Fighting for Helms Deep

00:46, 4 March 2015

I stood next to Legolas and Gimli on a wall that overlooked miles and miles of grasslands. Sarumon's army would be marching this way and would be arriving very shortly.

I heard a rumble of thunder overhead and cursed under my breath in Elvish. Of course it would be raining, which would make this whole battle even harder to fight.

Gimli grumbled as he tried to jump up to see over the wall. I smiled and tried not to laugh at his futile attempts. "You might not want to see this Gimli." I told the Dwarf. He didn't pay attention and kept trying to see.

Looking back in front of me, I felt a surge of adrenaline rush through my veins as I saw the first lines of the Urak-Hai appear on the horizon. They were marching quite quickly and soon, thousands of them were in sight.

They had thick armor, but I easily found some weak spots. They also had huge, pointy spears that looked very dangerous, but also hard to move.

"Would you like me to describe it for you, or would you like me to get you a box?" I heard Legolas ask Gimli, who was still jumping in the air. At this point, I laughed out loud. Gimli, however, was not amused. He muttered profanities at "tall Elves" under his breath.

I looked around me. Halidir's Elves were on both sides of me, as well as the other archers. There were men in armor below us and on the very ends of the wall we were on. The other Elves looked relaxed and determined. I tried to calm myself too.

Soon enough, the Urak-Hai had stopped right below us and their leader gave a huge roar. I flinched slightly, not wanting to act scared.

"Show no mercy!" Aragorn shouted at the archers. "For you will receive none!" I took a deep breath. I was ready any moment now. We drew our bows, Gimli his axe, and took aim. The Urak-Hai below us banged their weapons together, making an awful noise that I was sure could be heard in the caves.

All of a sudden, a single arrow flew from the wall and hit a Urak-Hai in the neck, causing it to fall over, dead.

The noise stopped as our enemy watched it happen. I looked to my left and saw an old man with grey hair looking surprised. I sighed, worried.

"Hold!" Aragorn yelled at us again. I turned my attention back to the battlefield. The Urak-Hai had started growling and roaring again, not a comforting sound. I heard Aragorn draw his sword and waited for his command.

"Fire!" I shot my arrow milliseconds after he told us to. It hit a Urak-Hai and killed it instantly, causing me to smile. Call me morbid.

I didn't hesitate to fire more and more arrows, killing everything I saw. The Urak began running right up to the wall and they lent ladders up against it. I gulped.

Than, putting my bow away and pulling out my swords, I ran along the wall to the nearest ladder, and pushed it away. A few Urak were on that ladder, and they fell to the ground.

But more were coming, too many. I clenched my teeth at a Urak-Hai running right towards me. With a yell, I swung one of my swords and decapitated it with one blow.

Spinning, I stabbed another in the gut and slit his throat. From behind me, I heard Legolas and Gimli shouting out numbers to each other. Legolas's numbers were much higher than Gimli's, so I assumed that they were having some sort of contest.

Legolas, I have five already!" The Dwarf shouted. "I'm on seventeen!" Was the reply. I smiled. "Eighteen!" I shouted at both of them, joining in. Gimli growled at me and Legolas just raised his eyebrows in surprise. I raised mine back at him.

Turning away, I worked my arms, killing more and more of our enemy. I also saw Elves and Men falling off the wall, with arrows stuck in their chests and heads. It wasn't pleasant, but it was a good thing I was used to this kind of stuff.

Caught up in the midst of my fighting, I had moved farther down the wall, besides the huge gate keeping the Urak-Hai out of Helms Deep. I noticed a group of Urak marching behind a much larger one. They had shields in front of them, protecting them.

The one in front was carrying something. I couldn't tell what it was, as I kept having to kill Urak-Hai running towards me.

My blood ran cold as I realized. It was an explosive. At that exact moment, I heard Aragorn shout to Legolas. "Kill him Legolas, stop him!" Legolas shot arrow after arrow at the one carrying the bomb, and every one of them hit him, but didn't stop him.

The Urak-Hai stumbled to the gate, still holding the bomb. I than heard Legolas yell my name. "RYANNE!"

I realized that I was ten feet from the gate, and that bomb would go off in seconds. I turned and started sprinting away, not knowing where I was going, just needing to get away, fast.

I jumped for a lowered part of the wall, when, less than a second later, the bomb exploded. By now, I was twenty or so feet away, but it still got to me. It shot me high into the air, along with parts of stone and steel.

I landed hard on top of the wall, close to where I had started. Legolas ran over to me an knelt down besides me. "Ryanne, are you okay?" He brushed hair out of my face, only to see that it was covered in dirt, blood and scratches.

I nodded weakly, just having the wind knocked out of me. He helped me stand up and I grabbed my two swords from the ground.I was about to say something to Legolas, but he had already moved away from me.

He picked up a shield from a dead body and threw it down the stairs. Drawing his bow, he jumped on to it, sliding down the stairs, firing arrows at Urak-Hai as he went. Once he reached the bottom, he started fighting just like before.

I rolled my eyes and ran after him.

Gimli was still brandishing his axe with fury and decapitating everything he saw and didn't like. Which was most things. I jumped down next to him, landing in a crouch. He seemed surprised but not surprised at he same time, as he watched me do so.

I than felt a sudden force of weight on my back, knocking me to the ground. Recovering quickly, I flipped over on my back and punched the Urak-Hai who had landed on me in the face.

He let out a nasty noise and grabbed for my throat. But before he could choke me, I punched him again in the temple. Usually, this would have knocked a man out, but this wasn't a human.

My legs thrashed, trying to kick him, but I hit nothing. Grunting, I tried to push him off of me, but he punched me back in the face. His hit wasn't as hard as I expected. Or maybe I was just used to worse.

Than, surprisingly, he fell limp, blood dripping from his head. In seconds, I saw the arrow than had been shot at him. I immediately recognized it, and narrowed my eyes.

I reached up and yanked it out of the Urak-Hai's head. I than pushed him off of me, stood up and turned to stab it into another's stomach, making it fall over dead.

Turning back around, I tossed Legolas his arrow back. He smiled at me and nocked it back into his bow, he fired it and it killed two Urak-Hai at the same time. I was going to have to learn that one.

Aragorn, who had seen the whole thing, shook his head at us. "You two..." He muttered.

I continued to swing my swords, occasionally having to use my throwing knives. Fighting besides my friends felt better than I had thought it would. I had extreme hope and faith in us and knew what to do to win this battle.

Aragorn shouted to us above all the fighting. "Fall back! Fall back to the keep!" That choice was probably really smart, so I started making my way over to the gate.

I caught sight of Haldir, who nodded to me, moving towards the keep as well. A Urak-Hai started towards Haldir, but behind him, out of his sight.

I wasn't afraid for Haldir, I knew he would turn and kill it. But when he didn't, I tried to call out to him.

"HAL-" My shout was cut short as the Urak stabbed him in the back.

It turned into a blood-curdling scream as I saw Haldir fall to his knees, blood dripping from his back. My scream had alerted the others around me, and they also saw what was happening.

Running fast, I shot towards Haldir. I got to him in time to catch his falling form from hitting the ground. "No, no no no!" I pulled his head up to look at me.

"Haldir, get up!" I shouted at him, knowing that he wouldn't be able to. "Haldir..." My voice cracked, having to watch my friend die.

He touched my hand, than he fell limp on my leg. I gently set him down, with his sword and his helmet.

I looked up at the Urak who had killed him. He was still there, smiling as much of a smile that he could manage. He wanted this to be painful. Well I would make it more painful for him.

I picked up my two swords and stood up, facing him. "You killed him." I stated calmly. " I will kill you."He growled at me, challenging me.

I stepped over Haldir's body and got ready to kill him in a slow, painful way.

By now, I'm sure that Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli had noticed us, but I pushed that out of my mind, bracing myself for this. The Urak was probably a foot taller than me and twice as thick. I tried to calm myself as he stepped in front of me.

Without warning, I swung my first sword, distracting him. He instantly blocked that and at the same time, I spun and sent my second one towards his neck. He leant back just in time, barely receiving a scrape.

His huge sword came towards me quicker than I anticipated, and I ducked and drew one of my knives. Quick as I could, I threw it, and it buried itself into his side.

The Urak-Hai roared with pain, and I straightened myself, knowing it wasn't over. He pulled the knife out, throwing it to the ground. He swung his sword at me again, and this time I had to block it with both of mine.

Thinking quickly, I pulled a sword out from under his and threw it towards him.

I had never thrown one of my swords before, but I had thrown enough knives to know what I was doing. It was a little different, with the unbalanced weight, but I managed.

This time, it hit him right in the chest. He stopped in his tracks.

Blood trickled down him, and he fell forwards. I moved out of the way, grabbing my sword just in time. Leaning down for my knife, I tucked it back in its place.

I looked up and saw Legolas and the others about thirty feet away. Smiling, I noticed that Aragorn was physically holding Legolas back so he wouldn't run up to me.

I jogged back to them and Aragorn pushed me in the direction of the Keep.

As we entered the main room, we saw Théoden and some of his men standing in front of the huge double doors that opened up to the outside where the fighting was still raging on.

The doors shook as an opposing force tried to break them down. I caught my breath. They were going to break in.
