Chapter 2 - Fire Between Us
13:46, 28 September 2025The next morning, Jay Jay woke up with the taste of last night still on her lips.
Not the cafeteria food. Not the bitter coffee she'd forced down while cramming her history notes.
Kiefer.
She buried her face in her pillow and groaned. "What the hell am I doing?"
The memory of his confession replayed like a broken tape — his family, the threats, his desperation. Then the kisses, both rough and soft, enough to unravel the careful knots she'd tied around her heart.
She shouldn't forgive him this easily. She shouldn't want him this much. And yet... she did.
By the time she reached school, her nerves were shot. Section E was already huddled in their usual spot by the courtyard, bickering like always. Mika spotted her first.
"Well, well, look who survived the hospital and came back glowing."
Jay Jay shot her a glare. "Shut up."
"Oh my god, you did something!" Mika gasped, eyes widening. "You're blushing!"
Risa leaned in, grinning. "Spill. Who's the lucky—"
Jay Jay shoved past them. "Don't you have math homework to cry about?"
But her mistake was glancing toward the benches.
Because that was where Kiefer sat, lazily spinning a pen between his fingers, legs stretched out like he owned the sun. And when his eyes lifted to meet hers, the smirk that curved his mouth was slow. Dangerous. Private.
Jay Jay's heart tripped over itself.
Mika's jaw dropped. "Oh my god."
"Holy crap," Gio muttered. "Did we just witness a whole conversation without words?"
Jay Jay whirled on them. "Stop. Talking."
Kiefer stood, sliding the pen into his pocket, and strolled over like he had all the time in the world. His voice was low, meant only for her. "Morning, Jay."
Her throat went dry. "Don't."
"Don't what?" His grin widened.
"Don't say my name like that."
"Like what?" he teased.
"Like you..." she faltered. "...like you have the right."
Kiefer leaned close, his breath warm against her ear. "After last night, I think I do."
Jay Jay's knees nearly buckled. She shoved him back, face blazing. "You're insufferable."
"And you're terrible at pretending you don't like it."
Section E collectively exploded. Mika screeched, Gio slapped Yuri's shoulder, and Risa nearly dropped her water bottle. Even Angelo, sitting at the far end with a book, raised a brow, though he kept his thoughts to himself.
Yuri's eyes, however, were sharp. Calculating. He didn't join in the teasing. He just watched.
Jay Jay stormed toward the library, muttering under her breath. Of course, Kiefer followed.
Inside the quiet, dusty space, she spun on him. "You're going to ruin everything."
"Everything's already ruined," Kiefer said simply. "I'd rather rebuild it with you."
Her chest squeezed. "You can't just say things like that."
"Why not?" He stepped closer, trapping her against the shelf. "Do you want me to lie instead?"
"Kiefer..." Her voice shook.
"Say it," he demanded softly. "Say you don't feel the same."
Jay Jay opened her mouth. Closed it. Tried again. But the words tangled in her throat, because the truth was clawing its way out.
Instead of speaking, she grabbed his shirt and kissed him.
This time, it wasn't angry. It wasn't desperate. It was heat.
His hands slammed against the shelf on either side of her, then slid to her waist, pulling her flush against him. She gasped into his mouth, and he deepened the kiss, tilting his head, lips hungry. Her fingers tangled in his hair, tugging hard enough to make him groan.
The sound went straight through her.
"Kiefer..." she whispered when they broke apart, panting.
"Yeah?" His forehead pressed against hers, his thumb brushing her jaw.
"This is insane."
"Yeah," he admitted, voice rough. "But so are we."
She kissed him again, slower this time, savoring. His lips tasted like mint gum and trouble, and she was addicted.
When they finally pulled away, both trembling, Jay Jay shoved him lightly. "We can't keep doing this in public."
Kiefer's smirk returned. "So... private then?"
Her face heated. "You're impossible."
"And you're stuck with me."
⸻
The rest of the day was torture. Section E kept whispering, Yuri kept glaring, and Jay Jay kept replaying the library kiss. By the time the final bell rang, she was a mess of nerves and want.
And when Kiefer cornered her near the back exit, smirk gone, eyes dark with intent, she knew she was in trouble.
"You're coming with me," he said simply.
Before she could argue, his hand slipped into hers, warm and firm, and she didn't pull away.
