Haikyuu!! Tobio's Girl Chapter 9

Reina yawned, changed her shoes, and dragged herself to the classroom.

Yesterday she became Kageyama's girlfriend. She was bouncing between euphoria and despair all night long, unable to figure out how to act now. All that she hoped dating would be didn't apply here. There was no chance in the world that they would hang out together after school or go on weekend dates because Kageyama didn't care to spend time with her, no doubt about it. He said that to her face. She was glad that she didn't expose how much she cared and how much she liked him.

But she wanted to spend more time with Kageyama... So after hours of thinking, she decided to write to him.

"Hi, I was just wondering if you want to eat lunch together from now on."

She sent it with a pounding heart, and only then did she realize it was after midnight already. What was even more dreadful, she was still awake when he wrote her back around 5 a.m. Of course, he responded only with a short "Ok."

Now, she was strolling through the school half-dead. I wonder if he's in yet? And how should I greet him anyway? Suddenly, she noticed that there was more whispering around her than usual. Am I paranoid, or do people already know? But how? Great, now we will have additional eyes on us. As if it wasn't awkward already.

Hesitantly, she entered the classroom. Kageyama was already in. He was sleeping on his desk after morning practice, as usual.

Eri waved to her, so she hurried that way.

"Is it just me, or does everyone already know?" Reina told her friend everything yesterday after school, seeking advice.

"Well, I haven't told anyone. But those things seem to spread mysteriously. Or maybe, you're just imagining it."

"Reina-chan, Reina-chan." Miyako and Sawako came over to them.

"Is that true? Are you and Kageyama dating?" Miyako asked in an excited whisper.

"Well, yes," she said, blushing. So people did find out somehow. There was nothing left but to confirm it.

"Incredible! Such an odd pairing." Sawako said.

"I knew something was up. You talked with him so often," she added.

"Yes, come to think of it, you stared in his direction a lot," Miyako said.

"What? You must have imagined..." Reina laughed nervously. Although, there was no sense in denying that now.

"But why didn't you say you like him earlier? We could have helped."

Reina didn't know how to respond. They were surprisingly supportive. She expected that they would tease her instead.

"I guess it's difficult to admit you like someone." She said, covering her red face with her hands. She glanced at Kageyama. Good, he was still dozing off.

"I'll be cheering for you two," Miyako said. "But tell us more! How did it happen? Who confessed first?"

"Kobayashi-senpai will probably stop chasing after you now. l I heard that girls that are already taken are out of bounds for him. Apparently, he once tried to pick up someone with a scary boyfriend. It didn't end well," Eri said to change the subject. Reina was grateful.

"Oh, how do you know?" Sawako took the bait.

"I just know someone who knows him... It's just something that I heard." Eri admitted unwillingly.

Soon, the bell sounded.

Reina looked at Kageyama. He woke up and was looking back at her. She averted her eyes and started blushing again. But why, though? He was her boyfriend now, so why should she look away? She forced herself to look back at him. He was now looking all around, but soon he met her gaze and was staring back, looking more and more puzzled. Reina put a hand over her mouth to hide a giggle. It was so silly but fun as well. She realized that now no one could deny her right to stare at Kageyama. She kept doing that randomly throughout the morning.

Then at the lunch break, she stood up with resolve. She grabbed her bento and turned towards Kageyama's desk. They were supposed to eat together, right? Then she realized that Kageyama had done the same thing. And now, they were standing awkwardly in the middle of the classroom. She felt people staring at them.

" You wrote about lunch?" Kageyama asked, confused.

" I know. Let's just eat outside. I know a good spot." Desperate for some support, she looked at Eri, still sitting at her desk. "Eri, do you want to go eat with us?"

„Oh, I wouldn't dare to intrude on you, lovebirds. But don't mind me if I watch you two from afar. You make my day." Eri responded, chuckling. Reina turned red once more.

„Can we go now? I'm hungry" Kageyama seemed completely unphased.

„ Let's go," she said and led him quickly through the crowds to her favorite tree in the courtyard. She looked around. It was good. The weather was nice, summery. And although she saw some spectators, there were further away and not so bothersome. She sat down next to Kageyama, who was already unpacking his food. She opened up her bento.

„Do you want to try mine?" she asked bashfully.

„Takenaka, you need to eat some food sometimes too."

„It's ok. I made more today."

„Ok then, homecooked is the best." Kageyama was eager to try now.

„It seems that yours have a lot of store-bought stuff."

„Well, yeah. My mom works full-time, so she doesn't always have time to make my lunch. She said it's impossible to cook enough to feed me. I can make some basic stuff myself. I'm always more concerned with nutrition than taste, anyway. And you can make anything good if you throw a curry roux on it. But yours are on another level. Do you make them yourself?

„Yes. My grandma teaches me how to cook. My mum is not so often at home too. She is a marine biologist. That's why I lived with my dad in the UK. His work is more stationary. Although he is on a project in the US now."

„Isn't the UK and the US the same thing?" Kageyama asked and covered his face to yawn.

„Kageyama, we need to figure out how to teach you geography. Maybe by your favorite international players? Although I doubt the UK has any."

„Osuuu... This tree looks super comfy... and the air is so nice...." Kageyama had eaten his lunch already. He rested his head on the tree bark and closed his eyes. Soon he was dozing off.

So I guess that's it for conversation. Reina yawned with jealousy, wishing she could nap too. She felt so sleep-deprived. If she could just cuddle up next to him... Her heart fluttered at the thought. Still, it was nice to look at his sleeping face. Not that she hadn't seen him asleep before, but she had never been so close. His hair looked so shiny and soft. His face became peaceful. She sat in silence, not daring to spoil this precious moment. But somebody came over and spoiled it for her. Reina looked up to see Yamato from Class 4, smirking at her.

"So Takenaka-chan, this is what turns you on. I thought you had a more refined taste in men. I'd never suspect you would choose muscle over brain. What do you see in such a dull guy?" Yamato was always irritating her, whatever he said, but he was plain rude this time. Reina had enough of it. She won't keep quiet.

"Let's see. At least he isn't full of himself, unlike you. Also, he is tall, athletic, and handsome. Why wouldn't I like him? And his brain might be better than yours. He learned a semester's worth of science in, like, 2 days. I doubt you could do that. Most of all, he's deadly awesome when he plays volleyball. Quite the opposite of dull."

"Well... I offered you to hang out with the elite, but you're such a..." Yamato was struggling to make an insulting retort, but suddenly fear showed on his face.

Reina looked to the side and saw that Kageyama's eyes were open. Moreover, he was smiling in the most sinister, gloating way.

"Whatever, I'm leaving," Yamato said and was gone in a second.

Reina didn't care. She was focused on Kageyama and painfully aware that she just admitted out loud that she liked him, thought him good-looking, and whatever other silly thing she said.

"Why do you look so pleased, Kageyama?" she asked anxiously.

"You praised my volleyball skills," he said with glee.

Reina snickered. He looked at her, surprised.

"Let's better go back to the classroom." Reina thought that eating lunch together may not be much in terms of dating, but she was already anticipating the one tomorrow.
