejection of a brother who no longer recognized the man standing in front of him.
'Let him,' Noel said. 'Let him do his worst. I'm done.'
He grabbed his jacket from the banister, the leather creaking in the silence. He didn't look back as he wrenched the front door open. The night air rushed in, smelling of damp earth and woodsmoke, the smell of the neighborhood he'd worked so hard to "escape," only to realize he'd traded it for a gilded cage that was killing the woman he loved.
Caroline was halfway down the garden path, her silhouette thin and fragile under the orange glow of the streetlamp. She wasn't running. She was just walking, her shoulders hunched, her movements stiff and mechanical, heading toward the gate with nowhere to go.
'Caro!' Noel shouted, his voice cracking, echoing off the quiet suburban brickwork.
She didn't stop. She didn't even flinch. It was as if she had truly become the ghost she claimed to be.
Noel scrambled down the porch steps, he reached the gate just as she put her hand on the latch.
'Caro, please,' he breathed, reaching out but stopping short of touching her, terrified she'd look at him with that blank, dead stare again. 'You can't just walk out into the night. It's Mum's house. You're safe here. It's just us'
Caroline slowly turned her head. The bruising on her cheek looked almost black under the streetlights. She looked at the house, the house where Noel grew up, and then back at him.
'Safe?' she whispered, her voice barely audible over the distant hum of the city. 'Noel, there is no 'safe' anymore. Your life is a goldmine, and I'm just the dirt they have to dig through to get to it.'
Noel flinched, the words cutting deeper than any headline or legal threat ever could. To hear her describe herself as 'dirt' in the context of his own success made the bile rise in his throat. He looked at the gate, then back at his mother's front door, where the warm light spilling out now felt like a spotlight she was desperate to escape.
'You're not the dirt, Caro,' he said, his voice dropping to a raw, jagged whisper. 'You're the reason I get up in the morning. But if the gold is what's poisoning us, then let them take it. Let them have every penny, every tour, every bit of it.'
He took a tentative step closer, closing the gap until he could smell the cold night air on her skin, mixed with the faint, lingering scent of her perfume.
'I'm not letting you walk away into the dark,' he said, his hand hovering near hers on the cold iron of the gate. 'If you're leaving this house, then I'm leaving with you. No security, no Liam, no Henderson. Just us. We'll go to a hotel they don't know, or we'll just drive until the sun comes up. I don't care about the show. I don't care about the "fair share."'
Caroline's hand tightened on the latch, her knuckles white. She finally looked him full in the face, and for a second, the dead exhaustion in her eyes flickered with a spark of agonizing conflict.
'You can't just walk away, Noel,' she choked out, a single tear tracing a path through the bruising on her cheek. 'They own you. They've documented every breath you take. If you leave with me now, they'll say I kidnapped you. They'll say I'm the one spiraling. They'll use this to destroy you.'
'Let them try,' Noel countered, his fingers finally brushing hers. 'I'd rather be destroyed with you than "safe" without you.'
