Part 52

18:05, 12 March 2026

The word fight didn't just hang in the air; it detonated, sending a physical jolt through Caroline's chest. For years, she had been a one-woman army, fighting the tabloids, managing Noel's erratic storms, managing the epic fight between him and his brother, and clawing her way out of the suffocating, pitch-black memory of Rob. To have Noel, the man who usually demanded the world bend to his whims, offer to be her shield was a shift so seismic it felt like the very floorboards beneath them were liquifying.

'You'd really do that?' she whispered, her eyes snapping open, dark and dilated as they searched his. 'You'd fire the lot of them? Even if it makes the divorce a bloodbath? Even if she tries to ruin you?'

Noel didn't flinch. The protective fire in his gaze was absolute, a hard, diamond-bright certainty that scorched right through his usual cynicism.

'I'd burn the whole fucking world down if that meant you could walk through a room without feeling like a target,' he growled, his voice dropping to a low, jagged rumble that vibrated against her skin. 'The houses, the money, the lawyers... it's all just background noise, Caro. You're the only thing in my life that's real. If I have to spend every penny I've ever earned to keep her venom away from you, I'll consider it the best deal I've ever signed.'

He moved that final, agonizing inch. His nose brushed hers, and the scent of him, well-worn leather, tobacco, and the sharp, metallic tang of stage adrenaline, wrapped around her senses, more intoxicating than any drink. The air between them was so thick with static it felt like it might spontaneously combust.

'Decide, Caro,' he murmured, his lips so close she could feel the heat and the vibration of every syllable. 'Tell me to stay. Tell me you believe me, and I'll never let her, or him, or anyone else touch a hair on your head again.'

The weight of Sara's lies, the legal threats, the shadows of the past, it all felt flimsy, like scorched paper caught in a gale. Caroline reached up, her fingers finally snapping shut around his wrists. She wasn't pushing him away; she was anchoring herself to the only solid thing she had left. She could feel his pulse jumping under his skin, a frantic, electric rhythm that matched the hammering of her own heart.

'Stay,' she breathed, the word part-surrender, part-feral command.

Noel didn't wait for the echo. He closed the gap with a desperate hunger that felt like it had been centuries in the making. It wasn't the practiced kiss of a rockstar; it was the raw, violent collision of a man who had finally found the only thing in the world worth saving.

His mouth crashed against hers, tasting of salt and salvation, and for the first time since that night, the noise in her head stopped. There was only Noel, only the heat, and the electric realization that the war was over because he was fighting it for her.

He pulled her flush against him, his hands possessive and frantic as they slid under the soft fabric of her hoodie, his palms searing against the skin of her back. The electricity wasn't just a spark anymore; it was a wildfire. He kissed her with a hunger that she had never felt in her life. The taste of him, salt, leather, and pure surrender, was the only thing Caroline could cling to as the world tilted.

His lips moved to her jawline, his breath hot and ragged against her ear. 'Only you, Caro,' he rasped, his voice a raw, low rumble that vibrated through her very core. 'Just you. It's always been you.'

His hand slid lower, his fingers finding the small of her back, and for a heartbeat, Caroline let herself be swept away by the tidal wave. The passion was so visceral, so electric, that the floor felt like it had dropped away. But as his lips found the sensitive hollow of her throat, a jagged image flashed through her mind, dousing the flames with ice-cold reality.

The kids..The wreckage a scorched-earth divorce leaves behind.

'Noel..wait,' she choked out, her voice strangled by a mix of longing and sudden, sobering fear. She pushed back against his shoulders, gentle but firm.

Noel stopped instantly, his forehead resting against hers, his chest heaving. The hunger in his eyes was still there, wild and untamed, but tempered by a pained confusion. 'What? What's wrong?'

'The kids,' she whispered, her eyes wide and shimmering with unshed tears. 'They're already going through a nightmare, Noel. Your divorce...their mother's lies...we talked about this before..if we do this now, if we cross this line while the lawyers are still throwing knives, your children are the ones who'll bleed. I can't be the reason their world shatters even further. Not like this.'

Noel closed his eyes, a tortured grimace crossing his face. He knew she was right. The raw honesty of her words cut through the fog of his passion. He wanted her more than his next breath, but he loved his children with that same, all-consuming intensity. He couldn't build their happiness on the ruins of his children's peace.

He leaned in to kiss her one last time, still hungrily, but with a lingering, tragic promise, just as he reached for her lips..

Bzzz. Bzzz.

On the carpet, his phone began to vibrate like a wounded animal. LIAM.

A split second later, Caroline's phone, still lying near her on the rug, erupted in a frantic, neon glow that sliced through the darkness.

LIAM.

The timing was cruel, almost hilarious if it weren't so weighted. The world outside, in the form of a loud-mouthed, worried, and likely very drunk Liam Gallagher, was battering down their digital door.

'That cunt has absolutely no sense of timing,' Noel growled against her lips, though he didn't move to answer.

The vibrating duet on the carpet acted like a bucket of ice water thrown over a raging fire. The harsh, pulsing light from the screens sliced through the intimacy of the room, a raw reminder that they weren't alone in the world.

Noel kept his forehead pressed against hers, his breath still heavy and ragged. He squeezed his eyes shut, his fingers still knotted firmly in the fabric of her hoodie, as if he were terrified that reality would pull her away the moment he let go.

'that was,' he rasped, more to himself than to her. 'fire.. Caro.'

Caroline nodded fiercely. The heat radiating between them was still overwhelming, a magnetic pull begging her to ignore the phones, but the thought of his children held her steady on the ground. She placed her hands over his, gently forcing him to loosen his grip.

'We need to...we need to cool this down,' she managed, her voice still husky from the passion of a moment ago. 'You know what he's like. If we don't answer, he'll be at this door with security in five minutes.'

Noel let out a deep, tortured exhale and slowly pulled back. The physical distance felt like a wound being reopened. He sat up on the carpet, his hair disheveled, his lips still flushed from their kiss. He looked at his vibrating phone, LIAM was still stubbornly lighting up the room, and then back at her.

'He's always had a fucking talent for being a twat at exactly the wrong moment,' Noel muttered, running a trembling hand through his hair. He took a lungful of air, trying to pull his "Chief" mask back into place, but his eyes betrayed the raw vulnerability underneath.

Caroline wiped the last traces of tears and heat from her cheeks with the palm of her hand. She could still feel the electricity humming under her skin, a dangerous longing waiting for a fresh spark.

'Go back to your room, Noel,' she said softly, her voice steadier now. 'We can't do this...not tonight anyway. Not with those lawyers and those lies still hanging in the air. Your kids deserve better. We deserve better than to do this in the shadow of a divorce.'

Noel looked at her for a long beat, his gaze filled with admiration and an almost unbearable regret. He knew she was the wisest of the two. He leaned forward and gave her one last, brief kiss on her forehead, suppressing his hunger for her this time.

'I'll fix it,' he promised, his voice low and resolute. 'The lawyers, the press, the whole fucking lot. I'll clear the way, Caro. So there's nothing left standing between us, but don't tell me I don't get to do all the dirty things to you that I have in mind, for months or probably a year, you could never be so cruel..' he licked his lips before he gave her a dirty smirk.

He let out a short, dark laugh that didn't reach his eyes. 'The press? They'll hunt me. The lawyers? They'll try to bleed me dry. But if you think for one second I'm going to spend the next twelve months just shaking your hand at soundchecks or watching you from across a room.. you're mad.'

He leaned his head against the doorframe, his gaze roaming over her, the messy hair, the flushed skin, the oversized hoodie.

'I'll do the meetings. I'll sign every soul-crushing piece of paper they shove under my nose. I'll even play nice with the press until there's nothing left for them to gossip about,' he muttered, a dark, manic glint in his eyes.

'But let's be fucking real for a second, Caro. I'm sat here telling you I'll wait a year, but I've got the self-control of a toddler in a sweet shop. Don't expect me to be some noble martyr standing on the sidelines. If you think I can spend twelve months just "discussing the weather" with you while those lawyers bicker over who gets the sodding toaster, you're mental.'

He let out a short, jagged laugh, his gaze dropping to her lips before snapping back up.

'I'll clear the path, yeah. I'll get us to the finish line. But don't act surprised when I've got my hands up your skirt in the back of a black cab five minutes after the final decree is signed. Actually, make that five seconds. I'm not built for pining, Caro. It's exhausting. I've got a list of dirty things to do to you that's longer than the Be Here Now tracklist, and quite frankly? I'm already losing my mind just thinking about the first ten minutes.'

He groaned, rubbing a hand over his face as his phone started buzzing again.

'Look at that. Liam again. The universe really is a cosmic comedian, isn't it? I don't want to but I better go. Before I decide that the lawyers can go to hell and I just lock us in here until 2027.'

'I'll answer,' she whispered, her voice finally finding its professional gravel, though her lips still felt swollen from his kiss. 'Go, Noel. Before he decides to do a floor-by-floor sweep of the hotel.'

'I'm going,' he muttered, finally reaching for the handle. 'But I'm not surviving a year of this. I'm barely surviving the walk to the elevator.'

Noel quickly ran over to her to steal another overheated kiss from her lips and then dragged himself back to the door before he slipped out into the hallway. The click of the door closing was the loudest sound in the world.

She slid her thumb across the screen.

'Liam,' she said, her voice remarkably steady for a woman whose world had just been rebuilt and dismantled in the span of an hour.

'Fucking hell, Caro!' Liam's voice exploded through the speaker, raw with a mix of relief and drunken irritation. 'I've been calling you for twenty minutes! And that prick Noel isn't answering his phone either. I thought... I don't know what I thought. I saw you leave and then he vanished and I thought the whole tour was going up in flames.'

Caroline closed her eyes, leaning her head against the headboard. 'I'm fine, Liam. I just needed to breathe. And Noel...he's probably just brooding in his room. You know how he gets after a big show.' A little smile formed around her lips, knowing that his brother had done anything but brooding in his room.

Liam grumbled, though his tone had softened. 'Listen...you sure you're alright? You didn't look good, man. Backstage. Like you were seeing things.'

Caroline looked down at the carpet where she and Noel had just been sitting. 'I'm sure,' she said, and for the first time, she meant it. 'Go back to the party, Liam. Drink a Guinness for me. I'll see you at the lobby tomorrow.'

"Right..5 days off.. Don't be late or I'm starting the van without you,' Liam joked, his bravado returning now that he knew she was safe. 'Night, sweetheart'

'Night, Liam.' she disconnected the call and let herself finally fall on the bed with a frustrated growl. She clearly needed him as much as he needed her.

The grey Welsh morning was unforgiving. Caroline stood by the sliding door of the black Mercedes van, her sunglasses pushed firmly up her nose to hide the evidence of a sleepless night.

The door slid open, revealing the luxurious but rather cramped interior. Liam and Debbie were already sprawled across the back seats, surrounded by bags and half-empty water bottles. Liam looked annoyingly alert for someone who'd been on the Guinness until 3 AM, his parka zipped to his chin.

'There she is,' Liam called out, kicking the back of the empty seat in front of him. 'Get in, Caro, we're on a clock.'

Caroline climbed in, and her breath hitched. Noel was already seated on the middle row, sunk deep into the leather. He was wearing his shades and didn't look up as she sat down on the other side of his row.

The driver pulled away, the tires hissing against the wet Cardiff streets.

'So,' Liam started from the back, suspicious of his brother and his PA in front of him, who were awfully quiet after days filled with drama where they couldn't even be in the same room. 'Did we all sleep well?' He threw a pointed look at the back of Noel's head. 'You're very quiet, Noel. Lost your voice?'

Noel didn't move, but his voice was a low, dangerous rumble. 'I'm trying to work, Liam. Something you should try instead of making a constant fucking racket.'

'Work? It's seven in the morning! We've got five days off. I'm going home, getting a proper fry-up, and getting into my own bed,' Liam rattled on. 'But you... you look like you've been through a hedge backwards. What was it last night, then?'

'I told you,' Noel growled back at Liam, 'Solicitors. Paperwork. It never fucking ends.'

'Boring,' Liam concluded, winking at Debbie.

Noel leaned back in his seat, sunglasses on despite being inside, staring at a stack of legal documents. He'd been on the same page for forty miles. His mind was stuck in a loop, the carpet, the smell of her skin, the way she'd whispered 'stay' like it was a lifeline.

His leg bounced restlessly. Every time the van hit a pothole, he felt the ghost of her hands in his hair. A year? He'd been lying through his teeth. He wouldn't last a week without backing her into a corner, solicitors and tabloids be damned.

Caroline sat with her laptop next to him. Her eyes burned from lack of sleep. She could feel Noel's gaze drifting toward her every few minutes, a physical heat that cut right through the bus's air conditioning. She didn't dare look up. One glance and she knew everyone in the van would see exactly what had happened. The electricity hadn't dissipated; it had just gone underground.

Noel leaned down to grab a bottle of water, his mouth hovering inches from her ear as the bus entered a tunnel, plunging the cabin into temporary darkness.

'I lied' he hissed, his voice so low it was felt rather than heard, dripping with dangerous impatience. 'I'm not making it to the M4 without wanting to put you against a wall, Caro. The 'noble hero' act? It's already failing. Spectacularly.'

He straightened up, grabbed his water, and sat back down without a second glance, leaving Caroline staring at her screen with her heart hammering against her ribs as they drove out of the tunnel.
