Chapter 4
19:46, 1 April 2025Moiraine took a slow, deliberate step into the dimly lit chamber, her keen eyes scanning every shadowed corner as memories pressed against her like unseen hands. The air was thick with the scent of aged parchment, melted beeswax, and something older—something that whispered of forgotten power. The walls of smooth, cold stone bore faint traces of dust, undisturbed for what felt like an age, and as she ran her fingers along them, she could feel the weight of the past clinging to the air.
It had been so long since she had stood in this room. Time had not been kind to it—nor to her.
A quiet sadness settled over her, heavier than she would allow herself to acknowledge. So much had been sacrificed for her mission, a mission that had taken far more than it had given. Names long buried, choices that had shaped the world, all of them leading to this moment.
But she had no time for sentiment.
Taking a steady breath, she pushed her emotions aside, locking them away with the discipline of an Aes Sedai. She straightened her shoulders, letting the weight of her blue-fringed shawl settle over her as she turned her gaze upon the figure waiting for her.
Lanfear.
The Forsaken's presence was like moonlight on a dagger's edge—ethereal, luminous, yet edged with something that promised death. Draped in flowing white, her raven-dark hair cascading like liquid silk over her shoulders, she exuded an effortless elegance, as if she belonged to some age where the very idea of dust was foreign. Her pale eyes, like polished moonstone, regarded Moiraine with knowing amusement as she lounged against the bed, unbothered, unconcerned.
Moiraine clenched her jaw, inwardly cursing herself for making such an easy target of herself. She had faced Forsaken before, had fought those whose names were whispered with terror, but none unsettled her quite like Lanfear.
"I want to protect Rand from the other Forsaken," Moiraine said, her voice even, measured, though she felt the weight of every word. "I know you want the same, so I need your help to prevent him from being attacked."
Lanfear arched a single, delicate brow, as if Moiraine had just suggested the most laughable thing in the world. Then, with an almost lazy grace, she sat up, hands resting in her lap.
"And why, exactly, would I risk my life to save him?" she asked, voice velvet-soft, but beneath it lay something sharp, something dangerous.
Moiraine did not hesitate. "Risk your life? The others don't even care about you. They tolerate you only because you love Rand."
The flicker was small—just a breath of hesitation in Lanfear's pale eyes—but Moiraine caught it.
Then Lanfear laughed.
Not a polite chuckle, nor a sharp, bitter sound—no, this was full-bodied, rich with amusement and something darker, something Moiraine could not quite name. The sound sent a chill through her.
"Love him?" Lanfear wiped a stray tear from the corner of her eye, still chuckling. "Light, he's the most tiresome man I've had the misfortune of dealing with. If I ever truly loved him, I'd do us all a favor and throw myself into the Void."
Moiraine's brow furrowed.
Lanfear leaned forward slightly, a conspiratorial gleam in her gaze. "Everyone assumes I act out of love, but the truth is—" she smiled, the kind of smile that had lured nations to ruin, "—I simply enjoy playing the game."
The air shifted.
The chamber around them flickered, like candlelight struggling against an unseen breeze, and the stone walls dissolved into the shimmering haze of Tel'aran'rhiod.
The World of Dreams pulsed with an unseen rhythm, reshaping itself with the ebb and flow of their emotions. The chamber was gone, replaced by an endless twilight expanse. Shadowed mountains loomed in the distance, their peaks ever-changing, and in the farthest reaches of the sky, stars burned like dying embers.
Moiraine exhaled softly, forcing herself to ignore the way the dream-realm responded to Lanfear's presence. Here, she was not merely a woman; she was a force.
"I am not interested in the other Forsaken," Lanfear murmured. "Or even in Rand."
She moved forward, slow and deliberate, her white dress untouched by the shifting ground beneath them.
"I agreed to meet because you were here."
Moiraine did not move, but she felt the world tilt slightly beneath her feet.
Lanfear studied her, pale eyes flickering with something unreadable. "I must say, I'm surprised to see you without your loyal little puppy, Lan." Her lips curled in amusement, but her voice held something softer. Something almost... wistful.
The war, the Dragon Reborn, the fate of the Pattern—none of it existed in this moment. Here, there were only two women standing in the dream.
Moiraine was the first to step back.
Her heart was steady, her mind sharp, but something about this encounter felt different. She had seen Lanfear's cruelty, had fought against her, and yet—there was something else now. Something she could not name.
Lanfear hesitated. Just for a breath, an unfamiliar flicker of uncertainty passed across her face.
Then she straightened, her usual arrogance slipping back into place.
"I'll help you," she said at last, her voice softer than before. "I will contact you."
She turned, as if to vanish into the mist, but just before she did, Moiraine spoke.
"Thank you, Lanfear."
It was barely above a whisper, but it was enough.
Lanfear stilled.
A breath. A moment.
Then, with the faintest hitch in her breath, she disappeared, leaving behind only the scent of roses and something deeper.
Moiraine gasped awake.
The air was thick with the scent of old wood and damp stone, the warmth of Tel'aran'rhiod fading into the cold reality of the waking world. Her heart thundered in her chest as she stared at the ceiling, listening to the distant murmur of voices from below.
The meeting had ended, but the echo of it lingered.
She pressed a hand to her chest, exhaling slowly, as if to steady herself against the strange, lingering warmth curling within her.
Perhaps... she wished it had been more than just a dream.
