20:10, 20 March 2021McGonagall and Snape stood in front of me, an old-looking, dark necklace — blue crystals decorating it — hovering mid-air between the two professors. They eyed it cautiously, worry written all over their faces.
"Hayes," Snape spoke slowly, gently guiding the necklace back into the case it was found in. "You've spent the last three hours in detention, correct?" His eyes were narrowed, greasy hair hanging into his face as he turned around to face me.
His eyes flickered over to the brunette boy several feet to my right, seemingly just as annoyed as I was that Potter was still standing next to me.
Professor McGonagall and I entered the room at the same time his two minions left it.
Must be a perk of being the chosen one, that he got to stay.
"Yes, sir." Brows knitted together tightly in confusion, my eyes scanned their expressions; something was definitely wrong.
With the worried frown on McGonagall's face and the way Potter was restlessly tapping his foot against the floors, fixing his glasses on top of his nose every few seconds, it was obvious something had happened.
But what did it have to do with me?
"And you served said detention with Mr. Malfoy?"
Again, I nodded. "I did."
His eyes flickered over to Potter once more, eyebrows raised in an 'I told you so'-manner. "And did he behave... strange, in any way?"
"Strange?" I repeated his words, my mind racing to find anything I could accuse him of to get back at him for that detention. I didn't know why they were asking about him, but it seemed to be the perfect opportunity.
McGonagall observed our conversation carefully, standing next to the Gryffindor boy, her eyes peering over the frames of her glasses.
"No," I shook my head, a little disheartened by the fact he did, unfortunately, not act strange. At all.
Potter grew even more restless beside me, unconsciously straightening his glasses with every answer I gave to calm himself down.
"And did he slip away at any point during those three hours?"
I rolled my eyes this time, growing tired rather quickly of this interrogation that wasn't even about me in the first place. Instead of dismissing Malfoy, she could've sent him in here to answer for himself.
"No," I said once more. "Why are you asking me about him, anyway—?"
I hardly got to finish my sentence when I was interrupted by a sharp hiss. Potter's eyes not on me but instead directed at his head of house.
"Professor—" He almost pleaded, though his voice was stern as he addressed her. "It was Malfoy. I know it was. As far as we know, they could've done it together. Everyone knows about—"
"Knows about what?" I cut him off swiftly, my voice calm, but by the look on his face, the threatening undertone didn't go unnoticed by him. Before I let him answer, I shook my head dismissively. "What is he even doing here?" I asked instead, looking straight ahead at Snape again.
Both professors ignored my inquiry.
"We're asking about Mr. Malfoy because Potter can't seem to fathom the idea of him being in detention," Snape informed, eyes narrowed. "This afternoon, while both you and him were serving your detention with professor McGonagall, somebody tried to commit a heinous crime. The second of its kind in the past week."
I thought long and hard, wondering if I was so out of it, I forgot I had set up another trap that would cost Dumbledore his life. My eyes flickered over to the necklace on the desk behind him, lingering on it for a few moments.
It couldn't be. I've never seen that piece of jewellery in my life.
"And..." I began, stopping myself and rethinking my choice of words. Any wrong move and all the fingers could be pointed at me next. I'd rather have it be Malfoy until I figured out who actually failed to do what I've been failing at, too. "And what does this have to do with Malfoy?"
"Merlin's beard!" the boy muttered under his breath at the question, making my eyes snap in his direction. "Because it was him! He cursed Katie to bring Dumbledore the necklace—! I saw him buy it—!" For a moment, it seemed he had forgotten about the two professors standing with us, but he was quickly reminded of them as McGonagall's sharp voice cut through the room.
"Potter!" She interrupted him harshly, finally losing her patience with him. A proud smirk found its way to my lips, the brunette being the only one who spotted it; only irritating him further. "This will be the end of it! I don't want to hear another wild accusation out of anyone's mouth until they can bring solid proof to support it," She demanded. "We cannot go around accusing every person who's walked into the shop this necklace might have been purchased from."
When his mouth opened to protest, it was Snape who cut him off swiftly.
"'I just know' is not solid proof, Potter," He warned, voice monotone, though threatening enough to shut him up.
"I suggest you go back to your dormitories. Both of you," McGonagall added, shaking her head at the boy before dismissing us.
I didn't think I wanted to spend another second in a room with any of them, anyway. So, with a polite nod, head held high and back straight, I turned around and left. Noticing Potter right on my heel.
As soon as I heard the door close behind us, I turned towards him; not missing both Granger and Weasley stood against the opposite wall, waiting for their friend.
He spoke before I got the chance to.
"I know what you did." His voice was low, drained of any emotion as the words left his mouth. There were a lot of things he could know that would be better off if he didn't— I wasn't quite sure which of those he was referring to.
And, though my heart skipped a single beat, I just casually tilted my head slightly, looking at him with innocent, wide eyes, an almost mocking expression in them. "And what's that?"
"I know you were in Hogsmeade last weekend. I know you were there without anyone's permission," He took a deep breath before the following words left his mouth. "And I know you were meeting your death-eater of a father there, too—"
The challenging gleam in his eyes faded as soon as his back hit the wall behind him forcefully. Taking note of Granger's single squeal of surprise behind me, my attention was still on him.
A cruel smile spread across my face, my arm against his throat holding him still against the stone.
"What?" I asked in amusement, head tilted once more. "I don't think I've seen the chosen one speechless before," I laughed lowly, blowing a single strand of red hair out of my face and watching him twitch as the forceful gust of air hit his cheek.
He swallowed thickly, eyes scanning my face as his teeth gritted together in anger and his jaw clenched. "You know he did it," He growled lowly, and I laughed once more.
"I hardly even know what happened," I snapped back, demeanour serious again. "What I do know is that I just served a detention with him—"
"Your mother is in Azkaban because of his father."
My brows furrowed, pressure on his throat increasing.
"Let me make this perfectly clear for you," I seethed, all signs of amusement or playfulness gone. "Keep my family's name out of your mouth."
My nose scrunched up in anger as the words left my mouth, sounding as deadly as that poison itself as it slipped past my lips. "Or would you rather have Malfoy break your nose again, and again—" I took my time enunciating the word. "—and again until you understand not to stick it into things that don't concern you, Potter?" I huffed.
I shoved him against the stone once more, a gust of air escaping his lips at the impact. "Or better yet, how about I do it, this time?" I asked innocently. "Would you like that better?"
He groaned in annoyance and anger at the words, and with a victorious smile, I let go of him at once, taking a step back as soon as I did.
Both Granger and Weasley were by his side as soon as I distanced myself, asking if he was alright and sending me glares so deathly I almost had to laugh.
"I hope we understand each other better now, Potter."
With that, I turned around to get back to the dungeons, only one thing on my mind;
If it wasn't me who tried to murder Dumbledore today, who was it?
