The reception wound down the way good things always did—slowly, reluctantly, with no one quite ready to let go. String lights dimmed to a softer glow. Plates were cleared. Music faded into something low and warm that felt more like background than celebration now. Guests hugged longer. Laughter softened into tired smiles. Athena and Carol moved through it together, hands intertwined, stopping every few steps. Clint pulled Athena into a quick fierce hug. "You did good, kid."

Sam clapped Carol on the shoulder. "Try not to save the universe for at least a week." Pepper kissed Athena's cheek and squeezed Carol's hand. "Send pictures. Not space ones." Tony pretended to wipe a tear. "I'm fine. This is fine. Everyone leave before I cry." Morgan toddled over one last time, arms up. Athena scooped her up easily. "Be good," Athena murmured, pressing a kiss to her hair. "Or at least be creative."

Morgan giggled like that was a promise. Yelena hugged both of them at once, tight and fierce. "I visit. I bring knives. For housewarming." Carol smiled. "We'll get a drawer." When the last of the guests drifted away, Athena gently squeezed Carol's hand. "I'll be right back," she said softly. "Go grab the bags." Carol nodded, already understanding, and walked toward the house without a word.

Natasha stood near the edge of the lawn, arms folded, watching the lights sway. Athena approached quietly. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Athena stepped forward and hugged her. Natasha froze—just for a second—then wrapped her arms around her daughter, holding on like she'd waited years for permission. "You okay, Mama?" Athena asked gently. Natasha huffed a breath that was half a laugh. "I am not crying." Athena smiled into her shoulder. "Of course not." Natasha pulled back just enough to cup Athena's face, her thumbs warm against her cheeks.

"You chose well," she said softly. "Go. Be happy. Come back safe." Athena nodded, voice steady. "Always." They held each other one last moment—private, quiet, unguarded. Then Athena kissed her mother's cheek and stepped away. Natasha watched her go, chest full, eyes bright. She waited until Athena was out of sight before she finally let herself cry. Just a little. And it was enough.
