08:15, 10 June 2017—Mom, drive faster! —Evelyn shouted at her mom, sitting next to me on the back seat of their car.
—Evelyn, I can't drive faster if you want to arrive safe to the airport! —she replied, concentrating her sight on the road—. You should have seated in the copilot seat Miss Demi... She will bring you crazy back there! —she joked.
I smiled nervously and I took my phone dealing Wilmer's number for the tenth time.
—Shit! —I shouted, not getting a reply—.Sorry! —I said.
—Nah! Feel free to swear! The situation is worth the cursing! —Evelyn's mom replied, making the little ones giggle.
My phone started to buzz on my hands and I jumped in my seat, until I saw Marissa and Mathew talking in our group chat.
—Is it Mr. Valderrama? —Allyson asked excitedly.
—No —I replied in a sigh.
Matt💃: Deem, what time do you finish at school today? Pool evening time?? 🏊😃 btw, are you already feeling better from your stomach ache?
Ma👯: Yup, we are free from now on so we can wait you there! ☀👌
Me: I can't talk now
Ma👯: Oh! Forgot about your little ones' festival! Sorry!
Me: Wilmer left the school leaving me a letter so I could keep my job
Me: he is flying back to Venezuela
Me: my students' parents are driving me to see if we can stop him yet
Matt💃: ARE YOU FUCKIN KIDDING US DEMETRIA ¿¿
Ma👯: what???????
Me: No, he left
Matt💃: omg how are you feeling D?
Ma👯: what of a stupid question is that Matt!?
Ma👯: he better be there yet
Ma👯: I swear I'm going to kill him🔪
Matt💃: Ma, get ready, we are driving there too! Pick you up in 10! Hurry up!
I locked my phone and I kept looking from the window, hoping to find him there.
Some minutes later, we all got to the airport and my students and I rushed inside. I ran to the customer service and I tried to talk to the worker, who honestly, was really busy.
—Excuse me! —I told her worried—. Could you tell me if there has been any departing to Caracas this morning?
The woman didn't even look at us and kept typing on her computer.
—Sorry! She's talking to you! —Jake told her, angrily.
She turned over and stared at us this time.
—I know your mom has talked to me, but looks like she doesn't have any respect for all the people she has before her in the line! —the woman told him, pointing at all the people that were also waiting to talk to her.
I looked behind me and saw a long queue that we had jumped.
—She is not my mom, she's my... —Jake tried to explain her, but I cut him off.
—Don't worry Jake —I intervened—. I'm sorry, I'm so anxious I haven't seen all these people, but please, it's an emergency!
—I'm as sorry as you, but those people have an emergency too, that's why they are here —she said still looking at her computer's screen—. Next one, please!
I started to have a stifling sensation and I felt the nausea I had these past weeks come back. I walked off the line and I supported myself on the wall of the customer service's room. I closed my eyes for some seconds until I started to feel less dizzied.
—We all parked already! —some parents walked to us—. Miss Demi, are you okay?
—Yeah, yeah! Don't worry —I said, taking my right hand off my stomach.
At the same moment, Marissa and Mathew got inside the airport, running nonstop and directly to us.
—Dem!!!!!! —they shouted and leaned on me—. Haven't you guys found him yet?
—I tried to talk to the unpleasant costumer service's woman, but she won't tell me if there has been any departing to Caracas today if I don't wait in that long queue! And as you can imagine, I ain't have time for that! —I complained.
—Oh my God! There must be another way to know it! —Matt replied.
—But I can't ask in any flying company, because I don't know which one he could have used! —I said.
—Hi! We are Allyson, Evelyn and Violet! Miss Demi's and Mr. Wilmer's best students! Are you her best friends? Nice to meet you! —Allyson asked them.
Marissa and Mathew laughed and nodded.
—Yes, we are! Nice to meet you too! —Mat added.
—Girls, don't disturb them! —Violet's mom said.
Suddenly, a woman who was on the line left it and came to us.
—Excuse me! You've been asking for the schedule of the planes flying to Venezuela today, right? —she asked to me.
I nodded curiously and I listened to her intrigued.
—Well, there was a plane supposed to take off this morning at 11pm, but there were some problems and the flight was cancelled —she explained—. So the flight was delayed three hours and it is set to take off at 2pm!
—Oh my God! —I shouted in joy—. Thank you so much! —my eyes started to water.
The woman smiled and walked off.
—Guys! Look at the departing screen! —Aaron, Wilmer's student shook us out of our thoughts—. It's 1:30pm! The passengers are already boarding! We need to hurry!!
I looked at my wristwatch and my eyes almost popped out of my head. We just had 30 minutes to stop him! Time to run!
—We've got thirty minutes!! Let's go! —I yelled and I started to run to the boarding gate with everyone running behind me.
We got to the gate and there was another long queue for people to get on the plane. Two policemen were checking out the passenger's passports and passages.
I stopped running for some seconds to stare at all the people standing in that line. No one seemed to be Wilmer.
Children, their parents and Marissa and Wilmer were looking for Wilmer as well: in the shops behind the line, the cafeteria, the benches...
I had just had an awful experience with the customer service's woman, but I couldn't let that stop me from asking to the policemen too.
—Excuse me! Could you please tell me if Mr. Wilmer Eduardo Valderrama has already boarded the plane? —I asked hysterically—. He is a dark skinned man in his 30s... He is probably 1, 70 meters tall and he has brown eyes and brown short hair...
When I finished explaining I heard some children shouting and I turned over to see Wilmer getting out of the men's toilet in front of the line.
—WILMER! —I ran to him weeping.
—Guys!? —he got petrified seeing everyone circling him—. What are you doing here?
At that moment, I made way between all of them circling him and I jumped on him, crying on his shoulder.
Wilmer enclosed me with his arms and kissed me on my head, trying to calm me down.
—It's okay baby —he whispered on my ear.
—Don't say that! Nothing will be okay if you leave! —I screamed between sobs—. Where do you think you are going Wilmer!?
—You can't leave Mr. Valderrama! —Evelyn shouted, coming to us and I saw how her mom stopped her grabbing her from her T-shirt.
—You are not going anywhere missy; this is something they have to fix on their own! —she told her and all of them stayed in the circle staring at us and hearing what we said, which I didn't really mind at that moment.
—Demi, I explained it to you in the letter —he told me sweetly—. I can't let you lose your job and I can get a vacant in my old school... I promise you I'll come back the sooner I can.
—But I don't mind about your old school and I don't mind about my job when it comes to you Wilmer! —I shouted again—. You can't just get into my life, make me fall in love with you and now disappear like nothing happened!
—Demi, I'm telling you that won't happen! I will come back for you! —he replied seriously.
—But don't you understand!? I don't want you to come back! I want you to stay! —I complained.
—We will keep the contact Demi! I promise!
"The Caracas bound flight is departing in 15 minutes! Last minutes to board" we heard from the speaker of the airport.
—I have to leave now Demi —he said sadly, pecking my lips and releasing my hands—. I'll meet you really soon.
Children, Marissa and Mathew hugged him for some seconds and parents wished him a safe flight while I stood up behind them, broken and not able to stop my thoughts from running around my brain.
Wilmer approached the policemen and took his passport and passage out of his pocket.
—WILMER! —I called him again—. I need you with me!
—Demi, I can't explain it to you again —he looked at me—. I need to get on that plane...
—No! You can't leave me now! Not in this situation! —I begged to him.
—Which situation Demi? What do you mean? —he asked, confused and tired.
—Wilmer, you can't leave me because... You can't leave now because... —I took a deep breath and felt ready to finally pronounce it—. I'm pregnant with your child!
Everyone looked at me realizing what I had just said. I said it. It was said and heard. I was pregnant.
