~Chapter 2~

05:20, 1 July 2013

Before I knew it we were walking up the driveway to the front door of the newly sold house. I was half nervous, but half excited about meeting whoever lived here. Molly pressed the doorbell, the freshly iced and decorated cake in her other hand. I tapped my foot in anticipation, and pushed my blonde fringe out of my eyes.

A woman answered the door, she was obviously the mother of the household. She smiled as Molly introduced us.

"Hello! We live across the road. I'm Molly, the housekeeper, and this is Alexis."

The woman introduced herself as Leah, and invited us into the house.

"My daughter is about your age, I'll go and get her for you."

Leah said to me as I took a seat on the lounge.

Daughter? Bummer. No boys. Still, having a friend who lives across from me will be awesome, especially if she's my age.

Leah returned, taking the cake from Molly and putting the kettle on.

"Coffee and cake?"

Molly nodded.

I looked around the house. It was just as large and furniture filled as my own, yet it felt more home-like and I couldn't figure out why.

A teenage girl walked into the room. Her hair was a light chocolate brown, reaching down to her hips. She wore floral jeans, and somehow managed to look good in them. Tall, thin and slightly tanned. I knew this girl couldn't possibly be single. A wave of jealousy hit me as I watched her green eyes meet mine.

"Hey, I'm Hannah."

She smiled, sitting down next to me. I smiled back.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Lexi!"

We had some of Molly's cake, which was as delicious as always, and then Hannah showed me to her room.

"So, how old are you?"

She asked, flopping down onto the bed and motioning for me to do the same.

"16, you?"

I lay next to her, staring at her roof. Half of it was covered in photos of her and her family and friends. Obviously it wasn't finished as they'd only recently moved in.

"I'm 16 too! Single?"

"Forever alone with my 27 cats!"

I laughed. She laughed too.

"I don't think so, you're stunning."

She poked me In the side.

"Pshhh. Thanks, but.. You could be wrong! Anyway what about you? Got a special someone?"

I nudged her, winking.

She stood up on the bed, pulled a photo off the roof and handed it to me. "Ashton."

The photo was of her and Ashton underneath a tree, his arms around her waist and hers around his neck. They looked like the perfect couple. Ashton had blonde hair, he was tall too, taller than Hannah. I gave the photo back to her, watching her place it back up in it's spot. Then I turned my attention to the other photos. Mostly just Hannah and her mum.

And then it hit me.

The reason why this house felt more home-like than my own was because a mother lived here. I haven't had a mother for 6 years now. I miss that.

"Lex! We have to go!"

Molly called me from the lounge room. Hannah and I both jumped up and answered her calls.

"Hey Lex, Dan's going out tonight with his mates so I've invited Hannah and her mum for dinner at ours! How does that sound?"

Molly asked. I looked at Hannah, who had a huge smile spread across her face.

"Sounds brilliant!"
