Chapter 23 - I'm Sorry

You looked at Tony as you finished a sketch of nothing but a middle finger. Tony grabbed it from you and examined it, "I didn't know you were such an artist." He looked back and smiled at you while rolling it up. 

"I am a jack of all trades." You returned his smile and he came by your side. "Are you sure we're making the right choice?" Tony's face sank as he set the rolled up design down and ran his hand through his hair, clearly nervous. "I don't think we have much of one." 

You began to tinker with the laser in front of you. You are only missing the power supply to have had it operating and standing a chance to leave. The power would take at least 24 hours to construct and although you wish you could try you know that there is no way to manipulate it. 

"Hey by the way, I forgot to ask you." He came back to your side and watched you, "Can I take you out on a date." 

"What?" You stopped and looked up at Tony. "Yeah, I was thinking I could get us a private tour of the California Science Center." 

"Oh really? Not a fancy dinner or a night club?" 

He put his hand on the back of your head, "You deserve so much more than that." He pulled you in and your foreheads were touching. 

"Damn right I do." You opened your eyes and locked with his. You caught his glance look down at your lips and back up. He slowly leaned in and you followed. Your lips first lightly touched and you felt the stubble from the two days of facial hair growth from your time in captivity but lightly touching wasn't enough. It was electric and now that you started you're not sure you could stop. His lips synced with yours and when your tongues became tangled his hand gripped tighter on your hair. You've never felt this before, it was so different, to addicting. Knowing you couldn't be the first to pull away you continued until the door swung open. 

"ENOUGH!" Rumlow's voice rang out throughout the room. You and Tony stopped kissing and slowly pulled away from each other but still locked eyes. You could tell that he felt the same way and you both also realized that this moment that you both shared would be the last together. 

Rumlow approached, "The design.." He looked at you and you hesitated, "NOW!" He screamed. 

You turned around and grabbed the folded up design and made eye contact again with Tony. As you slowly began to hand it to Rumlow you were shaking. Once you handed the design you stepped back toward Tony and he gently touched his hands with yours. Rumlow opened the design and again gave the same laugh as before. He held up his gun and put his finger on the trigger, "Enough." It was slow motion watching his finger slowly pull back but right before it click an explosion rang out behind the door. 

"WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT!" Rumlow put the gun down and while his back turn to the door Tony without hesitation ran toward him and kneed him in the stomach. Rumlow tried to collect himself but Tony elbowed him in the face. While blood streamed down Rumlow's face Tony pushed him against the concrete wall and it caused his hand to release on the gun. He kicked it towards you and you grabbed it, aiming it at Rumlow.

"Don't waste time, go!" Tony shouted at you while Rumlow laid unconscious on the ground and that's when you noticed the arc reactor was no longer in his chest. 

You looked at the table and the laser deployed using the arc reactor, that was now melted too it, as the power source.  You looked back at Tony. "Tony you need to leave! We have to get you to your lab." You pointed to his chest. "You wont make it without it."

He smiled, "I am your Ho Yinsen." He fell to the floor. "You're doing to do great things Y/N." 

You knelt by him, "I am going to get you out of here." You grabbed the laser and handed Tony the gun. "Promise me!" You touched his face. "Promise me you'll hang on." 

He touched your hand on his face and looked at you. "I can't." A tear filled your eyes. "TONY YOU OWE ME A DATE!" You couldn't help but yell at him. "YOU PROMISED AND I'LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU OTHERWISE!" 

He just nodded and you began to hear other footsteps. "I'm going to get help."  You kissed Tony on the head and slowly peaked your head out the door. "You couldn't see anyone and began to continue forward until you saw the metal staircase and the first guy was stationed at the corner. You knew you had to be strategic as to not damage the staircase as it appeared to be the only way out. 

You noticed stationed right behind him was a mirror. You looked up and thanked the Gods for the perfect placement and pressed the button. Unlike the door, the mirror shattered but the laser reflected and hit the man. Leaving the staircase intact.  His fall from the staircase did cause alarm for the other two men and they began running down. You waited at the very bottom, your back against the brick as each one came down you shot them with the laser. You began to step over them and made your way up to the staircase. 

As you made your way to the top of the stairs you found another metal door but held off when you heard fighting on the other side. It wasn't people bickering it was punches and gun shots. You slowly went to peak in the window but as you looked in you were met with a barrel of a gun. You quickly went back behind the brick and the door blew off falling off the hinges. 

You quickly went to the now empty door frame with your laser held up and your finger on the trigger. "Put that damn thing down." You slowly lowered it at Fury's voice. 

"So much for the rescue mission." You looked behind him and there was Happy and Spiderman. You couldn't help it a tear form in your eye and you leaned in to hug Fury. He let you for a only a few seconds before pushing you away. "Tony is.." 

You couldn't finish your sentence as you felt a similar hot sting but this time it was through your chest. It wasn't just bile in your throat but metallic blood that you began spitting out. Your vision went between fuzzy to tunnel vision as you gasped on the fluid leaving your body. Your legs went out and Happy caught you. "Hang in there." You heard him speak while another gun shot sounded around you and a body clasped to the ground. You couldn't turn your head to see who it was as you no longer were able to move. Including your chest that wouldn't raise with any attempted breathe. Your eyes shut accepting your fate.

Spiderman came over to your body and took it from Happy. "I am going to the hospital!" 

He swung out with you in his arms as Happy and Fury continued forward. Happy proceeded down the steps as Fury kicked Rumlow's body on the ground and spit on it. 

"I found him!" Happy shouted up the stairs and Fury proceeded down. When Fury made it downstairs he saw Tony who was on the brink of death grabbing Happy's shirt, "Who's blood is that Happy?" Happy remained quiet. Tony took his hands away and looked at the blood that transferred from Happy's shirt to his hand. His face spoke the 1,000 words he was unable to say. 

"I'm sorry." Was all that Happy had the courage to say.
