Part 56

20:45, 16 March 2026

The dinner was a masterclass in psychological warfare, conducted in an almost suffocating silence that only the children were oblivious to. Caroline sat at the table, her back straight, her professional mask fused to her face. She had applied a quick layer of concealer in the guest bathroom, but it did little to hide the angry, rhythmic throbbing of her cheek or the way the skin was beginning to puff around her eye.

Noel was a live wire. He barely ate; he just seemed to shove his food around his plate, his fork scraping against the ceramic with a screeching sound that made everyone wince. When Sonny asked a simple question about the tour bus, Noel snapped.

'For God's sake, Sonny, will you just eat your dinner!? I've told you a thousand times how the logistics work!'

The table went dead quiet. Sonny flinched, his bottom lip trembling as he looked down at his plate. Caroline reached out, her arm gently covering the boy's shoulders, a silent anchor in the storm. She didn't look at Noel, she just leaned her head against the boy's head and whispered 'Daddy is a little grumpy today, don't mind him, would you like to help me next Saturday? You get to boss everyone of the crew around and even your Daddy, you'll even get your own headset!'; Sonny's little face lit up instantly 'Really?? I would love that, thank you Caro, you're the bestest ever' the boy's arms instantly wrapped around her neck, while he did, she raised her eyebrows at Noel to urge him to not upset his son any further.

After thirty minutes of agonizing tension, Liam finally had enough. He cleared his throat, the sound echoing around the deck, and stood up. 'Right, you lot. Into the den. There's a box of Magnums in the freezer with your names on them. Go.'

The boys didn't need to be told twice. They scrambled out of their chairs, the heavy thud of their retreating footsteps the only energetic thing left in the house.

As the sliding window clicked shut, Liam leaned back, his eyes darting from the vivid bruise on Caroline's face to the vibrating fury in his brother's posture.

'Right,' Liam said, his voice dropping the playful edge. 'We've played house for half an hour. Now, what the hell are we doing about her? Because Sara didn't just cross a line, Noel. She burned the bridge and danced on the ashes. Next time she shows her face around here, I'm calling the police'.

Noel finally looked up, his eyes bloodshot with suppressed rage. 'I'm going to ruin her,' he rasped, his voice a low, dangerous vibration. 'I'm calling the lawyers. I'm changing the locks. I'm filing for an emergency hearing.'

'And what about the press?' Liam countered, leaning forward. 'Think, Noel. We're in Manchester in three days. Heaton Park. It's the biggest homecoming of our career. If Caro walks onto that site, or even into a hotel lobby, with a face like that...' He gestured toward Caroline's jaw. 'The paps aren't going to ask for a police report on Sara. They're going to see a Gallagher and a woman with a black eye, and they're going to run the headline they've been waiting twenty years to write.'

Noel slammed his hand onto the table, the glasses rattling. 'I didn't fucking touch her! Everyone knows that!'

'Doesn't matter what they know, it's what it looks like,' Liam snapped back. 'If she's seen with you looking like that, they'll say you did it. They'll ruin the tour, they'll ruin your reputation, and they'll make her life a living hell.'

Caroline took a slow, deliberate sip of her water, the cold liquid a sharp contrast to the fire in her face. She looked at Noel, her gaze steady despite the suffocating silence that had settled over them again.

'I'm not letting them spin this, Caroline. I'm not,' Noel said, his voice dropping into a low, jagged register. 'I'll have the lawyers draft a statement tonight. Short, clinical, and undeniable. "A private domestic incident occurred involving a former partner and a member of the tour staff." We name Sara. We name the assault. We make it clear she's been served with a restraining order.'

Liam raised an eyebrow, his cynicism momentarily paused. 'Naming her in a press release? That's the nuclear option, kid. You're sure?'

'She crossed the line when she put her hands on her,' Noel snapped, his eyes flashing toward Caroline with an intensity that made her breath hitch. 'I don't care about the fallout for Sara anymore. She's done. But...Caro, she's my..'

He paused, the words caught in his throat. He looked at Caroline, really looked at her, beyond the bruise and the swelling. The raw desperation in his eyes shifted into something far more dangerous and far more honest.

Liam leaned back, and narrowed his eyes, shifting his gaze between Noel's protective hovering and the way Caroline was subtly leaning into Noel's space, even through her pain.

'Hold on a minute,' Liam said, his voice dropping the sharp, mocking edge for something much heavier. He looked directly at Noel, then at Caroline, his finger pointing between them. 'Let's stop dancing around the handbag, shall we? What the hell is actually going on here? Are you two an item? Is this more than just schedules and fuckin' spreadsheets?'

Noel froze, his hand hovering near Caroline's shoulder. He looked at her, a silent question in his eyes, his usual quick-witted defenses failing him. Caroline felt the heat rise in her neck, competing with the throb of her bruise. She gave a microscopic nod.

'Yes,' Noel muttered, his voice uncharacteristically shy, rubbing the back of his neck. 'it's only been 2 days or so..'

Liam let out a loud, barking laugh and slammed his hands on the table. 'I knew it! I fuckin' knew it!' He turned his head toward the kitchen door. 'Debbie! Come quick! I told you! Pay up, you owe me a tenner!'

Debbie appeared in the doorway, a wide, knowing grin spreading across her face as she looked at the two of them. 'Oh, thank God,' she breathed, 'we've been placing bets on when you two would finally stop pretending. You're exactly what he needs, Caro.'

For a fleeting second, the heavy gloom of the evening lifted. But the grin on Liam's face faded as quickly as it had appeared, replaced by a grim, street-smart sobriety.

'Right, but let's not pop the champagne just yet..,' Liam snapped, leaning forward again, his eyes drilling into Noel's. 'You do realize that from now on, you two have to be deadly professional. No lingering looks, no touching, no "accidentally" staying in the same suite in Manchester. And you can't tell anyone, especially not the kids..'

He pointed at the bruise on Caroline's face. 'Sara is a lot of things, but she's not stupid. You've heard her, She's been alluding to this for a while now, dropping hints to the lawyers that you were "playing house" with the help. If she gets one photo, one single frame of you two looking like a couple, she will use it as a nuclear warhead in the divorce settlement.'

Debbie nodded, her expression turning serious. 'He's right, Noel. She'll paint Caroline as the villain to get a bigger slice of the pie and to mess with the custody. You have to act like she's just the PA who got caught in the crossfire of a crazy ex-wife. If you show any affection, you're handing Sara the keys to your bank account and your kids.'

Noel's grip tightened on the edge of the table. The joy of finally being "out" to his family was instantly crushed by the weight of the legal battle ahead.

The silence that followed Liam's warning was heavy, Caroline looked at Noel, really looked at him, and saw the flicker of sheer terror in his eyes at the mention of the kids. The joy of their "two days" was a fragile thing, and she realized in that moment that she was the glass house he couldn't afford to live in.

'I'm resigning,' Caroline said. Her voice was thin but steady, cutting through the gentle evening air.

Noel's head snapped toward her, his brow furrowed in immediate protest. 'Like hell you are. Caro, don't be daft, we've just started a world tour.. Manchester is in 3 days'

'Liam's right. Sara isn't just angry; she's calculating. If I stay on the payroll, if I'm in the same hotels, the same cars, the same backstage corridors... I'm not just your PA anymore. I'm 'Exhibit A'.'

Liam let out a slow, appreciative whistle. 'She's smarter than you, kid. Always has been.'

'Shut it, Liam,' Noel hissed, his face pale. He turned back to Caroline, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. 'I'm not letting her win. I'm not letting her take you away from this, from me, just because she threw a punch she couldn't land.'

'She already landed it, Noel,' Caroline said, gesturing to her bruised face. 'But if I stay, she lands the next one on your relationship with your children. I won't be the reason you lose time with them. I won't be the 'home-wrecker' in a Daily Mail headline before we've even had a proper first date.'

Noel looked like he'd been struck. The defiance that usually defined him was buckling under the weight of her logic. 'So what?' Noel asked, his voice cracking. 'You just..walk away?'

'I..I think I have to, Noel,' she whispered, her voice barely audible and heavy with a suffocating sense of guilt. She couldn't bring herself to meet his eyes. 'Look at what happens just because I exist near you. I'm the reason she has ammunition. I'm the leak in your defense.'

She swallowed hard, 'If I stay, I'm the one opening the door for her to take everything. The tour, the money, the houses..the kids. How can I sit here and pretend I'm helping you, when I'm actually the one pushing you toward the edge?'

Noel didn't just shake his head; he recoiled as if the very idea of her leaving was a physical blow. 'No,' he said, the word dropping like a lead weight. 'No. Absolutely fuckin' not. You don't get to do that, Caroline. You don't get to be the one who pays for her being a headcase.'

'Listen to me Noel, it's about the kids,' Caroline whispered, her voice trembling. 'If I stay on the tour, if I'm in the next hotel suite..then..'

'Then we get two suites! We get 5 whole fuckin' floors between us if that's what it takes!' Noel started to raise his voice, ignoring Liam's warning grunt.. 'We don't hide. We don't cower. You're my PA. You're the best at what you do, and you're a victim of a physical attack. We stand by that. We don't blink.'

Caroline's phone buzzed on the table, the sharp vibration cutting through Noel's shouting like a knife. She flinched, her eyes darting to the screen.

It was an unknown number. Just a link and a single sentence: 'Thought you'd like to see the view from the front seat.'

With trembling fingers, she tapped the link. Her breath hitched, and the blood drained from her face so quickly that even the dark bruise seemed to stand out in stark, violent relief. It was a video file. Grainy, but unmistakable.

It was footage from inside the van from a few days ago. It showed the two of them in the back, the interior bathed in the dim amber glow of streetlights. It captured the exact moment Noel had reached for her hand, the quiet, private murmur of their first real conversation. The angle was perfect, high-definition, clear audio, and captured by the dashcam rigged to face the passengers.

'Caro?' Noel's voice was suddenly quiet, his anger replaced by a cold, rising dread. 'What is it?'

She didn't speak. She simply turned the phone toward him.

Noel stared at the screen, watching himself fall for her all over again in digital playback. He watched the intimacy he thought was theirs alone being broadcast back to them through a stranger's lens.

'It's Brian..,' Caroline whispered, her voice hollow. 'The driver. He wasn't just driving us, Noel. He was filming us. He's been her eyes the whole time.'

Liam leaned over, squinting at the grainy footage with a grimace. 'That sneaky little rat,' he muttered, a dangerous low whistle escaping his teeth. He looked at Noel, then at Caroline's pale face. 'Tell me he didn't get anything more than hand-holding, Noel. Please tell me he didn't film you two shagging..because if there's a 'Director's Cut' of that, you can give her the house and kids right now on a silver platter.'

Noel didn't flinch. He met Liam's eyes with a blunt, quiet honesty that cut through the tension. 'Of course not,' he snapped, though his voice lacked its usual bite. 'We've barely had the privacy to even bloody kiss, let alone anything else.'

Seeing the despair and shock in Caro's eyes, he nodded at her to follow him inside so they could have some privacy.

Noel closed the kitchen door behind her. The stressful energy from the deck vanished, replaced by a devastatingly soft warmth. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her tightly against him, and rested his forehead against hers.

'Listen to me,' he whispered, his voice a low, gravelly hum that vibrated against her skin. 'I know you're scared. I know this feels like the walls are closing in. But I'm not letting you go. I'll fire the entire transport crew tonight if I have to. I'll hire a fleet of strangers who don't know a Gallagher from a hole in the wall.'

He reached up, letting his fingers run through her long, thick hair.

'I'm longing for you, Caro. Properly,' he murmured, his eyes searching hers in the dim light. 'I want nothing more than to take you away from all of this, no cameras, no lawyers, just a real night where we can be together without looking over our shoulder. But we'll have to be smarter than her.'

He leaned in, kissing her with a slow, lingering tenderness that felt like a vow. It wasn't the kiss of a man in a hurry; it was the kiss of a man who was planning for the long haul. When he pulled back, his lips stayed brushed against hers as he spoke.

'In Manchester, we're going to be the coldest badasses Sara has ever seen. I'll be your 'Mr. Gallagher again, and you're the most professional, untouchable Tour Manager in the business. We don't look at each other. We don't touch. We talk about decibels, stage times, and logistics. We give soon-to-be-ex wifey-dearest and her cameras absolutely nothing but ice.'

Noel pulled back just a bit, his eyes dark with a mixture of adoration and calculated resolve. He searched her face, his hands still tangled in her hair as if anchoring her to the spot.

'Do you think you can do that?' he asked, his voice dropping to a rough, private murmur. 'Can you stand there and treat me like I'm just another demanding rockstar who's more trouble than he's worth? Because I'm going to have to be a right bastard to make them believe it.'

Caroline didn't blink. Despite the bruise and the exhaustion, a familiar, sharp spark returned to her eyes. A small, knowing smirk tugged at the corner of her mouth, the first sign of the "ice queen" Sara was about to meet.

'You mean like I've been doing for years?' she replied with a dry, effortless wit. 'Dealing with your tantrums, your rider demands, and your ego? Please, Noel. Acting like I can't stand the sight of you is the easiest part of my job description.'

Noel let out a short, surprised huff of a laugh, his forehead dropping back against hers in relief. 'Fair point,' he muttered, a ghost of a grin playing on his lips. 'I suppose I walked right into that one, didn't I?'

'You did,' she whispered, her tone softening just for a second before she straightened her shoulders, mentally pulling the professional mask back into place. 'But don't get too comfortable, Mr. Gallagher. Starting tomorrow morning, if you so much as breathe in my direction without a scheduled meeting, I'm going to make your life a living hell for the cameras.'

'I look forward to it,' Noel replied, his voice thick with a promise that had nothing to do with logistics. He looked at her, his gaze dropping from her defiant eyes to her lips, and the professional distance he had just preached melted away.

Without another word, he leaned in and sealed their pact with a kiss that was anything but professional. It was a deep, possessive claim that stole the breath from her lungs and blurred the world outside the kitchen door.

It was a kiss that tasted of promises and forbidden longing, a final moment of absolute truth before they had to put on their masks.
