The late-October air carried the faintest chill — that sweet, gentle kind of cold that hinted at the start of the holiday season. Even in Los Angeles, the night sky above the Disney+ Halloween Fest shimmered with soft gold string lights, casting warm glows over the outdoor courtyard that had been transformed into a pumpkin-filled dream.
Paper lanterns shaped like ghosts and Mickey pumpkins hung from the trees. Fake cobwebs stretched across the lampposts. The air smelled like caramel apples, cinnamon churros, and the faint, unmistakable sweetness of cotton candy. Laughter echoed from the crowd — a mix of Disney stars, influencers, and familiar faces from across the studio.
And in the middle of it all stood Diana — dressed head to toe in soft pinks and pastels, her blonde curls falling down her back. Her Little Bo Peep costume was perfect: pink polkadot flowy pants, her top trimmed in baby blue, and a shepherd's crook she'd insisted on carrying even though it had already hit three people by accident.
Beside her stood Malachi. His Woody costume was spot-on: cowboy hat, yellow plaid shirt, denim jeans tucked into brown boots, and a cow-print vest. He'd even pinned a plastic sheriff badge on his chest, which Diana had teased him about endlessly.
He tilted his hat with a grin as they walked towards the event, the flashes from the small blue carpet beginning immediately.
"You ready, partner?" he asked, putting on his best cowboy accent.
Diana rolled her eyes, laughing. "If you keep talking like that all night, I might lose it."
He laughed, offering his arm dramatically. "C'mon, Little Bo Peep. Let's go wrangle some sheep."
She took his arm, playing along with an exaggerated curtsy. "Lead the way, Sheriff."
The two walked hand in hand down the blue carpet — a miniature version of the usual red carpet, lined with pumpkins and silver stars. Photographers called their names, snapping photos as they posed together. Diana leaned into him, smiling wide, her hand resting lightly on his chest as Malachi grinned at the cameras.
"Alright," one of the photographers called out, "now one where you're in character!"
Malachi immediately turned to her, tipping his hat and giving his best cowboy smirk. "Ma'am," he said in a southern drawl that made her laugh so hard she almost ruined the picture.
Diana clutched her staff, trying to compose herself but barely managing. "You're ridiculous," she whispered through a grin.
He grinned wider. "And you love it."
"Unfortunately," she teased back.
Once the photos wrapped, they stepped off the carpet, finally free from the flash frenzy. The music of the event — an upbeat remix of Disney Halloween classics — floated through the courtyard. Costumed guests mingled, chatting near food stands and game booths.
Malachi's eyes lit up as he spotted a booth giving out caramel corn. "Oh, yes."
Diana laughed. "We just got here and you're already going for food?"
"Listen," he said, mock serious. "A cowboy's gotta eat."
She nudged his arm playfully. "You're never gonna drop the cowboy thing tonight, are you?"
He winked. "Nope."
They strolled through the event, hand in hand, pausing to admire the decorations. There was a giant inflatable Oogie Boogie in one corner, a setup of fog machines blowing mist across the ground, and a "Spooky Selfie Station" where people posed in front of carved pumpkins shaped like their favorite Disney characters.
Diana was about to suggest stopping for photos when a familiar voice squealed from behind them.
"Oh my gosh!"
They turned just in time to see Freya rushing toward them, her blonde hair glittering with fairy dust and her green Tinkerbell dress glowing under the lights. Tiny wings fluttered behind her, shimmering with every movement.
"Look at you two!" she gasped, beaming and pulling Diana into a hug. "You're like straight out of Toy Story!"
Diana laughed, spinning in a little circle so Freya could see the full outfit. "I know! Isn't it cute?"
"It's perfect!" Freya said, then turned to Malachi. "You nailed Woody."
"Thank you," Malachi said proudly, tipping his hat. "You look awesome, Tink."
"Thanks!" she grinned. "This party is insane, right? They really went all out."
"It's magical," Diana agreed, looking around at the glowing pumpkins and floating lights.
Before they could say more, another voice chimed in — deep and slightly muffled by a mask.
"Did someone order a superhero?"
They turned to see a full-grown Deadpool walking toward them — the costume perfect, from the red-and-black suit to the mask.
Freya blinked, confused, until he pulled off the mask.
"Mk?!" Diana gasped, eyes widening.
Malachi laughed loudly. "No way!"
Mk grinned, shaking his hair out. "Surprise!"
"I thought you were still in Australia!" Freya said, hugging him tightly.
"I was!" Mk said with a wink. "But I couldn't miss this."
Freya smacked his arm. "You didn't even tell me you were coming!"
"Wanted to see the reaction," he teased, looking proud of himself. "Totally worth it."
The group chatted for a while, laughing about costumes, travel stories, and projects. Every few minutes, someone from another show or series stopped to say hi — Disney stars in every direction. It felt like a reunion of every era of Disney Channel, and Diana couldn't help smiling at how surreal it felt.
Eventually, Malachi tugged on her hand. "Hey," he said softly, "look who it is."
Diana turned — and instantly smiled.
Across the courtyard, Dani and Pasha were walking hand in hand, Nikita skipping between them. Nikita was dressed as a tiny gray mouse — fluffy ears, sparkly whiskers, and a little pink nose painted on her face.
Diana's heart melted instantly. "Oh my gosh, look at her."
They walked over, and Nikita's face lit up the second she saw them.
"Bo Peep!" she squealed, running straight for Diana.
Diana knelt down, arms open. "Hi, baby!" she said, catching Nikita in a hug.
Malachi chuckled as the little girl pulled back and pointed at him next. "Woody!"
"That's me," Malachi said proudly, crouching beside them. "Howdy, partner."
Nikita giggled uncontrollably, clapping her hands. "Woody and Bo Peep!" she repeated like it was the best discovery ever.
Pasha and Dani walked up, smiling. "You two look incredible," Dani said warmly. "Seriously — those costumes are perfect."
"Thank you," Diana said, standing again. "She's adorable. I'm obsessed with her costume."
"She's been waiting all week for this," Pasha laughed. "Though I think Woody might've just stolen her heart."
At that, Nikita held her arms up toward Malachi. "Up!"
Dani laughed, looking over at Diana. "Oh, you've got competition now."
Diana smiled, watching as Malachi scooped Nikita up effortlessly. "That's okay. I'll share my favorite cowboy."
Malachi laughed, playfully rolling his eyes.
They spent the next hour walking around together, playing games and exploring the booths. Malachi and Nikita teamed up to toss rings over mini pumpkins, while Diana cheered them on from behind. Every time Nikita hit a target, she'd squeal, throwing her arms around Malachi's neck.
At one booth, they decorated sugar cookies — and Nikita got so much frosting on her nose that Diana couldn't stop laughing.
"Hold still," Diana giggled, wiping her nose gently.
"Frosting!" Nikita declared proudly.
"Yes, lots of it," Malachi said with mock seriousness, holding up his cookie. "And this is a cookie catastrophe."
By the time Dani and Pasha came back to collect Nikita — who was half-asleep in Malachi's arms — the night had grown darker, the lights softer. The crowd had thinned, leaving the courtyard calmer, quieter, wrapped in that kind of warm stillness only late nights have.
Dani smiled as she took her daughter. "Thanks for playing with her," she said. "She's gonna sleep well tonight."
"Anytime," Diana said, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "She's perfect."
"Have fun, you two," Pasha added, winking as they left.
When they were gone, Diana turned back to Malachi. The music had slowed to a soft instrumental version of "Grim Grinning Ghosts," the pumpkin lights flickering gently.
"You know," she said, looking around at the glowing scene, "I think this might be one of my favorite nights."
Malachi tilted his head. "Yeah?"
She nodded. "It's simple, fun, and I get to spend it with you."
He smiled softly. "Yeah, I like that too."
They wandered away from the crowd, toward the quieter part of the venue where the path wound around a small fountain. The sound of water trickling mixed with the faint hum of distant laughter.
Malachi stopped, turning to her. "You look really beautiful tonight."
She smiled, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Even dressed like a porcelain doll?"
"Especially dressed like a porcelain doll," he said, grinning.
She laughed quietly, shaking her head. "You're such a flirt."
"Only with you."
Her heart did that familiar little skip it always did when he said things like that.
They stood there for a while — just talking softly, the kind of quiet conversation that felt easy, unhurried.
Diana looked up at him, her smile fading into something gentler. "Do you ever think about how crazy this all is? Like, everything that's happened?"
He nodded slowly. "All the time." He reached out, taking her hand. "But then I think about nights like this — and it feels pretty simple. Just... right."
"Yeah. It does, "She smiled faintly, squeezing his hand. "Can you believe it's gonna be one year soon?"
"Crazy how fast it goes." Malachi smiled, thumb brushing against her jaw, "One year of us."
For a long moment, they just stood there — Woody and Bo Peep under the soft glow of string lights, surrounded by pumpkins and laughter. The world felt small and warm and safe.
Malachi lifted a hand, tipping his hat with a smirk. "So, Bo Peep," he said quietly, stepping closer, "you ever dance with a cowboy?"
She laughed. "I might've danced with one once or twice."
"Well," he said, pulling her closer, "make it three."
And there, beneath the golden light and the shimmer of Disney magic, they danced. Slowly, gently, not caring who might see. The fountain glimmered nearby, the music soft and faint in the distance.
Diana rested her head against his shoulder, her eyes closing. "I love you," she whispered.
He smiled, his hand sliding to her back. "I love you too."
They swayed together, laughter drifting faintly through the night. And when she looked up again, the way he was looking at her — soft, steady, like she was the only person in the world — made her heart swell.
She leaned up, and he met her halfway, their kiss warm and full of everything that made them them — joy, love, friendship, and that easy magic that always seemed to follow them wherever they went.
As they pulled apart, Diana grinned, whispering, "You've got a friend in me, Sheriff."
Malachi laughed quietly, brushing his thumb over her cheek. "Forever, Bo Peep."
The lights shone softly above them, and the night faded into the kind of memory that would linger — the smell of caramel, the sound of laughter, and the warmth of his hand in hers.
