03:54, 1 January 2026The night was quiet over Eastern Europe, the kind of darkness that swallowed whole buildings and left only faint outlines under the moonlight. Athena crouched on a ledge overlooking the abandoned Hydra facility, the wind tugging at her black tactical suit. Natasha stood a few feet behind her, scanning the perimeter with a trained, icy calm.
"Thermal sensors show two guards inside," Natasha whispered. "Dorms, probably. Weak patrols." Athena nodded, checking her grappling hook. "I'll take the east side. You hit the west." "East side's mine," Natasha replied flatly. Athena raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Since when do I let my mom pick the fun side?"Natasha didn't respond. Typical. Athena grinned anyway, and with a practiced swing, she launched herself over the wall.
Inside, Athena landed silently behind the first guard, her fingers already finding the pressure points she'd learned from Natasha. The man slumped without a sound. Athena crouched, dragging him into the shadows. "One down. Your turn." Natasha appeared from the opposite corridor, effortlessly disarming another guard and tossing him behind a stack of crates. Athena met her mom's eyes for a brief second—a flicker of pride—but there was no time to linger.
The facility's main lab was next. Athena pressed herself against the wall as Natasha picked the lock on the heavy doors. Inside, rows of dormant Hydra tech hummed faintly. In the center, a strange glowing device pulsed like it had a heartbeat. Athena crouched near it, eyes narrowing. "That's it. That's what reacted to me." "Looks...old," Natasha muttered, already scanning the room for traps. "Hydra loved their toys."
Before Athena could inspect further, alarms blared. Red lights splashed across the room. "We've got company," Natasha said, already rolling into a fight stance. Athena smirked, cracking her knuckles. Two guards burst in, rifles raised. Athena moved like liquid, flipping over one with a kick to the chest, sending him crashing into the console. Natasha was a blur next, a precise series of strikes taking down the second. Athena ducked as more guards streamed in, using her agility and her mother's training to weave through the chaos.
Finally, Athena reached the device. She tapped into it, her powers resonating with the strange energy inside. Lights flickered, and the pulsing slowed. "I think I can shut it down," she said. Natasha covered her back, knocking out the last guard. Athena's hands glowed faintly, energy flowing from her fingertips into the device. It shuddered, sparks flying, then went dark. Silence filled the lab. Athena exhaled, wiping sweat from her brow. "And...done."
Natasha stepped forward, examining the now dormant device. "Nicely done," she said, a rare smile breaking her usual stoic mask. "Let's get out before Hydra decides to wake the rest of the building." Athena grinned, already heading toward the exit. "Race you to the roof?" "You're on," Natasha said, and for a brief second, they were just two mother-daughter spies, unstoppable and untouchable.
Outside, the cold night air hit them as they rappelled down the side of the building. Athena's communicator buzzed. "Mission accomplished," she said, voice full of satisfaction. "Time to head home." Natasha nodded, but her eyes lingered on her daughter with pride and caution. "Yeah...home. Before you decide to adopt the entire Hydra tech catalog." Athena laughed. "No promises." And as they melted into the shadows, the facility behind them quiet once again, it was clear—this mission was just another day in the life of Athena Romanoff.
