Chapter 17
23:34, 11 February 2015Katniss' POVIt's been four months since we came back from the Capitol. Gale moved back to District 2, since he had more jobs to do, so we don't have to care about him messing with Peeta anymore. I've moved into Peeta's house, since my house reminds me too much of Primrose. I am not able to call her what I used to call her anymore. It hurts too much to only say 'Prim'. I can feel myself shaking a bit, when I think about her name. It's like 'Prim' and 'Primrose' are two different people.
But even if Primrose was still alive, I could never stay there after I was attacked by that black shadow. Before I moved in with Peeta, I'd always wake up in the middle of the night, screaming and crying from the nightmares, and I'd call Peeta, making him come over to me.
But now, I feel Peeta's arms wrapping around me, comforting my shaky body. He turns me around, causing me to look into his beautiful, blue eyes. Every time I see and feel him, all I can think about is the kiss on the beach in the arena. One of our last kisses. One of the only kisses where I felt something.
"Are you okay?" He softly asks. I nod.
"Are you sure?" He once again asks. Instead of saying anything, I snuggle into his chest, my nose taking in the scent of cotton and bread. His shirt is soft against my face, and it makes me feel safe and comfortable. When my whole body is as close to him as it can come, I feel a pleasant smile creeping on my face. His big arms wrap around me.
---
I walk into the kitchen, as a nice smell of newly baked bread hits my nostrils.
"Hellooo," I say, playfully dragging out the 'o'.
"Hellooo," Peeta relipes, mimicking my voice.
"How'd you sleep?" He asks, making his way over to me. It's been like this for a long time. Flirting and stuff. But none of us wants to make the first move. Well, maybe I am the only one who wants to make a move. I still don't know how Peeta even feels about me.
I hop onto the counter, and pull Peeta over to me. He positions himself inbetween my legs. I stretch my arms over his shoulders, crossing my left wrist over my right. Peeta rests his hands, partly on my hips, partly on my thighs. He slowly leans in, seductively whispering:
"Would you like some bread, Katniss?"
I can't help but laugh at his comment.
"Oh, so now you're laughing at me?" He asks teasingly, pulling away from me.And before I know it, I am thrown over is shoulder.
"Peeta! Peeta, put me down!" I squeal, trying not to die of laughter.
He spins around, making me dizzy. Then, he runs into the living room, throwing me down onto the couch.
He then gets on top of me, crawling towards my face. I can't help but laugh a little bit at this. This moment is so perfect, and I think that I am finally getting what I want. When his face is hovering over mine, I wrap my arms around his neck, letting my fingers run through the hair on the back of his head.
His face is looking at me with a mix of a lovingly and a seductive look. I smile so much at his expression, that a little giggle slips out. I never giggled before, but these past few months has been different. Everything is different, for the better, that is.
"You just can't stop laughing at me today. Am I really that ugly?" He jokes.
"No., you're pretty handsome today, actually," I respond.
He smiles at me, and then his face moves slowly moves down to mine, letting me prepare for what is coming.
When our lips almost can't be any closer, before touching, I smell something. A burning smell.
"Peeta, did you remember to take the bread out of the oven?" I ask.
"OH MY GOD, THE BREAD!" He screams, literally rolling off of the couch, running into the kitchen. I follow him. Just as I enter the kitchen, he is opening the oven, and smoke comes out of it.
The bread is burned.
"And I thought that you were a good baker," I tease him.
"It's pretty hard when you're distracting me," he teases me back.
"When what are we going to get for breakfast?" I groan, feeling the hunger in my stomach.
Peeta smirks, before saying: "To the bakery."
---
When we enter the bakery, Panna looks up, and runs over to greet us with hugs.
"Panna, chill. We were here two days ago," Peeta laughs, throwing his arms around her. She then turns to me, and we embrace each other. We've become really good friends over the last four months.
"I don't caaaare, Peeta! I still get lonely."
"You know you're allowed to have other friends, right?" Peeta raises an eyebrow at her. "And take time off."
"I know, Peeta. Anyways, what is bringing you two here today?" She asks.
"Peeta burned the bre-" I am cut off by Peeta's hand covering my mouth. I decide to playfully bite him.
"Ouch! What was that for?" He whines.
"For cutting me off," I grin at him.
"Okay, you're weird.. Anyways, the cupcakes that we talked about?" Peeta says, turning to Panna.
Panna's eyes widen, look at Peeta and then at me, before storming to the back. After a couple of seconds, she comes back with a box in her hand. She hands them to Peeta, and says:
"Don't mess this up, Peeta." Then she winks at him, and I feel Peeta's fingers lock with mine. We head towards the door, and Peeta lifts our intertwined hands up, stretching his fingers to a wave. I smile at Panna, before Peeta drags me out of the bakery.
The August heat hits me, followed by a slight breeze, playing with my hair.
---
We walk to the meadow, that's been replaced with a park, made for the fallen tributes of District 12, and all the Rebels from District 12. There are signs everywhere, that says a little about all the Victors, Tributes and Rebels. I spot an odd one, that sends shivers down my spine.
It says:
Name: Peeta Mellark.Age: 18Title: Tribute/Victor/Rebel.Mental Stage: Hijacked.Fate: Alive.Relatives: Five Alive.
Five alive? What does that even mean? His whole family is dead. Before he can see this, I aggressively pull him away from the sign. He hasn't had a flashback since that night where all that stuff happened with his ankle and all that, and I am not planning on it happening now.
"Did you see that?" He asks, when I've pulled him away.
"Saw what?" I ask innocently.
"I think I saw a sign with my name on it," he says, looking back over his shoulder.
"No, I didn't see it," I answer harshly. "And, besides, what is going to be there that we don't already know? It's not like there's some weird secret about you that we don't know anything about."
"Maybe something mean," he shrugs.
"Who could possibly write something mean about you?" I ask, rasing an eyebrow.
"I don't know, maybe that I tried to kill my fake fiancè?" He answers coldly.
"I don't think that they would," I mumble, not knowing what else to respond. As those words leave his lips, I can once again feel his hands locked around my neck, when I first saw him after months, and the confusion that I got from it.
---
Peeta shows me a little secluded area that he apparently found at some point. There's an arch with flowers wrapping around it. It's a little spot with a lake and willow trees. Bushes are surrounding it, making it private. The grass is covered with dandelions and daises.
He walks me over to a beautiful willow tree. He slumps down on the ground, leaning against the tree trunk. He grabs my wrist, and pulls me down to him. I place myself on top of his lap, gaining a small chuckle from him. I must admit, I kinda love it when he chuckles. The way his whole body bounces a little with pure happiness, joyful, bright eyes, and a light voice, makes me wanna just cuddle into him, as far as I can come, until my body would be buried in his.
"I'm hungry," I say, smiling widely. My favorite thing in the whole world, is when Panna and Peeta bake together. They create legit art. When you take a bite, it's like a ball of colors, exploding in your mouth, making you feel eternally happy and grateful. And I am not even exaggerating. I am one hundred percent serious.
Peeta pulls out the box, and reveal some beautifully decorated cupcakes.
"They look delicious, Peeta!" I burst out, smiling widely at the baked goods.
"Then try one," Peeta says, picking up one with pink frosting. Next thing I know, it has been smeared out, all over my face.
"Peeta!" I squeal, licking my face, trying to get the frosting off. It's amazing. Strawberry frosting. I grab the cupcake out of Peeta's hand, that seems to be a vanilla cake, and drag it around my face, scooping the frosting back onto the cake, instead of my face. Peeta brings one of his fingers up to my face as well, taking a little frosting on it, before licking it off again.
"Ew," I mock him. "You're doing the exact same," he defends himself.
His look is being drawn from me, to a couple of mockingjays landing in front of us. All the sudden, he starts whistling, and the birds copies him. He picks up another cupcake, breaks it into tiny pieces, and throws it to the birds. I can't help but just.. stare at him. I know, I know, it sounds pretty creepy, but seeing him like this.. Like himself, makes me so eternally happy.
I sneak my hand into the box of cupcakes, searching after the perfect cupcake for revenge. My fingers lock around one with chocolate. Perfect. I carefully pick it up, making sure not to make any noise. And then I attack. I almost slap him with the cupcake, and smear it all over his face.
"Katniss, what are you doing?!" He exclaims, trying to avoid my attack.
"Revenge!" I laugh, smearing the cupcake, until there isn't anymore frosting left. After that, both of us just burst out into laughter.
When he starts wiping off the frosting, we're still laughing.
"Did I get everything?" he asks, still laughing.
"Wait, let me- let me, check," I say inbetween laughs. "Oh, no, you got a little on your lip, let me get it for you," I say, placing my thumb on his lips.
His lips.
His lips.
His lips.
Both of us stops laughing, concentrated in what's happening. I can't take my eyes, or my thumb, off his lips. That smooth, soft surface, that I once owned. In fact, I'm the only one who has ever owned them. And I want to own them again. So bad. I want them to be my property. Mine only.
I look once up into his eyes, searching for a sign, not to do what I am about to do. That it is suicide to even try. But he is looking at my lips, just as intensely as I was looking at his.
I crash my lips onto his, feeling them naturally following each other.
I feel it again, that thing that overtook me on the beach. That special feeling of hunger, that just wants more and more and more, never satisfied. It's probably the most selfish feeling in the universe.
But it's stronger this time around. Maybe having to wait for so long for this to happen, is why this is so strong. Maybe because of all the shit we had to go through to get to this point.
When we break away, way too soon for my liking, our foreheads are resting against each other, Peeta holding me tightly.
He breaks the silence, whispering with a shaky voice:
"You love me. Real or not real?"
