Chapter 18 | S a m a n t h a s p o v

The next day...

It's Saturday; the day I go on my date with Billy. I've been really nervous since I woke up this morning. Right now it's 12pm and my date is at 8pm so I have plenty of time to get ready and calm my nerves.

I walk out of my room and go downstairs. I walk into the kitchen and grab a bag of chips. If I don't find some way to calm down I'll eat everything in the house and end up going on my date with Billy looking like a fat pig.

I sit at the counter and eat my chips. My mom walks into the kitchen and notices how quickly I'm eating.

She laughs. "Samantha, are you alright?"

I continue eating. "No. I'm really nervous about my date."

Her eyes pop. "DATE? YOU NEVER TOLD ME YOU HAD A DATE. I KNEW YOU AND JACE WOULD FALL IN LOVE!"

I laugh. "I'm not going on a date with Jace. I'm going on a date with Billy."

Her face falls. "Oh, have fun. Billy sounds nice but I'm a Jamantha shipper." She shrugs and grabs her keys.

"I'm going to work. Your dad will be home from his business trip tomorrow. Bye, love you." She quickly hugs me and leaves. I listen to her car drive away.

I look down and realize that I finished my bag of chips. I get up and open the cabinet to grab another bag but I'm interrupted by the door bell.

I roll my eyes. Only Satan would interrupt a girl trying to binge on food. I walk out of the kitchen and into the living room. I open the front door and a smile comes over my face. Jace stands there wearing a T-shirt and some basketball shorts.

Jace pulls me into a tight hug. I breathe in his welcoming scent. We let go and Jace walks into my house. I shut the door behind him and walk into the kitchen.

I reach out to grab a bag of chips but Jace snatches them away from me. I give him a look of disgust. "Not today Satan!" I yell. I try to grab the bag out of his hands but he puts his arm up so I can't reach the chips no matter how high I jump.

"You're not getting these Sam!" Jace yells. He rips open the bag of chips and dumps them on the floor.

"I can still eat those." I say grinning.

Jace stomps on the chips and looks at me with his arms crossed. "Now you can't."

I face palm. "Why can't you just let me eat. I have a date tonight and food would really calm my nerves."

Jace grins. "You don't need food to keep to calm, you have me instead, duhhh."

I roll my eyes. "What are you gonna do?" I cross my arms.

"I'm gonna spend the whole day with you and make sure it's calm so you'll be ready for your date with Billy tonight." Jace says.

I sigh in relief. "Thank you. I thought I was gonna have to eat the whole house just to stay calm."

Jace laughs. "Your welcome. I know I'm best friend of the year but you don't have to rub it in. It's whatever."

I laugh. "You're such a snob sometimes."

Jace grins. "Go get your phone and house keys so we can get this day of chill started."

I tilt my head and crack a smile. "Knowing you this day won't be as chill as you say it will."

I run up to my room and grab my phone and house keys. I quickly go into the bathroom and make sure I look fine. I'm wearing some light wash shorts and simple white T-shirt. I pull out my pony tail and leave my wavy hair down.

I make sure all the lights in my bedroom are off and I run back downstairs. I walk up behind Jace and touch is hair. "I'm ready," I say. "And Jesus Christ your hair is so soft."

He turns around and smiles. "I know right. My mom bought me this new conditioner and it's really working. Plus it smells like strawberries."

I laugh. We leave the house and get into Jace's car. I buckle my seat belt and Jace starts the car.

"Take off your shoes." Jace says taking off his shoes.

"Why?" I ask confused.

"Because if you don't sand with get in your shoes." Jace says.

I nod. I put my left hand on Jace's shoulder to balance myself while I take off my shoes. Jace laughs. "I can't believe you've never been to the beach."

I finish taking off my shoes and put them in Jace's car. "Shut up. I didn't have anyone to go to the beach with before I met you."

Jace laughs again. "Right I forgot about that. You're so funny and smart and it's just I forget that you've never really had friends before. I just can't see why anyone wouldn't like you." Jace shrugs.

I blush. "That was sweet you dufus."

"I know, I hate being sweet let's just go." Jace says.

I follow him onto the beach. The warm sand feels really good beneath my feet. There's not that many people here. I like places that are not crowded so that's a good thing.

We get about 10 feet away from the water and Jace sits down. He grabs my hand and pulls me down with him. I stare at the ocean breathing in the freash air.

"This is so beautiful." I say turning to look at Jace. His dirty blonde hair blows in the soft breeze.

"I know right, it's so relaxing." Jace says.

I pick up some sand and watch it blow out of my hands. We both stare at the sun for awhile in silence. It's not a awkward silence though, it's a soothing silence.  A few more minutes pass by until Jace says something.

"You wanna know something I've never told anyone before?" Jace asks still staring at the water.

I look in the direction Jace is looking in. "Yeah."

"This is my favorite place to be. It's like when I'm here watching the water hit the shore I feel free. I feel like I can do anything. It's like when I'm here all my worries don't exist. All the bad things disappear and the only thing that's left is happiness and hope. If I had choice, I'd never leave. I stay here forever and watch the waves dance in the ocean."

"That's the deepest thing I've heard you say. I'm glad you shared that with me." I say reaching out and grabbing his hand.

He looks our hands and then at my eyes, then lastly at my lips. He slowly leans in and when we're just inches apart a seagull flies past us making us jump apart from each other.

Jace turns around and runs his fingers through his hair. I look the other way and take a deep breath realizing that we almost just had a moment.

We both turn around and look at each other. "Sorry." We both say at the exact same time. I smile and start laughing as Jace does the same.

"Hey you wanna go for a swim?" Jace ask standing up.

I look up at him. "Don't we need swimsuits for that?" I laugh.

He rolls his eyes and pulls me up with him. "Rebels don't wear swimsuits. They just go with the flow and swim in their clothes."

I roll my eyes. "I'm not doing that."

Jace shrugs. "Whatever." He pulls off his shirt revealing his toned body. And if my eyes can see through these glasses I think I see a V-line.

Jace starts walking towards me with a grin on his face. "Jace what are you doing?" I ask stepping back a few feet.

"Oh nothing." Jace says still creeping towards me. I turn around to run but Jace catches me and picks me up over his shoulder. He runs towards the ocean and throws me in. He comes in after me.

I splash him with water. "How dare you!" I yell laughing. I look down at my shirt realizing it's soaked and completely see through now. I pull it over my head leaving me in my bra. I throw it on the beach.

"Ooooo looks like Sam decided to be a rebel today." Jace laughs while slicking his wet hair back.

"Shut up!" I splash him again.

***

We walk into my house dripping water all over the floor.

"That was really fun." I say laughing.

"Yeah it was." Jace says.

Jace follows me upstairs and into my room. I grab a towel out of my bathroom and hand it to Jace.

"My date is an hour so I'm about to go get ready." I say. Jace sits down on my bed and gets on his phone.

I quickly grab my outfit out of my closet. I go into my bathroom and take a shower. I blow dry my hair and put it a bun, leaving a few strands of hair out of it. I put on the black dress that Jace bought me and slip on my high tops. I refuse to murder my feet in heels for no one. I put on some lip gloss and take a good look at myself making sure I look perfect. I open up the bathroom door and walk back into my room.

Jace looks up from his phone and bites his lip. He stands up. I grab my phone and purse.

"You ready?" Jace says.

We walk downstairs and out of the house. I lock the door and get into Jace's car. The whole drive to Billy's house Jace doesn't say anything. We get to Billy's house and Jace gets out of the car. He runs over to my side and opens the door.

I laugh and get out of the car. I look at Billy's house nervously. I turn towards Jace who looks just as nervous as I do. "Are you alright? You didn't say anything the whole car ride."

Jace takes a deep breath and shoves his hands into his pockets. "I'm fine."

I roll my eyes. "No your not. Just tell me what's wrong."

"It's this," Jace points to my outfit. "It's not you. After being around you for so long I realized that you don't need a sexy dress to be beautiful. You're beautiful with your personality."

I laugh. "Thanks, but I can't change my clothes. Billy's in there waiting for me." I point to his house.

Jace sighs and hugs me. "Have a nice time with Billy." We break the hug and Jace gets into his car. He quickly drives away.

I take a deep breath and walk up to Billy's front door. I ring the door bell and Billy opens the door almost immediately.

"Hey." Billy says quietly.

"Hey Billy." I smile. I walk into his house.

"It's quiet in here. Where's your parents?" I ask looking around.

Billy scratches the back of his head. "Oh them, they're at work."

"But I thought you said they were- "

He cuts me off. "They couldn't make it to dinner, now let's just eat!" Billy yells.

Well that was strange...

I follow Billy into his living room where it looks like he set up some kind of picnic. There's a Sofia the first blanket with Chinese food laid messily ontop of it.

I laugh. "Who's blanket is this?"

"My sisters. It's the only clean blanket we had in the house." Billy says.

"Couldn't we just eat at the table or something?" I ask.

"No. Just sit down." Billy says bluntly.

What's his problem?

I shrug and sit down. "So how've you been?" I ask.

"Shut up." Billy picks up his fork and starts eating his Chinese food.

He never acts like this at school...

"Are you okay?" I ask.

"You're so fucking annoying! I can't believe I actually agreed to this plan! The truth is Mindy told me she'd have sex with me if I went on a date with you! She wanted you to fall in love with me so she can steal Jace away from you and win him back." Billy yells.

I burst into tears. "And to think I really liked you! Your nothing but a horny son of bitch!" I yell. I grab my Chinese food and dump it all over his head. I storm out his house and start walking to my house. The date I've been dreaming about for basically my whole life didn't even last 10 minutes.

I feel so stupid.

I need Jace. I need him to hug me and say something corny. I need to hear his laugh and see him run his fingers through his hair. I need to stare into his big brown eyes, kiss his soft lips and tell him I love him. I pull my phone out of my purse and call Jace. He doesn't answer. I call him again but he still doesn't answer. There's only one place that can calm me down right now.

I run to my house and into the woods. On my way into the woods I rip my dress on branches hanging from the trees. My bun falls out because I'm running so fast.

I finally reach my destination. Someone is sitting on my rock. I can't quite see who it is because I'm not wearing my glasses. I dig in my purse and grab them. I slip them on my face and my jaw drops. It's Jace and Mindy, sitting on my rock, my secret place, kissing. More tears flood down my face. I turn around and start running as fast as I can.

I thought this day would be the best day of my life but it turned out to be the worst.
