Part 35

00:22, 15 May 2026

The Range Rover pulled up the gravel drive of Liam's mock-Tudor home in the North of London. Noel killed the engine, the sudden silence in the car heavy with the weight of the morning's explosion.

'Come on, you lot' Noel muttered, his voice gravelly. He stepped out into the biting air just as the front door swung open.

Liam came out to meet them in a silk dressing gown, a mug of tea in one hand and a look of pure happiness on his face. Behind him, Peggy appeared, her eyes softening as she took in the sight of her eldest son on her youngest son's doorstep for the first time in fifteen years.

Noel walked straight up to the porch, leaning in close so the kids wouldn't hear. 'I've done it,' he whispered, his breath hitching in the cold. 'I've left her. It's over. I'm out.'

The silence that followed was absolute. Liam's smirk vanished, replaced by a rare, solemn nod of understanding. He knew the "dark" history between his brother and Sara better than anyone but he just couldn't believe his ears. Peggy reached out, her hand trembling as she gripped Noel's arm, pulling him into the warmth of the hallway.

'Get them in, Noel,' Peggy whispered back, her voice thick with relief. 'Get my grandsons and my granddaughter in here. The kettle's on and breakfast's nearly ready. If you're starting over, we might as well do it with a full house, eh?'

The clinical, museum-like silence of Noel's house was officially replaced by the beautiful, rattling chaos of Liam's. In the living room, Donovan, Sonny, and Bowie together with Lennon and Gene were already darting around the furniture with Liam's dog, their laughter echoing off the high ceilings. It was a sound Noel hadn't heard in years without it being measured or hushed.

Noel sat at the heavy wooden kitchen table, his hands wrapped around a mug of tea that was actually hot, not the tepid, artistic pour Sara favored. Liam sat opposite him, leaning forward like he was watching a goal-line scramble.

'Oh, well this time it looks like you actually mean it, you've taken off your ring' Liam noticed the empty spot on his brother's finger, 'I do..I told her she could go to Scotland all she wants, but the kids stay here with me. She tried the 'vulnerable' act, but it was just...another piece of scheming, fuckin' hell.' Noel leaned back a bit and covered his face with his hands, unable to believe that he just blew up his marriage.

Debbie nodded toward the living room, where the kids' shouting had hit a new crescendo. 'The press is going to be a bloodbath, Noel..you know that, don't ya? She'll try to say Liam and I or Caroline are the 'bad influences' taking you away from her..she knows how to pick her moments, I'll give her that..and she will and it will be all before the tour, mark my words..'

'Let her,' Noel said, 'Let her say what she wants. For the first time in a decade, I don't have to check my phone to see if I'm allowed to be happy.'

Liam let out a sharp, jagged bark of a laugh and slapped the table, the tea in his mug sloshing over the side. 'Noely G. you've finally grown a pair, haven't you? I thought you'd gone soft on me, living in that art gallery with all that ugly beige furniture and the silence.' He leaned in, 'If she starts, I'll finish it. You know I've got enough on her to keep her busy until the next century..'

Peggy moved between them, placing a massive platter of bacon and eggs in the center of the table with a firm thud. 'That's enough of that, Liam. No more talk of "having things" on people. You're not a tabloid.' She turned to Noel, her hand resting heavily on his shoulder. 'You look ten years younger already, son. Eat. You're thin as a rake.'

As the kids piled into the kitchen like a whirlwind of energy and noise, Noel felt the crushing tension in his chest finally snap. For years, every word had been a calculation, every movement a risk of upsetting the fragile, controlled peace Sara demanded. Now, the chaos of Liam's house, the barking dog, the clattering plates, the unfiltered Gallagher banter, felt like the only thing that made sense.

Noel picked up a fork, looking at Liam, who was already stealing a piece of bacon from his plate.'About that tour...' Noel started, a glimmer of the old spark returning to his eyes.

'Yeah?' Liam asked, mid-chew.

'We're going to need a bigger setlist. And tell your lot to keep the volume up. I've spent too long being quiet.'

Liam's grin returned, wider than ever. 'Now that,' he said, pointing a greasy finger at his brother, 'is the Noel Gallagher I remember. Welcome back to the real world, Noely!!.'

The heavy kitchen door swung open again, and Debbie walked in with a plate full of muffins, her eyes fixed on her phone.

'And there it is,' she said, sliding the phone across the wooden table toward Noel. 'She's posted. A picture of the empty hallway in your house. Caption says: "Silence is the loudest scream. Some people choose chaos over stability. Praying for my family."'

Liam snorted, spray-painting a bit of egg across the table. 'Stability? She means a straitjacket and a gag order. "Silence is the loudest scream", who does she think she is, Morrissey?'

Noel didn't even pick up the phone. He just pushed it back toward Debbie, his focus remaining on the plate of food Peggy had put in front of him. 'She can pray all she wants. For the first time in fifteen years, she's shouting into an empty room. I'm not there to hear it, and the kids aren't there to be scared by it.'

'Exactly,' Debbie muttered, seting the muffins down. 'Caroline just texted me that she is already on the receiving end of Sara's wrath..says she's already calling your lawyers..because you've "abducted" the kids and whisked them off to a hostile environment.'

Liam erupted 'Hostile? This is a family home for fuck's sakes., ok well if she wants hostile, I'll show her that she doesn't fully understand who she's accusing' he grabbed his phone in anger.

Noel reached out, surprisingly calm, and gripped Liam's forearm. The contact was brief but enough to steady the room. 'will you calm down, Liam? That's what she wants. She wants the "Angry Liam" headlines to prove I've made a mistake. She wants a scene.' Noel looked at the muffin plate, then back at his brother. 'We're not giving her that pleasure'.

Just then, Sonny ran into the kitchen, skidding on the linoleum. 'Uncle Liam! The dog's got your trainer!'

Liam's face transformed instantly from fury to a mischievous grin. 'Oi! Not the Balenciagas!' He dashed out after his nephew, his heavy footsteps thundering down the hall.

Noel watched them go, a small, genuine smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. He looked at Debbie. 'Tell Caroline to block her number instantly. If Sara thinks she can start stalking and threatening Caro, she's got another thing coming. If she wants to talk, she can go through a solicitor. I'm done with her shit.'

Noel exhaled, a long, weary sound that seemed to carry the weight of the last decade out of his lungs. He leaned his head back, staring at the ornate Tudor ceiling. The muffled sounds of Liam shouting at the dog and Sonny's high-pitched giggles drifted in from the hallway. It was messy, it was loud, and it was so goddamn pleasant.

'She's going to go nuclear when she realizes she can't get a rise out of you,' Debbie warned quietly, sliding a muffin onto a plate for him.

'Let her,' Noel replied, his voice regaining that sharp, Mancunian edge. 'The more she screams at a brick wall, the more people see what I've been living with. I've spent years making excuses for her "moods" and her "sharp tongue" just to keep the peace for the kids. And even that peace was a lie'

Debbie cleared her throat, tossing a look toward the hallway to make sure the kids were still out of earshot while Liam came walking back to the table and sat down again. She turned back to Noel, her voice just above a whisper..'talking about Caroline..does she know? I mean, that you and Sara..are over.? Or did you not tell her because you're too scared of what happens when you're both in the same room without your wedding ring in the way?'

Liam actually stopped chewing, his eyes darting between Debbie and his brother like he was watching a championship final

'I did..tell her..well, I sent her a text last night that me and Sara were done..but she just sent me a text back to not make any rash decisions, and that I always went back in the past..I don't know..'

Noel's voice trailed off, a rare note of defeat leaking through. He stared at his phone as if it had betrayed him. The "rash decisions" comment from Caroline stung because it was true; he had retreated back into the silence so many times before just to avoid the "nuclear" fallout Sara promised.

'She probably thinks I'm going back,' Noel whispered, looking at the empty spot on his finger again. 'She thinks this is just another row. Another "mood."'

'Yeah,' Liam said, his voice unusually gentle as he watched his brother's face. 'And you can't blame her for not biting, man. How many times have you called her at 3 AM crying into a gin and tonic, only to be back at the dinner table with Her Majesty by lunchtime the next day?'

Debbie sighed, leaning her chin on her hand. 'And you're a 1000% sure you're completely and utterly in love with her? and is she in love with you? does she even know what your feelings are for her? I don't want to be a wet blanket, but with what she is going through with that Rob fella at the moment..I sincerely don't know if she knows her left from her right anymore'

Noel's silence wasn't the hesitant kind; it was the heavy, suffocating kind that happens when a man is staring at a truth he's too terrified to touch. He didn't answer Debbie. He couldn't.

He just sat there, his thumb tracing the pale, indented skin where his wedding ring had lived like a shackle for over a decade. In his head, a million moments with Caroline flashed by, the way she knew how he took his tea before he even asked, the way she'd catch his eye across a room full of industry phonies and anchor him, and the way she'd silently endure Sara's venomous side-eyes just to stay in his orbit.

He knew he was head over heels. It wasn't even a question. It was a physical ache, a permanent hum under his skin that had been drowned out by the static of his marriage. But her?

'I don't know,' Noel finally rasped, his voice sounding like it had been dragged over gravel. 'How can she be? I've been a coward, Debs. I can write a hundred love songs for my wife..well my soon to be ex-wife who wasn't even remotely interested in any of them, but with Caroline..it's different, she's been slowly crawling under my skin..she takes my bloody breath away, my breath and my nerve'.

He looked at his brother and his girlfriend, his eyes pleading for a truth he was too scared to find himself. 'Who am I kidding? Of course she's not fookin' interested, how can she be after what Rob did to her..she was raped..I..and I was too busy to notice, I even got angry at her last night.. fuccckkk' Noel's voice was a ragged whisper, the usual Gallagher armor lying in pieces on the expensive floor.

Everyone around the table went silent. Liam's eyes widened, his usual sarcasm evaporated by the sheer brutality of the truth until the heavy silence was shattered by the sharp, rhythmic chime of the doorbell.

Noel flinched, and  Liam shot a wary look at the door, his hand instinctively tightening around his mug. 'If that's them goddamn tabloid fuckwits or photographers, I'm burying them in the garden,' Liam muttered, as he got up and walked toward the hallway and opened the door.

There she was.

Caroline stood on the threshold, framed by the biting North London frost. She looked exhausted, dark circles under her eyes that no amount of concealer could hide, but she was dressed to the nines, as always. In her left hand, she clutched a chilled bottle of Veuve Cliquot; in her right, a small gift bag.

'Caroline!? Come in! Merry Christmas!'

Hearing Liam call out her name, Noel didn't move. He couldn't. He just sat there, his heart thumping in his chest, it was like he had just dreamed a dream into life.

'I'm sorry to interrupt, Liam, but I saw the Range Rover out front,' Caroline said, her voice steady but thin, echoing in the hallway. She walked into the kitchen, her eyes scanning the room, waving her hello's to everyone. She avoided Noel's gaze at first, stepping toward the table to set the champagne down with a soft clink.

'I already sent Noel a text last night, and he's probably already told you,' she said, directed at the room in general. 'but the tour is officially a clean sweep. Sold out in minutes. Records broken. I thought..well, despite how we..or I..left things last night, I just had to acknowledge it. Celebrate this. I'm just so happy for you guys!'

She finally looked at Noel, so it was true what he had said, Sara was nowhere to be seen.

The tension was so thick you could have cut it with a knife, but Liam, never one to let a moment stay heavy for too long, let out a loud, triumphant yell that made everyone jump.

'Records broken? Clean sweep?!' Liam roared, stepping forward and sweeping Caroline into a massive, bear-like hug that nearly lifted her off her designer boots.

The physical contact seemed to shatter the crystalline silence. The room flooded with noise again as Debbie and Peggy crowded around, offering their own hugs and congratulations. For a few frantic seconds, the weight of Noel's pending divorce was masked by the genuine, adrenaline-fueled joy of the tour's success. It was the "Gallagher Way", burying the trauma under a landslide of celebration.

Caroline laughed, a breathless, slightly watery sound, as she was passed from Liam to Debbie. 'I knew it would be big,' she managed, smoothing down her coat, 'but the servers actually crashed. You could have sold out Wembley ten times over.'

Through the flurry of arms and congratulations, her eyes never truly left Noel. He hadn't moved. He was still standing by his chair, his bare left hand resting conspicuously on the back of it, watching her with an expression she couldn't quite read.

As the initial burst of excitement settled, Liam stepped back, slinging an arm around Caroline's shoulder and pulling her toward the table. 'Right, get a glass. We're having champagne for breakfast.'

Liam shot Noel a pointed, heavy look over Caroline's head, a silent command to say something.

Caroline's smile hesitated a little as she felt the shift in the room. She looked at the champagne, then at her boss again..'Noel?' she said softly, her voice cutting through Liam's bravado. 'Are you..are you actually okay? Everything was confirmed for the second time this morning, I felt I had to come and tell you in person..' but then she saw his hand and the lack of a ring on his finger. So it was true what he wrote last night? Sara and him were over?

Noel cleared his throat, and walked up to her with the biggest grin. 'I'm better than I've been in fifteen years, Caro. I've just..I'm uhm..over the moon..come here, thanks for all you've done, you're fuckin' amazing!' and for one of the first times ever in her career, he threw his arms around her and held her really tight for the longest time while his lips pushed down on the spot just under her ear, sending the best shiver ever down her spine.
