What the hell just happened?
Those are the only coherent thoughts racing through Lauren's mind as the ambulance doors slam shut and the vehicle jolts into motion. She's squeezed in next to Lucy, the two of them sitting on the bench next to Tim, who lies on the stretcher, his eyes fluttering open and closed as the paramedics work on him. His skin is pale, almost translucent in the harsh lights of the ambulance, and there's a sheen of sweat on his brow that wasn't there moments ago."Is it the virus?" Lucy's voice is barely more than a whisper, the fear in her eyes mirroring Lauren's own. Lauren wants to reassure her, to say that Tim will be okay, but the words stick in her throat. Instead, she reaches for Lucy's hand, squeezing it tightly, offering what little comfort she can.The doctor, a young woman with a stern expression, shakes her head. "There's no bleeding. It looks like he's having a severe reaction to the vaccine." Lauren feels a flicker of relief, but it's quickly overshadowed by a new concern. If the vaccine is causing this much distress, what does that mean for Tim's chances?Suddenly, Tim starts seizing. Lauren's eyes widen in horror, her mind racing as she tries to process what she's seeing. Without a second thought, she reaches out and places one hand firmly on Tim's shoulder, and the other hand on his leg."He's going into anaphylactic shock," the doctor tells the paramedics, her voice tight with urgency. The ambulance's sirens scream as it races towards the hospital, the lights flashing a frantic red and blue through the early morning fog. Tim's body jerks and convulses, his breathing ragged. Lauren feels helpless, watching the medical team work on him, their movements a blur of professionalism and urgency. As the vehicle comes to an abrupt halt, the sound of bullets piercing the metal is like a nightmare coming to life. The world outside the ambulance is suddenly a war zone, the sharp cracks of gunfire slicing through the air. Lauren's instincts take over as she throws her body over Tim's, protecting him from the flying shards of danger. The world around her is chaos, but her focus is solely on the man beneath her, her heart hammering in her chest. Her eyes meet Lucy's, the terror in her friend's gaze mirroring her own. They know the risks, but there's no time to hesitate. Lucy nods, her eyes filled with steely determination. They both jump into action, moving swiftly to the front of the ambulance. Lauren yanks open the driver's side door, her gun drawn, her eyes scanning the area for any signs of danger. Lucy is right behind her, her own weapon at the ready.Jackson has already assessed the situation and points to the right side of the house. "Cover fire from here," he says, his voice steady despite the chaos. Lauren nods and takes off in the opposite direction, her legs pumping as she sprints towards the left side of the house. She hears Lucy's footsteps behind her, but she's already focusing on the task at hand.As they round the corner, she catches sight of a woman, a rifle slung over their shoulder. Her heart hammers in her chest as she brings her gun up and fires. The figure jolts, dropping to the ground with a pained cry. She doesn't stop to check if it's one of the suspects or an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire—there's no time for that. She keeps moving, staying low and fast.Nolan's shot hits the suspects in the shoulder. As Nolan is reloading his gun, Lauren sees the woman start to lift her gun, but before she can get a shot off, the ambulance doors open and Tim, with surprising speed, aims his gun at the woman and pulls the trigger. The shot rings out, echoing through the tense air. The woman's body jerks as the bullet hits her, and she drops to the ground, her gun slipping from her grip.Tim's eyes are wide with shock, his breaths coming in quick pants. Lauren's heart squeezes with fear and pride. He's okay. He's alive. She runs over to him, checking him over, her hands shaking. "Nice shot." she says with a genuine smile.Nolan turns to Tim, his eyes scanning the young rookie's face. "You okay?"Tim gives a light chuckle, his voice strained from the exertion. "I should've taken yesterday off." The tension in the air cracks slightly with his attempt at humor. Laurem can't help but feel a twinge of warmth at Tim's resilience, his ability to find a shred of lightness in the darkest of moments.
...
The next two weeks pass in a whirlwind of hospital visits, debriefs, and a city slowly returning to normal. Tim's recovery is a miracle, the vaccine reaction a rare side effect that leaves him with nothing but a week of bedrest and a newfound respect for the fragility of life. Lauren finds herself at his side more often than not, bringing him food, comfort, and the latest gossip from the precinct to keep his spirits up. Their bond deepens, the flirty banter now tinged with something more profound, a silent understanding that the line between life and death had been crossed and they had emerged together. As Lauren walks into the briefing room, she sees Tim sitting at one of the tables talking to Lucy. He looks better, the color back in his cheeks and a spark in his eyes that had been absent since the incident. She can't help but feel a sense of relief and happiness seeing him like this, back in his element. She strides over, her hand reaching out to give his shoulder a squeeze. "Hey."Tim looks up, and his eyes meet hers. For a moment, it's just the two of them in the room, the weight of the last few weeks seeming to evaporate in the warmth of their shared gaze. "Hey," he says, his voice a little rough around the edges. Lauren can't help but feel a flutter in her stomach. As she takes a seat beside him, Sgt. Grey strides into the room, his presence commanding the attention of every officer present. "Alright. Who can tell me what these numbers mean?" Grey asks while he writes to numbers, '97, 91 and 81.' on the chalkboard."Those are the scores to our six-month exams, sir," Nolan says confidently, his eyes never leaving the board. Lauren and Tim exchange a proud glance. "That is correct Officer Nolan," Grey nods, his eyes scanning the room."We all passed!" Lucy says with a smile, breaking the tension in the room. The atmosphere lightens immediately.Sgt. Grey nods, his eyes still on the board. "Technically yes, but that 81 is ugly, given that an 80 is basically an F." The room falls silent, the gravity of his words sinking in. "I want your guesses as to which score is yours by end of shift."The rookies exchange glances, their smiles fading. They know Grey well enough to understand that this isn't a joke. The implication is clear: one of them is barely passing, and they're all responsible for each other's growth."And since you all technically passed," Sgt. Grey says, his eyes still on the board, "you can all wear short sleeves." The rookies all smile, it's like a promotion, switching from long to short sleeves.Everyone cheers and claps, the room filled with a mix of relief and excitement, the tension of the moment dissipating like smoke in the wind. Lauren's heart swells with pride for her team, for Tim, for the way they've all come together in the face of such adversity. But before the applause can fully die down, Nolan speaks up, his voice cutting through the noise like a knife. "Sir, will I be riding with Officer Clark today?"Sgt. Grey looks at Nolan, his expression unreadable. "Actually, I was thinking. Me. How does that sound?" There's a hint of sarcasm in his tone, but it's clear he's dead serious.Nolan nods, a half-smile playing on his lips as he gives Grey two thumbs up. Lauren can't help but chuckle at the interaction. It's a reminder of the camaraderie that has grown between them all, even in the face of fear and danger. As the officers start to disperse from the briefing room, Lauren, Tim, and Angela find themselves in the hallway, their voices a low murmur amidst the bustle of the precinct. "You look worried." Angela says, her eyes searching Tim's face for any sign of doubt.Tim crosses his arms in front of his chest. "It's just...I've never had a rookie score that low on an exam before." The words hang in the air, a silent admission of his own fears and insecurities. Lauren feels a pang of empathy for him. She knows that Tim holds himself to high standards, that he takes his role as a training officer seriously."There's a first time for everything," Angela says with a smile, trying to lighten the mood. Lauren nods in agreement.Tim's eyes meet hers, a hint of something unspoken passing between them. Lauren clears her throat and speaks up, "Tim, Chen is a natural-born test taker. I helped her study. She did fine."Tim nods, his gaze lingering on Lauren for a beat too long. "Yeah, you're right," he says, his voice a bit gruff. "Plus, Nolan didn't even finish college, and she had me as her T.O." Lauren playfully rolls her eyes, the tension between them easing slightly. But the moment is fleeting as Lucy strides into the hallway, her new short-sleeved uniform a declaration of their collective victory. "What are you doing?" Tim asks, sternly, referring to her short sleeves."What?" Lucy says, her smile fading as she looks at her training officer."My rookies wear long sleeves and ties until the last day of probation." Tim says, his voice firm but with a twinkle in his eye. Lauren and Angela exchange a knowing glance, both aware of the significance of this statement."Yeah but," Lucy protests, her voice a mix of frustration and bewilderment. "Sgt. Grey said—"Tim cuts her off, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Grey is not your training officer. I am. I have complete discretion of the training of my boot," he says, using the slang term for rookie with a touch of affection. "And that includes the uniform." His voice is firm, but the glint in his eye tells Lauren that he's enjoying this power play. "So go change back into your long sleeves and don't forget the tie."Lucy rolls her eyes and turns around to go back to the locker room. Lauren can't help but smirk at the sight of Lucy's defeated stride, the slap of her boots echoing down the hallway. Tim's strict adherence to the rules is something they've all grown to expect, but it's moments like these that remind Lauren of the man beneath the stern exterior. The afternoon stretches out before them, the sun dipping low in the sky, casting long shadows across the precinct. Lauren has taken five calls today, each one a mix of the mundane and the heart-stopping. A stolen bicycle, a heated neighbor dispute, and a potential assault all blend into a blur of faces and voices, but she's handled them all with her usual calm confidence. She's come a long way from her early days as a rookie, and it shows in the way she carries herself, in the way her colleagues look to her for guidance. As the shift winds down, Lauren finds herself going to a big crime scene that happened earlier today. Lauren pulls up to the crime scene, the flashing lights of the patrol cars and forensic vans painting the night in strobes of red and blue. She steps out of the car, the cool evening air a stark contrast to the adrenaline still pumping through her veins from the chase. She walks over to Sgt. Grey, who's talking to the other training officers and Jessica, her eyes scanning the area. The tension is palpable, the gravity of the situation etched into every furrowed brow and tightened jaw."What happened?" Laura asks, her voice a mix of concern and professional curiosity.Angela's eyes are wide as she recounts the bizarre tale. "A group dressed up as fake cops and are now on the run." Laura's brows furrow as she listens intently.Grey nods solemnly. "We'll assess everything tomorrow. For now, go home and rest."Lauren nods and heads back to the car, her mind racing with the day's events. The quiet hum of the engine is the only sound as she pulls out of the precinct parking lot and into the night. The city seems to breathe a sigh of relief as the sun dips below the horizon, the shadows stretching out like a comforting blanket over the streets. After she parks in her designated spot at the station, she goes up to the locker room and sees Tim standing in the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest. He's watching her, the question in his eyes unspoken but clear. Lauren takes a deep breath and walks towards him, her heart pounding in her chest. When she's close enough, he speaks, his voice casual but with an underlying current of something more. "Wanna come over?" The flirty tone sends a shiver down her spine, and she can't help but feel the pull of his magnetic personality. She hesitates for a moment, her thoughts racing with the implications of his invitation."I would, but the new episode of The Bachelor is on, and Lucy ordered Chinese." Lauren says with a cheeky smile. Tim' sarcastically takes offense, "You're choosing reality TV and food over me?"Lauren gives him a nod. Tim's eyes crinkle at the corners as he smiles back at her, the playful banter a familiar dance they've shared for months. "Alright, I'll take the raincheck," he says, his voice teasing. "But don't think this means I'm letting you off the hook."Lauren laughs, the tension in the air dissipating slightly. "I'll save you some fortune cookies," she promises before turning to leave. As she walks away, she feels his eyes on her back, and she can't ignore the warmth that spreads through her. She knows that their friendship is evolving, that there's something more simmering beneath the surface, but she's not quite ready to confront it. Not yet.
