...Seven
20:00, 27 November 2015"Taylor?"
"Taylor?"
"Tay.."
"Miss.." A deep voice said.
I opened my eyes quickly, not recognizing this voice.
"Oh.. Im sorry." I apologized as soon as I saw that it was the train conductor. I must have fallen asleep.
He looked at me with a weird expression on his face and held his hand out for my ticket. I quickly got the piece of paper out of my pocket and let him put a stamp on it. I was sitting in a separate cabin without any other people. I needed some privacy and calmness.
The man gave me my ticket back and closed the door of the small cabin again. I saw how he walked away, his face bored and annoyed. I wiped the sleep out of my eyes and got my phone out of my pocket. "4:32pm, that means I'm almost there." I mumbled to myself.
I looked to the map on the wall which said all the train stations and saw that there was only one other stop until Yadeville. The train was already slowing down for the stop and I got my stuff together. I looked out of the window and saw that small drops of rain filled the glass. The train cracked loudly and came to a complete stop. A few people exited the train before it closed its rusty doors again and drove away with a loud honk on the horn.
I put my black coat on over my sweater and got ready to get out, since the next stop would be mine. I got up from the uncomfortable bench and stretched out my long limbs while yawning loudly.
"Someone is tired." A voice said. It was a female voice that I didn't know yet and so I turned around to see where it came from. A blonde girl was standing in the doorway of the small cabin I was sitting in. I think she was about the same age as me. Her hair was blonde and her eyes blue, like Taylor's. The difference between hers and Taylor's though, was that this girl's eyes, weren't shining. And well, I liked Taylor's eyes more.
'A normal human. Its a miracle.' I thought to myself.
"Yes, didn't get so much sleep." I said to the girl, who was smiling at me. She was pretty, she was. But not as pretty as Taylor. God, I miss her..
"Where are you getting out?" The girl asked. Her teeth were really white as she smiled at me. She got her black purse off of the ground and swung it over her shoulder. She was wearing a simple white shirt with a grey jacket over it.
"Yadeville." I answered. "You?" I asked curiously.
"Me too." She smiled. "Im Toni." She said then, sticking her hand out to shake mine, and so we did. "Toni Garrn."
"Karlie." I said. "Kloss." She held onto my hand for a bit too long in my opinion but well, I smiled at the girl, got my stuff of the ground and wanted to leave the cabin.
"What is a girl like you going to do in a small town like Yadeville?" Toni asked curiously, stepping out of my way and letting me through.
"Oh I.. I just like traveling." I lied. Walking towards the train doors.
"Oh. Cool." She replied, following me closely. The train made a loud cracking sound and started slowing down.
"And you?" I decided to ask. "You don't seem like a small village girl to me either."
"Oh I have a small vacation house there. You know, to get away from the city." She replied easily.
"Okay, nice." I said, closing the buttons of my coat. I felt her eyes staring me down.
"You can stay at mine if you want to." She said then, her voice seductive while she touched my arm softly.
"Oh..I..I don't kn.." I started stuttering, looking down at my hands and starting to blush
"Was just an invitation. You don't have to." She said, leaning against the wall smoothly and smirking at me.
"I.. I know.. I.."
Fuck.. Karlie, decide. Don't be a dumbass. You need a place to sleep anyway..
"I just thought you would need a place to sleep, since you're traveling and all." Toni said then, still eyeing me down.
"I.. I do yes." I stuttered.
At least she is human and she wont try to kill me..
"Well then, you're welcome." She said as the train came to a complete stop. "If you want to of course."
"Ill accept that invitation then." I said, smiling a small smile at her. She smiled back at me, her eyes seeming to be a bit lighter now, or maybe it was just the lights shining in her face.
"Follow me then." She said, taking my hand, hers were surprisingly cold. I wanted her to let my hand go, but I didn't want to be rude and so I just did nothing against it. We got out of the train and stepped right into the rainy weather. It was quite cold outside and I shivered immediately. It wasn't dark outside yet, but the sun wasn't providing much light either since the thick, grey, clouds were blocking the warm and light sunbeams.
"My car is parked close." Toni said, looking over her shoulder and giving me a smile.
"Okay." I replied uncertain.
She might not be a wolf, but what is she is some kind of kidnapper..
We reached a big parking lot and she let go of my hand finally to get her car keys out of her purse. A black pick up truck started beeping shortly when she pressed the button on her keys and we both made our way to the car.
"Why are you so nervous?" The girl asked as soon as we both sat down in the car. The question caught me off guard.
"I.. I normally don't just follow strangers and go to their house and stuff." I said, looking at her from the side as she starts the car.
"You're scared of me?" She laughed, backing up the car and driving away then.
"Yes.. well no.. I mean.. well.. ugh.." I stuttered. "I mean, I don't know you."
She laughed again and then said: "I don't know you either but you seemed like a nice girl." She took a sharp turn to the right suddenly, driving off the main road. "Plus you're really pretty"
"Why aren't we driving on the road anymore?" I asked, trying to ignore her compliments.
"Relax sweetie." She said then, putting her hand on my leg and giving it a little squeeze. I felt extremely uncomfortable. I mean this girl was pretty and all, and she seemed to be quite nice too. But I was just missing my Taylor and this was not her. Plus, something didn't feel right about this whole thing.
"Where is your house?" I asked, my voice nervous.
"Woods." She simply replied, smiling. Her hand was still resting on my leg and the other hand steering us through the misty forrest surrounding.
"Do you do this more often?" I asked, my curious self not able to not ask more things.
"What? Driving? Yeah." She laughed.
"No.. I uhhm mean.. taking girls to your place.." I said, my voice small.
"No.. oh well.. I might as well be honest with you." She said, smiling still. "Every once in a while."
Oh god.
"Uhmm, Toni.."
"Yeah?"
"I think I've given you the wrong signs or something.. I have a.. OH MY GOD, LOOK OUT!"
A deer jumped in front of the car and just stood there, looking into the lights. "Fuck!" Toni shouted, her hand leaving my leg and grabbing the steering wheel. She quickly steered the car to the left and the car started spinning on the muddy road.
"Oh my god!" I shouted again. I closed my eyes and felt the car hit something, presumably a tree. I could feel my body started shaking and sweating
'Not a wildening Karlie, not now.' I thought to myself.
I breathed in and out calmly a couple of times and opened my eyes after a while.
"A.. are you okay?" I asked the other girl, who was just staring in front of her with her eyes wide. I looked around us, seeing that the car had hit a tree and had come to a stop through that.
"Toni?" I said, shaking her shoulder. She looked at me then, moving her head slowly.
"That was so fucking scary." She said softly, all the confidence had left her body it seemed.
"I know." I said, still in shock too.
We sat in silence for a while then.
"Do you think you can back the car up and get it back on the road again?" I asked then.
"Well.. I can try." She said, turning the key in the ignition and starting the car back up. Well at least, that was the plan. The car didn't do a thing though except for letting out a loud roaring sound for a second, and then a bang.
"Well.. good try." I said drily.
"Shit.." She said, punching the steering wheel angrily.
"How far away is the house?" I asked, not wanting to walk but not wanting to stay here in this car either, in the middle of the woods. It was already completely dark outside now and you couldn't see a thing.
"Bout half an hour walking I think." Toni replied.
"Well then, lets walk." I said, opening the door and getting my stuff out of the car. "We will see what we can do with the car tomorrow, when its light."
"Okay." She said, clearly still in shock.
"Lets go. It will be okay." I said, giving her a small smile.
She smiled back at me, got her stuff and opens the car door too. We both got away from the vehicle and started walking back to the muddy road.
"Will we get there if we just follow this?" I asked the significantly shorter girl. But well, almost everyone is shorter than me. Im literally a giant. I pointed at the road ahead of us.
"Yeah." She said, looking at me from the side. "Im glad you came with me. Otherwise I would have had to walk home all alone." She smiles at me. Not a flirty smile this time, but a warm one.
"Well then I'm glad I'm here with you." I replied, smiling back at her, for real for the first time.
"Lets walk." She said then, taking my hand again. It still didn't feel comfortable, but again, I didn't want to be rude and so I let her hold it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"God, finally." I said. A small, wooden house appeared in the distance. "Please tell me thats it?"
"Yes it is." She said, a small smile on her face as we were both glad to see the house after a long and creepy walk in the dark woods. The house looked kind of creepy too though standing there in the darkness. There was a light burning at the front door, making it seem like there was someone home.
"Are there other people living there too?" I asked.
"Nope. I just always leave the outside light on at night. It has a timer."
"Why that?"
"Otherwise I cant see where to go when I arrive with my car."
"Aah, makes sense."
We finally reached the front door of the old looking building and she got her keys out once again. "Welcome." She said, opening the door for me.
"Thanks." I said, walking into the dark hallway uncertainly. It was creeping me out. Why do I always end up in places and situations like this.
I walked through the hallway and opened the door to presumably the living room. I reached for a light switch and found it. I clicked the light on and suddenly a very luxurious interior style appeared. Something I didn't expect to see in this old, wooden, house in the middle of the woods.
The floor was white, like bright white, like hurting your eyes white. And there was a black, square couch, standing in the middle of the room. In front of that, a glass fire place which looked super futuristic and cool. The walls were also white, the same kind of white the floor was.
In the left corner of the room, a fridge was placed. Only a fridge, no other kitchen stuff. Just a fridge. In the other corner, two chairs and a black chess table were placed.
"It looks so cool here." I said in amazement. Toni appeared behind me.
"Im glad you like it." She said, touching my hip softly as she past me and walked to the fireplace. I stepped away from her at her contact and put my bag onto the ground.
"Its cold here, let me warm it up a bit." She said, getting a match out of a drawer next to the fireplace and lighting the thing up without any trouble.
"I love the fireplace." I said. "So.. like... into the future.. ish.."
She giggled. "Thanks. Want something to drink? My father gave me this amazing wine. Would you like to try it with me?" She was already on her way to the fridge and waited for me to answer.
"Uhmm.. I.. no thanks.." I stuttered. "I don't drink."
"You don't drink? Like at all?" She asked, laughing at my reply.
"Well.. uhmm.. water."
"Water it is." She said, pouring two glasses of water now. "Sit down." She pointed at the couch while making her way to me with the drinks. I sat down on the leather couch and tried to get comfortable by taking my jacket off. The fireplace was already providing some warmth and I stuck my hands towards it out to warm them up.
Toni put the two glasses down on a glass table next to the couch and sat down beside me. Too close to me and so I tried moving a few centimeters until she spoke. "I wont bite you know?"
I couldn't help but laugh at the comment.
"What?" She asked, giggling too.
"Nothing.. sorry." I said, looking at the crackling fire.
A silence filled the room, the only sound the fire crackling in the silence. Toni then started talking about some random stuff and so we made conversation for a while. About school, work, friends, etcetera. She was easy to talk to. But that was mostly because she seemed to really like talking and talked a lot. A lot lot.
"I like you're eyes. They're special." She said then, out of nowhere. I swallowed hard, not wanting her to know anything about the weird stuff that had been happening the last month or so. I just wanted to have a normal evening for once and sleep in a safe place.
"T.. thanks." I mumbled, looking down at my hands who were snuggled inside the sleeves of my sweater.
"Why are you so nervous the whole time?" She said, smiling widely at me.
"I.. uhmm.. I don't know." I said, still looking down.
I then felt her cold hand on my arm. "Relax." She said, rubbing her hand up and down.
"Toni, I don't know why you invited me to your place.. but I uhmm.. I have a girlfriend." I think..
She removed her hand from my arm immediately.
"Oh." She said, looking down, her cheeks flustered.
"Sorry.. I wanted to tell you earlier, like in the car but.. then the deer.. sorry.." I rambled.
She looked up at me again. "Is she a wolf too?"
I couldn't believe what I had just heard.
She knows?
"What? Wolf? How do you.."
"Your eyes." She said.
"Oh." I looked down at my hands.
Fuck.
"Whats her name?" She asked, her face neutral, no emotions to be found.
"I don't know if I can.."
"Karlie, come on. Its your girlfriend, you might as well tell me about her."
"Taylor." I replied, in almost a whisper. Is she even my girlfriend? We never even talked about this. I do think im in love with her though. What if she doesnt feel the same? She must feel the same? Right?
"Oh, Taylor from the whites huh? You guys matches?" She asked, interupting my thoughts and smirking at me.
"Yeah, do you know her?" I asked, looking into the girl's blue eyes again, they seemed to be lighter than before, again. "Wait. You're a human right?"
Toni looked down. "Uhmm well.."
Oh god.
"Im a.. a classic wolf." She said then, her cheeks red.
"A what!?" I said in fear, knowing exactly what she meant already.
Classic werewolfs, the kind of wolfs that kill their friends and family and wont even know they did it.
I almost dropped the glass of water that I was holding.
Fuck, its full moon tonight.
"Its alright. You're a wolf. I don't attack other wolfs when I shift. Not the ones I like anyway.. So its fine." She said, reaching out for my hand but I quickly pull it away and got my phone out of my pocket. "Classic wolfs dont attack wolfs they like."
"Im not a real wolf yet." I said then, trying to stay calm but panicking majorly inside my head. I looked at the time on my phone. 11.47pm.
"Oh my god. I thought.." She mumbled. "I thought you were a wolf, I saw your eyes and I thought you were a wolf. But then you're.." She stopped talking and her eyes became wider. "You're that human born they talk about.."
Fuck.
"Who talk about?" I asked quickly.
"My pack.."
"You're.. one of the.. grey's?" I asked, getting up from the couch and backing away from her.
Im so fucked.
"Oh my god, Karlie. Im so sorry.." She said then, burring her face in her hands.
"When are you shifting?" I asked, grabbing my stuff already.
"Twelve." She said, her voice sad and defeated. "You have to go. Go as far as you can."
I looked at my phone again and just stood there in shock, staring at the blonde girl on the couch. 11:51pm.
"Karlie, I didn't know my family was hunting for you and that you weren't a wolf yet. If I knew, I wouldn't have brought you here. Then I would've told you to travel to another town or whatever." She said, looking at me, fear in her eyes. "Im not a bad person."
She looked down and then said: "My family lives here too, its not safe to even be here. They will kill you if they find out. And Ill kill you in like 10 minutes if I find you." Her eyes had started watering now.
I couldn't move and stood there like a statue.
"I don't want to hurt you. I just thought you were nice and pretty, and most of all, that you were a wolf. When a classic werewolf, likes a wolf. They wouldn't attack them. I thought we could have a nice evening together." She said. Im still standing still, looking at her in shock. "But you're a human."
Shit.
"I don't want to hurt you Karlie. Go!" She said loudly then. "I will kill you and I wont even know it. You're a nice person. Go, now!"
I give the blonde girl one more look. "Sorry." She whispered her eyes already changing color now and turning red a bit.
I quickly turned around, grabbed my bag and hurried out of the front door. I started running at full speed, trying to get as far away from her as I could. I looked at the time again, while running. 11:58pm.
She is going to be so much faster than me.
I ran and ran further into the woods, on the path we just walked on, all the way to the house. I then heard a loud grown fill the air. Panic started filling my body and I started running even faster than I already did.
Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck
I ran and ran, sometimes almost slipping and falling because of the muddy ground underneath my feet. But I didn't care. I reached the black pick up truck that was still parked against the tree and ran past it quickly. Then I heard loud and fast footsteps behind me.
No.
I looked over my shoulder while still running and saw a huge dark grey creature running behind me. Its eyes were bright red and its mouth hanging half open as if already knowing it was going to eat me up.
"Toni, its me!" Shouted while still running and trying to keep my speed.
The creature growled loudly and picked up its pace as it was now coming even closer. I looked forward again and could already see the lights of the main road in the distance. Then I saw something running towards me from that side too.
Great. Another scary creature chasing me.
This second creature had bright white colored fur though and light blue eyes. Eyes I already recognized from a far distance.
"Taylor?!" I shouted. The white wolf let out a growl while still running in my direction. I looked over my shoulder and saw that the dark grey creature was slowing its speed, waiting for Taylor to come to her.
"Look out! Please look out!" I shouted at Taylor who passed me now, shooting me a look with her light blue eyes.
I kept on running until I heard one of the animals let out a loud cry. I stopped and quickly turned around to look at them. It was obviously Taylor who had let out the cry, since she now had a big wound on her side.
"Taylor!" I screamed, fear overtaking me again as I tears started streaming down my face. The two wolfs were fighting harshly, biting and scratching each other in the process. Taylor gave the grey wolf a hard punch with her paw, but then received another scratch with nails that looked like knifes.
I have to help her..
Another loud cry filled the air and it was Taylor again. She was now bleeding a lot from the wound on her side and also had a big wound on her paw. She looked at me with her blue eyes and I knew that she wanted me to run and get myself to safety. But I had to help her in some kind of way. She received another scratch, this time on her back and fell onto the ground.
"NO!" I shouted. The grey wolf looked at me then with those red eyes and started running towards me.
"OH COME ON THEN!" I shouted at the creature. I started sweating and shaking but ran towards the animal on full speed. I remember the training sessions that Taylor and I had had in the forest close to her cabin. But this time, it eas for real.
Okay so what am I doing?
I felt my vision become blurry for a bit and then the air around me. became bright white for a second. I heard a loud growl. I sharp pain went through all of my body and I heard an even louder growl then. I realized was the one who was growling so loud. Suddenly I was running on four paws and had dirtyblonde, furry hair instead of normal human skin. I became a wolf.
I shifted, but how?
The other wolf was looking at me in a confused expression. I took the chance and looked right into her scary, red eyes and bit her neck harshly. She let out a loud cry and fell to the ground. I growled again and punched the creature's side. She let out a cry again, but didn't fight back. I looked at her eyes for a second then, they weren't red anymore but blue.
Oh god..
She said classic wolfs, would never attack wolfs they like.. and im a wolf now..
"Im sorry." I wanted to say to her. But all that came out, where a few grumble and growling sounds.
"Run." I heard her growl then.
I ran over to Taylor, who was still laying on the ground but not in her wolf form anymore. She was human again, probably too hurt and weak to remain her wolf self. I nudged her with my head and wanted her to move over. She opened her beautiful blue eyes and smiled a bit when she saw me.
"Hello beautiful." She whispered softly.
"Hi." I growled softly to her and nudged my head against her body again. I laid down next to her and let her climb on my back. When she was sitting there, holding on to my neck tightly, I stood up and ran as fast as I could.
"Car?" I wanted to ask, but I realized soon that she probably couldn't understand me, since only a weird, animal like, sound escaped my mouth.
"My car is parked to the left there." She said though, as if reading my mind. Her voice was weak and I knew she was in a lot of pain.
I looked behind us and the grey wolf was still laying there in the ground.
'Poor Toni' I thought. But those thoughts soon escaped my mind when I heard Taylor moan in pain.
'Hold on, were almost there.' I thought, hoping she could read my mind.
I could see a car appearing in the distance and then suddenly, felt myself shift again. I started shaking and sweating again and I felt a horrible pain in my legs and arms. Taylor dropped herself from my back quickly, before I let out one last growl and fell onto the ground. I had never felt as weak as I did now.
"You have to get into the car." I heard her say then, tugging my arm. "Come on Karlie, you're strong. You can do this. You have to drive and get us out of here." Her voice was weak and I could hear that she was in so much pain, more pain than me. And so I got up from the ground, my limbs feeling as if they were all broken in 100 different places. Maybe they were, who knows.
I opened the car door and let her climb in, she pressed her hand tightly to her side and let out a long breath when she sat down. I walked to the other side of the car and heard fast footsteps behind me again. It was Toni, in her scary wolf form. I rushed over to the drivers side as fast as my weird feeling legs let me, got in and started the car. The grey creature had almost reached the car now and so I sped away into the dark night.
I looked in the rearview mirror then, and saw the grey wolf standing there. Looking at us with its red eyes. I shot a look over at Taylor, who was breathing heavily. "You're bleeding through your shirt." I said, still out of breath. A huge red spot on her white shirt was only becoming bigger and bigger. She also had a big cut on her forearm.
"Just watch the road please." She replied, gritting her teeth to obviously try to feel less pain.
"Im driving you to the nearest hospital." I said. My arms and legs were hurting so much, that I didn't even know if I could drive any further.
"Hi nurse, I would like you to check out these wolf scratches." She replied drily.
"Okay, you have a point." I said, smiling a small smile at the beautiful girl sitting beside me. She smiled back a bit but then her pain took over and she let out a loud cry.
"It hurts so much." She said, her voice weak. I would say I missed her suiting voice, but that seemed weird in a situation like this, and so I said: "Lets drive back to Coletown."
"Coletown?" Taylor asked, not able to make long sentences anymore.
"Selena can help us. Im sure of that." I explained.
"Coletown is still too close to the area of the grey's." She breathed.
"Have another plan then?" I asked the blonde, who was cringing in pain. Coletown was about a two hour drive if I drove fast.
She stayed silent for a while then. I had so many questions for the blonde. 'How did you find me? How did I change into a wolf already when thats not supposed to happen for another month still? Why don't I know a thing about you? Where is your family?' Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. And oh, the most important one ofcourse: 'Are you as in love with me as I am with you?' But I figured her health was the most important thing now and so I stayed quiet and let her think.
"No."
"Well then, Coletown it is." I said, stepping on the gas and speeding off towards the small town.
