18:45, 20 June 2025The boys were scattered across the house.
Colby had crashed on the living room couch, phone slipping from his hand mid-scroll.Chris and Nick were in a half-argument about whether Danish pastries in Denmark were just called "pastries."Matt was outside on the back steps, hoodie up, head tilted toward the stars.
And Sam...Sam was alone in his room.Door closed.Voice memos app open.
No background music. No script.Just his voice.
⸻
📲 Voice Memo – 1:13 minutes long – Sent directly to Melinda
"I, um...Hey. It's Sam.You probably figured that out already."
"I just... I didn't know what to say at first. You didn't just respond, you... you saw me.And I'm not used to that without it being about what I do online or what I used to be. So thank you."
"I didn't think anyone meant it when they said I could call. You did. I can feel that."
"And for the record...You're the kind of person people write books about. Not just because you care. But because you care out loud. With no agenda. That's rare."
"Anyway...I'm not crying.You're crying."
[pause – soft breath]
"Just...Thank you for giving me a version of myself that feels...worthy."
"Sweet girl.I'll talk to you soon."
⸻
He hit send.
Then immediately threw his phone face-down on the bed and flopped backward like he just confessed murder.
⸻
Matt (from outside the room):"You good in there, Romeo?"
Sam: groaning into a pillow"I just sent her a voice memo."
Chris (calling from the hallway):"How long was it?"
Sam:"...A minute."
Nick:"Oh, you like her like her."
⸻
Colby opened the door slowly.Just looked at Sam.Didn't say anything.
Then nodded.
Colby (soft):"She's gonna keep that forever, you know."
Sam (quiet):"I hope she does."
⸻
Because for the first time in a long time,Sam didn't feel like he had to prove anything. Not to the internet. Not to the people watching. Not even to himself.
She already saw him.She just needed to know he saw her back.
And now she does.
