Recovery

05:49, 25 December 2024

(A film projector is set up by Felix as Woods enters. Felix tilts his head for Woods to turn around. Woods sees Marshall, Bell, and Sev enter)

Woods: Hey. Something you should see

Sev: No popcorn?

Woods: I'm serious

Marshall: All right, you got my attention

Bell: What's up?

(Felix enters the floppy disk recovered from Iraq into the computer and begins playing archival footage just as Marshall sits down)

Marshall: You cracked the disk?

Felix: Indeed. Watch

(The footage reveals the date to be December 29, 1990 as Matvey Gusev is seen in a science facility)

Gusev: No. No, no, no. You must make sure-yes, you have it

(The footage zooms in on a human test subject sitting in a holding cell)

Scientist: Ready, Dr. Gusev?

(Gusev looks at his watch and nods)

Gusev: Bring her in

(The door to the cell opens and an erratic female prisoner is thrown into the cell next to the male prisoner by a masked guard)

Gusev: Test Subject 18 has been infected with the Cradle. She's now in proximity to our control subject... Transmission should occur momentarily

(Gusev motions with his finger to begin the test. The male prisoner frantically bangs his hands on the cell window)

Control Subject: No, no, please, please! Help! No! No, please-

Marshall: It's a biological weapon. We know this already

Bell: We know. But question is, what does it do?

Felix: Keep watching

(Bell, Marshall, Sev, and Woods continue to watch the footage as the two prisoners begin to writhe in agony. An offscreen female voice is heard)

Harrow: Is it faster this time?

Gusev: Faster, yes. And more aggressive-as requested

(The camera footage reveals Jane Harrow as the source of the new voice. Marshall looks on in disbelief)

Harrow: Wonderful

(The two prisoners start physically attacking each other in a primal rage)

Sev: Isn't that your friend, Harrow?

(Woods looks at Sev with a scowl on his face. Felix watches in horror at the experiment being carried out)

Harrow: You did it

Gusev: Apparently so

(Marshall stands up and flips over his chair)

Marshall: Turn it off

Felix: There's still a few more-

Marshall: I SAID TURN IT OFF!

(Marshall flings the film projector to the ground in rage and storms out of the room, leaving the others alone)

(Soon...)

(Bell opens the main door to the safe house and spots Sev hauling a heavy piece of rolled up fabric on his shoulder from the van)

Sev: Bell! Need you!

(Bell holds the door open for Sev until she drops the fabric to the ground)

Sev: Grab the other end, will you, puppy?

Bell: Puppy? That's a new one...

(Bell and Sev grab both ends of the fabric and lift it up, carrying it together through the house)

Sev: Good to see you up. I imagine learning that your friend is a huge bitch is taking a toll

Bell: Harrow's no friend of mine

Sev: At least, we missed the house collapse last night. Right into the water. I don't know about you, but I might start sleeping outside

(Bell and Sev reach the table outside the mission briefing room)

Sev: Let's drop them right here. I don't want to bother Marshall

Bell: Oh yeah, he's not doing great...

Felix: Somebody! So sloppy...

(Sev motions for Bell to follow her and join Felix inside the mission briefing room)

Sev: What? This again?

Felix: It's near the end of the video. Listen

(Felix plays back the video footage as audio plays out)

Gusev: [GARBLED]-B24, a wire from Fucina

Sev: Okay...

Felix: Listen. I was able to isolate Gusev's audio: this moment in the background. Now...

(Felix plays back the audio clip again with a cleaner background this time)

Gusev: [GARBLED]-B24, a wire from Fucina

Felix: "B24, a wire from Fucina."

(Woods joins in the conversation. Marshall stands off at a distance)

Woods: Who the hell's Fucina?

Bell: No clue

Felix: I have no idea

Sev: Not who. What. Fucina is the Casino Luttazzi. Only the Luttazzis and their business partners use that alias. Adler suspected an Avalon faction was connected with the Pantheon. Now we know

(Marshall walks in closer to the gathering)

Marshall: Not bad. What about B24?

Felix: I have done some work for the Luttazzis-regrettable, yet profitable. I have a contact that might be willing to shed light on that

Marshall: Woods, help Felix connect the dots here. Sev, you too. We need a plan

(Marshall walks away to work more on repairs to the house. Sev follows after him)

Sev: Marshall

(Sev joins Marshall in his repairs where a huge swath of fabric covers the area where the house collapsed)

Sev: Can I talk to you?

(Marshall doesn't respond)

Sev: You're unusually quiet

(Marshall hands Sev a hammer)

Marshall: Give me a hand with this

Sev: Harrow meant that much to you?

Marshall: We working or we talking?

Sev: Not trying to push. But, it's clear you're taking this pretty hard

Marshall: Wouldn't you?

Sev: Yes. I suppose I would. And did

Marshall: Don't

Sev: What?

Marshall: Don't act you know how I'm feeling

Sev: Your pain is your own, Marshall. But, I'm no stranger to betrayal

(Marshall stops working and stands up angrily)

Marshall: Yeah? How 'bout when the person you trusted the most turns out to be a supervillain? How 'bout that?

Sev: Tragedy is not a competition

Marshall: I don't want a pep talk right now

Sev: I am trying to tell you what you need to hear. Not what you want to hear

Marshall: And you think that this is what I need right now?

(Sev lays down the work hammer)

Sev: I was once like you. Did what I was told. Trusted what the people in my life told me. Know what that got me?

Marshall: A life of crime

Sev: Loss. The only person real in my life. The only person who saw me, the real me. Gone forever... And I pulled the trigger

Marshall: Sev, I-

Sev: The rules have changed! The game hasn't Either accept defeat or take a stand

(Sev walks away and leans against the doorway)

Bell: Do you think Livingstone's in on this?

Woods: Is Livingstone a world-class asshole? Abso-fucking-lutely. But Harrow? She's unhinged. Not sure if I buy them being in the same league

Bell: Hmm... What if Harrow was the mole and not Adler?

Woods: Do I think it was Harrow? Don't know. Probably. Pantheon's got a war chest. Could be she traded me, Mason, and Hudson for a mountain of cash. Raul Menendez is swimming in drug money. Wouldn't surprise me at all

Bell: While we're on the subject of Adler, did you hear from him yet?

Woods: Yeah, he called. Said he won't be home in time for dinner. He's still searching for Gusev in Iraq. Every lead's a dead end so far. But "quit" ain't in Adler's vocabulary, so - we'll see

Bell: And Marshall? Do you think his head's on straight?

Woods: Marshall? Kid's grown up a lot last couple of weeks. This might feel like a nasty setback- But...he'll pick himself back up. He's resilient. I got faith in that son-of-a-bitch. Shit's gettin' heavy

(Bell turns around and sees Sev walking over to him)

Sev: Been a day, huh, Bell?

Bell: Yeah. You alright?

Sev: The person you trust the most is the one most capable of hurting you. I do feel for Marshall

Bell: So who was it?

Sev: Who?

Bell: The person you trusted most

Sev: Years ago, I was involved with someone. His name was Pascal. Another member of The Guild. I had never met anyone like him. Someone who didn't take me at face value. He was convinced I wasn't a killer. That I cared too much. And I believed him. I told Guild leadership that I no longer wanted that life

Bell: So what happened? What went wrong?

Sev: They confided in me. They knew that Pascal was an operative from a rival family. He had infiltrated the Guild to sow discord, take our secrets. They had the evidence... So they had me orchestrate his assassination. The most difficult thing I've ever done... But it... it probably won't shock you, Bell, to learn what happened next. The whole thing was a lie. He was innocent. I fled the Guild and vowed to myself that I would bring the whole house down. Pascal was right about one thing... I do care too much. But, he also got something wrong. I am a killer. Irreversibly

Bell: You may have been damaged, but you're not broken

(Sev nods. She hugs Bell, who hugs her back)

Sev: Thanks for listening, Bell
