(Feyre POV):
It was around midday. I had just fed Nyx his lunch and then brought him back up to our room with me. I had settled him on one end of the bed, keeping him busy with his various toys, while I sat on the other end, keeping a close eye on him and making a start on the pile of paperwork I had been delaying for so long.
I felt a sudden weight on me and I found Nyx crawling into my lap. He then proceeded to stand up on my legs and use none other than my face to balance himself.
"Mama," Nyx gurgled, pulling at my cheeks with his chubby hands.
"Hm?" I asked nonchalantly, flipping through some papers and setting them aside for later.
"Ma-ma," he repeated.
"Not now, Nyx. Mama's working."
"Mama!" Nyx whined, looking at me with his big blue eyes. He dug his sharp nails into my face which was definitely enough to drag my attention to my son.
"Nyx," I said in the tone that I knew irked him, even though he was only thirteen months old.
He immediately pushed his bottom lip out and let go of my face, which led him to stumbling down on my legs.
I caught him gently before he could fall and make a fuss, and pressed a kiss to his round cheek. "You got bored of playing alone, huh?" I asked.
"Mama," Nyx replied.
I smiled to myself. Mama was the only word he had learnt to say. Rhys was simply a garble of excited gurgles so far. I knew he was jealous, but I told him that it was only fair considering I carried our son around in my belly for ten months.
I sighed. "You can sit here quietly if you're going to behave, okay? Mama's busy."
Nyx grumbled and crawled out of my lap back to his end of the bed. He purposefully turned his back, wings and all, to me in response to the lack of attention he was getting. So stubborn. Even more so than his father, which was saying something.
I shook my head in slight amusement and turned my attention back to the stacks of paperwork in front of me. Then,
"Nyx."
My eyes shot in surprise to my son. Did he just...
"Nyx," I said slowly, pretending to be irritated.
There was complete silence, until... He mimicked my tone exactly, deliberately dragging his name out. "Nyx."
I couldn't help the laugh that escaped my mouth. Nyx scooted around to face me at the sound, flashing me a mischievous grin.
Rhys. I said down the bond. Come. Quickly.
My mate appeared immediately in the centre of the room, his body poised in a threatening stance, a frown etched upon his perfect face.
"What's wrong? Are you okay? Is the babe okay?" He let out in a rush.
I opened my mouth to respond, but not before Nyx heard his father's voice and his blue eyes found him, lighting up in delight when his eyes landed on him. He let out a string of excited, unintelligible soundss as he crawled to the edge of the bed, holding his arms out, demanding to be picked up.
Rhys's eyes softened and he went to lift his son into his arms, hugging him tightly to his chest and carefully dropping a kiss on the tip of his nose.
"Hey, there. I missed you," he said.
Rhys would have full-blown conversations with Nyx since the day he was born, even though he didn't understand a word of what he was saying.
Rhys finally turned his attention on me after he had cooed at Nyx, who was perfectly content being held in his arms and playing with the mating band on his ring finger.
"Everything okay, Feyre Darling?" My mate asked, shifting Nyx to sit him on his shoulders. Nyx grabbed onto fistfuls of Rhys's dark, raven locks, so similar to his own hair.
"You're distracting him," I said pointedly, even as my heart swelled with my entire universe in front of me.
Rhys grinned, looking up at Nyx. "I'm not distracting you. Am I?"
Nyx giggled happily in response, pulling at Rhys's face.
Our son's eyes began to flutter drowsily, despite the sleepy smile still covering his face. He didn't look to be in the mood to chant his name again. Maybe later.
I put my sheets of paper aside, and got off the bed to approach Rhys. I took Nyx's tiny foot in my hands, stroking a thumb over his soft ankle.
"It's nap time for this one," I said with a smile, pulling gently at his foot.
"Do you want to nap up there, Nyx?" Rhys asked.
"Mama," Nyx whispered sleepily.
"Hand my baby over," I said.
"Our baby," my mate corrected, his lips twitching towards a half smile.
I hummed in contemplation. "Mor would beg to differ. He's practically her baby."
Rhys cocked his head slightly. "Save for Madja, she was the first one to hold him," he mused.
My mind was taken back to that day when Nyx was born. The fear that consumed my entire body, worse than the pain. The thought that I would never meet my son. That my life would end before his had even begun. I remembered the panic that filled Rhys's eyes, not for himself, but for us.
A warm hand on my face brought me out of my thoughts. I lifted my eyes to see starry violet ones staring back down at me. Rhys cupped my face with his hand, rubbing soothing strokes with his thumb.
"We survived." His voice was hard, even as raw emotion swirled in his eyes. "We're all here. We're together. We're okay," he breathed.
Although his words sent reassurance flooding through me, I couldn't stop thinking about it. What Nesta had done for us, what she had given. We could never repay her back for such a gift. But I would be grateful for it. For as long as I lived, there wouldn't be a moment that I would set my eyes upon my mate and son, the two people dearest to me, and not cherish every single breath that left their bodies. These two males meant absolutely everything to me. They were my life, and I had my sister to thank that I was alive and in good health to watch it fold out.
I blinked. "I love you," I murmured. "The both of you. I love you."
Rhys smiled at me, and I leaned into his warmth as he placed a tender kiss on my lips.
"I love you," he said quietly onto my mouth.
He rested his forehead against mine, and I shut my eyes, perfectly content to just stand here in his presence, breathing him in.
Until Nyx shoved his foot in between our faces, that is. As if to say I'm still here.
"Nyx," I scolded lightly, fighting the urge to smile at him as his blue eyes blinked blearily between Rhys and I.
"Nyx," he repeated.
Rhys's eyes widened in surprise and he moved Nyx from his shoulders to hold him in the air.
"Say that again."
Nyx smiled a toothy grin at Rhys. "Nyx."
"Say that again," Rhys deadpanned, placing Nyx to lie down on the bed before tickling under his arms, and then his stomach.
Nyx's loud giggles and squeals filled the room, and I couldn't stop my own laugh as I watched him roll around the bed, and Rhys attack him with tickles and kisses.
This. This was what I lived for.
They both collapsed in a laughing heap on the bed, and Nyx passed out almost immediately, sprawled out on Rhys's chest.
"That's his second word," I commented, going to sit down beside them.
Rhys tilted his head to the side to look at me. "His third word better be 'Dadda'."
I snorted. "I can't believe he learnt his own name before yours."
"Don't mock me," he replied.
I shifted closer, extending a hand to gently run it through Nyx's dark hair, brushing it off his forehead.
"He's getting bigger," I said fondly.
"And yet he still sleeps in our bed," Rhys said.
I chuckled. "We could probably fit five fully grown people in this bed. With comfort."
Rhys cocked a brow at me, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Are you suggesting that we have two more babes, Feyre Darling?"
I shrugged. "I want more. In the future. I don't want Nyx to grow up alone." I paused, meeting Rhys's gaze. "Do you want more?"
"I want whatever you want," he said solemnly.
"How long do you want to wait?" I asked.
Rhys smirked. "We can start right now if you want."
"Nyx is in here," I retorted.
"I can be quiet," Rhys purred. "Can you?"
I ignored the burning in his gaze, in his voice.
"You're going to be stuck there until Nyx wakes up, you know. If you try to move him, he'll wake up and throw a fit," I said amusedly.
"Come and lie with us," Rhys beckoned.
"I don't think there's room," I frowned.
"There's always room for you, mate," Rhys smiled, shifting Nyx slightly over to free up the other half of his body. "Come here."
I debated it over in my head, thinking about all the paperwork I still had to do. However, that didn't stop me from sliding under Rhys's arm and burying my head in the crook of his neck.
"Much better," Rhys said, satisfied. "We're stuck together, now."
"Until this little one is up again," I added.
"Back to no peace," Rhys groaned softly, running his fingers in feather-light touches up and down my arm.
We lay in silence for a while, the most prominent sound being Nyx's steady breathing.
Rhys eventually broke the quiet. "We can have Cassian and Nesta watch Nyx for the evening, or Mor. I know that you haven't been getting much rest lately, what with always having to keep one eye open for this one."
I smiled at the concern lacing his voice, and moved my head down to rest my chin on his chest, looking up at his face. "I would really like that," I said truthfully. "Thank you."
He tucked a strand of hair that had fallen in front of my eyes behind my ear. "It's the least I can do for you. I try to do as much as I can to help you wi-"
"Rhys. You do enough," I said firmly, pressing a kiss to his mouth to shut him up. "You do more than enough."
"So, tonight?" Rhys asked, the stars in his eyes lighting up.
"Please."
It's not that I wanted to get away from Nyx - of course I didn't. He was my son and I loved him with all that I had. But, being a mother was slowly tiring me out. It was true that Rhys helped more than I would ever ask of him, insisting to be the one to stay awake when Nyx would wake us up in the middle of the night with his cries and let me sleep, and watching over him so that I was able to take some time to myself and go paint with Ressina and the children.
Rhys and I barely had any time to spend alone with one another these days. In fact, I didn't remember the last time that we had. We didn't want to leave Nyx with any member of our family too often because we didn't want to burden them, although we knew that they would immediately agree without hesitation. Nyx was spoilt for love.
Cassian loved to play with him. Nesta would quietly read to him, which would keep him still when he was throwing a tantrum or becoming impatient. Mor would take him out with her into the city, taking him along for whatever she had planned. She was fond of just being in his presence. She also was in the habit of buying him clothes upon clothes and picking his outfits. Azriel was content to just sit with his nephew in his lap, occasionally bringing his shadows out to comfort Nyx and let him play with them. Elain would bake him cookies and all types of sweet treats, and take him for walks out in the garden with her. And Amren... Amren was Amren. She loved the baby as much as any of them did, even if she didn't spend as much time as the others did with him. She had never protested the few times that I had dropped Nyx off at her small apartment.
It was important for Nyx to spend time with each and everyone of them, because they were all his family as much as Rhys and I were. They loved him fiercely, and I knew that they would do anything for him.
Anything for Nyx.
