Part 49
18:23, 9 March 2026Noel caught the flash of her dark hoodie in the reflection of the mirror behind the bar. He saw her yank the hood over her head and bolt toward the back exit with a desperate, frantic energy.
'I told you to leave me be, move!' Noel snapped suddenly. The polite, weary smile he'd been maintaining for the socialites vanished instantly. He shrugged off the blonde woman clinging to his arm, ignored her indignant gasp, and let his half-full glass of wine clatter onto the wooden floor.
'Caroline!' he yelled over the pub's noise, but she had already disappeared through the heavy fire door.
Liam grabbed Noel's shoulder as he tried to storm past the bar. 'Let her go, man! She's done! She thinks you're just finishing her off, thinks this whole night was a sick joke to laugh in her face! And I can't fuckin' blame her'
'Shut it, Liam!' Noel wrenched himself free, his face a contorted mask of frustration and panic. 'You have no bloody idea what you're talking about!'
Noel kicked the back door open and stepped out into the damp, biting chill of the alleyway. A light rain had started to fall, slicking the cobblestones under the orange glow of the streetlamps. At the end of the alley, he saw her: a solitary figure in black, almost running toward the main road, her shoulders hunched high against the cold.
'Caroline! Stop! Just wait!' his voice echoed off the brick walls of the narrow passage.
She didn't stop. If anything, she moved faster, her boots splashing through the oily puddles. She just wanted away from the noise, away from the Gallaghers, and away from the crushing humiliation she felt he had orchestrated.
'If you walk around that corner, I swear to God you can kiss your job goodbye' Noel shouted after her, a desperate, typical Noel threat that cut through the night air like a blade.
Caroline stopped dead. Her back was still to him, her breath visible in small white plumes in the freezing air. She kept her fists balled deep in her hoodie pockets, her head bowed.
Caroline turned slowly, her hood falling back just enough to reveal a face that was hollowed out by more than just exhaustion. In the jaundiced glow of the alleyway streetlamp, she looked like a ghost.
'It's too late for that, Mr. Gallagher,' she said, her voice surprisingly steady, 'you can't sack me. I'm handing in my resignation. Effective immediately.'
Noel stopped a few feet away, his chest heaving from the sudden burst of movement. The rain was starting to plaster his hair to his forehead. 'Don't be ridiculous. You're tired, you're stressed, and you're overthinking a few drinks in a pub..'
'It's not the drinks, Mr. Gallagher' she snapped, taking a step toward him, her eyes flashing with a sudden, sharp pain. 'It's the fact that I spent six months making sure you were comfortable, making sure you were protected, and all you did was bitch about me behind my back and now you need me to be here to watch how you frantically buzz around those socialites? To see how little I actually matter in your world?'
Noel opened his mouth to protest, but she cut him off.
'Sara was right about you. She told me exactly what you'd do once you didn't need me to fix the schedules anymore. You just want to finish me, don't you? Prove that I'm just another piece of gear to be packed away into a truck for Manchester.'
Noel's face went pale. The name of his soon to be ex-wife hung in the cold air between them like a curse. 'Sara? That bitter, lying bitch is the one you're going to believe?'
'She's the only one who had the balls to tell me the truth!' Caroline cried, her voice finally breaking. 'I'm done, Mr. Gallagher, go back inside to your blonde little friend, maybe she can take over the tour manager role? Anyway..I'm going home.'
She turned her back on him again, her boots splashing through the dark water as she headed for the main road.
'Caroline, wait! Just listen for one second!' Noel's voice cracked, the cool, untouchable rockstar persona finally splintering under the rain. He didn't chase her this time; he just stood there, looking suddenly older, the orange streetlamp casting long, jagged shadows across his face.
'You think I brought you here to watch me? Really?' he shouted, his voice thick with a frustration that bordered on despair. 'I brought you here because I couldn't face that room without knowing you were in it! I'm a coward, Caroline! I let those people swarm me because if I'm talking to them, I don't have to tell you the truth that I'm terrified of what happens when this tour ends and you walk away.'
Caroline slowed her pace but didn't turn. The rain was coming down harder now, soaking through her hoodie.
'I told you I loved you tonight, surely you must have heard that' Noel continued, stepping forward into a puddle, unheeding of his expensive sneakers. 'For fuck's sakes, Caro, when will you get it through that thick skull of yours that you're not the gear, Caroline. You're the only thing keeping me from falling apart.'
He stopped, breathing hard, the silence of the alleyway only broken by the distant hiss of traffic. 'Don't go home. Don't let her be right. If you walk away now, then she's won. But if you stay... if you just stay for five minutes and let me be something other than "Mr. Gallagher," maybe we can fix this.'
Caroline didn't turn back. 'There's nothing left to fix, goodnight Mr. Gallagher' She stepped out of the alley, ran to her car, and vanished into the Cardiff night, leaving Noel standing alone in the rain.
The hotel room was a tomb of silence. She didn't turn on the lights. She stripped off the damp hoodie, scrubbed the salt of the tears and the stadium grime from her face, and collapsed onto the bed. Her phone buzzed incessantly, texts from Liam, missed calls from Debbie, and one solitary message from Noel that she refused to open. She stared at the ceiling until the first grey smear of dawn filtered through the heavy curtains.
At 06:00 AM, her alarm shrieked.
Her body protested, every muscle screaming for the resignation she'd shouted in the alley, but the discipline that had made her the best in the business won out over the emotional wreckage. She took a hot shower, put on her clothes, pulled her long honey hair into a flawless high ponytail, and slid on her sunglasses.
At the venue, she was running from one production meeting to the other until early afternoon, walking to the little manager's office, she noticed the two black Range Rovers rolling inside of the stadium, fuck..what time was it?..rehearsal time..
Caroline walked straight toward them, her tablet held like a shield, her voice as cool and clinical as a winter morning.
'Good Afternoon,' she said, looking at no one in particular. Liam looked up, a flicker of immense relief in his eyes. Noel stiffened. He set his coffee down and looked at her, searching for a crack in the armor, for any trace of the woman from the alleyway.
'Caroline..but I thought..' Noel started, his voice rasping.
'I didn't receive your email with my resignation, Mr. Gallagher' she interrupted immediately, her eyes fixed firmly on her screen. 'So I am moving forward with the assumption you haven't found a new Tour Manager yet, so I will work my notice. Now, let's move, please. We have a tight window.'
She walked past them toward the backstage area, she was physically there, but she was further away than she had ever been.
The heavy, humid air of the Cardiff stadium felt like a physical weight as Caroline led the way toward the stage. Every step of her boots on the concrete was a declaration: she was a professional, just a cog in the machine, and nothing more.
Liam lingered back, catching Noel's arm. 'What the fuck is all that about you giving her the sack? I don't care what you do, but this needs to stop..' he whispered, his voice uncharacteristically harsh.
Noel didn't respond. He followed her, his eyes anchored to the back of her head, to the high ponytail that swung with rhythmic, military precision. The "Mr. Gallagher" kept cutting deeper than any insult she could have hurled. It was a demotion, a wall of glass she had erected between them that he couldn't figure out how to break.
As they reached the stage, the crew began to swarm. Caroline didn't miss a beat. She was a whirlwind of efficiency, giving orders to the lighting techs and conferring with the stage manager without a single tremor in her voice. She treated Noel like a high-priority piece of equipment, something to be positioned, tested, and maintained, but never touched.
During the rehearsal of "Live Forever," Noel stood at the mic, his guitar strapped on, but his eyes weren't on the fretboard. They were on Caroline, who was standing at the sound desk, her face illuminated by the glow of the monitors, her expression as unreadable as stone.
He stepped back from the mic, the feedback whining through the empty stadium. 'I can't do this,' he muttered.
Caroline's voice came through his in-ear monitor, crisp and detached. 'Is there an issue with the monitors, Mr. Gallagher? Or the floor wedges?'
Noel looked directly at her, across the vast, empty floor. 'The issue isn't the monitors, and you fuckin' know it.'
The crew went silent. The air in the stadium suddenly felt as thin as it had in the hallway the night before. Caroline didn't flinch. She slowly looked up from the desk, her sunglasses hiding her eyes, but her jaw was set in a hard, uncompromising line.
'If the gear is functional, please continue, Mr. Gallagher' she said, her voice echoing through the PA. 'We are behind schedule already'.
Noel's patience snapped. The sound of his own last name, the cold, clinical 'Mr. Gallagher',coming through the monitors once again, was the final straw. He didn't say a word. He unslung his Gibson, letting it thud dangerously against the stand, and hopped off the edge of the stage.
The crew froze. Liam stopped mid-verse, his tambourine falling silent.
Noel marched across the vast, empty stadium floor, his footsteps echoing like gunshots. Caroline didn't move. She stood behind the sound desk, her fingers poised over the faders, her jaw locked. She didn't even flinch when he reached her, but the air between them was electric with six months of repressed tension.
Without a word of explanation, Noel reached out and grabbed her by the wrist.
'Mr. Gallagher, let go of me! We have a schedule..'
'Fuck you and fuck the schedule,' he hissed, his voice low and dangerous. He didn't loosen his grip. He began to haul her toward the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms. Caroline stumbled a couple of times, her boots skidding on the cable protectors, but she refused to make a scene in front of the fifty stagehands watching in stunned silence.
He dragged her through the heavy fire doors, down the fluorescent-lit corridor, and shoved his way into his private dressing room. He slammed the door behind them and turned the lock with a violent click.
'What the hell is wrong with you?' he roared, spinning around to face her, his entire demeanor was pure, unadulterated Gallagher rage. 'You show up here, acting like a fuckin' robot again? Acting like last night didn't happen? Like I didn't stand in the rain? I even fuckin told you I fuckin' loved you?'
Caroline stood in the center of the room, her high ponytail slightly dishevelled from the walk, but her sunglasses were still firmly in place. 'I am working my notice as discussed, Mr. Gallagher. I am being professional.'
'Professional?' Noel stepped into her space, his face inches from hers. 'You're being a fuckin' coward! You're hiding behind that tablet because you're terrified that if you look at me, you'll have to admit that Sara is a liar and that I meant every word!'
He kicked a flight case, the metal clanging against the wall. 'I've been awake for thirty-six hours, Caroline! I haven't eaten, I haven't slept, and I've spent every second wondering if I'd ever see you again. And you walk in here like nothing happened and ask me about monitor wedges?'
Caroline's chest began to heave, the artificial calm finally starting to crack under the pressure of his shouting. 'I really don't think you have been awake for thirty-six hours because of me, Mr. Gallagher, last night, you were swarmed by a lot of ladies..' her voice barely a whisper.
'Because I didn't know how to talk to you anymore! I still don't' Noel screamed back, his hands gesturing wildly.
Noel took another step toward her, his shadow looming large in the harsh, unflattering fluorescent light of the dressing room. The walls seemed to pulse with the force of his voice. He wasn't the tired, pleading man from the alleyway anymore; he was a storm, fueled by forty-eight hours of no sleep and a fractured ego that didn't know how to handle her icy silence.
'Answer me!' he roared, slamming his open palm against the metal locker right next to her head. The bang echoed like a gunshot in the cramped space. 'Look at me when I'm talking to you! Stop this fucking act!'
Caroline flinched, pressing her back so hard against the door she could feel the handle digging into her spine. Her breathing was shallow, jagged. The "Boss Lady" was gone; there was only a terrified woman clinging to her tablet as a final shield. Her fingers were shaking so violently that it slipped from her grip, hitting the carpet with a dull thud.
Noel didn't even notice. He was spiraling. 'You think you can punish me with your "professionalism"? You think you can walk around here like a robot while I'm falling apart? I've never fucking put myself out there for anyone like I did last night!'
He grabbed a glass water bottle from the side table and, with a primal shout, hurled it against the opposite wall. It shattered into a thousand glittering shards. Caroline jumped, her eyes snapping shut, her hands flying up to cover her ears. The aggression in the room was suffocating, a raw, unfiltered Gallagher rage she had seen directed at Noel's brother a few times, but never at her.
'Say something!' he screamed, his voice cracking with pure frustration. 'Tell me you hate me, tell me Sara was right, but don't you dare call me Mr. Gallagher one more time!'
At that moment, a heavy, urgent pounding rattled the door.
'Noel! Open the fucking door!' It was Liam's voice, and he didn't sound like the tour's joker anymore. There was a protective grit in his tone that made Noel's fury freeze for a split second. 'I mean it, man! I can hear you screaming from down the hall. Let her out!'
Noel stood there panting, his chest heaving under his sweat-stained shirt. He looked at Caroline, who was still trembling against the door, her face ashen beneath her honey-blonde hair. For the first time, the madness in his eyes flickered, replaced by the crushing realization of what he'd just done.
