Chapter 28
08:08, 3 January 2023Night soon took over the entire sky, the careers lit a fire. Blake is still tied to the tree, her wrists started to hurt from the rope gripping her tightly.
"Finnick, give me a sign you are here..." she mumbles. Eloi could overhear her callout quietly to the sky.
"Do you ever stop talking?" Eloi grits his teeth.
"You know, why don't you go stick your nose in someone else's business?" Blake retorts. Eloi bolts up to his feet furiously, he grips Blake's face.
"Shut up! Or i'll make you-" Eloi growls.
"Eloi! Knock it off, or I'll make you take her place." Lalo interrupts him.
Eloi aggressively removes his hands away from her face. He sits down and pouts like a baby next to Ottilie. They finish eating their meal and begin to talk again.
"Eloi, you take the first watch," Lalo points to Blake and lays down on his sleeping bag, Ottilie follows suit a few seconds later. Eloi turns to Blake, and flashes a smirk.
"It's just you and me princess," Eloi smirks. He checks to see if Lalo and the blonde have fallen asleep; to Blake's disadvantage, they have.
"So, tell me everything" Eloi stares at Blake, waiting for her to speak. He grabs a sharp blade, he starts to sharpen it with another. Her heart drops, he's going to kill her.
"Why-why should I? You haven't been kind to me ever since the games started" Blake slowly and quietly tries to remove the rope from her wrists. Eloi doesn't acknowledge her claim.
"You know, I tried to be your friend. I thought you were hot, but look where you got yourself. If you tried to be friends with us, you wouldn't be tied to that tree as you are now."
Blake presses her lips, she would never willingly be their friends, allies are even pushing it. "Maybe you are right, but at least I actually made friends. They got me to where I am now, and I don't regret it one bit." She felt the rope free itself around her; grabs it and holds it in place till it is time to attack.
"You've got quite a mouth on you, Ms. Grey" Eloi slowly stands up. He towers over her, Blake could feel his eyes daggering her. He grabs her chin, forcing her to look at him.
"Why don't I shut you up" He holds the blade to her neck, she could feel blood slowly trickling down her. Eloi's sinister smile terrifies Blake, this is her chance. She knees Eloi in the groin, he falls to the ground; Blake grabs the blade from his hand. She holds it to his neck.
"Oh how the tables have turned; well done, Blake" Eloi chuckles in pain.
"Shut up" she whispers angrily into his ear. Blake slits his throat, he begins to choke on his own blood. His hands grip his neck. Blake quickly snatches her supplies and weapons. She runs away from the campsite, as fast as her legs could take her. Blake finds a large enough tree to hide behind, she tries to catch her breath. Breathing slower to help with the fear. Suddenly, a cannon goes off; Eloi is dead. She sighs with relief. It becomes quiet, she can hear the wind slowly breezing through the trees. A song begins to play, a familiar tune. It's a parachute from a sponsor, it lands in the tree she is leaning up against. Blake reaches for it, grabbing the bottle hanging from the parachute. She opens it, water. Blake gulps down half the bottle, then realizes that she needs to save the rest. A note is written on the bottom of the bottle.
Good work, you are almost done
-Finnick
Blake tears up, her head rests on the tree, "I can't do this. I'm so done"
She holds her head in her hands, tears and blood cover her entire upper half. She finds some cloth to hold against her neck until she stops bleeding. Blake's eyes become heavy. Her brain and dreams take her away. She is so sleep deprived that she couldn't hear any of the rodents or insects that pass her. Blake's foot touches a branch, making her jolt up from her nap. It's morning, but it's unusually loud. She could hear two people talking and crying in the distance. Blake grabs her pack and supplies to follow the voices. She comes to a clearing, with two girls, a blonde girl and a raven haired girl. Blake hides behind thick bushes, eavesdropping on their conversation.
"Maine, I don't think I can do this anymore" the raven haired girl cries out into the blondes lap.
The blonde must be from district 7, Maine. Blake notices that Maine is crying as well.
"Files, don't say that. We've made it this far, don't give up now, okay?" Maine lifts Files's face up to hers. Files is from district 6. They must have gotten very close these past days, Blake notices. They were both very attractive women, but innocent. They were just girls like Blake, trying to live a normal life. The Hunger Games shouldn't have to be part of their life.
Files shakes her head at Maine, "I'm done, I can't live like this. I can't live without you."
Maine's eyes widen, "What are you saying?"
"I don't know," Files holds Maine's face to hers, pulling her in for a desperate kiss. Maine pulls away quickly.
"Files- I can't; I mean- we can't" Maine wipes the tears from her face. Files nods, she starts to pack up.
Maine stops her hand from packing anymore."That's not what I mean. I feel the same, but all but one are going to die. I don't want to lose you and then live without you the rest of my life."
"Then, let's not" Files pulls out two knives. She hands one to Maine, tears drench both of their faces. Maine grips the knife.
"I love you," Maine cries out with sorrow flooding her brain.
"I love you, too. See you soon" Files presses the blade against her chest, Maine does the same. They both insert the knives at the same time, two cannons go off. Blake's eyes flood with tears, the games have ruined everyone. Not just the tributes, everyone. Blake swiftly rushes over and grabs all of their supplies from their camp. She is about to leave, but feels guilty for taking their supplies. She reaches for Files and Maine's hands and connects them together. They both lay side by side, holding each other in peace.
I really wanted to make a Romeo and Juliet scenario in this book, I love Files and Maine together. Even though they aren't in this book that much, I still love them.
