Unknown Forest Territory – Midnight

The trees were black with rain.

Y/N stood alone in the clearing, breath fogging in the cold. Her gauntlet was dark. Her reactor pulsed weakly under her armor, dim and fading.

She was exhausted.

Not from battle.

From everything.

She had crossed oceans. Torn down walls. Broken her family apart and set fire to the system that raised her.

And somehow... it still wasn't enough.

The last mission had gone sideways.

Not because they failed — but because someone died.

A SHIELD agent. Young. A rookie.

Not part of any black-ops program. Not a war criminal. Just a soldier doing what they were told.

And Y/N hadn't seen them until it was too late.

She'd blasted a security tower with an energy pulse meant to collapse infrastructure.

The tower had someone inside.

She hadn't known.

But it didn't matter.

The girl's name was Ava.

Twenty-four years old.

And now she was gone.

Y/N fell to her knees in the mud, the rain soaking through her suit, her hands shaking violently.

She screamed.

Not words.

Just grief.

It echoed through the trees like a warning.

Elsewhere – 0100 Hours

Loki found her by the edge of a cliff, hours later. He didn't speak. Didn't ask where she'd gone.

He simply stood behind her, silent as the dark.

"I killed her," Y/N said.

His eyes narrowed. "Who?"

"She was in the tower. I didn't know. She wasn't even a target."

"It was war—"

"No," she snapped. "It was me."

Loki's jaw tightened.

"You did what was necessary."

"No. I did what I wanted. And I didn't think."

He stepped closer.

"You've spared more than you've hurt."

"That doesn't bring her back."

She turned around, rain running down her face, mixing with tears.

"I didn't come out here to mourn," she said. "I came to see if I felt anything at all."

He waited.

"And I do," she whispered.

"But it's not enough."

Avengers Compound – 0300 Hours

The mission report came through with one word bolded in red:

CASUALTY.

Steve clenched his fists.

Bruce turned away.

Natasha didn't blink.

Tony read it in silence.

"Ava Beckett," he murmured.

"New recruit," Hill said. "Not even field-rated. Just posted for base surveillance."

Tony closed the file.

"She didn't deserve it."

"No one does," Steve said. "But this changes things."

"No," Tony whispered.

"This confirms them."

Forest Shelter – 0430 Hours

Loki lit a fire in the stone hearth. Y/N sat in silence, cloak around her shoulders, wet hair still clinging to her cheeks.

He poured her a drink — not wine, not mead. Something stronger. Mortal. Bitter.

She took it.

Sipped.

Didn't flinch.

"Do you want to stop?" he asked.

"No," she said.

"But I can't do this like before."

He nodded.

"Then we change the rules."

She looked at him now, eyes rimmed in darkness.

"You said once that chaos loves me."

"It does."

"I think it hates me now."

Loki knelt beside her.

"No," he whispered. "Chaos chose you. And it always burns the ones who carry it first."

Avengers HQ – Situation Room – 0700 Hours

The mood was different now.

No debate. No tension.

Just purpose.

"We find her," Steve said. "And we end it."

"She won't surrender," Bruce said.

"She won't get the chance," Hill replied.

Tony sat still.

Saying nothing.

Then:

"Let me talk to her."

"Are you serious?" Natasha asked.

"She killed someone, Tony."

"I know."

"And you still want to talk?"

"Yes," he said.

"Because if I don't, the next death will be hers."

Remote Forest – 0830 Hours

The call came through a secure frequency.

Y/N didn't answer at first.

Not until the fifth ping.

Then she tapped the side of her comm and whispered:

"Go ahead."

Tony's voice came through, raw.

"It's me."

"I know."

There was silence.

Then:

"You're in pain."

She didn't respond.

"I read the report."

"I didn't ask you to."

"You didn't have to."

More silence.

Then:

"Meet me."

"Why?"

"Because I'm not here to stop you," he said.

"I'm here to tell you the truth."

Neutral Location – Mountainside Watchtower – 1000 Hours

Y/N landed on the observation deck first, armor powered down.

Tony arrived minutes later, in civilian clothes. No armor. No backup.

Just two people. One father. One daughter.

Everything between them broken.

She didn't speak.

He did.

"When you were twelve, you tried to build your own arc core."

She blinked.

"Didn't have the tools. Burned a hole in the table. Nearly lit up the whole lab."

"I remember," she said softly.

"You asked me why I didn't yell."

She looked at him now.

"And you said it was because it was the first time you saw me try."

He nodded.

"I didn't know what I was building," she said.

"I didn't know what I was raising."

"I don't blame you."

"But I blame myself."

She looked away.

"I didn't mean to kill her."

"I know."

"But I did."

Tony stepped closer.

"You've made enemies. You've crossed lines. But this? This is the moment that decides everything."

She didn't respond.

"You can let this destroy you," he said.

"Or you can let it change you."

Her voice cracked.

"I don't know how."

"You already did."

He pulled a chip from his pocket.

Laid it on the ledge.

"The UN has drafted a declaration," he said. "They want your tech. Your records. They want you tried in front of the world."

"And you?"

"I want my daughter back."

She looked down at the chip.

"Even after everything?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

He met her eyes.

"Because you're the only person who ever made me think we could be better than what we built."

She picked up the chip.

Stared at it.

Then closed her hand around it.

And turned away.

"I'm not done yet."

He nodded once.

"I didn't think you were."

Later – That Night

Y/N sat with Loki beneath the stars.

The fire between them was low, but warm.

She handed him the chip.

He turned it in his fingers.

"What is it?"

"Proof they're scared of me."

He smiled faintly. "They should be."

She leaned against his shoulder.

"I killed someone."

"I know."

"I can't undo it."

"No."

"But I can honor it."

He looked at her now — really looked.

And for the first time in days, she didn't look like a weapon.

She looked like a storm preparing to rest.

He kissed her forehead.

And whispered, "Then let's finish this."
