Thursday arrived in the blink of an eye. Adaline decided to stay home from school because she wasn't feeling very well. She was hoping that she'd feel better for the carnival tomorrow night.
Adaline was currently laying in bed thinking about life. Nothing much had happened between her and Nate since their little hookup in the empty classroom. She was giving him time to figure out his relationship with Maddy.
Adaline didn't want anything else to happen between the two until he was single. She felt extremely guilty for sleeping with Nate. Maddy had texted her a couple times over the last few days. She kept apologizing and saying how she wants Adaline back in her life. Maddy's messages of course just made the brunette feel even worse for what she did.
It was around 1:30 when Marsha came home to check on Adaline. She had texted the teenager multiple times asking if she was alright but she never received an answer. Marsha was worried so she decided to go home for her lunch break and check on Adaline.
"Addie? Are you awake?" Marsha called as she opened Adaline's bedroom door. She noticed that Adaline was lying in bed asleep. She walked closer to the bed and gently touched the girls shoulder. "Addie wake up. I got you lunch."
Adaline didn't wake up. Marsha noticed that the girl looked very pale. She brought her hand to Adaline's forehead and could feel that she was burning up probably with a fever. "Adaline! Hey Addie wake up!" Marsha called getting extremely worried when she got no response.
"Shit!" Marsha cursed rushing downstairs to grab her phone. She quickly dialed 911 as she went back up to Adaline's room.
"911, what's your emergency?" The operator questioned through the phone.
"Hi um my daughter is unconscious. I've tried to wake her but she's not responding. She's very pale and I think she might have a fever." Marsha hurriedly spoke into her cellphone.
"Okay do you know how long she's been unconscious for?"
"Um no I just came home from work to check on her and found her like this."
"Okay can you check to see if she's breathing? I'm going to send an ambulance to you okay?"
Marsha reached over and felt for a pulse. "She's still breathing." Marsha sighed in relief.
"Okay that's good. Someone will be there shortly." said the 911 operator.
It didn't take much longer until there was a loud knock on the door. Marsha rushed to open it directing the paramedics towards Adaline's room. She watched as they loaded Adaline's body onto a stretcher. Her heart was pounding in her chest. She was praying that Adaline was going to be okay.
Nate was at lunch when he got a message from his father. Normally he would just ignore it but something in his gut urged him to look at it and when he did his breathing stopped.
Dad - Adaline was just taken to the hospital. Your mom found her unconscious and called 911. I'm going to meet them there now. I'll text you when we find anything out.
"You good?" Maddy questioned as she noticed her boyfriend's mood change.
"No." Nate shook his head standing up from the table. "I gotta go."
Maddy was confused as she watched Nate leave the cafeteria. She wondered what upset him. She was also wondering why Adaline wasn't at school. Maddy had plans to talk to her but she never showed up.
Nate rushed out of school and to his truck. He flew down the road and to the hospital. He didn't care if he was speeding. He needed to get to Adaline immediately. Nate knew he should have stayed home with her but she insisted he go because she knew Cal would just end up yelling at Nate for skipping. Adaline didn't want to be the reason Nate got in trouble.
When Nate arrived he found his dad sitting in the waiting room. He quickly walked over startling Cal. "Nathaniel what are you doing here?"
"Where is she? Is she okay?" Nate questioned.
"Your mother is back with her. She's still unconscious but they're giving her fluids. They said she'll wake up soon. You should have stayed at school." Cal said.
"I need to be here. What happened to her?"
"The doctor said she was super dehydrated. Her blood pressure dropped and she passed out. It's good your mom found her when she did."
Nate nodded sitting down beside his father. He had a million thoughts swirling around his brain. He knew he needed to man up and break up with Maddy. Nate wanted to be with Adaline. He couldn't imagine his life without her and today only made that more clear.
Adaline's eyes slowly fluttered open. She was immediately blinded by the bright lights. She sat up slightly looking at her surroundings. She knew she was in the hospital. Marsha was sitting in a chair next to her bed. She could tell from the smudged mascara around the older woman's eyes that she had been crying.
"Oh Addie your finally awake." Marsha breathed a sigh of relief. "You had us so worried. Let me go and get the doctor." Marsha said kissing the young girl's head before leaving the room.
A minute or two later a man with black hair and glasses entered the room behind Marsha. "Aw Adaline it's great to see you finally awake. I'm Doctor Miller. Do you know why you're here?"
Adaline shook her head. "No I just remember falling asleep." The last thing she remembered was watching Twilight and thinking about Nate until she fell asleep.
"Well from what Mrs. Jacobs here tells me is that she found you unconscious. We did some tests and learned that you were severely dehydrated. Do you have any idea why that might be?" Doctor Miller asked.
"Um I haven't really been feeling well lately. I haven't been able to keep down any food."
"I see." The doctor nodded. "Miss Kingston are you sexually active?"
"I'm sorry what?" Adaline asked embarrassed. She looked at the doctor before glancing at Marsha. What the hell was she supposed to say to that?
"Adaline I'd like you to be honest with me. Are you currently sexually active?" He asked again.
Adaline took a deep breath before hesitantly nodding.
"Is there a chance that you might be pregnant?" Both Marsha and Adaline's eyes widened at the doctors question.
Shit! What if I am? Adaline thought. She knew there could be a chance. Both times that her and Nate slept together they hadn't used any protection.
"Fuck! How could we have been so stupid?" Adaline breathed out as she stood in the small hospital bathroom with a pregnancy test in her hand. The doctor had given her one to take. He suggested she take a normal test before they tested her blood.
The three minutes that passed were the longest three minutes of her life. She paced the small bathroom waiting. All she could think about was how Nate and his parents were going to react. She knew Marsha wouldn't judge her because she was a teen mom herself but she wasn't sure how Cal was going to react. Knowing him she knew it probably wasn't going to be good. A kid was going to ruin Nate's life. Instead of worrying about college and football he was going to have to worry about raising a child.
