Part 28

19:29, 9 February 2026

The click of the seatbelt was the breaking point.

As Liam pulled the car away from the curb, the silence was punctured by a jagged, hitching breath. Then, the floodgates opened. Caroline didn't just cry; she broke. A raw, guttural sob tore out of her, her whole body convulsing against the upholstery. She curled up, knees pulled toward her chest, her hands clawing at her own sleeves as if trying to peel Rob's touch off her skin.

'It's ok, you're safe now. He's not coming back' he put a gentle hand on her shoulders but she flinched again.

'I'm so sorry, Liam..' she barely had any voice left, 'I didn't report him..to anyone, I don't understand..I'm so so sorry you had to see..all..this' she hiccupped trying to calm down and put on a brave face again which failed miserably.

'Don't you dare apologize,' Liam said, his voice thick and rough. 'You have nothing to be sorry for, Caro. Not for reporting him or not, not for him, not for any of this.'

'But the doctor...' she gasped, a fresh wave of tears blurring her vision as she looked out the side window at the passing streetlights. 'How did he know? The doctor..asked how I got the bruises last time, and I..I told him everything. I didn't say Rob's name..only that he's my best friend..I was scared..how??'

She let out a small, broken sound, half-sob, half-laugh, and tucked her chin deeper into her chest. 'I just wanted it to go away. I just wanted to work and... and be okay.'

'You will be,' Liam promised, his voice dropping to a low, fierce whisper. He slowed the car as they turned onto a quieter street, the engine's hum the only other sound between them. 'But we're done pretending it didn't happen from now on. That fucker needs to stay away from you, god knows what he would have done if I hadn't showed up..I'm taking you back to my place'

She didn't argue. She didn't have the strength left to be independent. She just watched the rain start to smear across the windshield, her breath fogging the glass in small, rhythmic bursts.

The gravel of Liam's driveway crunched under the tires, a grounding sound that signaled the end of the nightmare for tonight. He killed the engine, but neither of them moved. The silence in the car was no longer heavy; it was protective, a small bubble of safety in the dark.

Liam looked over at her. She looked so small, swallowed up by the seat, her eyes fixed on the fogged-up window.

'We're here,' he said softly as he pushed open his door and stepped out into the cool night air, and circled the car to open her door.

He led her inside, the warmth of the house hit her like a physical weight. He didn't take her to the guest room or the couch; he led her straight to the kitchen, instinctively knowing she needed a moment of normalcy, a glass of water, a cup of tea, a talk.

'Sit,' he said, pulling out a chair for her before he put the kettle on and started rummaging through the cupboards to fix her something to drink and nibble. 'You have a lovely house, Liam..' she felt so awkard sitting here in the house of a man who had turned from nemesis to savior almost overnight.

'Thanks, yeah..we love it here, Debs and me' Liam turned to face her, a box of herbal tea in one hand and a sleeve of crackers in the other.

He set a steaming mug of tea in front of her, the scent of chamomile cutting through the faint, lingering smell of Rob's cologne that she couldn't seem to shake. He sat down opposite her, not too close, giving her space to breathe.

Liam sat back, his chair creaking in the quiet kitchen, rubbing the back of his painful neck. He watched her for a moment, letting the warmth of the tea do its work before he leaned in, his expression serious.

'One piece of advice, Caro..report him to the police, that's some aggressive and dangerous company you keep, you know? Do you want to bring all of this to the Christmas table tomorrow ?

Caroline stared into her mug, the chamomile steam dampening her eyelashes. 'Report him?' she whispered, the word sounding heavy. 'I don't even know what I'd say. That is..was..my best friend, Liam, I don't..want any drama to jeopardize any of you or the tour..'

'He's not your friend, Caro. Friends don't leave marks,' Liam said, his voice dropping to a low, fierce gravel. He winced as he shifted, his neck stiffening from the adrenaline comedown. 'And yeah, tomorrow is Christmas Eve. You're planning on sitting across from Noel, passing the salt, pretending not to have chokemarks on your neck, or your arms being black and blue?'

Caroline shook her head, 'you're right, maybe I shouldn't go, I can't subject the kids to all this..after all this is a family gathering..'

Liam let out a slow, ragged breath, his eyes never leaving the darkening shadows on Caroline's skin. 'You think staying home solves it? Caro, think. If you don't show up, Noel is going to be even more suspicious.'

He leaned closer, the kitchen chair groaning under his weight. 'He's already got his radar up because of that 'friend' of yours. If you bail on Christmas Eve, he's going to know something is wrong. He'll come knocking on your door, or worse, he'll start asking questions you aren't ready to answer in front of everyone.'

Caroline looked up, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "But I can't go like this, Liam.'

'Exactly,' Liam said, his voice dropping to a low, urgent rasp. 'Which is why you can't just hide. If you stay away, you're practically handing him the truth on a silver platter. He'll sniff out the fear from miles away. You've got to decide: do I call the police and Noel now and you show him the marks and deal with the fallout now, or do you stay here and wait for him to come find out for himself?'

Caroline's fingers tightened around the mug, the heat barely registering against her numb skin. 'Don't,' she pleaded, her voice a thin, fragile thread. 'Liam, please. If you tell the police... if you tell anyone, it'll blow everything up. The tour, the kids, Noel... I just want it to go away. Let's just keep it our little secret, okay? Just between us.'

Liam leaned back, the kitchen chair letting out a sharp, discordant creak. He looked at her, his eyes dark with a mix of fury and profound exhaustion. 'Our secret?' he repeated, the words sounding bitter. 'Caro, secrets like this don't stay small. They grow. They rot.'

He gestured vaguely toward the hallway, where the festive decorations felt suddenly mocking. 'You think you're protecting Noel by staying quiet? You're not. If you show up tomorrow and he catches even a glimpse of those marks, he's going to lose it. And if you don't show up, he's going to be even more suspicious. He knows you better than anyone. He'll know you're hiding, and he won't stop until he finds out what from.'

Liam winced as a sharp pain shot through his neck, a reminder of the night's adrenaline. 'And by keeping me quiet, you're just making me a co-conspirator in your own disappearance. I can't sit there at dinner, watching him look at you, knowing what I know, and just..pretend nothing happened?'

'I don't mean to be so dramatic but I have nobody, Liam,' she choked out, the admission finally breaking through the dam. 'My parents are gone, I have no family left.' She looked at him, her eyes raw and hollow. 'The only person I thought I could trust, the only real friend I had outside of this circle... he beat me and tried to rape me.'

The silence that followed was suffocating. Liam's jaw tightened so hard it looked like stone, his protective instincts warring with the devastating weight of her confession. He had known it was bad, but the word rape hung in the air like a poisonous fog.

'That's why I can't tell Noel,' she whispered, her voice trembling. 'I'm just one of his employees, with a very responsible job, I take a hundred decisions every hour of every single day and if he finds out my judgment was that bad, that I let someone like that into my life, I'll risk losing my job too. I just need time, Liam. Please. Don't take the only thing I have left, my job, away from me by making this public.'

Liam closed his eyes, leaning his forehead into his hand. The burden of her secret was now a crushing weight on his chest. He knew that by staying silent, he was helping her hide a monster, but looking at her shattered expression, he realized she wasn't just afraid of the police, or Noel, she was terrified of being alone.

Liam's face hardened, a pained shadow crossing his eyes. He didn't look away. 'You're asking me to lie to my brother, Caro. Think about that,' he said, his voice straining with the effort to stay calm. 'Noel is my family. We spent years tearing each other apart, and we only just got back together, we only found our way back to being brothers because of you.'

He stood up slowly, leaning his hands on the kitchen table, his stiff neck flaring with pain. 'You're the bridge between us. And now you're asking me to stand on that bridge and look him in the eye while I hide the fact that you were assaulted a second time. You know how difficult this is, don't you? You're putting me in a position where I have to choose between your silence and my loyalty to him.'

He took a jagged breath. 'If he finds out I knew, and he will find out, because secrets like this have a way of screaming when you're trying to whisper, it won't just be about what that bastard did to you. It'll be about the fact that his brother and his PA kept him in the dark. You're asking me to risk the relationship with my brother and I can't and I won't risk all that again, sorry.'

The reality of his words hit her harder than any physical blow ever could. The realization that she was forcing Liam to choose between her and his own flesh and blood, the brother he had only just found his way back to, was the breaking point.

Caroline pushed her chair back with a harsh, scraping sound. 'You're right, Liam, you're absolutely right, this whole Rob situation seemed to have knocked all sense of reason out of me' she whispered, tucking her trembling hands into the sleeves of her coat. 'It's too much to ask. I can't put this on you. I understand, I really do.'

She stood up, her movements stiff and uncertain. She didn't look back at the tea, which now sat cold and forgotten on the table. 'I'll just leave. If I'm not there tomorrow night, just tell Noel I'm sick, or that I... that I needed some space. It doesn't matter. I don't want to be the reason you two lose each other again.' She grabbed her phone and searched for the cab company's number, her vision blurred by tears she refused to let fall. 'I'm sorry, Liam. For everything.'

As she walked toward the door, she felt the ache in her arms and neck with every movement, a bitter reminder of the loneliness waiting for her outside this warm kitchen.

Liam was too shocked to react instantly, he got up and said 'Caroline! Stay! Where are you going?' but he was already talking to her back as she put her phone to her ear and heard her call a cab and out the door she went.
