Part 57
20:25, 17 March 2026The next forty-eight hours were a study in calculated silence. Noel's order was absolute: digital blackout. No texts, no calls, not even a "thinking of you" that could be intercepted by a server or a 'rat' with a passcode.
Caroline checked herself into a nondescript boutique hotel under a shell name, while Noel remained in the eye of the storm, playing the part of the arrogant rock star for any lenses trailing him. He looked 'normal', so the tabloids remained unaware he was actually vibrating with a suppressed, protective rage.
For Caroline, the two days in limbo were the longest of her life. She stared at the walls of her room, the bruise on her face growing into a black and blue eye and a yellowish ache on her cheek, while the silence of her phone felt like a physical weight. Every time it vibrated with a news alert, her heart hammered against her ribs, waiting for the grainy footage of a video or picture where she was standing a tad bit too close to Noel.
But the leak didn't come. Not yet.
The reunion happened in the bowels of the stage at Heaton Park, three hours before soundcheck.
Noel was standing by the catering table, a plastic cup of black coffee in his hand, looking like he hadn't slept since London. When the heavy fire door creaked open and Caroline walked in, flanked by a grumpy-looking Liam, Noel's posture didn't just change, it snapped into alignment.
He didn't rush to her. He so wanted to but couldn't. There were roadies drifting past with flight cases and security guards with wandering eyes.
'You're late,' Noel said, his voice raspy, though his eyes were scanning her face with a frantic, silent intensity, checking the mark on her cheek and her black eye.
'Traffic on the M6,' Caroline replied, her voice steadier than she felt. She stayed three feet away, playing the professional PA to perfection, even as her pulse thrummed in her throat. 'I have the updated guest list and the rider amendments for these five Manchester nights.'
Noel didn't even look at the paperwork she held out. His eyes were glued to the dark, mottled skin around her eye, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle pulsed in his temple. To anyone else, he looked like a boss annoyed by a delay; to Caroline, he looked like he was mourning every inch of her pain he hadn't been there to soothe.
'The M6 is a car park. Always is,' Noel muttered, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped just a fraction closer, not enough to break the professional barrier, but enough for her to catch the scent of his cologne over the smell of diesel and damp grass. He didn't reach out to touch the bruise, but the way his gaze lingered on it was almost a physical contact.
'And Brian?' he asked suddenly, his voice raspy and low, his eyes flashing with a cold, sharp intent. 'Where's that rat hiding?'
Caroline didn't flinch. She met his gaze with a steady, hard-won calm that made the black and blue around her eye look like war paint rather than an injury. 'Fired,' she replied, her voice clipped and final. 'I handled it. He's gone, Noel. Collected his things and vanished before we even hit the motorway.'
Noel's chest expanded with a long, slow breath, a flicker of grim satisfaction crossing his face. 'Good. Should've thrown him out of the moving van,' he muttered. He looked toward the stage where the crew was testing the light rig, the sudden strobe of white light making him squint
He turned back to her, his gaze dropping from the lights to the mottled skin of her face. The professional mask he usually wore around the crew slipped for a fraction of a second, replaced by a raw, jagged concern.
'That eye, Caro,' he said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly rasp that was for her ears only. He stepped an inch closer, his hand twitching at his side as if fighting the urge to reach out and tilt her chin toward the light. 'Is it looking as fuckin' painful as it feels? Because it looks like you've gone twelve rounds with a brick wall.'
Caroline didn't flinch, though the dull throb behind her temple spiked at the mention of it. 'It's quite painful, yes.'
Noel let out a short, breathy scoff, his eyes searching hers with a frantic, silent intensity. 'Don't give me that "tough professional" shite. Not today.' He looked at the purple swelling, his jaw working as if he were physically swallowing his anger. 'If the tabloids pick up on it, and they will, then the lawyers will make sure the tabloids end up at her doorstep, she's gone much too far'
He cut himself off, his frustration hanging heavy in the damp Manchester air. He took a final, sharp breath and straightened his jacket, the rock star persona snapping back into place as a roadie wandered past with a rack of guitars.
'Get the guest list sorted,' he commanded, though his eyes remained soft. 'Put the "VIPs" as far from the stage as possible. I don't want any vultures near the front.' He paused, his voice barely a breath. 'And Caroline? Stay in my sight-line from the wings tonight. I need to know you're there.'
Caroline nodded, the movement sending a dull spike of heat through her temple. 'I'll be there. Right where I always am.'
She turned to head toward the production office, the weight of the guest list in her hand a familiar, grounding burden. Behind her, she heard the heavy thwack of Noel's lighter as he sparked a cigarette, the sharp scent of tobacco cutting through the Manchester mist. He didn't move until she was out of sight; he just stood there, a solitary figure, watching the space where she'd been standing as if he could still see the ghost of her injury in the air.
The next few hours were a blur of high-stakes logistics. Heaton Park was transforming into a living, breathing beast. Security was tightened at every checkpoint, and Caroline personally vetted every name on the list, moving anyone with even a vague connection to Noel's ex-wife or the "inner circle" of British tabloids to the furthest reaches of the hospitality tents.
As the sun began to dip, casting long, bruised shadows across the grass that mirrored the marks on her face, the roar of eighty thousand fans began to rise like a physical tide.
From the shadows of the stage wings, Caroline watched Noel and Liam walk up to the back of the stage. He looked different tonight. There was no casual swagger, no playful banter with the roadies. He looked like a man going into a fight he intended to win.
Just before he stepped into the blinding white glow of the spotlights, he turned his head. His eyes found hers in the darkness of the wings, a precise, unwavering lock. He didn't smile. He just took a deep breath to calm his nerves and gave a single, imperceptible nod, before he stepped out hand in hand with Liam into the roar.
The first chord of the opening song didn't just play; it exploded. It was louder, angrier, and more precise than anything they'd done in Cardiff. Noel wasn't just playing for the fans; he was playing a warning to anyone holding a camera or a secret.
The bass from "Hello" vibrated through the metal gantry of the stage, a physical force that made her stomach cling to her spine. Out there, under the blinding white spotlights of Heaton Park, the Gallagher brothers were once again unified, their voices blending in a rare, perfect harmony that held eighty thousand people breathless.
Caroline stood in the shadows of the wings, her eyes locked on Noel. He was playing with a jagged, protective energy, his gaze snapping toward her position every few bars to ensure she was still there.
Then, a heavy hand landed on her shoulder.
It was Pete, one of the veteran backline roadies who had been with the band since the nineties. He looked pale, his face set in a grimace as he leaned in to shout over the roar.
'Caro,' he hollered, pulling her further into the dark pocket behind the speaker stacks. 'There's a suit at the stage door. Says his name's Henderson. He's asking for you, says he's representing Sara and she is with him.'
Caroline's blood turned to ice. She instinctively touched the dark, mottled skin around her eye, the pulse there throbbing in time with the drums.
'He's got a folder full of statements, love,' Pete added, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. 'He's telling security that Sara's filed a report in London. She's claiming you attacked her. She's denying she even touched you.'
Caroline felt a surge of nauseating disbelief. 'She's denying it? What?, how did they even get in?'
'Well, she's got the paperwork saying otherwise,' Pete muttered, glancing nervously toward the stage where Noel was currently mid-solo, his head thrown back, oblivious to the legal ambush happening twenty yards away. 'The lawyer is telling everyone your black eye is a "self-inflicted stunt" to frame her. He's threatening to bring the Manchester police onto the site to arrest you for assault and filing a false report if you don't sign an acknowledgment of her "cease and desist" right now.'
Caroline looked at the stage. Liam was gripped to the microphone, his tambourine jangling, and Noel was lost in the music. She was completely on her own. She saw Noel's eyes find her again from across the stage, a quick, questioning frown. He saw Pete talking to her. He knew something was wrong.
She swallowed the bitter taste of adrenaline and straightened her back, the pain in her face hardening into a cold, sharp resolve.
'Bring them to the production trailer, Pete,' she said, her voice like flint. 'And tell him if he doesn't have a very good explanation for why he's harassing a victim of assault during a show, I'll have the site security remove them.'
Caroline knew she couldn't just vanish. Noel's eyes were already darting toward the wings every few bars, his protective instinct hummed louder than the monitors. If she disappeared without a word, he'd drop his guitar and walk off stage to find her.
She stepped toward the monitor desk and tapped on her headset to unmute so she could directly talk to Noel's in-ear monitors. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her voice remained a cool, professional silk.
'Noel, it's me. All is fine' she murmured, her voice blooming inside his head over the roar of the crowd. 'There's a small credential issue at the gate. Professional nonsense. I'm handling it. Look at the front row, not at me. I'll be back asap. Stay focused, Gallagher.'
On stage, she saw Noel's head snap toward the wings. He missed a sixteenth note, his jaw tightening as he searched the shadows for her. She stepped just far enough into the light for him to see her silhouette, gave him a sharp, grounding nod, and then turned on her heel.
She followed Pete through the labyrinth of flight cases and security barriers toward the VIP entrance. The Manchester air was cold and damp, a sharp contrast to the heat of the stage.
There, standing under the harsh amber glow of the perimeter lights, was Sara. She looked immaculate, not a hair out of place, flanked by a man in a charcoal suit holding a leather briefcase.
'Caroline,' the lawyer started, his voice dripping with practiced condescension as she approached. 'I'm Mr. Henderson. We're here to serve a formal denial of...'
'It's Miss Di Benedetto to you and save your breath,' Caroline interrupted, stepping right into his personal space. She didn't hide her face; she tilted her head so the amber light hit the black and purple bruising around her eye, making it look like a jagged crater on her skin. She looked directly at Sara, who didn't flinch, her expression one of bored aristocratic disdain.
'You're telling people I did this to myself, Sara?' Caroline asked, her voice dangerously low. 'In Noel's home city? While he's five hundred yards away playing to eighty thousand people who would tear this fence down if they knew you were standing here harassing his staff?'
'It's a fabrication, Caroline,' Sara said, her voice cool and clipped. 'A desperate attempt by a 'PA' who overstepped her bounds to gain sympathy from a man who is clearly vulnerable.'
The lawyer stepped forward, holding out a document. 'My client is prepared to file a counter-suit for defamation and physical assault. If you don't sign this acknowledgment of your false statement and leave the site immediately, the GMP officers at the main gate will be invited in to escort you out in handcuffs.'
Caroline didn't look at the paper. She didn't even look at the lawyer. She kept her eyes locked on Sara, whose expression of bored disdain was starting to flicker under the harsh, orange glow of the security lights.
'You think you're the only one who knows how to use a camera, Sara?' Caroline asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy calm that cut through the distant roar of Cigarettes & Alcohol.
The lawyer scoffed. 'And may I ask what you are referring to..?'
'I'm referring to the fact that we were in Liam's house when Sara hit me, he has some cameras installed throughout his house' Caroline interrupted, stepping even closer until she was inches from Sara's face. 'The 360-degree cameras on the frontdoor recorded you entering his house without being invited. I have you on 4K video, from three different angles,' she bluffed.
She saw the blood drain from Sara's face. The lawyer's hand, holding the 'cease and desist', wavered.
'And as for the police?' Caroline continued, gesturing to the massive, black-clad security detail hovering just behind her. 'This is a private event. You are currently trespassing on a site where I am the authorized representative of the headliner. If you don't turn around and walk out of that gate in the next thirty seconds, I won't just have you removed. I'll hand that drive to the GMP officers at the front gate and file a report for aggravated assault and witness intimidation.'
She leaned in, her bruised eye inches from Sara's. 'Noel is on that stage right now, reclaiming his life. If you think for one second I'm going to let you ruin his first night home with a stack of lies, you've severely underestimated my role as his PA and Tour Manager.'
The lawyer looked at Sara. The silence between them was heavy, broken only by the deafening cheer of eighty thousand people as the song ended in the distance.
'We're leaving,' Sara hissed, her voice trembling with a mix of fury and genuine fear. She turned on her heel, her designer heels clicking sharply on the gravel as she retreated toward the black SUV waiting at the perimeter.
Caroline watched them go until the taillights disappeared into the Manchester mist. Her heart was thundering, her vision swimming from the adrenaline and the ache in her head. She took a shaky breath, smoothed her hair, and pressed the talkback mic again.
'Gate's clear, Noel,' she whispered into his ear, just as he was tuning his guitar for the next track. 'I'll back in the wings in a few minutes.'
On stage, she saw Noel's shoulders visibly drop. He didn't look over, but he leaned into the microphone with a smirk that could light up the whole park.
'This next one...' he began, his rasp deeper, more intimate than before. He paused, a ghost of a smirk playing on his lips, though his eyes remained fierce. 'is for a certain someone. Someone who's been standing in the shadows tonight, taking the hits so I don't have to.'
A confused, curious murmur rippled through the front rows, but Noel didn't break his gaze from the wings.
'She knows who she is,' he continued, his voice dropping to a low, vibrating growl. 'She's the toughest person in this park tonight, and she's the only reason I'm still standing on this stage. This is for her.'
He didn't say her name. He didn't have to. The way he looked at that dark corner of the stage told the story better than any tabloid ever could.
He struck the opening G-chord of "Slide Away," the sound massive and soulful, echoing across the fields of Heaton Park. As the lyrics started, Slide away, and give it all you've got.., Caroline felt a lump form in her throat that had nothing to do with the dust or the smoke.
From the shadows, she watched them sing every word directly to her, a public declaration wrapped in a private melody. For the first time since London, the ache in her eye didn't feel like a mark of shame; it felt like a badge of honor. She had to use all of her willpower to not storm onto that stage and kiss the living daylights out of him.
