Part 32

02:41, 18 February 2026

The energy in the room had shifted from high-strung tension to the soft, heavy weight of a long day winding down. The children were slumped in their chairs, their eyes glassy and unfocused, the earlier sugar-fueled excitement replaced by almost half-closed eyelids.

Noel and Liam exchanged a rare, unspoken moment of parental mercy. Seeing the youngest beginning to list sideways toward the carpet, Noel leaned forward with a weary smile. 'Alright, you lot,' he said, his voice dropping to a gentler register reserved only for them. 'Since you've been so patient, how about one present? Just one, before you head up to bed.'

The ripple of renewed life was instant. Liam nodded his consent, and the children scrambled toward the tree, the sound of tearing paper and high-pitched shreeks started to fill the room.

Caroline seized the moment and stood up, 'Dinner really was wonderful, Peggy, thank you' she gave her a smile. 'Leave the rest to me. You go watch them open their presents.'

She didn't wait for a reply. Gathering the silver and porcelain, Caroline retreated into the kitchen. The swinging door offered a muffled sanctuary from the laughter under the tree, carefully she put the plates down and stared out of the kitchen window, trying to wrap her head around everything happening with Rob.

The swinging door creaked. She didn't turn; she assumed it was Peggy coming to insist on helping. But the footsteps were too heavy, the silence too charged.

'Caro? Can we talk?'

Noel's voice full of concern drifted out to her, she finally turned, 'This isn't the time, Noel. Go back to the tree and the kids. Go back to Sara, I'll be out of your hair, once I'm done clearing all this up'

'I don't give a damn about the tree,' he hissed, pushing his hands deep into his pocket, he was clearly stewing on things 'and I don't give a damn about Sara', he looked up and his eyes drilled into hers? 'why didn't you tell me?'

Caroline shook her head 'Noel, listen to me' she whispered, 'I really don't think this is the time or the place to talk about such a topic and certainly not a conversation for Sara to walk in on.'

But Noel did anything but listen 'Rape?..Caro.., I've been sitting at that table for the last two hours watching you pretend nothing happened. And all I could think was...he was with her, did you go to him or did he come to you?' he didn't just say it; he breathed the words with a sickened, expression.

'Noel, stop it,' she breathed, her voice trembling despite her best efforts. 'This is my burden, not a piece of gossip for your wife, or anyone else, to obsess over.' she started stacking the plates in the dishwasher, but Noel stepped forward, his hand shooting out to catch her wrist, stopping the clatter of the plates. His grip wasn't rough, but it was desperate, forcing her to stay still.

'Do you really think that's what you are to us? A piece of gossip?, If something happens to you, I have a right to know, ok?' he snapped feeling helpless and left out, the shock was being overtaken by a dark, obsessive need for the truth.

'Ok, so you clearly want to know the mechanics of what he did to me so you can decide how much to pity me, or what? Do you want to know the details of how he raped me? And how many times he did it that night?, is that it?' she tried to keep the venom in her words down, but failed miserably .

'Do you really want to know why I gave in to Rob? Huh? Ok, fine, if you must know, he was threatening to come for you and Liam and your families if I didn't give into him..so yeah, I did it all to keep you and the kids and Liam SAFE!!!! Happy now? If that doesn't earn me an 'employee of the month' badge, then I don't know what will' She slammed the dishwasher rack shut, the metallic clatter echoing around the kitchen.

The heavy silence was shattered by the swinging door hitting the wall with a cheerful thud. Bowie burst in, with a new doll clutched to her chest, her face flushed with the kind of pure, unadulterated joy that only a child on Christmas Eve could possess. 'Caro! Look! Daddy said I could open a present!' Bowie rushed toward Caroline and demanded to be picked up.

Caroline's transformation was instantaneous, a masterclass in survival and brilliant acting. She swallowed the bile in her throat, smoothed her expression into a mask of soft delight, 'She's beautiful, Bowie,' Caroline whispered, her voice miraculously steady. 'A real princess. Just like you'.

'The boys are asking for you, Noel,' Sara's voice drifted out to him as she stepped inside the kitchen, her voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. 'They want you to tuck them in. Or is the conversation in here more important than your own children?' her gaze raking over Caroline with a visible loathing.

'Right, uhm.. I'll be going then too, thank you for the invitation,' Caroline managed to say, her voice paper-thin. 'I'll go get my coat and handbag' she hurried to say as to avoid Sara's predatory stare.

Sara didn't move an inch to let her pass. Instead, she let out a sharp, cold bark of a laugh. 'Oh, don't thank me, Caroline. I wasn't the one who invited you. And frankly, after the pathetic display you've put on tonight and so many times before, I'd prefer if this was the last time you crossed our doorstep.'

'Sara, enough!' Noel choked out, but his voice lacked the authority to stop her. He looked at Caroline, a silent plea for forgiveness in his eyes, but she refused to look back.

'No, Noel, let's be honest,' Sara continued, stepping closer to Caroline, her voice dripping with contempt. 'You come in here, ruin our dinner with your weird drama about Rob and your ridiculous lovelife, and the way you spoke to my husband just now, yes I heard you and your sad story about being raped..It's clear you're desperate for attention, even if you have to invent a tragedy to get it.'

The word "invent" hung in the air like a second violation. Caroline felt a wave of dissociation wash over her. She looked at the door, her only escape from the cruelty of this woman, 'I'm leaving,' Caroline repeated, her voice now a ghost of itself. She brushed past Sara, the physical contact making her skin crawl, and headed for the front door.

But Sara didn't let Caroline escape without one last jab. She stood there as Caroline put her coat over her shoulders, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, on her face a venomous smirk.

'Don't forget your dignity on the way out, Caroline,' Sara called out, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness before she threw the front door shut behind Caroline. 'If you ever had any, that is, just try not to use whatever pathetic mess you've made with Rob as an excuse to call here tomorrow, we will be busy being a real family.'

Standing on the porch, Caroline felt the sub-zero air hit her face, but she was so numb that the cold felt like a mercy compared to the psychological toxicity she had just left behind.

Inside, the hallway was a pressure cooker. Sara turned away from the door, smoothing her dress with a self-satisfied hum, her venomous smirk still lingering. She looked at Noel, expecting him to join her in the triumph of finally casting the 'intruder' out.

'Well,' Sara sighed, her voice light and airy. 'Now that the trash has taken itself out, maybe we can actually enjoy what's left of the night. Honestly, Noel, the nerve of her, pretending she's some fragile victim just to get your attention.'

Noel didn't move. The words "invent a tragedy" were screaming in his brain. He looked at Sara, the woman he had built a life with and felt a profound sense of revulsion.

'She wasn't inventing it, Sara,' Noel whispered, his voice trembling with a dangerous, quiet fury.

'Oh, don't start,' Sara rolled her eyes, heading toward the stairs. 'She's a professional martyr. She probably tripped over her own lies on the way to the car.'

'HE RAPED HER!' Noel's roar shattered the domestic quiet of the house, stopping Sara dead in her tracks on the third step. The festive lights in the hall seemed to flicker under the weight of the truth. 'He raped her because he wanted to get to us. To the kids.'

Outside, Caroline heard the muffled explosion of Noel's voice through the heavy oak door. She fumbled for her keys, her hands finally giving way to a violent, uncontrollable shaking. She climbed into the driver's seat and locked the doors, before she raced out of his driveway.

Liam stepped into the hallway, his presence a sudden, grounding weight between the two of them. He didn't look at Noel; his eyes were fixed on Sara, who was still frozen on the stairs, her face pale as the reality of the roar finally began to sink in.

'Sara, can you leave us alone, please?' Liam asked, his voice low but steady. 'Just go upstairs. Check on the kids. Now.'

Sara looked like she wanted to protest, to argue about her right to be in her own hallway, but one look at Noel's vibrating fury silenced her. Without a word, she turned and disappeared toward the upper landing, the sound of their bedroom door closing with a mighty bang.

Liam turned back to his brother. He grabbed Noel's shoulder, forcing him to look away from the stairs. 'She's gone, Noel. Look at me.'

'She called her a martyr,' Noel choked out, his voice thick with a mix of sadness and hatred. 'After everything... she stood there and mocked her.'

'I know,' Liam said, his grip tightening. 'But right now, there's nothing you can do, come on and show me that infamous home studio of yours, we'll talk'.

Noel's eyes cleared, the red mist of his rage parting for a moment, he looked toward the heavy oak front door, the space where Caroline had stood just moments ago. 'Sure, yeah'.

Noel led the way down the narrow corridor toward the back of the house, his movements mechanical, like a man walking through a dream he couldn't wake up from. He pushed open the heavy, soundproofed door of the studio, and the familiar scent of old dust, expensive electronics, and stale coffee hit him. Usually, this room was his sanctuary, the one place where the noise of the world tuned out, but tonight, the silence felt deafening.

Liam stepped in behind him, closing the door and leaning his back against it. He scanned the room, his eyes lingering on the gold records and the messy tangle of patch cables

Noel sank into the chair, his head falling into his hands. The neon blue light from the monitors cast sharp, ghostly shadows across his face. 'I've lived with her for almost 22 years, Liam. 22 years. And I didn't know she was capable of that. The coldness... it was like looking at a stranger.'

'Adrenaline makes people say the worst versions of their thoughts,' Liam said, though his voice lacked any real conviction. He walked over to a small fridge in the corner, pulled out two beers, and handed one to his brother.

Noel popped the cap, the hiss of the carbonation the only sound in the room, Noel took a long, heavy swallow, the cold liquid doing nothing to settle the acid churning in his stomach. He stared at a cable on the floor, unable to reconcile the woman upstairs with the person he'd shared two decades of his life with.

'Twenty-two years,' Noel repeated, his voice barely a whisper, thick with the realization of a life misspent. 'You think you're building something solid, a foundation... and then you find out you've been standing on a frozen lake the whole time. The ice just cracked, Liam. I'm sinking.'

Liam pulled up a stool, leaning forward so he was in Noel's line of sight. 'You're not sinking. You're just seeing the bottom for the first time. It's ugly, yeah, but at least you know where the ground is.' He gestured with his bottle toward the house beyond the soundproofed door. 'People like Sara... they protect the image of the life, not the people in it.'

Noel looked up, his eyes hard and glassy under the neon glow. 'I don't give a damn about the image. I don't even care about the house anymore.' He set the beer down on the mixing console with a sharp clack. 'I sat at that table tonight and watched Caroline try to keep it together while Sara poked at her like she was some... some stray cat. And I did nothing. I let her walk out of here alone.'

'You didn't know,' Liam reminded him firmly. 'But you know now. And you're not going to let her stay alone.'
