2-Bonfire
05:55, 30 March 2017"Rise and shine!" I heard a voice yell out as they pulled the covers of a blanket off me. I slowly opened my eyes to see the the skinny blond boy once again. Man he has got to stop being everywhere.
"What happened? Where am I? Who are you? How long have I been out for?" I asked as I sat up from the bed. The blond boy looked at me confused.
"You don't remember what happened yesterday?" he asked as he came closer to me. I shook my head, "I only remember screaming and being carried out the box" I said rubbing the temples of my forehead. Faintly remembering a boy's face, but didn't bother informing the boy.
"Well get up and get ready." He said handing me a box, "We peeked inside just to see." he said with getting a little red in the face. "By the way my name's Newt. Do you remember your name?" he asked.
My name? What was my name? Nothing was coming up. My lips moved to answer, but no sound came out. "It's fine. Some greenies don't remember until a few days later." he said smiling and left me to get ready.
After 5 minutes, I finally stepped out the room, to be met with the boy Newt once again. "Let's go. Alby is waiting for you." he said and led me to another building, "Stay here." he instructed and went directly to the dark skinned boy who had his back to me. After quietly talking to one another, they both turned to look at me and then continue their conversation. Soon after, Newt signaled me to come towards them. I cautiously made my way over, and finally stood in front the both of them.
"So you don't remember anything from last night?" the dark skinned boy asked, who I assumed was Alby. "No. I already told everything to Newt boy here. Asking me over and over again isn't going to suddenly help me remember whatever it is that you want me to remember! I don't even know my own name!" I shouted in hysteria. I might have came off a little crazy, but not knowing who the heck I am was driving me insane.
"Alright calm down." he said. "Every greenie goes through this when they first get here. You'll get your name back soon, but don't you think that for a second I'll let what happened last night to happen again. We have rules here." he said frowning the entire time.
"I'm the leader here, Alby is the name. We only got three rules that everyone follows whether they like it or not. One, everyone does their part, no slackers or you'll spend a night or two in the slammer. Two, never ever hurt another glader. Three, never go into the maze, unless you're a runner." Alby said glaring at me as he said the last rule.
"Now, I'll be giving you the tour around the glade." Newt said smiling as whisked me away from the scowling Alby. The tour went by fast, and I quickly picked up things of how the glade worked. Newt was surprised at how fast I was able to understand things, because as he said, "Greenies usually take a while to understand everything." Just as the tour was ending, Newt brought me back to one of the open doors to the maze.
"Yesterday you ran over here, and was crying after you saw Minho." he said as a drift of wind came from the passageway blowing my hair away from my face. Confusion weighed heavily in my heart as I tried to remember what they were trying to remind me of last night's event.
"Every night these doors close. That's the only thing that keeps us safe from those things." he said frowning, and turned to me.
"What's out there?" I asked meeting his gaze. "Grievers." He said and led me away from the doors to continue with the tour.
By the time Newt was finished giving me the tour, it was about time for dinner. "Well let's go eat. I'm pretty sure you're hungry since you haven't ate a thing yesterday." he said and we headed towards the kitchen. "Lucky you. Frypan decided to cook bacon today." Newt said giving me a crooked smile and led me to a table that Alby and other boys were sitting at.
"Look who's here! Greenie go ahead and sit next to lover boy here." a boy with weird eyebrows said smirking pointing to the empty seat next to the Asian boy.
"Slim it." the Asian boy said as he bit into a bacon piece. Turning away from my gaze that lingered upon him until Newt's voice spoke.
"Take a seat. I'll go and grab you a plate." Newt said as he pushed me to sit next to the Asian boy. "Be nice Minho, she doesn't remember what took place last night." he said before leaving me with the group of boys that silently stared at her.
"Could you all stop staring. You're making me feel uncomfortable." I said pouting a little bit, and most of the boys turned away their gazes and went back to eating and previous conversations. The weird eyebrow boy got up and went towards a different group of boys. He seemed much more cheerful over there than he was sitting here.
"Here you go." Newt said placing a plate full of food before me and sat across from me. I quickly dug into the food before me. I didn't know how hungry I was until he had set the plate in front of me. "Yummy." I said smiling and I stuffed a piece of bacon into my mouth.
"Glad to hear that you like my cooking." a boy said holding a spatula. "Frypan is the name. Still don't remember your name greenie?" he asked. I shook my head, and watched as he shrugged and went back the way Newt had just come from.
"So greenie can smile, huh? Looked better when you were crying." Minho said sarcastically beside me. I turned to look at him, and he quickly avoided my eyes. "Yeah. What's it to you? Can't smile?" I asked tilting my head, and the boys around us broke out laughing.
"Slim it!" Minho said, but the boys kept laughing. Even Alby cracked a smile. I've only seen him frowning ever since I got here.
"Minho, I guess you've finally found someone who doesn't give a klunk about your sarcastic jokes." Newt said and moved to sit next to me. So this was Minho that I was crying over when I first got here.
"I don't understand why I would cry over you?" I suddenly said out loud and quickly covered my mouth as Minho quickly turned to look over at me.
"Maybe cause I'm just that good looking, and you fell for me." Minho said with a smirk plastered on his face. I cringed at his cheesy lines he was spouting out. "No. I'm pretty sure it's not that." I said, and again the boys broke out into laughter.
"Man I haven't had a good laugh like this in a long time. I like you greenie." Newt said patting my back and finished the last bits of his food. Suddenly Minho stood up and left, of course bumping into me harshly while doing so. What's his problem? Could have at least said a simple sorry.
After dinner, Newt led me to the showers. "I'll stand guard here. Since you are the only girl here, I'm pretty sure you picked up a lot of hormonal boys that haven't seen a girl in about two years. But you're also very pretty, to bad we don't have mirrors here to see what ourselves look like." He said smiling and left me to guard the door.
I slowly peeled off the clothes that I was wearing since I first arrived here. I stood under the warm water that washed away all the dirt and sweat. I looked at my pale skin, and black hair. I traced my face to get a gist of how I thought I looked like. It was no use. After finishing my shower and changing into new clothes. The shirt was a little loose on me, but whenever a breeze came through the glade, the soft fabric brushing against my skin felt cooling.
"Come one now, we're starting our bonfire for you greenie. It's a tradition for every new greenie that we get." Newt said as we walked together.
"Why the name greenie? Is it just something you call me since I don't remember my name?" I asked. He chuckled and shook his head. "We call every new person that gets sent through that box to us a greenie. It stops when a new greenie gets sent. They send one every month. You just happened to come along with our weekly supplies that the creators send us." Newt said as we were getting closer to the bonfire.
"Well if it isn't the guest of honor!" the weird eyebrow boy shouted as I stood before him. "Don't even think about it you shank." Newt said as he grabbed the bottle that the boy was about to hand you. "Alright." he said slowly backing up and left the two of you alone.
"What's that?" I asked.
"Gally's secret recipe." Newt said.
"Gally? Was he the boy that just here?" I asked looking at the strangely colored liquid, curious as to what it tasted like. Newt nodded and drank from the bottle. "So why are you drinking it then?" I said frowning. He chuckled and put an arm around my neck. And led me to a empty log to sit.
"Wait here." He said leaving. Newt must have forgotten, but he left the strangely colored bottle beside me. The curious me decided to pick up the bottle and take a sip from it. It went down smoothly, but the taste was another story. I continued to drink the rest of what was left, because why not? Bad idea I tell you. Next thing I started to feel funny, my temperature was rising. I could feel my cheeks heating up.
I know Newt told me to wait here, but I got up and decided to explore this bonfire that they were throwing for me. I walked towards a huge group of boys that were shouting and cheering. As I approached the boys made way for me to get to the front of the crowd. I saw the boy Gally and another glader fighting in a poorly made, circled ring. Wasn't this against the rules?
"What you doing here greenie?" a voice said from beside me. It was Alby. "I don't know, but whatever this drink is. Are you sure it isn't poison?" I said standing up a little wobbly, but Alby caught me and held my arm steadying me.
He chuckled, "That's not poison. I'm sure. But I recommend you don't drink anymore." he said and started leading me to the homestead. Along the way we met Minho and Alby told him to take me to rest in one of the beds.
While walking, I kept stumbling and my vision getting a little blurry. "Hey greenie you alright?" Minho asked. I giggled and tightened my grip on his arm to steady myself, "Of course I am! I'm smiling aren't I?" I said chuckling as he gave me a weird look.
"You drank Gally's secret recipe didn't you?" he said raising an eyebrow. I nodded happily, and tripped on my feet, about to fall to the ground, but Minho caught me. "You're such a newbie." he said and picked me up bridal style and quickly made way to the homestead.
He took me to a room that had a door, and gently placed me on the bed. "Rest up greenie. Tomorrow you have lots of work." he said leaving, but I grabbed him by his wrist.
"Don't leave me. Not again." I whispered with tears spilling from my eyes. I didn't know why I cried, but the tears kept coming. What happened afterwards I don't remember, because I had blacked out.
