Epilogue
22:31, 25 January 2021I looked towards the door in front of me.
Everyone was meeting up in the main hall in about ten more minutes. The memory of the final trial still played in my head.
Junko getting executed. She was crushed to death with her blood splattering everywhere. She also left the button behind to get out of this building. And so, everyone agreed to meet up there soon.
The air purifier, just as Junko said, has shut down completely. It wasn't working anymore as soon as she died, so, we would be running out of air sometimes soon and so we had to leave almost instantly.
But, Makoto gave me time to check something. I just wanted to check on something for only a couple of minutes. To see what was inside this room.
I looked up at the doorway once again. I could see the sketch of Junko stuck to the door and it made me tense up with nervousness.
This was Mukuro's room.
I wanted to check inside for only a moment. I wanted to see if there was anything inside that could prove I was an Enoshima. Anything at all. I needed to know what was inside this room.
I took a deep breath in. I couldn't just stand here the entire time or I would be wasting everyone else's time. And especially since they are all probably waiting on me.
So, I put my hand to the doorknob. The cold brass hit my fingers and I turned the handle, causing the door to open up fully.
I looked to see what was inside. It looked like a normal dorm room. Everything inside of it was completely normal and something you would find in any other dorm room in this building.
I bit my lip softly as I entered the room and started looking around quickly. I looked around everywhere I could. That included, drawers, cabinets, under the bed, anywhere that I could easily access it.
I kept looking for quite a bit of time. I just wanted to find something. Some kind of clue that could give me the answer.
Was I really Junko and Mukuro's older sister?
I continued looking and looking. Aimlessly checking the closet and bathroom area too.
The final place I haven't checked was her desk in the back corner of the room. I walked towards it fast since I knew I was running out of time.
I opened up the first drawer I saw and found nothing. Next, nothing as well. And so, I turned to the last one near the ground. The last drawer that I haven't checked and needed to see if something was inside of it.
I didn't have much hope left inside my body that I would find something there. But I guess I shouldn't have let my hopes too far down as I opened it up and was greeted by an unusual sight.
Inside of the drawer, was a small picture. A picture that seemed to be abandoned with dust covering it and nothing else was inside of the drawer.
I looked at it with a furrowed brow as I reached my hand down into the drawer and took out the picture. Holding it in my hand and looking down at it.
I brushed off a little bit of the dust to see it clearly and my mouth opened in a small gap once it was revealed to me.
It was a picture of what must have been Junko and Mukuro. Both girls were wearing school uniforms with a bright smile across their faces.
Mukuro's short brown hair was reaching down her face and she only smiled softly at the camera. Junko, on the other hand, had her arm wrapped around Mukuro's shoulder and smiled brightly, her teeth showing and her other hand holding up a peace sign.
They just seemed like two regular girls when I saw it. But that was before I saw the third girl in the picture.
That girl was me.
She looked exactly like me. She looked a little older than the two girls but she still smiled brightly at the camera. She also wore a school uniform as well. Her platinum blonde hair going down her shoulders and her light blue eyes sparkling in the sunlight background of a classroom.
The picture made my face soften.
Looking down at it, it made me realize how normal the three of us looked. Like we actually loved each other and the world around us. Like we didn't give into despair and really lived a normal life.
How could I forget sisters like these...? They seemed to be sisters you would never forget. At all.
Looking down at the photo, it kind of made me sad that I couldn't remember anything. That I couldn't mourn over my two sister's deaths since I couldn't remember them at all.
I continued to look down at it in awe. I didn't want to look away. I didn't want to look away from the three normal sisters who now became one.
"Haiyū?" I heard my name from the doorway as I suddenly looked up from where I was standing.
I looked towards the doorway to see the familiar face of Makoto looking at me with a small smile.
"I figured you were still here," He continued as he entered the room and walked towards me. "Find anything interesting?"
"Well... I found a photo but that's it," I answered as I put the photo into my purse. I'll be keeping that for a while. "But now I know I really am an Enoshima."
"It must be hard figuring that out, right?" Makoto asked with a sad smile on his face. "I'm sorry..."
"Don't apologize. I'm honestly glad that I now know," I said with a small smile. "Anyways, I'm sure we were all just normal girls once. Girls wanting to make a difference in the world... I wonder what happened to us that broke us...."
"Well, maybe you'll figure that out later!" Makoto said. "Once we're out of here maybe we can see if we find anything that could help you remember."
I smiled softly at him. "Thank you but, I think it'd be best not remembering... Like what you said at the trial, I can't escape from the past but... maybe I should just focus on the future."
"Heh.... Alright then... How about we get going now? Everyone else is waiting," Makoto explained with a smile.
"Yeah. Let's get out of here."
***************
I stood in front of the iron door with everyone else. We were all standing at the foot of it, looking up at the door in nervousness.
"All right... I suppose we have to do this eventually," Kyoko said with a sigh.
We all nodded softly.
We were finally leaving this place. I couldn't believe it. After all this time we would make it out of this hell hole and into the real world.
But then, a sneeze suddenly came through the air. I directed my attention to who sneezed suddenly and saw nervous Toko with us once again.
"Huh? Uh... what the...? Weren't we just like, facing off against the mastermind?" She asked in confusion.
"Don't worry, that's over now," I said with a small smile.
"Yeah. We won actually," Makoto said with a bright smile.
"So... we can leave this nightmare?" Toko asked.
"We can... But, we don't know exactly what's outside of here. It can be exactly as Junko described, or nothing like it at all," I said as I oooked back up at the iron door.
Junko said the outside world was a terrible place just filled with murder and death now. But what if it wasn't? What if everything she said was a lie? Like the world was completely peaceful like we remembered?
"Well... look at it like this: there are more possibilities out there than there are here. Sure, there'll be despair, but hey... Chin up! Hope's waiting patiently, too! And if it's not, hell, we'll bring on our own," Makoto explained to us all.
"Not a bad way of putting it... Not a bad way of putting it at all," Kyoko said with a small smile. She then turned to face Makoto. "Thank you for showing us the way."
"Yeah, without you. I think we would've given into despair a long time ago," I said to Makoto as I could see him blush slightly at this.
"Mm-hmmmm! First thing I'm gonna do is find a donut shop and binge! After that, life can hit me with whatever it wants!" Aoi said with a bright smile.
I laughed softly at the girls behavior. "I didn't expect any less from you, Hina."
She just smiled softly at me in return.
"Let's go. We're not getting any younger," Kyoko said as she faced the iron door.
"Yeah... yeah, let's go," Makoto said with a large smile as he took out the button Junko dropped during the trial.
He opened it up and looked at all of us with a large smile. Before he looked back down at it and pressed it softly.
I could hear sirens go off around us. Alarms blaring as the door started to unlock and open slowly on its own.
"You ready Byakuya?" I asked the boy besides me.
"I suppose so... Are you prepared on what we may encounter out there?" Byakuya asked me in return.
"Well... even if we're not I'm sure we can do it!" I said with a bright smile as I turned towards the big door opening up slowly.
In that quick moment, everything that happened in this hell hole suddenly came back to me.
The despair I felt. The deaths that happened. The friends I made and lost on the way. All of it led up to this very moment. The moment where we would escape with each other.
"We'll do it Byakuya..."
I saw sunlight start to peer in through the door.
"Together."
