Interrogation

05:49, 25 December 2024

(Adler helps the wounded Bell reach the CIA safehouse)

Adler: Come on. A little further

(Adler drops Bell to the ground and proceeds to drag him into the safehouse)

Adler: Sims. Get the gurney

(Sims and Adler place Bell onto a gurney)

Park: Bell. I feel like I owe you. Thank you for... saving my life. Maybe you're one of us after all. I don't forget the people I owe. Bloody hell... We're going to lose a lot more than Lazar if we don't execute this next move correctly. We need you to hang in there for one more assignment. I'm counting on you again, Bell

Sims: Looks like you were one of the lucky ones out there. Well, we're not gonna lose Lazar for nothing. We're going for broke here, Bell. Putting all our chips on the table. You need to stay on point for this. Sharp. Focused

Adler: Sims. Get the dosages ready. All of them

Hudson: Adler, stop wasting our valuable time! He's of no use to us anymore!

(Adler ignores Hudson and wheels Bell to another room)

Adler: Stay alert, Bell. You're the key to stopping Perseus

Park: You always have been

Adler: No more half-assing it this time. We're doing an intracerebral injection

Park: Injecting directly into the brain could provoke seizures, or worse

Sims: Damn. Through the eye socket. You sure about this, Doc?

(Adler sticks the needle directly into Bell's left eye, dosing him)

Bell: AAAAAH!

Park: The memories should begin almost immediately

Sims: I guess we're doing this.

Adler: Bell, listen to me. I need you to remember. Think back to our time in Vietnam. One more time. We need to finish what we started. We had a job to do

(Bell's vision begins to fade)

Adler: Think Bell, Perseus. Do you remember coming face to face with Perseus in Vietnam?

Sims: EKG is spiking. Shit. Heart Rate's off the charts

Adler: I need you to relax and focus, Bell. Your helicopter crashed. You made your way through the jungle, alone. You found a bunker. Do you remember the bunker, Bell? We need to know what's inside that bunker

(Inside Bell's mind, the drugs are making him imagine simulated scenarios. However, he's panicking. Unbalanced. Sporadic)

(Perseus' voice can be heard echoing in Bell's mind along with Adler's voice)

Perseus: Do not trust Adler. Adler is lying to you. Do not listen to Adler. He is lying to you. Find the truth. Do not trust Adler

Adler: During a mission to investigate reports of a Soviet bunker, your chopper was hit by ground fire

Pilot: We've been hit! Stick's dead ... we're going down!

(Bell finds himself with his regular left arm back instead of a metal one. He finds himself inside of a downed UH-1 helicopter before looking out to see a group of Viet Cong soldiers charging towards him. Bell pushes off a fallen comrade from his body to look down on the ground)

Adler: According to your debrief, you woke up in the middle of a firefight. The crash survivors were defending against a VC attack

(Bell drops from the downed UH-1 to the ground)

Adler: You ran forward and picked up an M16

(Bell walks forward and picks up an XM4 commando rifle)

Adler: ...or maybe it was another weapon

(Bell and the survivors of the crash site fight bravely against the VC soldiers, but are overwhelmed and shot dead)

Adler: Really, Bell? You're telling us you died on this mission?

(Adler facepalms as the simulation resets. Adler fast-forwards back to the firefight. Bell massacres the VC soldiers)

Adler: That's more like it... The remaining VC fled into the tree line. It was then you realized you were the sole survivor. You set off to locate the bunker

(Bell reaches a split in the road near a temple)

Adler: The path split near a ruin, so you took the right fork, not the trail to the left. The zipline was the fastest way to the cave. You wanted to reach that bunker as soon as possible

(Bell however goes left instead of right)

Bell: Wait. What? No. Bell. Bell! Focus!

(Bell keeps going down the path, fighting his way past the VC soldiers with the help of random American soldiers)

Adler: What the hell? Why is Bell on scenario 11?

(Bell reaches the site of a big firefight between American soldiers and VC soldiers)

Adler: A few allies were pinned down on a ridge. You readied your sniper rifle to assist

(Bell uses a sniper rifle to start picking off VC soldiers, using the high ground advantage. Eventually, a helicopter comes by and wipes them out with a napalm strike)

(Through the burning building, Bell reaches a little cave with a red door)

(Adler shrugs)

Adler: ... I guess that works... You heard Russian voices from a cave, so you went to investigate

(Bell turns around and starts walking away)

Adler: Bell, I need you to turn around and go into the cave

(Bell keeps walking further away)

Adler: Bell's starting to drift

(Soon enough, Bell is back on track. He moves down the river until they reach a cave. They enter the cave and hops down the rock ledges, moving through the tunnels)

Adler: There we go... You equipped your shotgun and had a bow ready

(Bell pulls out an MP5)

Adler: Or maybe not... That's when you discovered VC soldiers meeting with Soviet agents

(Bell stealthily enters an area crowded with Viet Cong soldiers and Soviet agents, and quickly shoots and kills them all before proceeding through the tunnels. Eventually, Bell reaches a large flat stone wall with a red door)

Adler: Yes, Bell! That red door was the door into the Soviet bunker

(Bell opens the door and enters the Soviet bunker)

Adler: Yes, good, the bunker. Now tell me about Perseus

(Bell walks through the hallway and into a planning chamber with Perseus at the end of the room. Then, the screen whites out)

Adler: We almost had it. Let's run 6

Park: Okay, ready

Adler: Bell, we've got a job to do

(Adler rewinds the simulation back to the zipline)

Adler: Bell, turn back and use the zipline to reach the bunker

(Bell jumps off the cliff. Adler has a "WTF" expression on his unamused face)

Adler: Sure, Bell. You committed suicide. Then what?

(Adler rewinds the simulation to the cave)

(Although when Bell enters the red door, he enters into a white room with only a TV and a chair. Bell interacts with the chair and the scenario whites out)

Adler: Christ, what's happening to him?

(Bell hears different voices echoing in his head)

Park: The CIA's mind control program has had a great deal of success with impanted memories...

Adler: We've got a job to do

(An image of the red door opening up is revealed, replaced by an image of a bell ringing, until the screen flashes into white)

Adler: Let's up the dosage and run 1B this time

Park: Ok, Ready

(Flashback to the downed helicopter earlier. This time, it is night and Bell is all alone)

Adler: According to your debrief, you woke up and the rest of your crew was missing. The VC were on the ground searching for survivors. You readied your bow to take them out silently

(Bell jumps down from the helicopter and equips the bow. Viet Cong soldiers are searching the nearby village for American soldiers, so Bell kills them quietly with the bow one by one)

(Bell uses the bow and arrows to kill the Viet Cong soldiers in the village. Bell then leaves the area and makes his way to the ruin where the road splits up. The road is dotted with computer monitors and machinery that stands out from the jungle environment)

Adler: The path split near a ruin, so you took the well-travelled trail on your left, NOT toward the waterfall on your right

(Bell goes right and goes down the zipline again)

Adler: Are you fucking kidding me?... You mentioned crossing a river. The bunker was somewhere on the other side

(Bell crosses the river and passes by a couple of houses and sees another split in the road with a Buddha statue in the middle)

Adler: At the fork, you followed the road right toward the sound of gunfire

(Bell goes right and reaches a firefight taking place between American soldiers and Viet Cong troops)

Adler: Seeing a firefight, you readied your M16. Or whatever other weapon you had

(Bell helps the American soldiers take out the VC troops before moving on. Bell moves forward through the devastated village and passes through a destroyed house to find the Soviet bunker on the other side)

Adler: Yes, this was the bunker entrance you described in the report

(Bell opens the bunker door. Their vision shines in an unusual way. He sees Lazar standing at the end of the hallway before he speedwalks away)

Park: This could be the onset of another focal seizure

(Bell finds himself in a pitch black room with two slide projectors. He goes over to one and uses it to reveal images of Russia and its warplanes in the sky until the next slide reveals half a red door. Bell goes to the second projector and uses it to reveal images of American soldiers, Russia, and the White House in Washington DC and another half of the red door. Aligned together, the two slides reveal an entire red door. The red door slides materialize into an actual door, which Bell opens and walks through it into the bunker hallway from earlier)

(He moves through the hallway and into the planning room with Perseus in it from earlier. The screen blazes white once again and Adler's voice can be heard)

Adler: No, don't stop, Bell! Fuck. FUCK! Hand me the fallback scenario manual

Park: Here it is

Adler: Bell, we've got a job to do

(Bell reaches the bunker and opens the door and his vision shines in an unusual way before he enters a lab)

Adler: A lab? That doesn't sound right. Bell's in the lab?

(Bell runs past various glass panels showing various glimpses of TVs, medical equipment, and Adler)

Adler: This isn't working

Park: Administering 1cc of adrenaline

(The tiles on the walls around Bell fall down and collapse. Bell runs past them to find the planning room behind a glass viewing window)

Adler: That's it Bell! That's what you were looking for, Perseus was in there

(Bell runs past to another glass viewing window which reveals a glimpse of Park, Sims and Adler looking at him in the safehouse. Bell then at the end of the hallway, reaches a final viewing window that teleports Bell into the room. The room is filled with various medical equipment, a TV that plays Vietnam War footage, and a chair. His view whites out)

Adler: Normal forms of interrogation weren't working

Park: You'll have to establish trust. By building up a shared history with the subject

Adler: We've got a job to do

(An image of the red door opening up is revealed, replaced by an image of a bell ringing, until the screen flashes into white)

Adler: Another dose. We'll keep rerunning scenario 1. Bell, we've got a job to do

Park: I wouldn't recommend that

Adler: I didn't ask

(Flashback to the downed UH-1 helicopter. It is daylight again and a firefight is happening between American soldiers and Viet Cong insurgents in a nearby village. Bell jumps out of the helicopter and drops down to the ground)

Adler: According to your debrief, you woke up in the middle of a firefight. The crash survivors were defending against a VC attack. You readied a grenade launcher and charged ahead

(Bell uses the M79 grenade launcher to kill the Viet Cong. After killing all the enemy soldiers, suddenly, a huge horde of zombies shows up. Bell starts firing at the zombies with his grenade launcher)

(Suddenly, a tank pulls up and runs over a bunch of zombies. There is a certain crew of 4 on top of the tank firing at the zombies with their pack-a-punched guns while "Shepherd Of Fire" plays in the background)

Dempsey: Dropping zombies since 1945! Ooorah!

Nikolai: I need more vodka- I mean ammo!

Richtofen: Don't be afraid of death... Be afraid... Of ze doctor!

Takeo: For the emperor!

Bell: (???)

Adler: What the fuck is going on?

Park: It's quite... imaginative

Adler: Run it again

(Adler rewinds the simulation to the firefight)

Adler: According to your debrief, you woke up in the middle of a firefight. The crash survivors were defending against a VC attack. You readied an M16 and charged ahead

(Bell uses his M16 to open fire on the incoming VC soldiers)

(A VC soldier comes up and tries to stab Bell with a knife, but that VC soldier is suddenly shot in the side of the head by an unexpected ally)

Reznov: You are going to be alright, my friend!

(Reznov opens fire on the VC soldiers with an AK-47, helping Bell in the firefight)

(As Bell and Reznov fight the VC, Adler gets more and more confused)

Adler: What? What does Viktor Reznov have to do with any of this?! He was never in Vietnam!

Hudson: Bell isn't even the first person I've had to explain that to

Adler: Run it again!

(Adler rewinds the simulation again. Bell is engaged in a firefight against the VC with his M16)

(Suddenly, a whole bunch of Shadow Company mercenaries break through the treeline and open fire. Bell gets to cover and returns fire with his M16)

(As Bell fights the Shadow Company mercs, he finds himself with two unexpected allies nearby. One with a boonie hat and the other with a mohawk)

Price: Ghost! Come in, this is Price! We're under attack by Shepherd's men in the boneyard! Soap, hold the left flank!

Soap: I've got it!

Price: Do not trust Shepherd! I say again, do NOT trust Shepherd!

(Bell, Price, and Soap keep the fight going against Shadow Company)

Adler: Who the hell is-? You know what? Fuck it. Run it again

Park: But Adler-

Adler: Again!

(Adler rewinds the simulation again)

(Bell proceeds as normal with the firefight against the VC, wiping them all out)

(But then, Bell blinks, and all the VC troops all each turn into Adler. Bell keeps shooting, fighting the Adlers)

(Eventually, Bell fights his way past the Adlers and seems to start getting back on track)

Adler: THERE we go...

(Bell leaves the village and walks down the jungle path. This time, iron pipes dot the path ahead. Bell reaches the first split in the path with the ruin)

Adler: The path split near a ruin, so you took the well-traveled trail on your left, not toward the waterfall on your right

(And of course, Bell takes the waterfall path)

Adler: The bunker is left, Bell, not right. Turn around, Bell, and take the other path

(Bell continues down the path, fighting his way past more VC troops)

Adler: Stop fighting me, Bell. Go left

(Bell finds obstacles in his way, so he's forced to the left trail and dispatches Viet Cong snipers in the trees. They reach the bridge where several structures materialize out of thin air. A trio of helicopters fly over the bridge)

Adler: Reports had the bunker across the bridge

(Bell crosses the bridge and into the night village from earlier. Several images of American soldiers, bullets, and Viet Cong troops dot the area frozen in time. Bell reaches the second split path. This time, a stone sculpture of Adler's face appears next to the Buddha statue)

Adler: You went left at the fork, not right

(Bell takes the left trail and moves through the jungle until he hears the sound of explosions and gunfire. Bell reaches a ridge where American soldiers are being attacked by the Viet Cong. He repeats the sniper scenario)

(Bell goes to the red bunker door through the destroyed house)

Adler: Inside the house hit by napalm, you would find a hidden bunker door

(Bell moves through the area and walks up to the bunker door. He tries to open it, but finds it locked instead)

Adler: I don't care if the door was fucking stuck. Open it!

(Bell suddenly finds himself in another bunker hallway and turns around to look down the hallway. But when he looks back at the door, he sees the door has vanished, leaving only a solid wall)

(Bell proceeds through the hallway and comes upon the red door at the end of the hall. He opens it up and, this time, the door swings open to reveal another bunker hallway)

Adler: Park, give Bell another injection

Park: That's a terrible idea, Adler. It could be lethal. Bell's heart rate is already-

Adler: Do it! Now!

(Bell's POV blurs from the injection with an orange haze. The sound of a Russian choir singing can be heard)

Park: Heart rate is spiking. I'm not sure how much longer Bell can last

Sims: Those are some serious convulsions

(Bell's vision and hearing become distorted as he walks through the hallway and one red door after another. Eventually, his vision and hearing are restored to normal)

Park: Good. Everything's stabilizing. Heart rate is coming down

Sims: Well, it looks like Bell's calming down. Maybe, we're okay again?

(Bell opens and walks through another red door. In the hallway, doors close automatically when Bell walks past them)

Adler: Bell, go through A door!

(Bell moves through the hallway, while the hallway shrinks in size and doors close all around him)

(Bell explores the hallway, trying to find a door)

Adler: Stop wasting my time with this hallway. Turn around, Bell

(Eventually, the red door appears again and Bell walks through it to find a much cleaner hallway. There is a red door at the end of the hallway)

Adler: What? The lab? What the hell is Bell doing in the lab again?

(Just as Bell is about to reach the red door again, the ground collapses from underneath his feet and he falls a few stories down back into the dirtier hallways. Bell lands right in front of another red door)

(Bell opens the door and finds a certain merc with a mouth playing video games while chilling on the couch)

Deadpool: Oh COME ON! I have to download THREE SEPARATE PARTS of the full campaign?! That's bullshit!

(Deadpool flips a table over. Bell confusedly closes the door)

Adler: Bell, forget about the damn lab! I need to know about the bunker!

(Bell walks down a hallway and opens the door. He walks through it into another hallway. This time, the briefing room is at the end of the hallway. Perseus stands at the head of the table with various papers posted all over its walls and the floor)

Perseus: Comrades... The United States and its allies slowly consume that which is dear to us

(Perseus' movement and speech slow down until he freezes on the spot. Bell walks past him and reaches a computer on the table, which he accesses. Bell has the option to choose "Perseus", "Operation Greenlight" or "Nova 6". Each file that he chooses will cause the computer text to become more corrupted until it becomes unreadable. The monitor displays the repeated message, "DO NOT TRUST ADLER")

Adler: You can't be fucking serious

(Adler rewinds the simulation once more)

(Back at the split path at the ruins)

Adler: The path split near a ruin, so you took the right fork, not the trail to the left

(Bell goes left)

Adler: Bell, why are you going left?! God dammit!

(Bell eventually reaches the zipline and bridge, where American and Viet Cong soldiers are frozen in time)

Adler: Bell, take the zipline down to the river

(Bell crosses the bridge)

Adler: Bell, go back to the zipline. The bunker is in the caves. Go

(Bell can either enter the bunker via the cave or go into a hatch covered by a bamboo door. He chooses the hatch)

Adler: No, Bell. You found the bunker by going into the cave

(Bell climbs down the ladder in the hatch, only for the ladder to break and send Bell plummeting to the bottom of the hatch)

Adler: Why is... Sims, this is Scenario 17...

(Bell wakes up at the bottom of the tunnel and pulls out a 1911 with a flashlight)

Adler: A tunnel? You, uh, okay, you pulled out your sidearm and flashlight...

(The tunnel leads to a small cavern with a small Viet Cong command post. Another tunnel out of the command post leads to another tunnel which opens into a larger cavern)

(In this cavern, a bunch of zombies show up and start to swarm Bell. Bell uses his M1911 to start shooting the zombies, scoring 100 points with each headshot. He whacks a zombie with his flashlight, scoring 130 points)

(Bell runs over to a conveniently placed soda machine and drinks from a red bottle of juggernog before tossing it, becoming more durable. He opens a box with question mark symbols on it and grabs a ray gun from it)

(Bell starts blasting the zombies with his ray gun until it runs out of ammo. The zombies eventually swarm Bell and knock him down. He desperately hopes someone will help him up since he has the ray gun)

Adler: Stop lying, Bell. There were no zombies in Vietnam. Start again and tell me how you met Perseus

(Bell is teleported to a room with a red door in front of him. Bell opens the door to find another bunker hallway. The events inside the bunker hallway play out the same way as before, except instead of Bell entering the briefing room, he enters a laboratory room filled with TVs and cameras., as well as a chair)

Adler: We're losing Bell. We are still completely off-script here

Park: Bell's been through a lot of trauma, real and imagined

Adler: We have no leads left. We'll push until we get what we need or Bell dies... We have a job to do

(Adler rewinds the simulation back to the beginning)

Adler: We've been over this already. Skip ahead to the next part

(Bell is fast-forwarded past the firefight and finds himself in front of the ruins)

Adler: The bunker was right there at the ruins, Bell! You went in!

(Bell runs away from the red bunker door. But as he's running, a red door drops in front of him. He maneuvers around it and keeps running)

(As Bell keeps running, more and more red doors drop down, which he has to avoid)

Adler: Bell, open the door! Tell me about Perseus! What happened in that bunker?!

(Soon enough, Bell finds himself teleported in an enclosed stone room, with the red bunker door as his only exit)

Adler: BELL. THE DOOR. GO INSIDE

(Bell opens the red door and walks through)

Adler: Bell. Perseus said something to you. What was it?

(Bell finds the same room from before with the table and chairs. He sits down at the table and sees a vision)

Adler: You're the only one who knows where Perseus is. Where he'll detonate the nukes. Where is he, Bell?!

(In the vision, Bell is sitting at the table with Perseus, Stitch, Volkov, Arash, and Aldrich)

Perseus: Comrades... The United States and its allies slowly consume that which is dear to us. Our leaders continue to weaken under this threat. It is the moral duty of Perseus to act when they will not. Soon, we will possess an American nuclear bomb. The key to unlocking their entire greenlight arsenal. Once we control the greenlight arsenal, we will detonate them all from the safety of Solovetsky

(Bell is shown lying near a demolished car after Arash Kadivar tried to blow him up)

Adler: Over here, we've got a live one!

(The cutscene starts back to after Bell was rescued)

Adler: I've got to admit I'm surprised. I didn't think he'd recover so fast. We tried everything. Normal forms of interrogation weren't working

Park: Breaking a subject's will and erasing their mind is a difficult and painful process

Adler: That's a small price to pay

Park: The CIA's mind control program has had a great deal of success with implanted memories

Adler: You want me to tell him about my time in Vietnam?

Park: Lastly, you'll need a command phrase to trigger the implanted memories

Adler: We have a job to do. You had to reach the Soviet bunker

Park: It appears the subject's programming is beginning to take hold

Adler: We've got a job to do. We've known each other for years. Fought together, bled together. Been through the hell of Vietnam together. We've got a job to do

Park: And now the training's complete. We just need to give the subject a name

Adler: Bell

(Bell opens his eyes to find Sims, Park, and Adler standing by him)

Sims: He's coming to

Adler: Bell, no more fucking around! What did Perseus say? Where is he?

Bell: What's happening to me?

Adler: You're disoriented, Bell, we'll explain everything later. Right now, we need to help each other. What you're going through now is nothing compared to what you'll experience if you don't start cooperating

Bell: What the hell did you do to me?!

Adler: We gave you a second chance when you were shit out of luck. Now we just want some assistance in return

Park: Bell, you were one of Perseus' top agents. His associate, Arash Kadivar, turned on you at the airstrip in Turkey. Left you for dead. Adler found you, barely alive

Arash: When the plane leaves Trabzon, it stops in Duga. This you know. Here's what you don't know. Perseus won't be there. None of these hired guns are going to leave Duga alive. We'll dump their bodies in the forest. Then we will move the weapons to Volkov in Berlin. From there, we fly to Solovetsky

Adler: We were there. We found you after everything went down. The CIA reinvented you, Bell. We needed to give you a new identity to replace the old one. It was Park's idea to let you stay as ex-KGB. Hudson thought we were making a mistake by conditioning you to be an ex-KGB agent. But what else is new? We were able to utilize your language and cryptography skills as an added bonus. The bigger challenge was your memory

Park: The CIA's MK-Ultra program used Adler's missions in Vietnam as a template. We needed you to have that shared experience, that lifelong bond, to establish trust

Sims: You were a guinea pig for the CIA's MK-Ultra program. They used me and Adler's missions in Vietnam to create new memories. Nothing brings people together like wartime. Instant family. Brothers in arms. It's fucked up, I know, but we needed you to believe you were one of us

Bell: So... I was never really in Vietnam?

Adler: No. Count yourself lucky. You've only had those memories for a few months. Me? I've been living with them for over a decade

Bell: What do you get out of changing my identity?

Adler: Interrogation didn't work with you. But thanks to MK-Ultra's research, we had a backup plan. If you believed you were someone else, we could lead you to a place where you'd give up everything

Bell: Yeah? And what did I give you?

Adler: Enough to get us where we are today. But, we're not finished yet

Bell: Fuck this

Adler: I don't think so. You're still holding back on us, and we're going to get it out of you

Bell: Good luck

(Adler angrily grabs Bell)

(Bell grips Adler's throat with his metal hand)

Adler: (Strained) We have a job to do

(The screen fades to white. Flashback to past events where Adler says the same line over)

Adler: Bell, come on, we've got a job to do

Adler: Park. Get that arm

(Park lifts a panel on Bell's metal arm while he's dazed and "disarms" him)

(Flash forward to the present)

Adler: The trigger phrase kept you in line, but it didn't get us everything we needed. Your innermost secrets were always locked behind a door

Bell: You're lying! You put this shit in my head!

Adler: Bell, I realize you probably hate us right now. What we've done to you. I just need you to fully understand the stakes here. What you do right now is not about me, it's not about you. It's about billions of other fucking people. It's about stopping someone who in the end has no true allegiance to anyone other than himself. So tell me. Where is Perseus?

(Flashback to Bell's meeting with Perseus)

Perseus: Once we control the Greenlight arsenal, we will detonate them all from the safety of Solovetsky

Adler: This is your chance to define who you really are, Bell. Where is Perseus?
