Chapter 43
23:44, 28 March 2020"Don't touch her. She might have a spinal injury." Hank said.
He leaned down next to her. There was blood on the locker directly behind her, implicating that she had been flung against it. She was alive, but barely.
Sean and Leslie were instructed to keep Adam and Kim away from the area.
"That better not be Hannah!" Kim yelled.
"This isn't where you need to be right now." Hank put an arm up so she couldn't pass
"That better not be who I think it is..." Adam said, walking over to her. Hank stepped back and Adam leaned down next to her.
"Daddy's here." He took her free hand in his and squeezed it.
"I'm scared." She was shaking.
"What happened?"
"I was hoping you could tell me that."
"I was going to my locker to get my crayons. I heard a loud noise. Then I was on the floor and something fell on my arm."
He threw the cement block off her.
"My head hurts daddy." She was tearing up.
"Does it ache? Is it sore?"
"It stings."
He moved the hat from her head. Her head had a large gash in it and was bleeding.
"Here." He took off his coat and covered her forehead with it.
She was groaning in pain. Adam squeezed her hand tighter.
"It hurts daddy." Tears were streaming down her face.
"I know baby girl, I know."
"Can you pick me up? Please?"
"I can't."
Her lips started trembling. "Why not?"
"You might have a spinal injury."
"A what?"
"Your back might be hurt really bad. I can't move you until the ambulance gets here."
"Don't you love me?"
"Of course I do."
"Then pick me up."
"I can't."
She started crying harder.
Peter and Sylvie came running through the doors, stretcher and medical bag in their hands.
"Good god what happened?" He asked.
"A bomb went off." Adam looked away.
Sylvie leaned down next to Hannah and gently lifted her arm up.
"Arm looks broken."
Peter moved the sweatshirt from her forehead, revealing the blood. His eyes went wide. He cleaned up the blood and bandaged her head up. Sylvie started an i.v. in her neck. When it was inserted, Hannah let out a scream.
"I know it hurts, but I promise that it will make you better. Okay?"
"Come with me daddy."
"Daddy has to stay here."
"Please daddy." She reached an arm out to him and he took her hand.
"He will be down at the hospital as soon as he can. Okay?"
"We have to get her to Chicago Med! NOW!" Peter backed into the door, opening it so they could load her into the ambulance.
"Go with your daughter." Hank said, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"I don't want to leave you guys shorthanded."
"We got it covered."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, now go."
Adam went outside, hopping in the back of the ambulance and they took off.
Kim headed into the classroom. The electrical system had been zapped from the explosion, so there were no lights. She took the flashlight from her belt and flicked it on.
"Call out!" She yelled, waving the flashlight around the room. She breathed a sigh of relief when she noticed they were all there. The kids were scraped up, but they were all okay.
"Are you guys okay?" She asked.
"We're all fine in here." Ms. Webber said.
"Wait a minute...where are Brayden and MacKenzie?" Her heart started pounding even harder in her chest.
"T-they went up to the art room to grab something."
Erin came in the room to make sure everyone was okay, and to see if anyone needed medical attention. Kim ran out of the classroom and down the hall. She pushed through the doors and ran up the back stairwell.
"Brayden?! MacKenzie?!" She called out.
"Up here." A girl's voice said.
"Oh thank god!" She said, running to the top of the stairs.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine."
"Where's Brayden?"
MacKenzie pushed the door away that Brayden was hiding behind.
"Mommy!" He ran into her arms, and so did MacKenzie.
She held them as tight as she could.
"We were at the top of the stairs when it went off. As it went off, we dove for behind the door." MacKenzie told her.
"You guys were smart to do that. Is everyone okay up here?"
"Yeah everyone's fine up here."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure."
There were other officers up there, questioning the students and teachers. In seeing that, Kim headed back down the stairs with them. Matt was downstairs, inspecting the entrance from the inside.
"Daddy!" MacKenzie yelled out.
He turned around and put an arm around her when she reached him.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah daddy, I'm fine."
A scream could be heard from around the corner.
"That sounded like it came from the girls bathroom." Kevin said.
Jay ran in there, only to find Mikayla pinned to the floor by a cement slab.
"Mikayla!" He tried lifting the slab off her, but it was too much for just him.
Sean and Kevin came running in to help him. Her breathing was heavy and her body bruised.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine dad. My leg hurts though."
"Which leg?"
"The right one."
Jay lifted up her right pant leg to see what was wrong.
"Oh god..." He backed up.
"What?"
She looked at her leg and let out a loud shriek at the sight. The bone was poking out from her skin. The three of them made a makeshift splint, then they lifted her up and onto the stretcher when it arrived. Jessica started the i.v. in her arm.
"What happened?" She asked.
"She was pinned to the floor by cement."
The other medic was asking information about Mikayla.
"Mikayla Halstead. Ten years old. Broken and splintered leg bone, possible internal injuries."
A short time after that ambulance left, another unit arrived. Intelligence was cleared to go the hospital.
"Tell me they're going to be okay." Jay said to Will.
"They're little fighters."
"Will they make it?"
"Yeah they should. But-"
"But what?" Jay demanded.
"Hannah has damaged spinal discs. She'll need to have them repaired."
"And Mikayla?"
"She's in surgery now. She'll make it."
Adam was pacing back and forth in the waiting room. "Who would do something like this? And to little kids!"
"I wish I had the answer to that. I do know one thing, we will find this animal." Hank said.
Kim had Hannah's kindergarten fall picture in her hand. The more she thought about her, tears fell.
