Part 29
08:38, 6 March 2026The heavy thud of the front door closing echoed through the quiet house, leaving Liam standing alone in the middle of the kitchen. The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the the sight of her untouched, cold chamomile tea.
He looked down at his hands, he had tried to be the voice of reason, to protect the fragile peace he had finally found with Noel, but watching her walk out into the dark, bruised, broken, and utterly alone, felt like a different kind of betrayal.
Outside, the winter air nibbled at Caroline's skin as she hurried down the snow-dusted street, her phone pressed to her ear. She felt so stupid, the marks on her neck might be hidden by her scarf, but the shame felt like a beacon in the night. She was running away to protect both brothers and their families, but at the same time, she realized she had nowhere left to go and nobody to talk to and tell her everything was going to be ok.
The taxi's headlights faded into the night, leaving Caroline alone on the pavement in front of Rob's house. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She wasn't here to seek shelter; she was here for the only way out she could see: a confrontation on her own terms.
She raised her hand and banged on the door. Not a hesitant tap, but a loud, demanding strike.
When the door opened, Rob stood there. He looked impeccable, as if the events from earlier that day hadn't affected him at all. The smile he began to form died the moment he saw the look in her eyes.
'Caro,' he said, his voice low and dangerously soft. 'I didn't expect to see you again tonight. Have you finally come to your senses?'
Caroline took a step over the threshold, forcing him to back up into his own hallway. She pulled her coat open, her scarf loose around her neck, making the dark marks on her skin painfully visible in the bright light. 'We're going to talk, Rob. And we're going to settle this nonsense of yours right now,' she said, her voice trembling but resolute. 'You're going to disappear from my life. No phone calls, no texts, no "accidental" run-ins with Noel, or anyone else for that matter! You leave my life right now, or I make sure everyone, including the police, sees exactly what you've done.'
Rob gave a short laugh, a cold sound that echoed through the hall. 'And who's going to believe you, Caro? Your boss? The man who's hardly protected you? Liam? I bet you and him went straight to the police with the video already!?'
'No,' Caroline said, her voice dropping to a whisper that carried more weight than a scream. 'We didn't go to the police. Not yet. And I'm not planning on it, Rob..but this has to stop, Noel, Liam, their families, you leave them alone, is that understood?, I don't know what's come over you, we've always been such good friends..'
Rob's eyes darkened, the calm mask finally cracking to reveal the simmering resentment underneath. He didn't wait for her to answer; instead, he took another step, crowding her against the wall of the hallway, fuck, not again.
'Friends?' he spat, the word dripping with bitterness. 'Is that what you call it? All those late nights at your place or mine, the way you leaned on me every time things got hard, the way you looked at me? You led me on, Caro. For months, you made me believe we had a future. I did everything for you. I protected you, I prioritised you... I built my world around the idea of us and all I got from you was rejection.'
'I led you on?' Caroline's voice was barely a whisper, but it cut through his rage like a blade. 'I leaned on a friend, Rob, or at least I thought I was. Every "thank you" was just that, gratitude for help I thought was genuine. I never asked you to build your world around me. I never asked you to obsess over me.'
She looked down at the dark, blooming bruises on her arms, then back up at him, her eyes burning with a sudden, fierce clarity.
'Even if everything you said was true, even if I had broken your heart into a thousand pieces, does that give you the right to do this?' she gestured to the marks on her skin. 'Is that your justification? That because I didn't love you back the way you wanted, you're allowed to put your hands on me? To hurt me?'
Rob's eyes flickered down to the bruises, but there was no remorse, only a stubborn, twisted conviction. He didn't pull back; he leaned in further, his shadow engulfing her against the hallway wall.
'You don't get it,' he hissed, his voice cracking with a terrifying mix of self-pity and rage. 'You took everything I gave and gave nothing back. You used me, Caro. You made me feel like I was the only one who mattered, and then you turned around and looked at me like I was a stranger. You pushed me to the edge. What happened...that was on you. You triggered that.'
Seeing her step back in shock, he tried a different approach 'Caro, listen to me,' he whispered, his voice suddenly smooth, almost melodic. 'We don't have to do this. We don't have to be enemies. Everything I did... it came from a place of love. It was messy because I just care too much. You know me better than anyone. You know I'm a good man.'
He stepped even closer, trying to force her to meet his eyes, his voice thickening with a false intimacy. 'We can fix this. I'll show you how much I love you. You'll remember why you needed me.' His lips only inches removed from hers.
Rob's breath was hot against her skin, smelling of stale coffee and desperation. He didn't wait for a response; he closed the final inch, his mouth crashing onto hers in a forced, suffocating attempt at a kiss. It wasn't an act of affection, it was a final, desperate move to reclaim ownership over her.
Caroline's eyes flew open, filled with a mixture of horror and disgust. She turned her face sharply to the side, his lips catching only the corner of her mouth and her cheek. The intimacy he was trying to manufacture felt like another assault, a physical manifestation of sexual coercion and harassment.
'Stop it!' she choked out, her voice muffled against his shoulder as she desperately tried to push him away. 'Rob, are you deaf? let go of me! Enough!'
But Rob was far gone, fueled by a delusional belief that he could "reset" their relationship through force. He shifted his weight, pinning her more firmly against the wall, his hand sliding to the back of her head to keep her from turning away again.
'You'll see,' he murmured against her ear, his voice trembling 'Once you let go of this anger, you'll see that I'm the only one who truly knows you. The only one who can handle you. I'll stay away from Noel, Liam, everyone and everything else, I swear, just give in to me, Caro, come on, you know you want it,'
Caroline's resistance finally collapsed, her body went completely still, a hollow shell of the woman who had walked through the door minutes ago. She realized with a sickening certainty that he would not stop until he had claimed what he believed was his.
Rob felt the surrender. A dark, triumphant light sparked in his eyes, not the look of a man in love, but of a conqueror who had finally broken a long siege.
'That's it,' he whispered, his voice thick and feverish against her neck. 'Finally. You're finally listening.'
He didn't let go of her for a second, his touch heavy and possessive as he forced her toward the bedroom while her mind raced with fear, but she knew nobody was gonna save her this time, just let it happen, she told herself, let him have his way, you're black and blue already, he can't hurt you more than he already has..could he? It's the only way to divert his attention away from the brothers, the families, from Oasis, from the tour.
The threshold she crossed felt like the point of no return. The door clicked shut behind her with a sound more final than anything she had ever heard.
Rob didn't smile; he simply watched her with a gaze of cold triumph. He knew he had broken her. He gripped her upper arm, directly over the darkening bruises from earlier, and pushed her on the bed. Caroline didn't resist. Her body felt like lead, her mind retreating into a distant, dark corner where she wouldn't have to feel the pain or the degradation.
In the hallway, she had left behind her coat and her dignity. In his bedroom, there was no pretense of the "friendship" or "love" he used to lie about; it was a cold transaction of power. As he pushed himself on top of her, Caroline stared at the ceiling, her breathing shallow and jagged. Every touch felt like a brand, every slap or movement a deeper tear in her soul.
When it was over, he pushed her away as if she were nothing more than a used object. 'See, Caro,' he whispered, calmly refastening his watch. 'That wasn't so hard, was it? you were on fuckin' fire and gagging for it, I knew you would come to your senses, this was such a kinky playdate' he pushed a rough kiss on her lips 'now, get dressed and get out, I leave this afternoon to go celebrate the holidays with friends...'
Caroline lay motionless on the bed, the damp sheets against her skin, the way he reframed her terror as "fire", the way he twisted her desperate sacrifice into a "kinky playdate", made her stomach turn with a violent, acidic nausea.
Her movements were mechanical as she got up and started putting her clothes back on, her mind completely detached from her body. Every inch of her felt tainted, the marks on her neck now eclipsed by a deeper, invisible stain. She felt the rough phantom pressure of his last kiss on her lips and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand until the skin was raw.
'I'll be out of the city by three. But don't think for a second that this was a one-time deal. You're too good to give up now.' Rob said, his tone breezy, almost cheerful as he checked his reflection in the mirror.
She didn't answer because it didn't matter, he had gotten what he wanted and she had bought everyone's safety, but the price had been the last shred of her self-respect.
'Daddy?' Bowie stood there in her pajamas, clutching a stuffed reindeer, her hair a mess of sleep-tossed curls.
She padded across his room and climbed onto the bed, nesting beside Noel. 'Is Caroline coming tonight? She promised she'd help me choose my clothes.'
Noel pushed a kiss in her hair, 'she said she would, and Caroline always keeps her promises, right?'
'Right,' Bowie murmured, snuggling deeper into his side. 'She said I should wear the sparkly tights.'
Noel smiled, this child was such a dream and Caroline would sooner walk through fire than disappoint Bowie, 'sparkly tights it is then, aren't you hungry? I am..come on, you go downstairs and I'll join you in a minute, ok? I need to make a quick phone call'
Bowie gave him a quick, tight squeeze before sliding off the bed, her reindeer tucked under one arm as she hurried toward the door, already dreaming of pancakes and glitter.
As soon as the door clicked shut, the warmth left Noel's face. He scrambled for his phone, his thumb hovering over his contacts.
'You made the right decision to come to us..and report him, Miss.. a car is on the way to him now..do you need any assistance to get home?' the officer gave her a comforting smile. 'That's very kind of you but I'll be fine..thank you for all your help..' Caroline softly said as she got up and walked to the exit, of course she wasn't fine but she didn't want to talk about that monster anymore, she just wanted to have a bath and scrub him off of her.
Just as she took her phone to call a cab, Noel's name appeared on her screen.
'Hi,' Caroline said, her voice sounding thin and brittle, even to her own ears. The cold air hit her in the face as she stepped out of the police station, a stark contrast to the sterile, suffocating heat of the interview room.
'Caro? Hey' Noel's voice exploded through the speaker, 'You ok?' he sounded happy to hear her.
Caroline closed her eyes. The weight of what had happened, the hallway, the forced surrender, and the long hours before she finally managed to get away, threatened to pull her under. But hearing Noel's voice, so grounded and real, felt like a lifeline.
'Of course I am, what's up?' she managed to say, don't tell him what happened, not just yet and especially not today anyway,
'You didn't forget the invite for tonight? You're coming to dinner, right? Bowie's expecting you to help her with her outfit for this evening, something about sparkly tights and stuff' she could hear him smile on the other side of the line, and the mention of Bowie nagging her Dad about her outfit made her smile too, 'Yeah, I'll be there' she grabbed the lifeline he'd thrown, there was no way she was gonna be alone tonight.
'Excellent' Noel replied, his voice softening with a relief he didn't try to hide. 'Bowie's already got half her wardrobe on the floor. I think there's more glitter in our living room right now than in a craft store. She's been asking every ten minutes if Caroline is coming yet.'
Caroline swallowed hard, the image of the messy, sparkly living room acting as a mental anchor. 'Tell her to save the best pair of tights for me,' she said, her voice steadier now, even as her hand still shook. 'See you tonight'
As she hung up, the silence of the street rushed back in, but it didn't feel quite as heavy. She had a destination, a place with light, a nagging child, which was exactly what she needed to survive the next hour and days. She began to walk, one foot in front of the other, moving away from that disgusting animal and toward the glitter.
