Chapter 2

He keeps dragging me to our bedroom. I can only take a deep breath and hold my stomach, pretend that I hold my baby. Stay strong, dear. When my husband looks at me for a second, I can see his eyes fall on the hand I place on where my baby is. Eventually he loosens his grip around my arm. Once we're in our bedroom, my husband lets out a long exhale and sits on our bed. As he ruffles his hair, his lips are moving although nothing comes out, as if picking up the right words for me.

I close the door to our room and make my way towards my husband. I remove his tie and stroke his hair.

"I'm sorry." is the only word I'm able to say to start our conversation.

He looks into my eyes. And what comes out of him makes me back away a little. "WHAT AN INCAPABLE WIFE!!!!"

"You said you'll protect and love him as your own son. In fact when he got sick, and kept calling your name, you were nowhere around him. What were you doing this whole day, huh?! WHERE THE HECK WERE YOU GOING?! Mom tried to call you but never once you pick it up!! I was wrong about you, I thought you were the right one for me and my son. I should've listen to mother, that marrying someone far younger is a mistake!! HOW IRRESPONSIBLE!! If only Doyoon didn't die in childbirth, he should have been a perfect mother for my son!"

He keeps throwing tantrums and curses at me. What did mother just tell him?

"Are you done? Don't you want to hear my explanation first?" my voice stuck in my throat. My eyes sting as I hold back my tears, but I will never shed a tear for all those insults.

"All this year with you, I always tried to give both you and Mingyu the best. I tried to become a good mother and wife for you and Mingyu. It's true that I'm still too young and not as perfect as your former wife, but still I try and try. Please help me reach that perfection, don't just blame everything on me." My tears eventually fall.

"What did mother say to you? That Doyoon was a lot better compared to me? I don't need to explain what I did today, it's just useless, you will never believe in me. In your eyes now I'm just a flawed one that could never be compared to your former wife, who is the very definition of perfect. I'm sorry I could never be as perfect as you wish for. He rose from the bed, reaching to where I stand, where my back is already on our room's door. I never take his hand, my sight becomes blurry for the tears and my head starts to ache. I quickly turn around and pull the knob of our door. Half running I go to Mingyu's room. I don't care if my mother-in-law heard us arguing. Once I'm arrived in Mingyus room, I beg mother to leave the room.

"You can go home, mother. I'll take care of Mingyu." Without word she leaves Mingyu's room after seeing my messed up state. I lay myself down on my son's bed. I hug his small figure, and kiss his cheek.

"Let's sleep with mom tonight, dear."

Mingyu suddenly opens his eyes and softly whispers "Mom...I love you."

"I love you too, baby."
