⋆ Chapter 19 ⋆Dead To Me

                        "And this year's winner of the chili cook off is... Cal Jacobs! Make it six years and running!" The announcer said as everyone began clapping.

Adaline stood in between Nate and Aaron as the family got their picture taken. At first she wasn't going to be in it but both Marsha and Cal called her over. Nate snuck his arm around Adaline's waist pulling her closer to him. The two had bright smiles on their faces as they looked at the photographer.

Unfortunately, Nate's actions didn't go unnoticed by a certain dark haired girl. Seeing Nate with his arm around Adaline wasn't out of the ordinary. They were always flirty with each other and she was used to that. What angered the girl was seeing how much Nate's family accepted Adaline. They literally begged her to be in their family photo.

As the clapping died down one person could still be heard loud and clear. When Adaline saw who the person clapping was she sighed knowing shit was about to go down.

"Yeah, I'm not supposed to be here right now, because I'm dressed like a hooker, and none of you like me, but I just wanted to say congratulations."

"Maddy, get out of..." Nate began stepping forward only to be cut off by Maddy knocking the chili pot over. The chili splashed all over Adaline and Marsha. Oohs could be heard from the crowd as they watched with wide eyes and open mouths.

"What the hell Maddy?" Adaline exclaimed looking down at her now stained jeans.

"What in God's name is your problem?" Marsha yelled.

"You, cunt." Maddy sneered. "And fuck you too! You're just a dumb orphan whore who thinks she's so perfect. News flash Nate only fucked you because we weren't together! That same night he was all up in my messages talking about how much he loved me!" She screamed flipping off Adaline.

Before Adaline could even respond Nate grabbed Maddy's arm roughly dragging her away from his family and the crowd of bystanders. Everyone was too stunned to speak.

"Are you alright sweetheart?" Marsha asked handing Adaline some napkins.

Adaline shook her head trying not to let her tears fall. She was shocked by Maddy's words. What happened to wanting to be friends again? Adaline hadn't even done anything to Maddy for her to be pissed at her.

"There's something seriously wrong with that girl. Don't mind her Addie she's just jealous." Marsha said reassuringly.

"She's a fucking psycho!" Aaron laughed.

"I um need a minute." Adaline mumbled not waiting for a reply before walking away. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she followed the same path Nate went dragging Maddy. Adaline knew Nate was angry. She wanted to get to him before he did something stupid. Unfortunately the Kingston girl was a little too late.

"I'm not gonna let you fucking embarrass me like that again I swear to fucking God. Shut the fuck up! I'm fucking done with you! I'm so fucking done with you." Nate seethed as he pinned Maddy up against the trailer by her neck. He was fuming. He couldn't believe she had just done that. Nate was mad at Maddy for what she said to his mom but he was fuming at her for disrespecting Adaline.

"So what else is new?" Maddy scoffed.

"I'm not fucking joking." Nate said tightening his grip.

"Yeah, fucking right."

"Calling my mom a cunt. Calling Adaline a whore. You know how fucking much that probably hurt her calling her an orphan? What the fuck is actually wrong with your fucking brain?" Nate asked. "If anyone is the fucking whore it's you!"

"I think you're overreacting."

"You're fucking dead to me. Fuck you." He spat his hand still tightly gripping Maddy's neck.

"Nate?" Adaline called out as she made her way closer to where the Jacobs boy was standing.

Upon hearing her soft voice Nate let his grip on Maddy go. He turned spotting Adaline with red eyes and wet cheeks walking closer to the two.

"Hey you okay?" She asked not paying any attention to Maddy standing behind Nate.

"Yeah. Yeah I'm good. Let's go." Nate spoke gently grabbing Adaline's hand intertwining their fingers and leading her away. He looked over his shoulder casting one final glance at Maddy. "Let's go ride the Ferris wheel before the carnival is over."

Adaline nodded letting a small smile fall across her face. She could tell Nate was still upset over what happened by how tight his jaw was clenched. She was still mad at him but she knew right now she needed to put her pride aside and help calm him down. When Nate got mad he was reckless.

The two teenagers rode the Ferris wheel together. Nate had his arm draped across Adaline's shoulders as she snuggled into his side. "Are you okay?" He finally asked breaking the silence.

"I don't know Nate. So much has happened in the past two days." Adaline sighed glancing at how small everything looked from the top of the Ferris wheel. "I don't understand why Maddy said that stuff about me. The last time we talked she kept saying how she was sorry and how she missed being friends. If she wanted to be my friend again why would she say something like that to me?"

"It's Maddy. She's a bitch. She doesn't think before she does shit." Nate replied tucking a stray piece of hair behind Adaline's ear. "She shouldn't have said what she did. You're not a whore"

"Why did you have sex with me?" She asked remembering Maddy's words. Adaline tried to telling herself that Nate didn't just use her. She didn't want to think about that possibility of it not meaning anything to him. The brunette hoped that he actually wanted to be with her and wasn't just using her as a replacement for Maddy.

"I've always had a thing for you Ads. I've wanted you for so long I just never acted on it." He explained.

"I've kind of always had a crush on you too. I mean I've always loved you it just started to become in a more romantic way as we got older." Adaline said looking down at her hands. "I think it became really clear after my parents died. I felt so alone and you were the only one constantly there for me. It showed me how much you cared."

"Hey look at me." Nate turned Adaline's face towards him making her look him in the eye. "You have me and my family. I know we're pretty fucked up but we all love you. You're not alone."

"Thanks Nate." She smiled through watery eyes. Nate was really doing a great job at winning her back.

"I love you Ads."

"I love you too. I'll always love you even if I currently hate you." She chuckled. Nate laughed too leaning down to kiss the top of her head.

This is what Nate needed. Adaline was the one thing that could make him feel better. She didn't even have to do anything to calm him down or make him happy. She just had to exist.

After riding the Ferris wheel Adaline told Nate she as going to go find Lexi and Cassie. She was also hoping to find Fezco but she didn't tell Nate that. He didn't mind saying that he had to go meet up with one of his football friends. Adaline didn't believe him but she wasn't going to question him. The last thing she needed was to piss him off more. She had just managed to calm him down.

Addie 🌞🌸 - Are you still at the carnival?Addie 🌞🌸 - Wanna meet up? Addie 🌞🌸 - Lex?Addie 🌞🌸 -Did you leave early?

Adaline sighed turning her phone off. She was annoyed that Lexi wasn't answering. She told her that she wouldn't be able to hang out until later so it's not like she didn't know to wait. Adaline hoped nothing happened to make her leave early.

As she was walking she noticed a familiar looking figure standing by a pretzel stand. Adaline's smiled beamed as she walked towards the stand.

"Shit girl what the hell happened to your pants? It looks like you just walked through a mountain of shit." Fezco laughed taking a hit from his blunt.

"Ha ha very funny." She rolled her eyes looking down at her stained jeans. "This is compliments of the one and only Maddy Perez."

"Oh shit! What happened?" Fez exclaimed.

"Honestly I have no fucking clue. I think she was pissed at Nate but who knows. She just came over to the chili booth yelling calling Nate's mom the c-word and then she just dumped the chili pot over."

"Damn. Wish I could have seen that." He laughed taking another hit. He offered the blunt to Adaline who was dying for a hit but she knew she couldn't. "So what are you doing?"

"Well I was supposed to meet up with Lexi but she's not answering her phone and I haven't seen any of my other friends so I'm probably just going to walk home." She shrugged.

"Nah I'll give you a lift. Me and Ash was just about to pack up. Give us like 10 minutes."

"You sure?" Adaline asked.

"Yeah Addie. I ain't gonna let you walk home alone. Lot of sick people out there. Don't want nothing bad happening to you."

"Thanks Fez." She blushed. Why is Fez like the sweetest person ever?

While the Kingston girl was on her way home with Fezco and Ashtray. Nate had just arrived at his and Adaline's favorite spot. He had a million different thoughts running through his mind.

Nate knew he fucked up by putting his hands on Maddy but he was too angry to care in that moment. He had to do damage control. Which is exactly why he texted her as he waited for Jules to arrive at the lake.

Nate - I'm sorry I got so angry at you before.Nate - I got a lot of shit going on right now and I'm really confused. I don't know what to do.Nate - Maddy, I love you.
